[Bug 237826] [NEW] Firefox does not support viewing Birt report

2008-06-05 Thread ww_great
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When I trying to view my Birt(from Apache) reports on firefox browser(under
Ubuntu 8.o4), I met the problem of "Version mismatch", and I can not see the
detail error stacks information.
but, I can view the reports correctly in Firefox version 2.0.0.14 under my
Windows XP SP2.
Is it the problem of Firefox or Birt?

[Bug 150888] Re: nm-applet not refresh networks

2008-06-05 Thread rich
This is quite a time-killer for me, as I move from coffee shop to home
every day. Today it took about 30 minutes before nm-applet rescanned...
just long enough for me to figure out how to do it manually from the
command line (nm-applet seems to have some spite programmed in it).

I run:
iwlist eth1 scan

and I get all the wireless connections I want to connect to, while the
previous ones are still showing in nm-applet, that no longer exist.
What is more, I flip the manual wireless switch on the laptop, or turn
off wireless on nm-applet, then return them back on and the non-existent
connections are still showing!

nm-applet must a) be keeping its own records somewhere, other than what
iwlist is getting its information from, and b) is not auto-updating for
up to 1/2 hour at a time. Why?

[Bug 178953] Re: compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled

2008-06-05 Thread crdlb
I am no expert at this, but the problem seems to be quite simple:
xrender_unmanage_screen in src/compositor/compositor-xrender.c always
calls meta_screen_unset_cm_selection which calls XSetSelectionOwner with
None as the owner. It should only do this when giving up the compositor
selection manually (ICCCM 2.3.1), but instead also does it when called
by meta_screen_free. By setting the selection owner to None, compiz
finds that XGetSelectionOwner does not return the window which it set as
the owner and aborts.

Also, the convention compiz uses (set the selection then check it to
verify success) seems to be recommended at the bottom of ICCCM 2.1.

Thanks folks, the STR in the -19 kernel works great, but it seems to
cause a regression: when trying to "sudo reboot" after a suspend-to-RAM

yes indeed because...

a) octave V3.01 is a only bug-fix release ov V3.0.0 without new
functionality, so it should be definitively better

b) the toolbox-packages of octave are not in the ubuntu-repository, they
have to be downloaded from the octaves project homepage where they are
only available for 3.01

- Can you post the output of objdump -T /usr/lib/libQtNetwork.so.4.4.0 |grep

- Can you test with the latest version of qt4 on hardy-backport and tell us if

[Bug 90378] Re: Should make downloaded files-read only

2008-06-05 Thread Eric
I also find this change highly annoying. I guess I understand why
people who are new to Linux would not understand that saving their
important files in /tmp is bad. But to people who have used Linux for a
long time and are accustom to the old functionality this is really
intrusive. For myself I have lots of reports that are downloaded from
the web or email. I open these reports in open office, change the
sorting or formatting to take a look at the data, then close the file.
I don't care about the changes that I have made, I just wanted to look
at the data a different way for the moment. So it works out really well
that these files are saved to /tmp and eventually automatically deleted.
Since Openoffice does not allow you to change anything about a file when
its read only, not even change the sort order, I have to open the file,
save it (in /tmp), just to change the sort order. I am okay with the
default functionality the way it is for the Linux newbies, but I need an
option in both Firefox and Thunderbird that allows me to use the
applications like I have for years.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks

Eric

[Bug 237823] [NEW] linkedin links don't work

2008-06-05 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

After logging into www.linkedin.com, some of the links don't work, most
notably the 'edit profile' link. It also seems to ask me to log in
repeatedly when pressing links, which seems to indicate some kind of
cookie problem.

The site seems to work fine using the webkit-based 'Web' browser on my
Nokia E90 (Symbian/s60).

The problem is seen on a fresh and up-to-date installation of Ubuntu
8.04 (Hardy Heron), and 3.0b5.

[Bug 235399] Re: "Print black" does not use black ink cartridge

2008-06-05 Thread ricardisimo
Oh! you want to know if other apps print in "real" black ink normally,
or simulated black? In other words, regardless of any "Print black"
option, what ink cartridge is being used to print black?

That is a very good question, and one that someone other than myself
should know, unless you think this might be system-specific, i.e. my
comp and my printer. Again, I'm not eager to blow an ink cartridge on
testing this, but I will make a note to myself to try printing in Kate,
KWord, etc. once the current one starts to die out. Thanks again for
everything.

