[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-10-10 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I'm un-subscribing from this bug as well.

Anyone who believes that berating the developer who has (finally)
fixed this bug in the current release of Ubuntu, and offered to fix it
in the LTS release, is constructive desperately needs to re-read the
Ubuntu Code of Conduct.
 * http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct

If you feel that this issue is urgently blocking your organization
from adopting Ubuntu LTS at an enterprise level, I remind you that
contracting commercial support from Canonical or one of the numerous
Ubuntu partners around the globe is always an option.

Dustin, Steve, thank you for your support.
I'll be waiting for the updates on my hardy, and pray to not get in a
situation where this bug will show up ugly on my servers.

I remain subscribed, as I believe guys will make their job done soon.

Good luck!

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-10-10 Thread agent 8131
No one should be taking any of this personally or feel berated. People
should feel free to be honest about their experiences without fear that
doing so will drive away people that could be of help in resolving the
issues. I've been keeping my mouth shut on this bug for a couple of
months and I apologize for being long winded when I finally took the
time to post my experiences.

Dustin Kirkland, you did not offer to fix this problem in the LTS
release. You stated that you would consider it. And that's great, but
without any commitment to fix the problem in 8.04 it would be nice to
actually be able to offer up a simple solution to the people that come
across this page when trying to resolve this bug.

I will not unsubscribe from this bug because I know that people will be
bit by it again, come to me for help, and I wish to have a good solution
for them when they do. I re-read the Code of Conduct and note that
being collaborative seems to be at odds with disengaging when one finds
the process unpleasant. I certainly respect the right of people to do
so but I feel it's a loss to actually making progress on this bug.
Granted, I've only been subscribed for 2 months; if I had been
subscribed for a year I acknowledge I might feel differently.

Since people seem to feel that this hasn't been a friendly exchange I will be
happy to buy a drink of choice to:
1) Anyone that comes up with a good solution to this bug for Ubuntu 8.04 and
8.04.1.
2) Anyone who works to get this bug fixed in 8.04.2.
3) Dustin Kirkland and anyone else who makes sure this bug never appears in
8.10.

[Bug 275608] Re: nm-openvpn Passwords with Certificate (TLS) panel has wrong labels and inverts passwords

2008-10-10 Thread Thierry Carrez
The fixes were reported on upstream SVN. That said, upstream fixed one
more issue with the openvpn panel (the certificate password that was
asked for really was a private key password), so it's probably better
to take the full rev4127 upstream patch.

http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/NetworkManager?view=revisionrevision=4127

The attached debdiff imports the full rev4127 patch (minus Changelog) as
07_panel_fixes.diff :

network-manager-openvpn (0.7~~svn20080928t225540-0ubuntu2) intrepid;
urgency=low

  * Added debian/patches/07_panel_fixes.diff:
- Extracted from upstream SVN (rev 4127)
- Fixes ordering of certificate file selectors in the Passwords with
  certificates case (LP: #275608)
- Fixes passwords swapping when reloading a Passwords with certificates
  configuration
- Renames Certificate password to Private key password, because that's
  what they really are

[Bug 279316] Re: SRU for bind9 to 9.4.2.dfsg.P2 on hardy

2008-10-10 Thread LaMont Jones
The SIGCHASE code is limited to the dig and host commands, and (as far
as I can tell), any regression would be limited to failures when using
the sigchase options (which currently just say invalid option
+sigchase, so they wouldn't particularly be regressions as much as
continued bugs.) The code seems to be checking if sigchase is in use
everywhere that the code behaves differently because of the compile
switch.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,

[Bug 280176] Re: hardy-intrepid upgrade failed

Why should hiding of the cancel button be specific to release upgrades?
That sounds wrong to me, I think the UI should be consistent across all
uses of the debconf GNOME frontend (i.e., hide it in all cases).

[Bug 33649] Re: root raid installs have bad grub config

2008-10-10 Thread tricky1
Who ever beleives that bugs go away by closing them on launchpad

I have a machine with two SATA drives and the following layout:

 o sda1 100M /dos FAT16
 o sda2 large RAID 1 for \ encrypted LVM
 o sda3 small RAID 2 for \boot

 o sdb1 100M /dos FAT16
 o sdb2 large RAID 1 for \ encrypted LVM
 o sdb3 small RAID 2 for \boot

Intrepid Beta does not allow to make such installation and aborts
installation :-(

This IS the same bug for years!!!

