[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP
FredBezies: I understand your sentiments. Seeing this many knee-jerk reactions in here is disheartening, at best. You said you have unsubscribed to this bug report, so you may not see this, but when you said you would recommend people to NOT use Ubuntu due to this controversy, I think that also makes you a zealot. Just put things in perspective. Anyway, I hope all sides involved can approach this in a calm and logical manner. Of course, I have my own opinions, but I have expressed them in a post somewhere up there. I think that's all I need to say about the EULA. I think the more important problem now is all the knee- jerk reactions. If there's any "bug" here, it's our collective handling of the issue. Remember, when children misbehave and justify their actions by saying, "BUT S/HE DID IT, TOO!" we correct the, and tell them that is not a valid justification. I see a lot of that going on in here. We (as a whole) should not act like children. My apologies to any children (meaning by age or if you consider yourself a child) who are actually participating, of course. It goes without saying that I am using the words "child" and "children" as a classifier, with no negative connotations. Now, regarding the user experience. I like Fedora/Red Hat's solution to the issue, but we could improve it slightly. I noticed how that solution said if you did not want to use the anti-phishing features, you could disable them by going into the preferences. Rather than that, we could have some page saying welcome, then giving a link to the terms for the services, then saying if you do not agree, click this button. Clicking the button will disable the anti-phishing features, as opposed to making the user go to the preferences and unchecking some boxes. -- AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269656 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 271062] [NEW] Sleep mode does not wake on keyboard [Studio Hybrid]
Public bug reported: Dell's Studio Hybrid is a desktop system with a laptop motherboard. When the system goes into sleep mode, it does not wake when a keyboard key is pressed, but does wake when the power button is clicked. Since this is a desktop rather than a laptop, this isn't terribly obvious and it just seems that the system has frozen. It would be more intuitive/obvious to have it recognize keyboard activity as a wakeup event. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sleep mode does not wake on keyboard [Studio Hybrid] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/271062 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 239021] Re: Hardy Freeze/Lockup with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic up to 2.6.24-19-generic
Hi again. Sorry it's taken a while, but I've tested the new kernel as per the request, and the short answer is my problem is fixed by the 2.6.27 kernel. The rest of this write-up is what I did and found during testing. In Hardy I simply installed the linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic deb package from the Intrepid archive. The freezing/lockups stopped and the system was completely stable. There were obviously a few minor issues, because installing linux-restricted-modules etc wasn't an option. Restarting Hardy with the standard kernel brought back the frequent crashes. Intrepid Alpha5 was also stable apart from a few bug related application crashes (but not system crashes). Updating the packages to the latest in the repository, which included the updated 2.6.27-3 kernel, was also fine and I haven't had a single crash. Installing the Nvidia restricted drivers (and so enabling Compiz) had no detrimental effect. I am also happy to report that for the first time, I am able to use the suspend and hibernate options! (Only works with Nvidia restricted drivers installed.) Alpha5 has won me over to Intrepid, but for anyone with the same problem as mine and preferring an LTS release, it would seem that a backport of the 2.6.27 kernel would fix the problem in Hardy. Let me know if there's anything else needed concerning this bug. I'm happy to mark the this bug as solved on release of Intrepid. Thanks to the many developers involved and keep up the good work! [Bug 271060] [NEW] Wrong kernel version on 2.6-24 ?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-headers-2.6.24-19 Hi, I am using Ubuntu 8.04.1 on i386 hardware. My kernel is a 2.6.24-19. I need to install VMWare Server. The installer compiles a module of the kernel for specific purposes. So I have to install linux-headers. This sould not be problem, I already did the same on other distributions. But VMWare complains that the kernel I am running on (2.6.24-19) is not the same than the one in the headers : 2.6.24-3. And it stops the installation. When I look in the Makefile in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-19/Makefile of the Kernel I see this : VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 24 EXTRAVERSION = .3 It seems that the version indicated here is not the good one. But when I try to change the EXTRAvERSION value, VMWare still finds that the version of the headers is 2.6.24-3. It seems that it takes the information in version.h, but I do not know how to change the version in there. Do you know how I could change the version so that my installation works ? Maybe the package would need a fix ? [Bug 264290] Re: linux 2.6.27-2.3: coretemp reads 15C too hot, and keyboard is occasionally unresponsive
