[Bug 273931] [NEW] CMUCL crashes when loading foreign library

2008-09-24 Thread Thomas Bakketun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cmucl

Ubuntu intrepid 8.10
cmucl 19a-release-20040728-9
i686

cmucl gets a segmentation violation on the second call to ext:load-
foreign.

Example:

(ext:load-foreign "/lib/libc.so.6")
;;; Opening shared library /lib/libc.so.6 ...
;;; Done.
(ext:load-foreign "/lib/libc.so.6")
;;; Opening shared library /lib/libc.so.6 ...

Error in function UNIX::SIGSEGV-HANDLER: Segmentation Violation at #xB80E9372.
   [Condition of type SIMPLE-ERROR]

At this stage cmucl becomes unusable. Selecting restart abort just results in
an new segv.
It does not matter which library is loaded, it always fails on the second call,
even when loading two different libraries.

I have tracked this down to dlopen. The bug can also be reproduced like this:
(system::dlopen "/lib/libc.so.6" (logior system::rtld-lazy system::rtld-global))
(system::dlopen "/lib/libc.so.6" (logior system::rtld-lazy system::rtld-global))

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-24 Thread javaJake
Daniel, to be honest, no one can really protect anyone of bugs until
they know about the bugs to protect people against. This is the first
time in a long time (perhaps ever) that this sort of report has been
confirmed.

They've done the best they can to protect people by educating everyone
on the mailing lists the _day_ the report comes in, and sending out an
update that disables the driver. What more can they do?

[Bug 273932] [NEW] Auto Installation of VPN Dependencies

2008-09-24 Thread Ross Peoples
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 6
NetworkManager 0.7.0

By default, the Add button in the VPN tab is disabled if OpenVPN and
other packages are not installed. Instead of disabling the Add button,
perhaps it would be better to ask the user if he/she would like NM to
install the needed packages automatically. Kind of like how the codec
manager works for media files.

I'm guessing this should belong in the Wishlist category, but I found no
way of marking at such, so I apologize if this shows up on the wrong
mailing list.

[Bug 273264] Re: default option not selected in grub menu

2008-09-24 Thread Colin Watson
Thanks. While I haven't yet analysed this enough to figure out whether
it's a grub bug or not (the 'default' option does seem to be being set
properly), KGRUBEditor has mangled that file quite a bit in ways that
will cause other problems (for example it obviously doesn't understand
the 'quiet' command and has removed it rather than leaving it alone).
I'd recommend not using this application in future.

That's weird - that directory should be full of files. Not having
anything in there will break all of our documents, not just the
serverguide. Is there anything strange about your installation?

Remco wrote:

Remco, the GPL specifically constrains what you can do with code, using
copyright law. It's easy to confuse "do whatever you want" with the
carefully constructed, and enforced, freedoms in free software, but they
really are different things. Free software is not a carte blanche to use
other people's work however you want.

>
No, the license is NOT non-free. The GPLv3 explicitly mentions
trademarks and says that it is reasonable to ask people to use a
different name for the results of their modifications while still
protecting the essential freedoms of Free Software.

No, if we want to use the Firefox brand, then we must work with Mozilla,
and that's reasonable. If we don't want to use the brand, they have
kindly given us lots of rights to the code they have so lovingly produced.

>
I feel differently about this. I'm enormously grateful for the work
Mozilla does in giving free software platforms like Linux and Ubuntu a
world-class browser. I'm grateful that we can get access to the very
powerful and meaningful brand - Firefox - and confident that we can work
with Mozilla to make the terms of that access reasonable. To me, it's
important to find a way to respect the wishes of the people that
actually build free software applications. That's not always possible,
and in those cases we want to be gracious about our differences.

How about you? Are you appreciative of Mozilla's work? Do you think it's
reasonable to want to work with them, where we can? Do you contribute a
lot to Mozilla? Do you think it's right to ignore the major contributor
of a big body of work, and even berate them for wanting to create a
strong brand? Do you think the things they are actually asking for here,
now that we've been through this process of engagement with them, are
unreasonable? Or are you simply objecting to the idea that you might
have to work WITH someone instead of just doing what you want?

Sometimes, I think in the free software world we have attitudes that are
ultimately harmful to our own cause, because we think we have rights to
things that we don't really. If we do nothing but berate Mozilla, we
will run the risk of ending up with no ongoing investment in their Linux
work. Why should they bother, if all they get is ungrateful abuse? Linux
is a very small part of their overall user base, remember.

No, that has nothing to do with it. Our packages use "linux" in the
name. If Linus wanted (or the Linux Foundation, I think) then they could
ask us to change them, or stop using the name.

We call the distribution "Ubuntu" and not "Ubuntu Linux" because the
things we care most about are sufficiently well described by that one word.

2008-09-24 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
1) Ah yes, I looked at the wrong dsc. Anyhow, your tarball is 775430
bytes after removing the one file against the original 753320 bytes, so
I would still modify the get-orig-source target to compress with maximum
compression (no level is specified so it uses the default which is 6).

2, 3) OK, I assume that Sebastien is fine with having this too

motu-release ack from me then.

[Bug 273114] Re: Nautilus crashes on boot, even though I'm not running nautilus

2008-09-24 Thread Steven Hirlston
Every time I boot, I get a gray box in the upper left corner. If it
doesn't go away after 30 seconds, I restart X, and I either get a gnome
error (see attached image) about half the time or a regular desktop the
other half of the time. I only get the crash report for nautilus
intermittently.

At the time that I filed this bug, I had compiz and emerald installed. I
have since uninstalled compiz and emerald, but I still get the same
behaviors.

[Bug 273711] Re: New upstream release 0.3

CK 0.3 is available in my PPA for testing.

However, despite patching PK and hal it still doesn't work, I don't get
automatic ACLs on my devices (such as the sound card). This becomes a

this further.

[Bug 229298] Re: Firefox shows menu on wrong screen or not at all.

2008-09-24 Thread Jarno Suni
The bug happens, if I start Firefox when only one screen is on and later
enable dual screen (extended desktop) by xrandr. (I don't know, if
configuring dual screen in xorg.conf would do more good than bad.)

And the bug happens to a Firefox window located in one of the two

[Bug 273189] Re: non-ascii layout/encoding problems at "login" line

2008-09-24 Thread Colin Watson
I'm seeing the same thing in bash, and it really seems to be at the
application level. Here's an strace of it trying to read the £ sign:

read(0, "\302", 1) = 1
write(2, "\302", 1) = 1
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
read(0, "\243", 1) = 1
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
read(0,

In other words, the console is feeding it the right characters, but it's
dropping the second of the two bytes in the UTF-8 representation.

Or ğ:

read(0, "\304", 1) = 1
write(2, "\302", 1) = 1
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
read(0, "\237", 1) = 1
write(2, "\304\237", 2) = 2
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
read(0,

Now, this is actually in X, not at the console, but bash at the console
produced the exact same trace with the £ sign. dash doesn't exhibit
quite the same effects, although it does fail to correctly backspace
over UTF-8 characters.

I know this isn't quite your original problem, but bash is a lot easier
to debug interactively than login. I'm hoping that if I can see the
systemic problem this way then login will be an easier target.