And NO, Mr Kirkland, I will not open an new bug for this old stuff you
might have fixed a long time ago.

[Bug 281423] [NEW] [ffe] update dovecot to 1.1.4

2008-10-10 Thread Mathias Gug
Public bug reported:

I'd like to request a FFexception for dovecot 1.1.4. The new release
mainly focuses on fixing indexing issues as well as mbox crashes.

Upstream changelog:

v1.1.4 2008-10-05 Timo Sirainen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

- SORT: Yet another assert-crashfix when renumbering index sort IDs.
- ACL plugin fixes: Negative rights were actually treated as positive
rights. 'k' right didn't prevent creating parent/child/child mailbox.
  ACL groups weren't working.
- Maildir++ quota: Fixes to rebuilding when quota limit wasn't
specified in Dovecot (0 limit or limit read from maildirsize).
- mbox: Several bugfixes causing errors and crashes.
- Several fixes to expire plugin / expire-tool.
- lock_method=dotlock could have deadlocked with itself.
- Many error handling fixes and log message improvements.

v1.1.3 2008-09-02 Timo Sirainen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* mail_max_userip_connections limit no longer applies to master user
  logins.

+ login_log_format_elements: Added %k to show SSL protocol/cipher
  information. Not included by default.
+ imap/pop3-proxy: If auth_verbose=yes, log proxy login failures.
+ deliver: Added -s parameter to autosubscribe to autocreated mailboxes.
- message parser fixes - hopefully fixes an infinite looping problem
- SORT: One more assert-crashfix when renumbering index sort IDs.
- mbox: Saving may have truncated the mail being saved
- mbox: Several other bugfixes
- mail_full_filesystem_access=yes was broken when listing mailboxes
(it still is with maildir++ layout).
- maildirlock utility was somewhat broken
- zlib plugin: bzip2 support was somewhat broken
- NFS: Make sure writing to files via output streams don't
assert-crash when write() returns only partial success.

The merge from Debian experimental also enabled to following feature:

  * debian/control: added libbz2-dev to the Build-Depends to enable the bzip2
support. (Closes: #495129)

The package builds on i386 and amd64. It also installs and upgrades
correctly. All of the dovecot tests from the qa-regression-testing suite
are also successful.

[Bug 180829] [NEW] network storage - cannot access audio/video files only

2008-10-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Using Gutsy, smb, a network hard disk (Maxtor Shared Storage Plus
500Gb).

I have every kind of files on the network share, and on another machine running
Windows XP. I can see and use every files on both, except for audio/video files
on the network share only. So, I can read a .pdf file on the network share and
on the xp share, but not a .mpg or .mp3 on the network share.
If I use my Windows computer to copy a .mp3 file from the share to the XP
computer, then , I can read it from Linux.
The bug is that I can list (ls) those files correctly, but can't do anything
with them (read, write, modify, rename, copy) , not because of an error or unset
permissions, but because it just HANGS. For example, if I have multiple kinds
of files in the same directory, and want to copy a .pdf file using Ubuntu, no
problem, but a .mp3 or .mpg file would hang at the file copy dialog without
even starting the file copy and hang there indefinitely (same for renaming the
file or just accessing it's properties). I have to click 'cancel' or sometimes
hard close the window because it doesn't respond anymore.

The strangest thing is that I CAN use my Windows computer to JUST rename the
file extension from .mp3 to anything else (ex: .ttt) and then it works right
away in Ubuntu!!!. I can then copy the file with Ubuntu and then rename it back
to .mp3.
This happens just with audio/video files of some kinds (mp3,mpg,avi,wav,wma).
Have not tried other audio/video formats.
But ALL other files are OK.

I could use this workaround to just copy files but I wanted to access them
directly from Ubuntu to play them remotely with Movie Player and Totem Player.
Those applications of course hang also if I use them to access those files
directly from the network share.

