[Bug 198184] Re: [nvidia-new] doesn't wakeup the screen after suspend

This bug was fixed in the package sysvinit - 2.86.ds1-56ubuntu3 --- sysvinit (2.86.ds1-56ubuntu3) intrepid; urgency=low * Let sysvinit-utils only replace the old sysvutils, do not conflict to it. [Bug 237550] [NEW] VIA CHipset, AC/97 Audio Chipset - No External Sound, Internal is Fine
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules-hardy-386 I am working with an Everex Stepnote NM3500W Laptop, which is based on a VIA chipset, and running Ubuntu Hardy Heron, v8.04 i386. The Audio works with Ubuntu on my AC/97 Chipset (V8237 the system tells me in the Launchpad Troubleshoot "hardware testing" reporter) by default, however, when I plug in an external amplifier thru the Headphone Jack, the sound cancels out. It would appear as though Ubuntu 8.04 does not yet fully support this Chipset? The Internal Speaker is fine, and works, but that of course is terribly limiting, and totally unacceptable as a means of sole sound reproduction. Curious if we are going to have to start opening up our laptops and running external speaker jacks off of the internal speaker soldering? Or is there anyone actively pursuing the VIA chipset drivers for Ubuntu still? Furthermore, I created this thread because I have tried other means of getting the sound to work, including a thread which mentioned manipulating the "External Amplifier" source in the Audio Driver preferences, and it did nothing for me. If anyone needs information about my driver details or whatever, please let me know, and if you could, let me know how I obtain said details. ** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- VIA CHipset, AC/97 Audio Chipset - No External Sound, Internal is Fine https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237550 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 206790] Re: Deprecated call in dpkg-dev to init method in Dpkg::Changelog::Entry
** Description changed: Binary package hint: dpkg According to the dpkg-dev changelog, some significant changes were made to the Dpkg::Changelog::Entry clas. One of the significant recent changes is the removal of the init method from that class. So, instead of instantiating new entry objects using Dpkg::Changelog::Entry->init(), new Dpkg::Changelog::Entry should be used instead. The problem is that most of the code was updated accordingly except for one line in /usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Changelog/Debian.pm: $entry = newDpkg::Changelog::Entry->init(); This is causing applications depending on this code such as alien to fail horribly: Can't locate object method "init" via package "Dpkg::Changelog::Entry" at /usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Changelog/Debian.pm line 260, line 8. [Bug 124440] Re: gnome needs a way to manipulate scroll speed
I had the same problem with the scroll wheel (as well as the back and forward buttons on the sides of my mouse) and am wondering if it's not more of a configuration error in xorg.conf? Many of the mice on the market today use more than 5 buttons in fact, my mouse is a standard Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000 and it has 9 buttons (Right, Left, Back, Forward, scroll up, scroll down, press scroll button, move scroll button left, move scroll button right, = 9). I used a different mouse for a test to see if this could really be the case. I had an old GE Optical Mouse WK2803 (wired to usb) and it has 7 buttons. (Right, Left, Back, Forward, scroll up, scroll down, press scroll button in = 7) When I changed my xorg.conf to look like the snip below, everything worked perfectly. Even the number of scroll lines seemed to immediately change to the default of 3 per scroll. begin copy Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device""/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Buttons" "9"<-- for my GE mouse, I changed this to 7 and everything worked again. Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false" EndSection end copy Could it possibly be that simple as putting in the correct number of buttons in the xorg.conf and not a bug at all? [Bug 236604] Re: '/usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/awn-manager.svg': No such file or directory
It seems that AWN isn't actually the culprit here. I don't think that we actually update the icon cache at all when building from source, but looking at other programs that I've installed from source I see that this is fairly common (especially GNOME). What must have happened was that a different program made that call for that directory, and then I uninstalled AWN with out updating the cache. [Bug 237540] [NEW] apt fails to update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt Since the fix to Launchpad bug 236360 apt (0.7.14ubuntu3) fails to install through Update manager or Synaptic. Update manager does not check apt or apt-utils for upgrade after downloading 0.7.14ubuntu3, but offers the Partial Upgrade option. This offers to continue, removing aptitude, apport, gdebi, synaptic and a number of other packages. Trying to upgrade through Synaptic leads to the same failure. [Bug 236604] Re: '/usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/awn-manager.svg': No such file or directory
