[Bug 123920] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Keyboard/Mouse don't work

2008-11-05 Thread buzz
I've just spent a little more time trying to work out what the issue is.
I had a pretty loaded machine a couple of days ago.

I've booted up. I have two mice attached to the machine, one dinovo the
other a usb mouse. The usb mouse works fine and fast. The dinovo mouse
exhibits the following:

1. if I move the mouse very, very slowly then the mouse moves in an
expected fashion.

2. if I speed up the movement of the mouse it begins to judder. It moves
smoothly for a couple of millimeters, pauses then jumps a couple of
millimeters, as though the bluetooth streaming is slow and ubuntu is
always playing catch-up.

When I'm just using ubuntu normally, this is not an issue. When I'm
using netbeans and the mouse movements go though a fair amount of
additional processing, then the juddering steps up another level and, as
I posted above, I keep on having to compensate for the mouse position.
I've actually just noticed it again, here, whilst writing this. If I
move the mouse to edit another part of this port, more likely than not,
as I'm about to click the right button with the mouse stationary it will
jump past the correct position and I will then have to move the mouse
back a fraction.

The dinovo dongle is less than half a meter from the mouse.

When I used the dinovo in previous versions of ubuntu I was never
aware/conscious of this behaviour.

Using the usb mouse gives no such problems.

Once again, a thousand thanks for getting dinovo to work.

Cheers

Can you please reference discussion with the openssl folks?

I didn't try to reach them myself yet, as I'm not very involved with
openssl development.

If we do this, we should add the patch to the source package and build
two binary packages, one with the patch and one without. Then we built
the wpasupplicant package against the patched one.

This means a giant maintanence overhead which I'm not willing to support
unless you can clearly point to conversations with upstream that show
with what reasons they reject that patch.

I'm as well online in an enterprise environment without needing that
patch. don't overexaggerate.

[Bug 294570] [NEW] Exponential distribution functions are broken

2008-11-05 Thread Brent Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: octave3.0

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 with octave3.0-1:3.0.1-6ubuntu1 installed and it
appears that the exponential distribution functions exppdf expcdf, and
expinv give erroneous results. The definitions for these functions are:

exppdf: lambda*e^(-lambda*x)
expcdf: 1-e^(-lambda*x)
expinv: -ln(1-p)/lambda

so using lambda = 0.1, x = 0.1, and p = 0.5 one would expect the
following results:

exppdf = 0.0099005
expcdf = 0.0099502
expinv = 6.9315

however, that's not the results that I'm getting:

octave:74> exppdf(0.1, 0.1)
ans =  3.6788
octave:75> expcdf(0.1, 0.1)
ans =  0.63212
octave:76> expinv(0.5, 0.1)
ans =  0.069315

Interestingly enough, the obsoleted exponential_ functions give the
correct results:

octave:77> exponential_pdf(0.1, 0.1)
ans =  0.099005
octave:78> exponential_cdf(0.1, 0.1)
warning: exponential_cdf is obsolete and will be removed from a future version
of Octave; please use expcdf instead
ans =  0.0099502
octave:79> exponential_inv(0.5, 0.1)
ans =  6.9315

[Bug 292159] Re: MASTER update-initramfs is disabled since running on a live CD but it is running from a flash drive.

2008-11-05 Thread AdrianChallinor
The attempted upgrade on my system then caused the USB memory stick to
not be recognized as a boot device. To be clear, this memory stick had
successfully been used to boot a Lenovo T500 laptop. An upgrade was
attempted, initiated from the upgrade manager, which failed in the now
well reported bug. Following this the USB Stick was not recognised as
bootable media when the same laptop was rebooted.

Rational for building the USB Memory Stick from a Live CD was because
core system is an AMD-64 bit version of Ubuntu. I specifically wanted
the memory stick to boot an I386 based laptop and desktop.

Advantages of having a USB memory stick boot are so many to list.

What happens exactly?

Can you please open a Terminal window and so

  sudo killall jockey-backend
  sudo /usr/share/jockey/jockey-backend --debug -l /tmp/jockey.log

then open Hardware Drivers, try to enable a driver, close it again, go

[Bug 294568] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 incorrectly installs nvidia-glx-173 with nvidia gforce fx5600 pci video card instead of the correct nvidia-glx-71 driver

2008-11-05 Thread Grey Blackbeard
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrade from previous version, 8.10 installed nvidia-glx-173. I do not
know what nvidia driver was used in the previous version.
Upon rebooting it was stuck in a loop where it would not start in graphics
mode, then would try to start in low graphics mode, then would refuse to start
in graphics mode. With some tinkering from the command line Gnome would start
as /root in low graphics mode. A bit of troubleshooting found the incorrect
driver (or at least incorrectly working driver) and I switched to nvidia-glx-71.
Both drivers say they are for the Nvidia gforce fx5600 card but I could repeat
the problem when I switched back over to the -173 driver. The -71 driver has
never failed with either Gnome nor KDE 4 (wow, what a change!)

System is:
Asus motherboard,
AMD 2200+ processor
640 meg. ram

[Bug 294569] [NEW] update-notifier not started if UID < 500

Binary package hint: update-notifier

My UID is 352. It is like that to match my UID on the NFS file-server.
Now since my upgrade to intrepid I don't see the update-notifier anymore

code:

[Bug 280526] Re: [Intrepid] Power to USB devices not killed on suspend

2008-11-05 Thread Han Pilmeyer
This is part of my dmesg.log. I also seem to have a kernel issue during
suspend/wakeup. I've only added the last part of my dmesg as the total
one is very long and messy. I could add a cleaner one if that would
help.