[Bug 213212] Re: freeze with lots of usb events due to lack of x86emu updates [koolu geode lx]

2008-06-05 Thread Metiu
Sorry guys, I had some more time to try the new driver, and I found that
it is fixed on my Koolu too, only I had specified the FBSize options
with 64MBs (which is what I had set in the BIOS), but the BIOS for some
strange reasons keeps losing that setting.

So let's call it fixed on my part.

Thanks a lot

[Bug 237822] [NEW] Hibernate no longer works after Upgrade on Ubuntu 7.10

2008-06-05 Thread AmitChaudhary
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I am on Ubuntu 7.10. After getting the last set of updates about 3-4
days as of June 1st 2008, Hibernate no longer works. It has been working
fine since I installed 7.10.

Here is what no longer works means:
1. I click hibernate and it saves as usual.
2. When restarting next time, it reboots into the login screen.
3. Now this time, if I select hibernate, it says no swap disk found and brings
me back to the a locked desktop.

The swap disk is no longer available. free command shows swap is not present
(size 0).
After restoring swap (mkswap, update uuid in /etc/fstab, add uuid link and
swapon -a), swap comes back.

I repeated the above steps and still the same problem.

Some noteworthy log entries
Jun 1 09:23:48 amit-laptop kernel: [ 7.636000] EXT3-fs: sda3: orphan cleanup on
readonly fs
Jun 1 09:23:48 amit-laptop kernel: [ 7.636000] EXT3-fs: sda3: 4 orphan inodes
deleted
Jun 1 09:23:48 amit-laptop kernel: [ 7.636000] EXT3-fs: recovery complete.
Jun 1 09:23:48 amit-laptop kernel: [ 7.652000] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with
ordered data mode.

Rolling back to linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic-2.6.22-14.37 did
not fix it. I have a complete history below

Please fix as a useful functionality was broken. Also, please let me
know, if you need more information let me know, it is a HP laptop
(Pavilion dv1000)

I reported this first on the forms, see

[Bug 235399] Re: "Print black" does not use black ink cartridge

2008-06-05 Thread ricardisimo
I've never seen a "Print black" option in any other application outside
of OOo. The point to the bug is precisely THAT option not working. If
there's another app with a "Print black" option, I'll gladly test it
out.

However, I'm not real keen on wasting several ink cartridges on several
apps. I only know it's a problem when the ink runs out. So, what I can
do is make a note to myself not to change the dying cartridge until I
can test it out on whatever other applications you have in mind.

[Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM

2008-06-05 Thread Ohb01
Good news: The -19 kernel in hardy-proposed fixed Resume from Hibernate
for me (though it is slow, and progress bar looks frozen, it works). Bad
news: Resume from Suspend is still broken for me.

Details of what I did:

I have a Dimension 4700 - BIOS Rev. A10, Atheros-based wireless card
with restricted driver, no restricted ATI driver used.

I removed previous version of -19 kernel and repository as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226279/comments/106

Figured out how to add hardy-proposed repository, (GUI method, but based
on repository listing in
http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showpost.php?s=0d6286ee06bc8596c8a856a2247212e3&p=4846197&postcount=8
), i.e.: System > Administration > Software Sources > [administrator
password] > Third-Party Software tab > Add > deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-proposed main restricted universe
multiverse

Let Update Manager update the list of files. Ignored suggested
application updates for now -- wanted to try new kernel first. So:

Applications > Accessories > Terminal > sudo apt-get install linux-
image-2.6.24-19-generic linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic linux-
restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-generic

Restarted computer.

Selected the -19 kernel in GRUB

Logged into my account and waited for GNOME to finish loading. Wireless
and sound seemed to work this time.

Tried System > Quit > Suspend

Suspended quickly, but pressing Power button on computer to resume resulted in
a blank screen with a blinking cursor, no keyboard, no mouse, no GUI, no Login.
I waited a few minutes, but nothing was happening, not even disk activity.
Restarted computer.

Selected the -19 kernel in GRUB

Logged into my account and waited for GNOME to finish loading.

Tried System > Quit > Hibernate

Shut down fairly quickly with a couple of error messages (sorry, they
went by too fast -- are they saved in a log somewhere?).

Pressing Power button on computer to resume resulted in a slow process
to get the splash screen up, the progress bar moved back and forth a bit
and then seemed to freeze, there was still sporadic disk activity, and
then finally the Password prompt for my account came up, and I was able
to log back into the GNOME GUI. It was slower than in Gutsy, and the
frozen progress bar was not reassuring. On the plus side, wireless
networking worked right away after the Resume.

