[Bug 248512] [NEW] can't find an 'Official Ubuntu Installation Guide'

2008-07-14 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

(Ubuntu all versions)

What happened:
* Trying to answer a question someone had with their installation not working
as they expected I wanted to send them a link to an official installation guide
* I searched with google for "official ubuntu installation guide" (without
speech marks)
   * This did not return any links (on the first page) to any official
installation guide.
* I searched googel with: "installation guide site:http//help.ubuntu.com"
  * This returned no documents
* I searched Yelp (2.22.1 in Hardy)
   * None of the returned links were to an installation guide for Ubuntu itself

I gave up and provided a link to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation which is not part of
Ubuntu/Canonical's quality assurance process. In theory I should have
the read the whole guide to make sure I wasn't sending him to something
with mistakes or which is out of date for his version of Ubuntu.

What I expected:
* Search for an Official Installation Guide to Ubuntu
* Find it.

I will be happy to break this up into several bugs. Clearly this problem
runs across more than one package.

[Bug 248505] [NEW] system freeze: drm:i915_wait_irq

2008-07-14 Thread LeO
Public bug reported:

The system hangs now on a regular base. The screen freeze, it is seen
that the screen is tried to grab something, but unclear what, and
finally some parts are different coloured then before. Checking the
Syslog I see different results, from which I frankly have no clue, how
to fix them. Since they occur regularly, this is ANNOYING.

The behaviour occured in different apps, e.g. Supertux2, Supertuxkart,
Wine, ... (but mainly in games)

I am using a Laptop, Acer Extensa 5220, Celeron M550. Due to incomplete
packages I have little adapted the Keys (frankly said, no idea, where I
change the key-code to get the DEL-Key working) and I have installed as
well some clock-monitoring packages. From what I conclude of the Logs, I
would say this is an X-issue. Therefore I wanna note, that the Display-
variable was not set up properly, which I set manually. Additionally I
do not wanna miss the fact, that there have been some graphic-changes,
but to my understanding this work. (here I can as well mention as above,
I have no idea what was finally changed - OR not)

[Bug 244204] Re: ppm2mpeg.sh: command not found and other encoding problems

2008-07-14 Thread charly4711
two things here:
1.) The ubuntu package apparently does not put the ppm2mpeg.sh script to a
location where it will be found automatically. Your workaround seems good.
2.) I very much suspect a usage problem here. xvidcap has a concept of
"multi-frame capture" which records to a video directly. Using that, you don't
need ppm2mpeg.sh AT ALL. Just do this (as an example on the command line of
options you can also select through the preferences):
# xvidcap --mf --file /tmp/test.avi --auto
... record smth.
# totem /tmp/test.avi

You only need ppm2mpeg.sh if you use "single-frame capture". That captures to
individual screenshot image files. Those you can encode to a video. The script
provided with xvidcap does not work with XWD files. The following should work:
# xvidcap --sf --file /tmp/test-%d.png --auto
 record smth.
select "encode" from the xvidcap menu
# totem /tmp/output.avi

Please read the xvidcap online help for more information and let us know
how you fare.

[Bug 188010] Re: [hardy] gnome-settings-daemon doesn't start

2008-07-14 Thread NoOp
I've resolved this issue on my Thinkpad (which is a T21 - the A21 had no
issues). I stumbled across this after I found that I could no longer
ping localhost or hostname. What I found:

1. /etc/network/interfaces had the following line commented out:

# iface lo inet loopback

I uncommented the line.

2. I used the following to bring up loopback:

sudo ifconfig lo localhost
sudo route add localhost dev lo

courtesy of:

I also found a similar blog regarding the same:

After I was able to reliably ping localhost I no long get the gnome-
settings-daemon msg.

[Bug 236719] Re: ntp doesn't support proxy

2008-07-14 Thread Thomas
try one of the NTP pool servers: http://www.pool.ntp.org/
Your ISP should have an NTP server too, that's probably the best one to sync on
as it's closest.

also try ntptrace:

$ ntptrace 1.au.pool.ntp.org
1.au.pool.ntp.org: stratum 2, offset -0.000370, synch distance 0.028278

SSH uses TCP (but no proxy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server),
so if that's getting through but NTP (which uses UDP) does not then it
might be a configuration problem with your gateway.

2008-07-14 Thread Vanessa Lewis
Public bug reported:

I am using an Edirol/Cakewalk UA25 USB soundcard with my Windows partition,
which works.
I have also used the UA25 with Ubuntu 7.10, which worked.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and the audio does not immediately work through this
soundcard as it did with 7.10
I then did a fresh install of 8.04 rather than an upgrade and it did not solve
the problem

The command "speaker-test -c2 -D plughw:UA25 -twav"
returns the result "Playback device is plughw:UA25
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1207:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
Playback open error: -19,No such device", repeatedly.

