[Bug 243813] Re: Software Source Incorrectly Set To LTS for Intrepid

2008-07-14 Thread Connor Imes
Thank you for reporting this, the problem also exists on i386
installations, even currently in alpha 2.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can
learn more about finding the right package at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-system-tools.

To reproduce, go to System->Administration->Software Sources, go to the
Updates tab, and check under the "Release upgrade" section.

[Bug 248591] Re: System Locks Up forcing hard boot frequently Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel 2.6.24-19-Generic

2008-07-14 Thread Gaurish Sharma
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
does not yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

[Bug 248617] [NEW] nm-applet "enable networking" option issue (Hardy Heron 32bit)

2008-07-14 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

In my laptop (sony vaio vgn-fs415M) and ubuntu hardy heron 32 bit (kernel
2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP ) I have two network ports:
- eth0 (wi-fi port)
- eth1 (utp port)

I bootstrap my system with wi-fi switch to off (so wi-fi is disabled) and utp
cable connected to eth1 port (already manually configured). nm-applet (version
0.6.6) shows to me that the connection is active (the icon shows two black
monitor with no red triangle). In fact if I try some tests from command line
all is ok. But if I want to disable networking and I do this with checking the
nm-applet option "Enable networking" I correctly see a red triangle in the
nm-applet icon but the connection is still active.
The issue is due to the fact that nm-applet disabled eth0 interface (in fact if
I type "ifconfig" from command line I see nomore eth0 ) but not eth1 (maybe
because eth0 come before eth1 and nm-applet only disable one interface, that is
the first ordered in the system).
The result is that the user thinks that it is not connected, while the
connection is still active.

[Bug 242196] Re: Ubuntu will not recognize Cell Phone storage devices to copy files

2008-07-14 Thread Daniel Gimpelevich
Sorry it took so long before I could take a look. I can see no trace of
the phone in either of those files. Are you sure it was plugged in when
you issued the commands? It looks like you have a USB2 card, and on-
board USB1 ports, or maybe the other way around. Please put the phone in
storage mode, plug it into a USB2 port (not a hub), and issue those
commands again while the phone is plugged in:

sudo lsusb -vvv > lsusb.txt
dmesg > dmesg.txt

That will replace the two files in your home folder with fresh ones.
Once I take a look at those, I may get a better idea of what's going on.

This is definitely reproducible here too. I'm bootstrapping new domUs

patch in this thread completely eliminates the bug here. I have not seen
the oops in weeks of use since applying the patch, creating quite a few
domU's in that time.

FYI: the patch is commit f7009264c519603b8ec67c881bd368a56703cfc9 in
Linus's linux-2.6 tree.

[Bug 248602] [NEW] ftp places -> connect to server problem in 8.04

2008-07-14 Thread thismaechler
Public bug reported:

to some ftp servers I can't connect no more since release 8.04 (with
places->connect to server), I get a "invalid answer" message.
With every other ftp-client (also in the shell) I can connect without problems
to the same server. It seems
to be a problem only on some servers, the other work normal.
With filezilla I compared the messages coming from the working and the
not-working servers, and it looks
exactly the same. I even tried to connect to the server using the IP instead of
the URL, without success.
Could it be that the problem is some chracter-encoding issue?
I would rellay love to have this working, because I like to work directly on
ftp for web-developping, and
there's no editor with a really handy ftp-support (like I know from ultraedit
in windows). Bluefish can
work directly on ftp itself, but the bookmarking of the servers is quite nasty.

[Bug 248600] [NEW] nvclock causes corrupt screen + hard lock

2008-07-14 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

When running nvclock on my nVidia GeForce 6800, normally I am able to
tune the GPU and memory clock settings down slightly (a workaround for
apparently slightly off-spec hardware). Under Gentoo, there were no
problems. Under Ubuntu, as soon as I hit enter to execute the command,
my screens go haywire, showing a garbled display similar to what you'd
get if the horizontal hold were to go out on a TV. At the same time,
the machine will generally stop responding to input, thus console
switching becomes impossible. Occasionally the display may change, as
though something new appeared, and the occasional keystroke might be
accepted (at one point, an attempt to switch consoles made both screens
go black).

Eventually, it hard-locks the machine; not even Ctrl-Alt-SysRq will get
me out.

I am running nvclock as a normal user (as was the case in Gentoo), not
as root.

I suspect this is a conflict with the card/driver "PowerMizer" function
(even though mine is a normal desktop machine).