It seems that this has happened with other programs: http://blogs.gnome.org/jjongsma/2006/10/15/icon-theme-cache-issues/ http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362604 "The GNOME Goal page mentioned above suggests an install-data-hook rule which updates the gtk icon cache after the program’s icons are installed. So the icon cache in /usr/local gets updated when you first install the program to /usr/local. Unfortunately, after uninstalling the application, the icon cache is not updated, so gtk still thinks there are application icons located under /usr/local. Since /usr/local/ is in the icon theme search path before /usr, when the application is installed to /usr, it will find the stale icon cache in /usr/local and think it found the icon you’ve requested. Unfortunately the icon that it ‘found’ has already been deleted, so it will try to load an icon from /usr/local that doesn’t exist, and the program crashes. The solution is to simply add an uninstall-hook that also updates the gtk icon cache so that you don’t have a stale icon cache after you run `make uninstall`. Something like the following: gtk_update_icon_cache = gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t $(datadir)/icons/hicolor install-data-hook: update-icon-cache uninstall-hook: update-icon-cache update-icon-cache: @-if test -z "$(DESTDIR)"; then echo "Updating Gtk icon cache."; $(gtk_update_icon_cache); else echo "*** Icon cache not updated. [Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM
I confirm that both 2.6.24-17-generic and 2.6.24-18-generic fail to resume from suspend on Dell Dimension 4700 with BIOS Rev. A10. None of the older kernels in my GRUB list help to solve this problem, either. I am not using the restricted ATI driver, only the restricted Atheros driver for my wireless card. It had all worked so well in Gutsy, but stopped working after upgrading to Hardy. I really want Suspend/Resume (and Hibernate/Resume) to work again. I would try the PPA kernel 2.6.25 method that is suggested in Bug #221213 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/221213/comments/8 ) but I'm awaiting clarification on how to do it. Alright, I think I have something but still not sure where to go with it. It definitely seems to be an issue with the icon cache not being updated correctly in cases where awn-manager had previously been installed to /usr/local/. While CDBS seems to be calling dh_icons, it only does so on the directory where the icon is being installed to, i.e. ./usr/share/icons/hicolor/'. But it seems that the old directory needs to be updated as well since the cache is still looking there for the icon. [Bug 122047] Re: No way to view explicity installed packages, excluding automatically installed packages
As a workaround, I've attached a script that outputs a list of all packages that are not auto-installed. Here is some sample output: can_be_marked_as_auto acpi can_be_marked_as_auto acpi-support can_be_marked_as_auto acpid can_be_marked_as_auto adduser can_be_marked_as_auto alacarte can_be_marked_as_auto alsa-base can_be_marked_as_auto alsa-utils can_be_marked_as_auto amarok-xine can_be_marked_as_auto anacron no_dependents apache2 can_be_marked_as_auto apmd can_be_marked_as_auto app-install-data no_dependents app-install-data-commercial can_be_marked_as_auto apparmor no_dependents apparmor-utils can_be_marked_as_auto apport no_dependents apport-gtk no_dependents apt-rdepends can_be_marked_as_auto aptitude can_be_marked_as_auto apturl The text "no_dependents" indicates that no packages depend on the listed package. These packages can (supposedly) be removed without affecting any other package. The text "can_be_marked_as_auto" indicates that at least one other package depends on the listed package. These packages can be marked as being automatically installed (via Synaptic by going to Package..Automatically installed or via aptitude by pressing Shift-M). The script is really slow because there is no fast and reliable way to get reverse dependencies for a package. ** Attachment added: "Script that lists non-automatically-installed packages and whether or not they have dependents" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15029093/non-auto-packages.sh -- No way to view explicity installed packages, excluding automatically installed packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122047 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 237529] [NEW] rxvt sees some resources but not saveLines
