[Bug 234837] Re: Binutils corrupts Open MPI

2008-06-15 Thread Steffen Neumann
I can add that the problem has been introduced somewhere
within the hardy development time. We have a machine
that has been installed around february/march with a then-current hardy.
This includes a working OpenMPI package. The update to the released hardy
broke openMPI.

Yours,
Steffen

(Whose bugs 210273 and 224706 have been marked a duplicate of this).
So if this bug is invalid I'd like to know if someone is working on any of
the other two.

Steffen

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

2008-06-15 Thread bhupi
Hi
Thanks for the bug report. Don't know if the following is relevant.
I have upgraded to Hardy (8.04). When I first upgraded, I was having problems
bootoing in. I had to press escape and go into recovery mode and press rfix.
Since then (over 15 days now) Hardy hasn't crashed once, even after leaving the
pc on whole day. I also have 32-bit AMD Athalon 2800+ with gigabyte motherboard
and Nvidia GForce 6200 graphics card. It works well with wifi connection as
well as wired ethernet.
Kind regards.

[Bug 240231] Re: PolicyKit hangs X if a password expires during the session

2008-06-15 Thread jimmy smith
Apologies, this doesn't make sense -- just ignore the Which will set it
to expire -- this shouldn't be there. Without it, the rest should make
sense.

Basically, an expired password causes nasty problems for PolicyKit-
enabled apps. This is easily verifiable. Just set your password to
expire immediately and then try and use a PolicyKit app. This could
easily affect systems that remained logged in for days.

or just add :
CFLAGS=pkg-config --cflags libxul-embedding-unstable

[Bug 240239] Re: MySQL replication - Debian quirks undocumented

The one other would appear to be commenting out

bind-address = 127.0.0.1

better if that could be set to two addresses rather than the all-or-one
choice, but evidently MySQL doesn't have that option?)

I still have not received any answer to my emails (Friday 13 June @12:22:46

In summary, this is apparently caused by compiling openmpi with

2008-06-15 Thread dotancohen
Yes, I am using Kubuntu 8.04. I do have firefox-gnome-support installed,
however.

Another usage example:
When I download a PDF file, Firefox asks whether to open the file with KPDF (my
default PDF viewer) or to save the file. If I save the file, then right-click
the file in the Download Manager, Firefox pops up a dialog box telling me that
I need an external application to open the file and asks me to pick one. I must
pick the file with the GTK file picker, which starts in $HOME.

[Bug 240239] [NEW] MySQL replication - Debian quirks undocumented

2008-06-15 Thread Whit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

In the provided my.cnf file:

# note: if you are setting up a replication slave, see README.Debian about
# other settings you may need to change.

Yet the README.Debian only has a section called FURTHER NOTES ON
REPLICATION (no initial notes, just a brief paragraph of further
notes - did a vital section get cut here?). That section has nothing
about other settings that need to be changed.

There is at least one important one. Importing the databases from the
master will result in the password setting in /etc/mysql/debian.cnf
being wrong on the slave; it needs to be changed to the password on the
master. This is a Debian-only complication, not MySQL per se, so Debian
should document it, yes?

There may at least one other, since replication isn't working yet for
me, despite following the standard doc at mysql.com.

[Bug 240243] [NEW] Laptop (Uniwill X20IA Series) does not resume after suspend

2008-06-15 Thread gregory
Public bug reported:

My RoverBook Vojager V200 VS laptop with Ubuntu Hardy installed fails to
resume after suspend to RAM -- and to disk as well.

As far as I can tell, it suspends normally -- the screen goes black and
sleep LED starts blinking, indicating that machine is in suspend mode.
After pressing power button the LED goes off and I can hear some
hardware activity -- DVD drive spinning out if there is a disk in it,
and sometimes system fan noise. But the screen remains absolutely black,
no response to keyboard presses, touchpad or anything. Only reboot
helps.

Did you get that or not?

Today I only received (automated) Launchpad messages from you but no direct
mail. I did send you one given that I had not heard from you.

Looks like there may be email troubles at your end? Just to be sure, I added
both you email addresses as CC.

| In summary, this is apparently caused by compiling openmpi with -Wl
,-Bsymbolic-functions (default from latest dpkg-buildpackage).