There is definite improvement overall, with at least Hibernate being
possible again. Thanks you very much or all your work on this, and
thanks in advance for looking into the Suspend issue further if
possible.

[Bug 225950] Re: [8.04] Drawing evolution window on screen very slow

2008-06-05 Thread Anthony M Simonelli
I was only explaining my experiences and, now with knowledge of the bug
you mentioned above, maybe it explains why the Debian Evolution runs
just like the Ubuntu version, because the libcairo2 package was
consistent on my Ubuntu system and I only installed the Debian Evolution
packages. Anyway, I only had a few minutes to test it, but it seems
like that was the problem and it is so much more responsive, so thank
you so much. I know there is some debate in the bug you mentioned about
whether to keep the patch or not, but I say remove it since Evolution is
a widely used program and it greatly increases the performance. I plan
on testing it some more, and I encourage others to try upgrading from
hardy-proposed and test it too so you can give your feed back before we
mark this as fixed (just to be certain).

Thank you so much for your help with this bug. Now if we can speed up
the message reading pane in Evolution, because it seems like every
message, no matter what the message, I get a half a second or more of
"Formatting message", even if it's only a couple of lines in length.
Does anyone else experience this, or maybe I'm just seeing things? And
every time I delete a group of emails at one time, it doesn't hide the
very last deleted email but remains listed and crossed out, even if I
press Send/Receive. It's not until I change folders or somehow refresh
the email list does it goes away. Know of any bugs filed for these two
issues or should I file them myself?

[Bug 237819] [NEW] Transfer of focus to Find/Replace dialog in Eclipse is considered focus stealing by Compiz

2008-06-05 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

In Eclipse, the Find/Replace dialog automatically gains focus when it is
opened, or when you press Ctrl+F while it is already open. However,
Compiz considers this latter case to be focus stealing (even when focus
stealing prevention is set to "Low"), despite the fact that both windows
are part of the same app and the transfer is in response to a user
action.

Repro steps:

1) Enable Compiz, then install compizconfig-settings-manager and enable focus
stealing prevention in System -> Preferences -> Advanced
Desktop Effects Settings -> General Options -> Focus & Raise Behaviour.
2) Install Eclipse, open it, and open an editor window.
3) Press Ctrl+F to show the Find/Replace dialog.
=> The dialog gets focus, as expected.
4) Click on the editor to transfer focus back to it.
5) Press Ctrl+F again with the Find/Replace dialog already open.
=> Although the "Find:" text field gets focus, the actual Find/Replace window
does not, so that if you try to type then the keypresses go nowhere.

Expected: When Ctrl+F is pressed, the Find/Replace window should always
get focus (except perhaps when using very strong focus stealing
prevention)

I don't know whose bug this is, so I'm opening it against both the
Eclipse and Compiz packages. I know you could argue that this is how
focus stealing prevention is supposed to work, but it is definitely a
bug to consider this focus stealing on the "Low" setting when it is so
obviously not focus stealing.

Also opened with Eclipse upstream at
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=235965.

Note that I have actually installed Eclipse directly from eclipse.org
(Version: 3.3.1.1, Build id: M20071023-1652), not the Ubuntu repos, but
I'm assuming that this would affect Ubuntu's package too.

[Bug 237818] [NEW] wine abc.com video strange graphics mode

2008-06-05 Thread JJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

After following instructions in the forums per this thread's
instructions, I attempted to watch tv shows on abc.com through wine +
firefox + adobe flash. Everything works fine through the commercials,
right up to the point where the show video starts. At this point the
video flips into a weird color scheme with lots of interesting colors,
but not correct ones. The video itself also appears to be heavily
pixelated. Even after closing wine, this graphics mode persists until
the xserver is restarted with Ctrl+ Alt + Backspace.

Another thought is that I have not been able to find this bug reported
anywhere else except at the very end of the thread I followed directions
from, leading me to believe that possibly a recent change is responsible
for this bug... but I don't have any real evidence to support that.

I saw the exact same issue with both the open source and proprietary ATI
drivers for my A215-S4807 Toshiba Satellite laptop.

[Bug 237817] [NEW] Faulty GPRS chatscript

2008-06-05 Thread Fredrik Tolf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

It seems that the PPP chatscript for GPRS connections that ships with
Hardy is faulty. It quite just after it sends the dial string to the
GPRS modem, and does not wait for the CONNECT string, which results in
both an inability to detect connection errors, and the much more serious
problem that the CONNECT string gets into the PPP data stream and
confuses pppd (which, in the end, times out waiting for PPP data that it
deems valid).