I have tried this on 2 other Maxtor network storages and it does the same.
Tried using the File Browser logged as a user, tried command-line as root, and
tried using access to shares with smb and cifs. all do the same.
Network shares permissions (and all other permissions for that matter) are all
RW for every users (not so normally , but did it for testing purposes).

## Ubuntu 7.1 Gutsy, updated. Maxtor storage firmware updated.

Done some other tests, with still the same results. See pictures attachments.

I have to add that when renaming the file extension back to '.avi' , it
freezes at the 'renaming progress window' for a while (a few seconds)
and then actually do the renaming. SEE 5-long.png , picture attachment.

The current bug, as described is fixed.

I'm marking this bug as fix released.

That is not the end of the story, though. I have opened a new bug, Bug

virtio disk. Hence, installed systems are not yet bootable. I'm
currently working this. Please post relevant comments to that bug.

[Bug 280823] Re: new kernel wont load / boot

2008-10-10 Thread techno-mole
just an update, after much messing around i have discovered that this
particular issue is not actually the kernel, but with the nvidia 177
driver, from what i can tell my system when i boot up the new kernel
isnt using the new nvidia driver, even though it is installed (at least
according to adept it is)

i have tried selecting hardware drivers from the system menu (kubuntu) and then
activating the 177 driver, but nothing seems to happen, if i then open
nvidia-settings (i do this form a terminal as root, eg - sudo/kdesudo
nvidia-settings)
i get this message -

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X
configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the
X server.

if i do as the message says and run nvidia-xconfig as root when i
restart the x server i then get the issue i first described as a bug
with the new kernel, so it would seem that for some reason my system
doesnt like the new nvidia driver, or isnt using it for some reason.

hope this helps and sorry for any confusion

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-10-10 Thread agent 8131
I think it's time for some tough love. No one would be taking the time
to comment on this if they didn't want to see Ubuntu Server be a better
product. I personally feel this is a significant issue for because it
demonstrates Canonical's interest in supporting an LTS release and
seriousness about becoming a presence in the server market. I know it
can be difficult when people are lambasting a product you've put a lot
of time into, believe me, I got more than my fair share of that this
week. However, sometimes you have to step back and realize that your
product quality has been lower than many people expect and you have to
either step up or risk losing more customers. Make no mistake, this bug
has lost a lot of sysadmins, some of whom had to fight hard to get
Ubuntu onto servers in their workplaces in the first place. I was one
of them, and I know a few more personally. I pitched that it made sense
to have Ubuntu on the Server because of the benefits of the LTS release,
including the longer support time and the large community that
contributes to Ubuntu, therefore leading to more bugs being found and
resolved. However, I doubt I will be able to propose Ubuntu again until
version 10.04. If this bug were to be resolved in 8.04.2 I might at
least start pitching it next year, barring any other bugs of this level
of severity.

To respond to Steve Langasek, while I understand that a lot of these
emails are not terribly useful, this bug is exactly what the SRU team is
supposed to be addressing. There have been many proposed fixes in this
thread and 8 patches uploaded. Do any of them work correctly? Well
that is the question, but it's inaccurate to state that this bug does
not contain proposed fixes. Furthermore this fits the SRU criteria of
being a high impact bug representing a severe regression from earlier
versions and one which also may lead to a loss of user data. When the
average user is confronted with the initramfs shell during a drive
failure I suspect they have the potential to do serious damage to their
file systems in an attempt to fix the problem.

I don't feel it's possible for me to understate the severity of this bug
and how badly sysadmins are going to react when they encounter it or
read about it. It is certainly not the kind of bug one can dismiss in
an LTS release if LTS is to say anything about quality, and hence
suggestions to upgrade to Intrepid, while acceptable to a home user
building a server, are not going to be acceptable in the workplace. If
this is a market segment that Ubuntu Server is catered to than this
issue needs to be addressed. If on the other hand Ubuntu Server is
meant merely for enthusiasts with their home file servers than the
solution should be to make sure that goal is clearly articulated.