Sounds great!

Well, you can update...

Truth that my main development platform is Debian, and not Ubuntu. But
instead of patching on your side, you should have send me a diff with
all the modifications you did, so I could send them in our Git and
release with your patches...

Well, I hope that my package will be updated to the latest version in
Debian testing (currently 0.29.14-1).

If somebody from Ubuntu reads this, please get in touch with me and let
me know what is the procedure to get things uploaded in Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-05 Thread dAF2000
Biji, check my post of 22/10/2008:

"I didn't do the fix as reported by Daniel, because I my case the bug is
surely in another part of the script. In my case it's in
mute_and_zero_levels_on_card() called during mute_and_zero_levels. I've
added debugging to test.

In the for loop all kind of devices are muted and almost all entries
take a few seconds. The error I get is "amixer: Unable to find simple
control '', 0". The first error I get is "Synth", so amixer works
fine for Master, PCM etc which are first in the list. For non working
devices, amixer wait a couple of seconds and the whole for loop takes
ages.

So, (in my case) the real problem is that amixer is too slow if non-
existing devices are muted. By the way, the step store_levels() takes
only a few seconds."

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-11-05 Thread ThomasLee82
I have been applying a patch to this bug in Central Illinois. I am a
member of an organization called "Freecycle" (http://www.freecycle.org)
and have been using their network to distribute X/Kubuntu-loaded
computers to people in need. I figure that, since Microsoft would only
end up charging them so much to keep Windows, I may as well take it upon
myself to provide a more reasonable alternative.

I do distribute the computers with the ubuntu-restricted-extras and WINE
installed, but that is due to user-friendliness more than anything.
After all, I know more than a few people - even people on this very
forum - would be quite upset if they got a computer and found out that
it wouldn't play MP3s.

[Bug 294564] [NEW] PPTP connection frequently dropped with "short read (-1)"

2008-11-05 Thread ngc2997
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

Package: 0.7~~svn20081015t024626-0ubuntu1

Since Ubuntu 8.10, my office VPN connection (PPTP) frequently drops
with:

Nov 6 07:46:18 Antares pptp[6352]: nm-pptp-service-6346
warn[decaps_gre:pptp_gre.c:331]: short read (-1): Message too long

Actually, this happens when generating traffic by e.g. calling web sites
that are routed over VPN (office intranet) or when working with an RDP
connection over VPN, but _not_ when being connected to my office machine
with a VNC session over VPN (strange though).

Is this perhaps related to the missing MTU configuration since NM 0.7?
The VPN connection, when established, reads as follows:

[Bug 206129] Re: Warning during boot: WARNING: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/2.6.24/12-generic/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha-.ko): No such device

2008-11-05 Thread Marc Buigues
Making a clean install (I haven't tried with an upgrade, sorry) solved
the problem for me (it happened in Hardy but seems to be solved in
Intrepid, at least in my machine, I use Intrepid 32 bits).

The only thing is that the graphical bootsplash turns to text mode just
after entering my passphrase, as it did in Hardy hwne the padlock error
appeared. I don't really know if it this is related in any way.

[Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages

2008-11-05 Thread Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason
I understand the inherent difficulty in determining if a package is a
manually installed third-party package or obsolete as discussed earlier
in this thread. One additional detection the tool might want to do in
the future if and when it gets included in a release again is to check
if the package is currently being used or vital to the system. The
attached screenshots shows it suggesting that I remove my currently
running kernel.

Guys, if the ~nodither deb above does *not* solve the issue for you,
then you don't have this bug, but some other unrelated bug that just
shares similar symptoms. So in this case you should file a new bug
report.

Also, I've written up some troubleshooting/workaround documentation for
startup failures at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution and
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Resolution.

[Bug 294557] [NEW] journal give wrong date by default

2008-11-05 Thread yasker
Public bug reported:

When I want to write a new journal, I click "New Journal" on the left up
conner of kontact. And it always gives the same default date, e.g.
11/03/2008, and title, e.g. "Journal for 11/3/08", rather than today.
It's confusion that it would work in this way... And everytime I have to
edit the date manually as well as title...

I think it's not designed... Thanks!

[Bug 282868] Re: hugin crashes before saving project

2008-11-05 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

Can you try with the version I have in my ppa? It's final version 0.7.0, and
it's working for me in Intrepid.
You can find it at http://ppa.launchpad.net/fabricesp/ubuntu.

And use the parameters that are references in bug #162575 for autopano.

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 272632] Re: Pidgin freezes sporadically in Intrepid

2008-11-05 Thread Román Contreras
Actually I don't know if I have the exact same trouble, since in my case,
pidgin totally freezes.
I have tried what Marquer suggested, but I didn't have the expected output.

Anyway, I ran pidgin in debug mode for some time expecting to find the
specific event that triggered the froze; after some time (and a lot of
output) I found the following error :

(22:52:27) gstreamer: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

[Bug 293200] Re: (COMPIZ ???) Laptop with 8.10 crashes randomly CAPS lock flashes...

2008-11-05 Thread Elias K Gardner
Im still unable to reproduce this reliably I tried a fair amount today
and only had it happen once. I have not tried with compiz off. Its too
bad we have not attracted the attention of someone more knowledgeable
yet. If it continues to appear to be a compiz bug at some point we
should mark it as affecting compiz and report it upstream to the compiz
bugtracker. I don't know at what point his makes sense.
