[Bug 134856] Re: Harddisk to slow on HP 6715s

2008-10-28 Thread SimonW
Hey knuutsen,

the current version of 8.10 works with Kernel 2.6.25 (however I don't
know if support won't be dropped). This kernel supports all Hardware-
Components of the 6715s, including WLAN. I uploaded two ready-made .deb
Packages, with work well on my machine (6715s).

1. Install Intrepid
2. Get .deb them from:
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=nnpwrfzycfc
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=dyy3xv4j3lb

(If you like, source from:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.25.2.tar.bz2)

3. Install Test 2.6.25.2
4. If it works, remove all 2.6.27 kernel packages, including linux-image,
linux-headers-generic, linux-generic to prevent the system from installing
kernel-updates.

Best regards,
Simon

[Bug 288099] Re: notifier icon (unprivileged users) not appearing

2008-10-28 Thread H. Cohen
Only works in a limited sense, meaning it's not useful:

[reg [EMAIL PROTECTED] name]:~$ update-notifier --force
  PID TTY TIME CMD
 5756 ?00:00:04 pulseaudio

Cursor sits just below the last line with no indication of further
processing. Yes the icon appears, however, if I stop the process
[Ctl-C] the notifier icon disappears.

I tried these options, without success too:

[reg [EMAIL PROTECTED] name]:~$ /usr/bin/python
/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --force
Usage: apt-check [options]

apt-check: error: no such option: --force

[reg [EMAIL PROTECTED] name]:~$ /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/update-notifier --force
/usr/bin/python: '/usr/lib/update-notifier' is a directory, cannot continue

and this too failed:

[reg [EMAIL PROTECTED] name]:~$ /usr/bin/python update-notifier --force
/usr/bin/python: can't open file 'update-notifier': [Errno 2] No such file or
directory

A.K.A. clutching at straws. If you have any other suggestions I will be
glad to try them.

Thanks for the interest, it helps knowing it should work.

[Bug 290299] Re: extremly slow system

2008-10-28 Thread Michael
** Description changed:

The system is unacceptable slow, eg starting firefox takes between 50
and 90 seconds (on vista on the same machine 10 seconds), starting the
first gnome-terminal takes around 20 seconds.

  I am using Ubuntu 8.10 rc1 on a HP-Compaq 6715s
  CPU: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58
  Memory: 2GB
Graphics: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]

I asume that the problem is related to fglrx but I am not able to ensure
that. Using top I can see that Xorg always consumes between 10 and 15 %
  CPU.

Beside that Linux always runs the fan with full speed, even if the

[Bug 289360] Re: STA/wl driver will not activate

2008-10-28 Thread pstucke
Thanks Al, your version of rc.local did not work for me. As a follow-up
to one of your previous posts, on the couple of occasions where the STA
driver was available to me in jockey, it was no longer available (or
visible) in jockey after I selected it and rebooted, and I'm still
without wireless.

I have gone as far are reinstalling 8.04, applying the updates, and
using the feisty no fluff wireless workaround to get wireless working.
My wireless is available after I upgrade to 8.10 (without loading the
STA or b43 drivers that appear in jockey), but as soon as I select the
STA driver and reboot, I lose wireless.

Can anyone tell me which package contains the STA driver, so I can do a
manual install (without using jockey)?

[Bug 281737] Re: with newest x.org and nvidia chipset, if input sections are missing from xorg.conf, they are not available in an X session

2008-10-28 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
taken from the intrepid release notes
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes):

The X.Org configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) still has InputDevice
entries for the mouse and keyboard, but they are ignored now because
input-hotplug is used. The keyboard settings now come from /etc/default
/console-setup; to change them please use sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-
setup. After that, HAL and X need to be restarted (e.g., by rebooting
your system).

[Bug 139514] Re: raid10 support should be added to installer

2008-10-28 Thread Jerome Haltom
I'd be suprised if GRUB is ever able to boot from RAID10. That type of
heavy block swapping logic would be very out of place in GRUB... and
you'd not be able to get the boot sector working right anyways. The
/boot partition will need to be a mirror or plain partition. I don't see
this changing.

The installer should just make sure that /boot is something compatible.
RAID1 or plain partition, with compatible file system.

[Bug 290325] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex RC: Belkin F5D6001 (rtl8180): Weak Signal

2008-10-28 Thread C. Reis
Public bug reported:

In the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Release Candidate (live disc), the wireless-lan card
Belkin F5D6001 shows a very weak signal strength.
While the card works only with the net8180 windows driver and ndiswrapper under
Hardy Heron 8.04 with ~80% signal strength, the rtl8180 driver module in 8.10
will recognize the card properly but with a signal strength of only 5 to 10%.
This seems to affect the connection speed of upload/download as well, so I
guess it's not just a problem with the display of the signal strength.
I see a similarity to the following reported bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/275230

If I can provide with further information, please feel free to let me
know.