[Bug 248598] [NEW] Slow/erratic 2d paint/redraw events on some games

2008-07-14 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

I am finding that with at least one game, Double Solitaire, paint/redraw
events are very slow. The same version of wine is on two machines, one
with a GeForce 6800, the other with an MX4000. The slowdown is most
notable when you resize the window after the initial deal, and the game
has to scale the cards and redraw them. An event that used to take less
than a second on either machine now takes 2 or so on the faster video
card, and upwards of ten seconds on the slower of the two, and is very
glitchy and erratic on the latter, slower card.. In this instance, I am
using wine version "1.0.0-1-ubuntu4~hardy1" (as reported by adept).
Both machines used to run Gentoo, and on that distribution, Wine's
performance was fine regardless of which version I was using. No fancy
compile/optimize settings were used there (just -O2 and that's it).

If anyone needs the game in question for testing, it can be had freely
from here: http://members.aol.com/dbsolitare/

[Bug 218631] Re: Screen brightness only at 3 levels

Do you experience the same problem if you use the Brightness Applet?

If you don’t already have a Brightness Applet, right-click on a blank area of
a panel and choose “Add to Panel.” Choose “Brightness Applet,” and then
choose “Add.” Click on the new applet, and try using the scrollbar (with your
mouse or arrow keys) to adjust the screen brightness. Do you still experience
the jumps in brightness?

[Bug 248593] [NEW] File-roller does not integrate with mime types

2008-07-14 Thread LiraNuna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Some file extensions or mime types do not use the external applications defined
when opened from file-roller.
For example, opening a .cpp file asks the user with what application to run
this file with, when nautilus uses the default text edit application (my case:
gedit).
Other extensions include .exe (when wine is installed), .tcl, README (not an
extension), AUTHORS and more.

One interesting thing is, that file types that you would consider
'similar' to other types such as .c or INSTALL.

the line it errored on... if you look up a bit there is another line

[Bug 248592] [NEW] Mondo fails to restore system because it uses UUIDs

2008-07-14 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

The version of Mondo shipped in Ubuntu 8.04 (2.24-2) does not deal with
the UUIDs used in the fstab and GRUB instead of devices.

When backing up a system, everything is fine. However, when trying to
restore from the generated ISOs, the system fails at the end because it
cannot install the boot loader and cannot mount the file systems.

The reason is that the new file systems created by the restoration
process have different UUIDs from the ones in the backed up /etc/fstab
and /boot/grub/menu.lst

Mondo 2.2.5 seems to fix these problems. As seen in the News from this
new version:

"Ubuntu 7.10 has been particularly tested and should really work better
now, including UUID fstab. "

Current Mondo archives are unusable in the current state. So maybe it
would be worth updating the packages in Hardy...

[Bug 240242] Re: address bar suddently not responding to

2008-07-14 Thread jordan147
Hi all

I'm a relatively lay user, running Firefox 3.0 in Windows XP.
[Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9)
Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0]

I'm having the same problem as described above. Sometimes occurs just
minutes into launching browser, sometimes later; sometimes with many
tabs open, sometimes with only a few (not sure if it happens with just 1
tab).

Worth noting that ctrl-enter etc (ie to add www and com around a URL
name) ceases to work also when this bug occurs.

I did not have this problem on my previously installed version of
Firefox (not sure which version, 2.something)

This bug pretty substantially reduces the usability of the browser,
especially when having to restart with lots of tabs open.

[Bug 248591] [NEW] System Locks Up forcing hard boot frequently Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel 2.6.24-19-Generic

2008-07-14 Thread wackyiniraqi
Public bug reported:

 I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel 2.6.24-19-Generic I have a KT400 Mobo
with Broadcom wireless, Nvidia 6200 graphics. I have to hard boot the PC about
15-20 times before I can get logged in. Once in I have less than 30 minutes to
do anything before the next lock-up. I have tried to use recovery mode but
that Locks up aswell. The mouse stops workingHDD lights offcaps and
numlock lights on keyboard do nothing. Sometimes I get the start up screen
sometimes not. Sometimes when I get the start up screen the cursor isn't
blinking...and I can't type anything. Sometimes I can't get 1/4 of the way
through the loading bar. Sometimes I get a message about the login screen
crashing and the system will try another. Sometimes it locks up at the
"Starting up..." other times it gets to "Loading, please wait..."
 I have tried using a GeForce3 Ti200 card rather than the 6200. I have
tried using a Atheros wireless card rather than the broadcom card. Nothing
works. I really don't want to go back to windoze. I enjoy ubuntu on my
laptop. But my PC has to atleast start up.
Now I'm no superuser with linux but I can follow directions and can copy
code easily enough. Tell me what you need and I will do everything I can to
help resolve this issue. I checked the /var/crash folder but it is empty am i
missing something?