To keep us focused on the work at hand and to avail myself of the
opportunity that having this number of people working for fix this bug
represents I'll say that I've tried a number of solutions on this page
but none have been satisfactory. I tried changing the udev rule as
suggested above (see Plnt 2007-12-25) but got the same results that
have been reported: I can get the system to boot any time the disk is
degraded but at the expense that it boots degraded sometimes even when
the disks are fine. This is the setting on my remaining Ubuntu servers
(which will be migrated to Debian in the near future). This option is
suboptimal but better than the default behavior. I would say that the
ideal (and expected) behavior is for the system to boot in the case of a
degraded array by default, with an option to turn that off if the
sysadmin chooses. For those with Ubuntu servers, assuming this never
gets fixed, I think an initramfs script (in /etc/initramfs-
tools/scripts/) that anyone could copy onto their server might be
ideal. Alternatively patching the mdadm udev script to try and start

I'm un-subscribing from this bug as well.

Anyone who believes that berating the developer who has (finally)
fixed this bug in the current release of Ubuntu, and offered to fix it
in the LTS release, is constructive desperately needs to re-read the
Ubuntu Code of Conduct.

[Bug 275700] Re: Kubuntu cannot be fully translated to other language after it is installed.

2008-10-10 Thread Park Shinjo
Change status to 'new'. I cannot understand why this is invalid. I'm currently
using Intrepid, KDE 4.1.2.
1) There is *no* KDE 4.x related po files. As Harald Sitter said, I found the
files for language-pack-kde-$$(-base), there isn't *any* KDE 4.x related
components, like Dolphin, Plasma, etc.
2) Because of it, when I run programs in KDE 4.x, like Dolphin, the program
remains *untranslated* in Kubuntu, but it is already translated in KDE upstream.
I suggest we should split language-pack-kde into language-pack-kde and
language-pack-kde3, which contains translations from KDE 4 and 3.

[Bug 277753] Re: Updating to intrepid beta messes grub's menu.lst hds

2008-10-10 Thread Steve Langasek
The configuration file modified is the warning about conflicting
settings; it warns you that:

A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version
installed currently has been locally modified.

I.e.: you've changed the 'root' setting by hand and have not updated the
'groot' template. So when you choose install maintainer's version,
you're telling update-grub to reset the entries to all point to (hd0,0)
again, since that's what the groot entry says.

You need to change your groot entry to point at the right device,
otherwise update-grub will continue o get it wrong.

As for this:

I think that conflict between the configurations should lead by
default to the file not being updated

that /is/ the default; if you chose install maintainer's version,
that's a non-default option.

So while I would like for us to be able to make this more robust, that's
really not possible with the current grub; and the system is working as
it was designed to do. Marking this bug 'wontfix'.

[Bug 255590] Re: System beep goes nuts on start up

I'm getting this now with 2.6.27-6-generic amd64, ever since ALSA broke

Ubuntu screen with progress indicator. It does eventually boot, it just
beeps annoyingly for a long time. On one reboot, I pressed ctrl-alt-f7
and that stopped the beeping.

[Bug 13116] Re: apt cache can swell to gigantic proportions

2008-10-10 Thread Eduardo Cereto
Still buggy with Intrepid.

Just a n00b question here. Isn' t it necessary to have the package to
remove or update it? So it run those remove scripts and such? I' m just
wondering if I clean the packages and after that If I want to update
them I will have to re-download the package just to remove it. If that's
so I prefer to keep the package.

I can't reproduce and get a stacktrace: this happened once, just after
my upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. I won't reinstall 7.10 to be able to
upgrade again.

[Bug 270781] Re: unix_chkpwd crashes on gnome-screensaver

2008-10-10 Thread Steve Langasek
The contents of /etc/pam.d/* are immaterial, here; we know that it's the
unix_chkpwd process that's segfaulting, which means pam_unix must be
involved. And I have seen bugs more recently whereby pam_unix will fail
open if unix_chkpwd crashes unexpectedly; but the only case where I've
/seen/ unix_chkpwd crash unexpectedly has been with a bug that post-
dates the version in hardy.

So what would really help here is a backtrace of unix_chkpwd's crash.

I just updated some pulseaudio drivers and rebooted and it only beeped
once this time. It's still a regression compared to last week though
when it didn't used to beep at all.