[Bug 290324] [NEW] Cant set up bluetooth mouse on Kubuntu 8.10

2008-10-28 Thread dumas33
Public bug reported:

In kubuntu 8.04 it was a tool (Kbluetooth, I think; bluetooth logo in system
tray). It was possible to set up bluetooth mouse or other device using GUI. In
8.10 I cant load any such application, so I need to go to terminal to set up
mouse. It is very not user friendly, cause many user do not know, how to do
that.
I would categorize that like regression from 8.04.

[Bug 205516] Re: [HardyBeta] Title Bar of Current Window Turns Pinkish with Hazey Text Scrambled Trying to Display on It

2008-10-28 Thread Christian A. Reiter
Yes, I think this is a nvidia bug (and I think prop. driver, using 1.73) on
Intrepid RC, but I have often seen this in Hardy.
The title bar gets invisivle, or striped, or scrambled.

I have another screenshot, but it is just randomly another openoffice
screenshot, it happens with other apps.

I don't know exactly, but I THINK it happens with apps that are not native gtk,
could that be?
Like Thunderbird, Firefox, Openoffice etc.

[Bug 289921] Re: network interface does not come up after installing open-vm-tools

2008-10-28 Thread ravidgemole
The bug here appears to be in the packaging, not the init script and/or
code.

Example, I am using pcnet32/vmxnet with init.d. The upstream wiki says that I
need to have the following in my modprobe config (I have it in
modprobe.d/open-vm-tools):
install pcnet32 /sbin/modprobe -q --ignore-install vmxnet; /sbin/modprobe -q
--ignore-install pcnet32 $CMDLINE_OPTS; /bin/true;
(source: http://open-vm-tools.wiki.sourceforge.net/Packaging)

Without this, rebooting will cause the eth device to fail, as Craig
described.

[Bug 290329] [NEW] Simple Backup crashs silently if an io error occurs while doing backup and restoration

2008-10-28 Thread Jean-Peer Lorenz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbackup

Simple Backup crashs silently if an io error occurs while doing backup
and restoration:

If an io error occurs an exception is raised and the creation of a backup fails
silently. Same holds for the restore process.
An io error happens for instance if a directory contains a 'socket'. SBackup
tries to store this 'file' but the access fails.

At least a message should appear to inform the user that an error
happened! The better way would be to catch such non 'files' before
storing them.

I have removed and re-installed the fglrx driver several times to try

[Bug 290333] [NEW] [intrepid] xorg locks up on startup; IBM Thinkpad T20

2008-10-28 Thread Sam Thursfield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The default intrepid install locks up during the startup of xorg. The result is
a black screen, and dead keyboard - not even ctrl+alt+bksp or alt+sysrq+r do
anything.
I believe it occasionally did open the display, but with dead keyboard and
mouse - this is very difficult to reproduce however.

When I edit xorg.conf, and add:

Subsection Module
Disable dri
EndSubsection

It loads and works absolutely fine.

[Bug 290332] [NEW] [intrepid] fix for suspend / resume on HP TC1100

2008-10-28 Thread Bartek
Public bug reported:

Outlined below are steps to get suspend / resume functionality fully
working on intrepid on a HP TC1100 tablet. Incredibly, it suspends and
resumes in less than 3 seconds each way making it highly usable. (Big
Kudos to pm-utils developers!)

My version of the TC1100 came with an atheros wireless card. However,
the ath_pci driver does not seem to survive a suspend without being
explicitly listed.

If it is not listed, when waking up the card appears to be working fine
but, even after hundreds of tries, I cannot log into the network (WPA-
PSK here), it keeps asking me for the password. Unloading and reloading
the ath_pci module and manually doing step (3) fixes it.

This is how I got it working automatically

1) module tc1100-wmi MUST be loaded, it provides controls for turning wireless
on and off
2) create /etc/pm/config.d/config with SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci
3) create a script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ to turn off wireless and turn on
wireless again using the tc1100-wmi interface (see 35wireless attachment)

Find attached lspci, lsusb and aforementioned script

Known isssues:
tc1100-wmi cannot be used to probe the state of the wireless card, cat
/sys/devices/platform/tc1100-wmi/wireless ALWAYS reports 0 whether wireless is
off or on. This means that if wireless was off when suspending, it will wake up
with wireless turned on.

[Bug 290335] [NEW] Update-manager should not block for config diffs on distribution upgrade

2008-10-28 Thread Luke Hoersten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Distribution upgrades should not block for user input by default. An
upgrade can take a few hours and non-tech people never know what to do
with the diffs anyway. Instead, all my configs could just be moved to
some backup or .orig location and then the user can be notified or
prompted to merge at the end. No need to block the entire upgrade
process (which is especially annoying if left running overnight and the
user comes back to find out it's only at 18% and waiting for them to
pick between prompt and Prompt in some diff.