I've been running 2.6.27-3 for the past couple days without problems. Maybe the problems I had before really were due to overheating, since I did knock over the case sometime shortly before trying 2.6.27-2.3 :(, and I re-applied thermal paste on my CPU heatsink before trying 2.6.27-3. Still, even before that it ran fine with 2.6.24. And my CPU temps are only a couple degrees lower. I don't really think it was a physical thermal problem, but I can't rule it out. Anyway, I think the long-delay bug is no longer happening for me. Maybe something in 2.6.27-3 was a fix for my hardware. Can launchpad clone a bug, so I can mark the freezing part of this as fixed, and the coretemp part as a sort of non-bug? The coretemp reading is of course still 15C higher than with Hardy, and doesn't agree with the BIOS, but that's meant to happen. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released -- linux 2.6.27-2.3: coretemp reads 15C too hot, and keyboard is occasionally unresponsive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264290 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Is this targetted toward intrepid as well as hardy-backports? I know libjs-jquery is becoming somewhat of a dependency for django developers and it may need to hit hardy-backports if Django 1.0.1 will find a home there as well. [Bug 206864] Re: Unable to set max_cstate on hardy kernel
Since Marcel states the /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate doesn't exist in the alpha5 version of the kernel in Intrepid, the issue is apparently not resolved, and the only way to get max_cstate set is to set it at boot time with modprobe.d options, just as it was before. Setting probe options at boot time is not an adequate substitute for the on-the-fly manipulation provided by the max_cstate mechanism. My understanding is that there is a kernel parameter that can be enabled to allow max_cstate to work again, but that it is off by default. Building the generic kernel with this option enabled would fix the problem, unless of course they've completely removed that option. For me, I only need max_cstate changed when running vmware on a Pentium-M laptop, because vmware and the higher cstates don't play well together. Rebooting with new options just to run vmware isn't a reasonable "solution." At the moment, the only thing I can do to get vmware to work in a reasonable manner is to run an infinite loop junk process in another shell to keep the system from thinking it can go into higher cstates ("while [ true ] ; do echo foo > /dev/null ; done" does the trick, but at some expense). The old way of putting "1" into /sys/module/preprocessor/parameters/max_cstate while vmware is running is an annoyance that is clearly a fault of vmware, but it worked better than the infinite loop does. -- Unable to set max_cstate on hardy kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206864 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 270123] Re: Wrong battery status
Thank you for the information. The information exported to /proc/acpi seems to be consistent with the behaviour of the battery status applet as I understand it (battery status is 'charging' when the AC adapter is present, but always 'charged' without AC adapter, and never 'discharging'). This defainately looks like a kernel bug. For this reason, I will now reassign this to the kernel. The next interesting thing would be to see whether the information in /proc/acpi is consistent with the information in sysfs (which is what HAL and gnome-power-manager uses). I suspect it may be, because you say that the gnome-power-manager icon only ever displays when charging, even though you have told it to display when charging and discharging. Also, the information you provided from HAL earlier suggests this already too (battery.rechargeable.is_discharging = false). If you feel like it, could you please run the following commands both with and without AC power: ls -la /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 cat /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0/* I'm not familiar with the structure under this folder. If the files I'm interested in are in sub-folders, you will need to cd in to them in order to get the information. In addition to this, could you also provide the standard information required by the kernel team for ACPI related bugs at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI, as separate attachments. [Bug 271058] [NEW] FFe request for vsftpd 2.0.7
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vsftpd Hi, This is a feature freeze exception request for the new upstream release 2.0.7 of vsftpd. I emailed ubuntu-server@ about that a few days ago and brought it up in today's server team meeting where no opposition was encountered and where I was told to go ahead with this FFe request. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu- server/2008-September/002231.html To sum up this email: The main reason for which I'd like 2.0.7 is because it fixes a bug (bug #254905) that makes it impossible to connect with FTPS using a recent version of FileZilla (and maybe other clients). Moreover, the changelog is pretty small. Some changes don't affect us or are trivial, some are bug fixes, and 2 are added config options. 2.0.7 changes: - Fix finding libcap for the link on Slackware systems, thanks to Roman Kravchenko . - Fix build on Solaris 2.8 due to non-standard C, thanks to IIDA Yosiaki . - Fix man page typo, thanks Matt Selsky . - Bring the PASV listen() into the bind() retry loop to resolve a race under extreme load. Thanks to Curtis Taylor . - Enhance logging for debug_ssl. - Shutdown the SSL data connections properly. This prevents clients such as recent FileZilla from complaining. Reported by various people. - Add option to enforce proper SSL shutdown on uploads. Left it off after much agonizing because clients are so broken in this area. - Add option to delete failed uploads.