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rxvt I have several entries in my .Xdefaults that are correctly read by rxvt, including fairly complicated things like keysyms. But the following lines have no effect: Xterm*saveLines: 1 Rxvt*saveLines:1 rxvt*saveLines: 1 rxvt.saveLines: 1 So I have to invoke rxvt with -sl 1 (and that works fine). Am I typing the resource line badly, or what? (There's a still-open bug from two years ago that says rxvt does/doesn't read .Xdefaults; I am running v2.6.4, downloaded last November. Ubuntu 07.10. I tried "strings /usr/bin/rxvt" and found that saveLines is indeed a string inside the binary. Hope this helps pinpoint the problem. ** Affects: rxvt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- rxvt sees some resources but not saveLines https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237529 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 188567] Re: [hardy] soundproblems with zsnes
@all: As explained by the creator of OSS3 (and 4): "Level of latencies [depend on] buffer size."[1] So, to fix stuttering sound (from SDL or elsewhere) on pulseaudio + alsa, increase the number of buffers (default: 12) and the buffer sizes (default: 1024). Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa as superuser, and add the following lines anywhere BEFORE the line ".ifexists module-hal- detect.so": load-module module-alsa-sink sink_name=output device=hw:0 fragments=24 fragment_size=2048 load-module module-alsa-source source_name=input device=hw:0 fragments=24 fragment_size=2048 Be sure to restart pulseaudio for the settings to take effect: pulseaudio -k ; pulseaudio --daemonize After this, the unpatched zsnes 1.51 with -ad sdl switch, or other apps that use SDL sound, should play smoothly (if you're not running all kinds of audio filters and what-not, see below). For me, on 32-bit hardy, this works great with zsnes + libsdl1.2debian- pulseaudio + alsa + pulseaudio. Not stuttering or popping during gameplay (though zsnes does still make strange r2d2 sounds when it first starts). Also, for even lower latencies, you can add yourself to the pulse-rt group (sudo gpasswd -a pulse-rt), then add the following lines at the bottom of /etc/pulse/daemon.conf high-priority = yes nice-level = -11 realtime-priority = 5 default-fragments = 8 default-fragment-size-msec = 15 Then after a logout and re-login to X, pulse should run with a higher system priority and be more greedy for samples, which should also improve latency. On my system (athlon 1.8GHz, 1gig ram), using the settings above for default.pa and these in daemon.conf, I can run zsnes with simulate surround, 48000 sample rate, cubic spline interpolation and hi quality lowpass filter, with very minor twitches. At 44100 sample rate it is perfectly smooth. Heh, yeah...just thought of something else as well. You can also pass a command line option to pulseaudio called --resample-method (or set it in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf for permenant use), which lets you choose which resampler to use. Some are faster and some sound better. I think the ffmpeg resampler has a good balance of speed and quality, but YMMV. There are a bunch to play with (list them with pulseaudio --dump- resample-methods). [Bug 225950] Re: [8.04] Drawing evolution window on screen very slow
Here's what I've observed from some crazy experiments. I've noticed that Evolution 2.22, regardless when using it on a normal Ubuntu install or on a LTSP thin client, it is more sluggish than the Evolution 2.12 found in Gusty, for the very same reasons stated above. It seems to take two seconds for Evolution to "Formating Message" where the previous version, the formating was instant. Scrolling from one email to the next is also very choppy, especially using the previous and next buttons in the tool bar. This is experienced on a variety of machines, all at different speeds and specs (and apparently many other users). To try and pin-point what the problem is, I tried a few combinations of installs and found mixed results. All of these tests were with thin clients. First I had a basic Ubuntu 8.04 and LTSP installed and the 8.04 Evolution packages installed by default which had poor performance. I then installed Gusty's Evolution packages 2.12 instead of Evolution 2.22 on the very same server and the performance was excellent. I then tried Debian Lenny's Evolution packages 2.22 on this server and found the problem still exists. I then tried a complete install of Debian Lenny's LTSP server and Evolution 2.22 and found the performance to be excellent (overall much quicker than Ubuntu's I might add). In summary: 8.04 LTSP + 8.04 Evo 2.22 = slow performance 8.04 LTSP + 7.10 Evo 2.12 = excellent performance 8.04 LTSP + Debian Evo 2.22 = slow performance Debian Lenny LTSP + Debian Evo 2.22 = excellent performance Based on these results, there is something about the Evolution 2.22 Ubuntu package that makes it a great deal sluggish than 2.12 in Gusty (the problem does NOT exist in Debian). When installing the 2.12 packages, I found no problem whatsoever so the problem seems to be with Evolution 2.22 and that the LTSP thin client model magnifies the problem a great deal. I hope this helps somewhat on where to look. -- [8.04] Drawing evolution window on screen very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225950 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