Re: [Bug 289982] Re: PS3: NetworkManager cannot connect to WPA/WPA2 wireless networks

2008-10-28 Thread Dan Munckton
asac thanks for your reply.

I wasn't sure where in the network stack this problem would be coming
from so I dumped it on Network Manager to start with.

The PS3 uses these drivers

ps3_gelic_net
ps3_gelic_wireless

I had my eye on the following upstream patch [0], do you think this is
likely to be related? If so I'll test it and arrange for it to be to
included in the PS3 kernel as an SRU if it works.

Cheers

Dan

[Bug 289466] Re: Network Manager 0.7 applet not Appearing if there are managed entries in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-10-28 Thread Steven Harper
I still think that this is a bug

I have an eth0 this is disconnected, and as you see from my log its
disconnected and gets this in the log

Oct 26 12:40:40 uber-ubuntu NetworkManager: info Unmanaged Device
found; state CONNECTED forced

Now I have got an entry for eth1, this should be ignored by NM, however I don't
think this is a good reason to have NO
NM in the tray. NM should be there with a greyed out eth0 and an uneditable
eth1 (because its managed).

Same at me, just that I have cable FTTH connection and not wireless. So I don't
know if this is the same problem.
It died yesterday and some time ago. The first time I managed to get it back on
with hard reset on my modem.
No even that doesn't help.
I'm using Kubuntu 8.10 RC.
It might not be a this bug at me, as once it didn't work on my Windows as well,
but I didn't give it much thought I just went back to
Kubuntu and it worked fine...
I ran dhclient and it said that my network is sleeping (I don't know exactly
what it said)

[Bug 290337] [NEW] Fails to connect to wireless network

2008-10-28 Thread jasonmartens
Public bug reported:

When attempting to connect to the wireless network at school, network
manager tries for a long time, but never succeeds. I am attaching the
syslog output from a connection attempt. I can manually connect to this
network with the following wpa_supplicant.conf file:

network={
ssid=Northwestern
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
eap=PEAP
identity=username
password=pass
phase2=auth=MSCHAPV2
}

Note, this is on an up to date (as of today) Intrepid system.

[Bug 289528] Re: gnucash menu icon is wrong

2008-10-28 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your comment. According to the fact that the problem
disappeared by itself and that I was not able to reproduce it on a fresh
intrepid installation, I set the status to invalid. This sounds more
like GNOME not correctly updating menus until it is restarted.

** Changed in: gnucash (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Invalid

Re: [Bug 288099] Re: notifier icon (unprivileged users) not appearing

2008-10-28 Thread H. Cohen
 Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please try to run update-notifier with the --force option ?
There might be a bug in the 8.04 and 8.10 version that its not honored.
If that is the case, please let me know.

Tried it. While the notifier icon appeared the terminal seems to hang.
If it is safe to leave a terminal in this condition I could use this
option. I reported the results beneath the bug report. This email is
just to let you know I responded. [I still do not think this is a real
bug, had I known of the Questions area that's where I would have posted my
question.]

Thanks for the interest.

Status in “update-notifier” source package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
This is really not a bug: it's a design issue and I understand the logic
 for the current choice.

However, under the desktop 6.06 it was possible to have an unprivileged
user see the icon, which I know can irritate some users: Bug #47253

But the option was available to hide the icon from such users (which makes
great sense on a corporate desktop). I think the option should be
available under 8.04 to allow a select set to be aware when updates are
 required.

I happen to like the Ubuntu security model where any user is not by
default assigned permanent administrative rights. I wrote about it in:
 http://bst-softwaredevs.com/apps/articles/ubuntu-8-04-sudo-user.html and
described a method I thought would allow the update-notifier to be running
on a unprivileged user's desktop. However, I discovered the sudo users
account had to be active, which potentially negates the security
advantages of having a sudo user identity. I have experimented and so far
I have not found a way to give visibility to the notifier without giving
 that user administrative rights.

If such an option does not exist, I suggest that it be consider as an
addition (i.e. a non-default allowing selected non-sudo right users to see
the notifier icon). Unlike the user reporting the bug #4725, I want to
keep the sudo account closed unless I am doing administrative work on my
machine. As the Ubuntu unprivileged user I spend time doing webmaster
functions on my site. Hence, if during that exposure access to this
account is obtained I would prefer not to give an easy escalation to my
root level account. I do take precautions, e.g. my sudo account has a
much more complex password. But my preference is to stay within a low
rights account and change users to perform administrative tasks only when
 needed.

I apologize for being so verbose, however, I am attempted to make clear
that I am only seeking what was available previously as a non-default
option. I think others even in some business environments would
 appreciate the same functionality.

 TIA, TxtEdMacs