I have read bug report 111635 but although the problem is similar in my case
Ubuntu does not appear to have recognised the sound card at all.
I've also seen a few related problems on the forums but I haven't found any
answers that have worked in this case.

coming out the sound output the input if I select monitoring correctly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. If you select a package in Synaptic and press the delete
key, the package will be marked for removal. That is the intended
action. I'm not sure what the quick search area has to do with this.

[Bug 248150] Re: package r-cran-fcalendar 220.10063-1 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-07-14 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
MOTU-sru is subscribed to decide if this is sru-worthy.
We have 32 dapper packages which are potentially involved:

r-cran-abind
r-cran-acepack
r-cran-car
r-cran-cluster
r-cran-date
r-cran-design
r-cran-effects
r-cran-fbasics
r-cran-fcalendar

r-cran-fmultivar
r-cran-fportfolio
r-cran-gregmisc
r-cran-hdf5

r-cran-matrix
r-cran-misc3d
r-cran-multcomp
r-cran-mvtnorm
r-cran-nlme
r-cran-psy

r-cran-rgl
r-cran-rsprng
r-cran-sandwich
r-cran-snow
r-cran-statdataml
r-cran-strucchange
r-omegahat-ggobi
r-omegahat-rgtk

The ideal solution would be to implement a fix through hardy-update that
would allow the installation to proceed without errors. This could be
done either with a no-op postrm or moving the depends on r-base-core to
a pre-depends.

However, the issue can easily be solved by the user by running the
upgrade again (I tested this successfully on a dapper chroot).

[Bug 248501] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when a song if copied from banshee and pasted anywhere except for the desktop

2008-07-14 Thread Sayak Banerjee
Public bug reported:

Following this:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/248396/comments/1
After I enabled apport, my /etc/default/apport file reads like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/default/apport
# set this to 0 to disable apport, or to 1 to enable it
enabled=1

# set maximum core dump file size (default: 209715200 bytes == 200 MB)
maxsize=209715200
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

After enabling, I rebooted. On booting in, I opened Banshee music player, right
clicked on one of the songs in the music library, clicked on "Copy", and pasted
it in my /home/glade/Temp folder. Nautilus crashed as expected. I navigated to
the /var/crash folder but there was nothing inside it. Hence as there were no
.crash files to double click on and automatically file a bug, I am posting this
bug again.

So to clarify, I uploaded this video using gtk-recordmydesktop to show
what's happening: http://www.mediafire.com/?w2zjznmt4tz

[Bug 248502] [NEW] Photo import from mass storage devices

2008-07-14 Thread Olivier Samyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Ubuntu Release: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Package version: 3:2.10.8-0ubuntu1

Short problem:
Importing photos when I insert an USB mass storage media does not shows me
gthumb as an import option.

What I expect:
If I open a nautilus window, and go to Preferences -> Media tab -> Photos
I expect to have "Open gthumb photo manager" just as "Open F-Spot photo
manager".

According the forum post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5325181
the gthumb package lacks a gthumb-import.desktop file and some mime type magic
to be recognized as a photo manager program.

As descried in the forum post, just providing this file should fix the
problem.

[Bug 222052] Re: visor module doesn't work after upgrade to hardy

2008-07-14 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha releases are
available for testing htttp://www.ubuntu.com/testing . They actually
contain an updated 2.6.26 based Ubuntu kernel. The only thing to note
is that LiveCD images won't be available for testing until Alpha3 so you
may want to wait to test. When you do, please let us know your results.
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 228302] Re: [Hardy] No DMA nor 32bits IO support anymore

2008-07-14 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Is anyone even caring about this fucking bug ?!? Two monthes that it has
been filed, and still open, still flagged as "New" and even still of
"Undecided" importance while the solution is so well-known !!! (I didn't
have access to the computer up to now)

The problem is related to the libATA. It is likely to be related to
Intel's combined mode, however I found the solutions listed on libATA
website only after solving the problem another way.

I suggest people to feedback after testing solutions given here : http
://linux-ata.org/faq.html#combined

If it doesn't work (as I said I didn't test myself, found it too late), then
try with "my" (actually well disseminated on the web) solution : add those
lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist :
blacklist pata_atiixp
blacklist pata_acpi
blacklist sg
blacklist sr_mod
blacklist sd_mod
(NB : it was not necessary for me to blacklist sg and sd_mod, but I had
problems only with my DVD recorder)

/dev/sdX will become /dev/hdX and UUIDs will change, so don't forget to
change entries in /etc/fstab (and maybe /boot/grub/menu.lst) and swap's
UUID in /etc/initramsf-tools/conf.d/resume (and to "update-initramfs -u
-k all" after this latter operation). [Reminder: "blkid" for knowing
UUIDs]

Old perfs (hdparm -T) :
 Timing cached reads: 2 MB in 2.39 seconds = 856.86 kB/sec
New perfs :
 Timing cached reads: 1028 MB in 2.00 seconds = 514.25 MB/sec

Thanks guys.