On the other hand, the fact that there isn't already a bug for this
problem seems to indicate that it works for others, but I cannot easily
understand how it could.

In my tests, it started working as soon as I added CONNECT to the end of
the chatscript. I'm connecting via Bluetooth with my Sony Ericsson P990i
mobile phone.

For that matter, it wouldn't hurt if the network manager GUI program
would allow the user to set up the RFCOMM connection with a mobile phone
either, but I guess that would be a separate feature request.

[Bug 178953] Re: compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled

2008-06-05 Thread Thomas Thurman
Here are my thoughts.

Part one, the background reading: It seems to me after a while of
digging through the ICCCM that Travis Watkins was incorrect back in
December when he said that Metacity was not giving up control of the
compositor selection. Section 2.8 of the ICCCM says that anyone who
wants a selection can take it. The old owner is told they're losing it,
but they don't get a choice in the matter. Obviously it was unhelpful
when Metacity crashed at that point, but it no longer does. (Backport
to stable is coming soon.)

Part two, the experimentation: I have experimented with the return
results around the lines which Travis pointed out. Compiz, as you see,
does not check the return result of XSetSelectionOwner. I have checked
the result, and it is BadRequest. (In case of strange synchronisation
oddities, I have performed the same experiment with an XSync on the
previous line, with identical results.) BadRequest is a low-level
problem in X itself or in Xlib; I don't know what might be going on here
but it would appear to be at least as much a Compiz problem as a
Metacity problem, since this error should never appear. I have
therefore reopened this bug against Compiz.

This manner of "closing" bug reports is trifling. There is no crash

submitted? Because there is no report, there is no bug?

[Bug 237813] [NEW] Adept Manager is unable to install/uninstall/commit any changes due to Broken Dependency.

Bug description:
On installing Kubuntu 8.04 from Live-CD, it showed some new updates

internet. While updates were being installed, the machine went offline due to

unable to do so. Moreover, Adept wouldn't even allow any other packages to get
installed. The run gives an error message: "there was an error commiting
changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit

On further investigation, a broken package named:

[Bug 237809] [NEW] Plain UI?! Introducing Moodbar

2008-06-05 Thread Mik3
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

OK, sorry, it's not a "real" bug, but a (much needed!) feature-request;
please, hear me out.

Rhythmbox is great for its simplicity, stability, and easy of use; but with an
increasing interest in appearance, I think a step toward implementing the
interesting, visual "moodbar" package is one in the right direction.
In any OS, the music managing application is one of the most used: it needs a
great user interface (Congrats so far, by the way!). Rhythmbox ships as a
default for Ubuntu, so, nice yet simple and noticeable visual changes (along
with the increasing program stability) may just tip the scale:
"Hey this works, really well, and looks great - I like it; let's see what else
'Ubuntu' can do ..."
Personally, I like the slider for its size - it provides more accuracy - but,
sadly, its the most plain feature of the whole app, despite its functionality).
So why not keep the size and just make it look more appealing: hello, moodbar!
Attached a mock screenshot to show you what I'm getting at, just a five-minute
gimp effort.
I have to admit: it looks a little strange at first. But it has definitely has
grown on me.
  What do you think?

Nop, removing the directory does not solve the problem. Thanks anyway.

[Bug 228067] Re: lyx 1.5.3-1 crashes as soon as it starts

2008-06-05 Thread manuel fernandez
I propose a different solution to upgrade to lyx 1.5.5 that may be
easier and works very well:

add the debian sid software source.
in kubuntu adept -> manage repositories -> "third party software" -> add
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main

then many programs become updatable, hold on! do not update!
choose lyx and request it to be upgraded
in the "preview changes" you will see that some other three of four programs
will also be upgraded due to dependencies
"apply changes"

then go back to the adept -> manage repositories -> "third party software"
and remove the cross from debian 'sid' (unstable) officially supported (you may
also remove it altogether if you wish but is not necessary)

fetch updates return the usual list as you had before this procedure.

However, you now have lyx 1.5.5 installed properly with the required
dependencies. When these programs become superseeded by a newer version
in the usual channels, they will continue to be upgraded thus keeping
the adept management tidy.

@Yuriy: I think that it will never be fixed in 4.0.x

[Bug 235804] Re: trash icon unvisible

2008-06-05 Thread Parthan
Can you specify the version of gnome-applet and gnome-panel that have
been installed in your system? Please run `'dpkg -l gnome-applets gnome-
panel'` (without the ``) and add the result to your comment. Thanks in
advance.

** Changed in: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: None => gnome-applets

** Changed in: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