[Bug 245888] Re: Intrepid, on latest updates (mesa updates - 7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1), compiz no longer works and gives white screen on login

In Synaptic, you can downgrade by selecting a package and hitting CTRL+E
or Package>Force Version in the menu. However, when I tried downgrading
the packages, I couldn't get X working at all. In fact, this problem is
mentioned by Vikrant and Suku previously. In other words, don't
downgrade the mesa packages because it could break your configuration
worse (until you re-upgrade mesa)!

[Bug 215614] Re: Evolution Exchange unreliability in Hardy

John, I am using outlook calendar, even offline. Since I added the
server into the Global Address List (three posts above) the stability
has been ok (hours or days between crashes), although I have another
caveat: if you are accessing your outlook mail box elsewhere at the same
time (for example, from a Windows XP virtual machine) stability problems
are in your destiny. This may be an Exchange weakness.

Before the change to the GAL, I was seeing crashes within minutes of

[Bug 222803] Re: Java broken in openoffice hardy upgrades

2008-07-14 Thread peridot
This just bit me. I have upgraded to hardy (via gutsy etc.) an install
that was originally a Dapper Drake. I have the openoffice-java-common
installed, and it is up-to-date (as are all my openoffice and Sun JRE
packages). I had to delete this file to make it work. In fact, although
I could select between two different JRE versions (Sun and OpenJRE)
neither worked until I deleted the file.

[Bug 223909] Re: Doesn't detect my ipod nano

2008-07-14 Thread Melisandre
Odd... I have a nano first generation and it gives the same error.
Luckily gtkpod now supports photos (though I find myself with a dozen or
two empty photos that suddenly appeared on the iPod without any ability
to remove them - seemingly a bug)... I really liked gpixpod too! =/ Ah
well.

[Bug 248576] [NEW] keyboard layout changes before key is released

2008-07-14 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Suppose CTRL+ALT+DEL turns off the computer.
If CTRL+ALT is assigned as a layout switching combination,
CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work anymore. The problem is that,
when CTRL and ALT are pressed together, the layout
is switched right away, consuming the key presses.

Instead, CTRL+ALT (and all the other key combinations
involving only CTRL, ALT, WIN and SHIFT)
should only change the keyboard layout *after* the
keys are released. This would give users the oportunity
of "key combos" that use the switching keys
(in this case the CTRL+ALT+DEL one).

This shouldn't be a problem for people who are used
to the key being consumed when the key is pressed,
since it's usually pressed and released right after that.
But it would be really good for people who associate
these 4 keys (CTRL, ALT, WIN and SHIFT) with the
idea of *modifier* keys. If they can modify other keys,
one wouldn't expect that they had priority over the
modifiable keys, right?

The problem is that, right now, I can't use the most
common layout-switching combinations because of this.
CTRL+SHIFT is used on text editors with the arrows to
select one-word-at-a-time, CTRL+ALT is part of the
CTRL+ALT+DEL combo...

Well, I'm not completely sure if it's the
Keyboard Indicator's fault. I apologize if it's not.
But I don't really believe it's an OS limitation... Is it?

[Bug 241195] Re: Starting up a virtual machine in a virtualbox changes the display brightness (again)

2008-07-14 Thread Tim Richardson

I have now come to a workaround that I am happy with.

I still have acpi enabled, and I no longer get backlight resetting.

You can see the details here (which is of course for my Toshiba)

http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=dgd53r6d_36hqmmh4hn&hl=en

Meanwhile, upstream says this bug is probably fixed in the coming
xserver release, which I think means it will probably not be ported back
to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. Debian Sid already shows better behaviour than
Hardy on my Toshiba, although I only get four levels of backlight
brightness from Sid.

[Bug 215614] Re: Evolution Exchange unreliability in Hardy

2008-07-14 Thread John
The problem seems to revolve around the calendar part, and not the mail.
>From what I gather, when the calender is refreshing, that is when the
locking occurs. I also had the same issue when I subscribed to my gmail
calendar, and it went away when i removed the subscription.

There is also a bug not allowing the user to store the calendar locally
("folder not found" error), which might solve the issue entirely.

It is almost unusable for me; I have to restart about every ten minutes.