If it is dpkg-buildpackages, it would 'hit' us too as we're building in
unstable. So I think it may be something else.

Could it be that Ubuntu has a different GCC default in stripping symbols or
something? The first person I talked to about this was doko but is always so
overwhelmed that he told me to please file a bug report which I did.

Which promptly got ignored by everybody.

| This could possibly be due to any of the three libopenmpi1 different
interrelated libraries sharing symbols?

That was my immediate gut reaction as well. But that is a design choice Open
MPI made upstream, and we (as in Debian's Open MPI maintainer) do not fight
it.

*If* you guys changed build options, I'd start by reverting to what we
do.

But if you guys changed nothing, well then I am at a loss.

| Can you and/or Manuel comment on this before we release a fix?

[ CCing Manuel who you forgot to CC. ]

Sure. Let's hash this out for a moment to get it right. Manuel may want to
comment as I may well have overlooked or forgotten something.

Dirk

[Bug 240246] [NEW] kubuntu hardy x64 hangs completely when using firefox 3

2008-06-15 Thread Jordi Moles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Hello,

i've been trying firefox 3 rc1 on kubuntu hardy since it came out on 11th june.
I've had so many freezes, complete OS freezes while using firefox. That
hasn't happened to me using other browsers visiting the same webpages or even
earlier versions of firefox
3, like beta 5.

The thing is for example:

I'm in a website with a simple html form. When i press on the submit button,
firefox and the whole kubuntu freeze, and i have to press the reset button,
there's no way to recover the system, not even with crtl+alt+supr.

Other situations when i've experienced this whole hanging thing is when i've
got several tabs opened and i close one by pressing the middle botton from
the mouse. Also when there's a simple html link and i use the middle botton to
open up the link in a new tab.

As this hasn't happened to me with other browsers or firefox versions, i guess
there's must be something wrong with this version of firefox, but they say that
firefox can't hang the whole system, so i'm asking you guys now.

Just let me know if i can provide you with any extra information you
need.

The details of my system are:

firefox version:
firefox-3.03.0~rc1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

kubuntu version:
2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux

[Bug 49047] Re: PS2 keyboard and mouse not working when usb keyboard/mouse connected (ubuntu.dapper)

2008-06-15 Thread Roger Svensson
I also have problems with PS2 keyboard and mouse when using USB devices.

One example is when I started copying lots (4GiB) data from an external
USB disk to my internal hard drive - both mouse and keyboard stops
working. Luckily an inserted USB mouse saved me from having to shoot
down the machine.

Another example is when I inserted an SD-card into the USB-attached card
reader - both mouse and keyboard stops working.

Both these episodes gives nothing in the /var/log/messages and friends
so I'm not sure if this is really any helpful at all.

[Bug 209084] Re: no run as root in menu in hardy

2008-06-15 Thread Nathan Handler
Let me try to clear some things up. su-to-root will automatically call
either gksu (default) or kdesu (when being launched under KDE) for
better integration into the running desktop environment. Otzenpunk's
script seems to attempt to do the same thing. One issue I have come
across is that menu does not suggests gksu, kdebase-bin, kdebase-
runtime, or sux. It does not depend on them. As a result, By just adding
menu as a recommended package in wireshark, we are not guaranteeing that
the user is able to use gksu (or any of the variants). Personally, I
think we should recommend menu in wireshark, and then try to get menu to
depend on (instead of suggest) gksu, kdebase-bin, kdebase-runtime, or
sux.

I am not sure what Debian/Ubuntu policy has to say about this. gksu is
fine for use on Ubuntu. However, I don't think we should be using it for
applications installed on Kubuntu. su-to-root was designed to solve this
issue. I think it is much simpler to recommend menu, and then use su-to-
root for the .desktop file than to have to create a custom shell script
like Otzenpunk did, for each application that needs to be run as root.

2008-06-15 Thread Jonathan Jesse
Good morning,

I am wondering if you are still having problems with Kopete and a Seg
Fault when using a webcam? If so can you please update this ticket with
the current version you are running and what version of Ubuntu?

Thanks

Jonathan

[Bug 240249] [NEW] Mailman does not display Unicode member names correctly.