I don't think I really have *a lot* of 3rd party applications installed,
but almost every one needs their own repo. None of it should have
touched the aliases file. I have Miro, Wine, Swiftfox, Opera, Picasa,
Google Desktop, Last.fm, and two Pidgin plugins. And I don't generally
ruin GUI apps as root.

[Bug 123617] Re: Can't boot unless passing "irqpoll" option to the kernel

2008-07-14 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delayed response. From the testing feedback here, it
sounds like the upcoming Intrepid kernel will likely resolve this issue.
The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha releases are out for testing if you are
interested - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . However, note that LiveCD
images won't be available until Alpha3.

Marcin - sound likely wasn't working when you tested the 2.6.25 kernel
because you probably needed to also install an updated linux-ubuntu-
modules package. As far as providing a fix for Hardy it would be
helpful if we could narrow down which patch to backport which resolves
this issue. Rogerio mentioned being able to do a git bisect to help
locate the specific patch. That would be great and very helpful to the
kernel team. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 174759] Re: Eclipse crashes due to jvm crash

branflake2267's solution worked for me as well. This seems the most

 Setting 'JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun' in ~/.eclipse/eclipserc

I tried OpenJDK and got the crash, I tried sun-java-6 and got the crash on
my Ubuntu 8.04 hardy amd x64 system. Started happening after the upgrade.
 Very annoying bug.

I'm using Hardy with Eclipse 3.2. I was using Sun Java JDK 6 under
Gutsy. With upgraded to "Hardy" Eclipse kept crashing as described in
this bug. Setting the JAVA_HOME as "branflake2267" described above fixed
the problem perfectly (obviously, you will need Sun Java 1.5 installed

Yes, the problem was that brPrintList was included in laser1 but only

added the printer models from the laser packages.

Please try the following:
- remove brPrintList
- enable my PPA again if you've deactivated it:

- install the updates
Hopefully everything is working now.

[Bug 191137] Re: [Hardy] ACPI Embedded Controller (EC) stops boot when kernel boot 'quiet' option is enabled or AC power is connected

2008-07-14 Thread Stefan Bader
SRU justification:

Impact: On several Sony laptop models the changes introduced by upstream
commit c04209a7948b95e8c52084e8595e74e9428653d3 to enable the EC handler
during scan will cause those machines to hang on boot.

Fix: There was a work-around to remove the quiet option on boot but that
very much depended on timing and probably won't always work. There have
been two upstream patches identified to solve the issue. Patches
commited to Hardy as bdbcd262d8a378984716e3bc3bdbfd70841303ab and
40e55e8f3bb152df0e883dad572d263647f3c056.

Testcase: Boot a Hardy kernel on one of the affected laptops with the
quiet option active (default) and it will hang. With the fixes this
does not happen.

[Bug 248492] [NEW] update manager fails catastrophically to upgrade to U7.10

2008-07-14 Thread carlcarl
Public bug reported:

When updating the distribution to Ubuntu 7.10 via 'update manager'
dozens of packages failed to initialize including login and sudo, with
endless rounds of dialogs indicating so, culminating in an abort-of-
installation dialog and an attempt to make the system usable with a
warning that it may not be, followed by a request for this bug report to
be made against 'update manager' with the files in /var/log/dist-
upgrade/ which I attach. The system still boots, but I don't trust it
and I am going to start over with 8.4.

[Bug 150654] Re: mime descriptor file missing from Seahorse package

>From the Seahorse help I understand that importing is done for public
keys only: "To import keys choose Key > Import and select, from the file
chooser, a file containing at least one ASCII armored public key.".

>From that I would not expect importing private SSH keys to work anymore.
And it would indeed be an indication that some mime info is not needed
by Seahorse. You can ask the Seahorse developers for confirmation if you
like (some ubuntu developers from the changelog file might know too).

Public ASCII armored keys are recognized in the file chooser when
importing. Can you confirm that?

Importing public SSH keys gives an error message, but I'd say that
should be fixed in the help text by excluding them there. Do you agree
with that? If so, I will file a separate bug for that.

[Bug 94192] Re: -12 kernels don't boot with nosmp or maxcpus=0

2008-07-14 Thread jhansonxi
This also affects 2.6.24-19-generic on Ubuntu Hardy. I'm using a AMD
Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core Processor and was attempting to narrow down a
VMware-player networking problem by disabling the other cores. The
system fails to boot, getting stuck near the ehci_hcd (USB) and fd0
messages. It's not freezing as it responds to the keyboard Ctrl-Alt-
Delete and the magic SysRq key sequences. I'm using a LUKS/dm-crypt
encrypted root and would expect a password prompt somewhere in there but
I'm not seeing one. The prompt may be causing the halt or it's failing
earlier and not getting that far. While this won't affect most users it
may cause problems for troubleshooting SMP hardwre issues and points to
a weakness in the kernel or initrd scripts.

The VMware problem was due to the network device name changing caused by
moving the drives from another system so was unrelated to SMP.