2008-06-15 Thread Roger C. Pao
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mailman

Upgrading from Ubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 to 8.04 broke the displaying of
Mailman's member names. Chinese names such as 鮑震 display instead as
#39825;#38663;. It used to work. I'm talking about the List's
administrative interface Membership Management Membership List
member name field.

After applying the [ 932383 ] Include FullName in roster views patch
at
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=932383group_id=103atid=300103,
I can see the member name is displayed correctly in the roster visible
to list members from [Visit Subscriber List] button. The Membership
List member field name is still displayed incorrectly however.

** Affects: mailman (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 236459] Re: IMAP: inotify_init() failed: Function not implemented

2008-06-15 Thread Braindead
inotify_init man page says: Inotify was merged into the 2.6.13 Linux
kernel

I have the same problem on my VPS and I assume that the kernel version of the
VPS is too old (in my case 2.6.9).
just my two cents

[Bug 185469] Re: high cpu load because of JavaScript

2008-06-15 Thread Kari Aliranta
Which cairo package version are you using? Are you using XAA or EXA
accelmethod in X? Maybe attach your Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf

Alexander: Ok, I checked my notes, and here's some pretty detailed and a
bit corrected information (sorry for two posts, there are two
attachments and I only use the web interface for Launchpad):

The attachments are my current (testcase #2 and #3 below) Xorg.o.log and
xorg.conf on Xubuntu HARDY, with Cairo version 1.6.0. The accelmethod in
all cases is XAA, of course.

*** #1 ***
The abovementioned benchmark and Gtkperf results with FF 2.0.0.14 on GUTSY,
with Pango disabled (to avoid https://launchpad.net/bugs/32561 ). The computer
was a (now sold) 1.1Ghz Athlon with Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400 and using the nv
driver, with an unmodified xorg.conf - except for the custom modeline that I
also use on my never computer below (removing it and using the standard modes
doesn't help). The results:

Javascript interpreter benchmark: not tested, I hunted for another bug back
then.
Scrolling benchmark w/ text: about 2.5 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ divs: 2.5 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ nothing: 2.5 seconds

Gtkperf result with 100 test rounds: about 26 seconds.
General feel when scrolling long pages with lots of text and pictures: very
snappy.

*** #2 ***
The abovementioned benchmark and Gtkperf results with FF3 rc1 on HARDY, with
Pango disabled (enabling it doesn't seem to have significant effect on FF3) and
without any extensions. The computer is a 2.4Ghz P4 with Nvidia Geforce 2 MX
400, using the nv driver:

Javascript interpreter benchmark: about 5 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ text: about 14 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ divs: about 7 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ nothing: about 5 seconds

Gtkperf result with 100 test rounds: about 19 seconds.
General feel when scrolling long pages with lots of text and pictures: slightly
jerky.

*** #3 ***
The abovementioned benchmark with FF 2.0.0.14 on HARDY, with Pango disabled and
without any extensions. The computer is the same as in the previous test case,
a 2.4Ghz P4 with Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400, using the nv driver:

Javascript interpreter benchmark: about 12 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ text: about 12 seconds (16 seconds with Pango enabled)
Scrolling benchmark w/ divs: about 6 seconds
Scrolling benchmark w/ nothing: about 4 seconds

General feel when scrolling long pages with lots of text and pictures:
slightly jerky.

*** #4 ***

I also have less complete notes on making the benchmark with FF3 beta 5
on HARDY, without any extensions and Pango disabled. The computer was a
(now also sold) 1.0Ghz Athlon with Nvidia Riva TNT2 64 with nv driver
and an unmodified xorg.conf:

Scrolling benchmark w/ text: 25 seconds

General feel when scrolling long pages with lots of text and pictures:
annoyingly jerky.

*** Other notes: ***

- All tests are made with Human-theme. Changing the theme to something
simple, Mist for example, doesn't affect the results of FF2 or FF3
benchmarks - it, however, significantly lowers the time needed for
Gtkperf test.

- Gtkperf result (100 test rounds) with testcases #2 and #3 computer was
about 16 seconds on GUTSY and is about 19 seconds on HARDY. The text
scrolling part of the Gtkperf test only takes 1.33 seconds on HARDY,
however, so the increase is not only because of that part (I don't know
whether it is because of that part at all, because I only saved the
total time of the test when I was still using GUTSY on this computer).
