[Bug 271350] Re: Printing stopped working after upgrade to Intrepid

2008-11-14 Thread Till Kamppeter
If you get the same broken results as before after doing my pdftopdf
short circuit, do not undo the short circuit for the following test.
Otherwise, undo it with

sudo mv /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf.orig /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf

It looks like that one of the filter produces broken PDF and the next
filter (most probably cpdtocps which calls pdftops which in turn calls
/usr/bin/pdftops and that one uses libpoppler as the PDF renderer). The
errors and warnings in the error log show that libpoppler is complaining
and not Ghostscript (Linux has two PDF renderers: libpoppler and
Ghostscript).

Let us run the filter chain stopping one step before cpdftocps:

cupsfilter -m application/vnd.cups-pdf -p
/etc/cups/ppd/.ppd > output.pdf 2> error_log.txt

Attach the two output files output.pdf and error_log.txt to this bug
report.

Does error_log.txt contain warnings or errors? Does output.pdf get
created and is it not empty?

Try to display output.pdf on the screen. Start with evince. Is it
correctly displayed? Or does it show artifacts similar to your
printouts?

Try to display it with Ghostscript by running

gs output.pdf

Does this work better? Or does it show the same problems?

Try also

cupsfilter -m application/pdf -p /etc/cups/ppd/.ppd >
output2.pdf 2> error_log2.txt

This leaves out the pdftopdf filter (so doing this test makes only sense
if you did not short-circuit pdftopdf). Do the same steps as described
above with the output files.

Try finally

cupsfilter -m application/vnd.cups-postscript -p
/etc/cups/ppd/.ppd > output3.ps 2> error_log3.txt

This adds the execution of cpdftocps. Proceed with the output files as
described above. For screen-displaying the output, use only Ghostscript:

gs output3.ps

Does this file display correctly?

[Bug 296663] Re: Fn-F1 (wireless does not work on FSC Amilo Pa 3515

2008-11-14 Thread Margate
Update:

This morning I played around with keyboard types while watching
/proc/interrupts and somehow I managed to turn on the wireless LED, I
didn't noticed right away, so am not sure witch layout was enabled when
it happened, afterwards I tried to toggle again with the different
keyboard profiles i have tried with no luck; I will try again doing this
weekend while watching LED instead of /proc/interrupts, are there any
other files I should watch there are closer to Keyboard Handling?

Anyway, I now know that missing Fn-F1 functionality is the cause of my
missing Wireless; while the LED was on I had no problem loading ath_pci
and accessing by wireless network.

Margate

[Bug 298195] [NEW] Unziping an archive with nautilus crashes with certain characters

2008-11-14 Thread Xavier Marchegay
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version : 8.10
Gnome version : 2.24.1
Language : french

Steps to reproduce the crash :

1. Open nautilus
2. Create an archive with the # character in the name.
3. Right-click on the archive and select "Extraire Ici" ("Extract Here" in
french).
4. Nautilus fails at unzipping the archive.

Error message :

Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'extraction des fichiers.
Opération non prise en charge

An error occured while the extraction
Operation not included
(not a perfect translation sorry but I do not know the English error message).

However, you can unzip the archive by opening the archive with the
archive manager then extract.

I contact several people and they have the same problem.

This is my first bug submission so I miss some pieces of information
please let me know. I tried to look for a similar bug submission

I'm not sure what the bug is here (since there are multiple comments

[Bug 298192] [NEW] [ath9k] AR5008/AR5416 802.11n wireless card performs very slowly

2008-11-14 Thread Aaron Kelley
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 8.10.

I have a wireless card with the Atheros AR5008 chipset (802.11n), and it
uses the ath9k driver. The performance of this card in Ubuntu is
terrible.

On an 802.11n network, where I often connect in Windows or OS X at a
reported speed of 130 mbps (with none of these speed issues); iwconfig
in Ubuntu reports that I am connected at 1 mbps. I do not know if the
information iwconfig is presenting is accurate, however, there is a
noticeable drop in the speed of local transfers (i.e., transferring
files over a LAN is very slow, controlling a machine via VNC crawls).
Switching to a 100 mbps resolves all speed issues, when the difference
shouldn't be that noticeable.

I've also noticed, that the delay slider in Keyboard Preferences does

setting with the highest. The highest will have a long delay but it's
still way too short. I keep typing liiie thisss when I let my guard

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will intermittently stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama

2008-11-14 Thread Travis Hegner
I am also suffering from the same bug.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux it-thegner 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:06 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Ubuntu 8.10 amd64
3.0 Ghz quad core
8 Gb RAM

I am running three monitors on two nvidia cards (8800 GT / 8600 GT),
with xinerama.

I found on a post somewhere to try (sorry no link handy):

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSection

This has significantly reduced the number of times that it happens, but
it still happens 1-3 times per day.

As with everyone else, the only fix is a full reboot, or an X restart
(ctrl-alt-backspace).

Another oddity that I've noticed with this bug, I am still able to alt-
tab between apps, and ctrl-alt-arrow, to switch workspaces, but the
little notification window that pops up with those actions is seems to
be 'stuck' on one monitor, where normally it is on whichever monitor the
cursor is on.

As someone else mentioned above with the mouse events on the wrong
monitor: I have noticed that the cursor will still change (i.e. to the
text beam), but not where it's supposed to, if i have gedit running on
my center monitor, the cursor will change on the right monitor in the
area that would be the text area if gedit were running on the right
monitor. Likewise for a nautilus window on the left monitor, the cursor
will change to a text beam on the center monitor in what would be the
path space of the nautilus folder. Sorry for the mouth-full on that one,
I hope you followed it OK.

I have also disabled my screen saver because others out there have
attributed similar problems to gnome-screensaver, but I haven't seen any
difference since then.

I'm not sure what else I should provide. If I can be of any help with
information of symptoms, let me know.

[Bug 271350] Re: Printing stopped working after upgrade to Intrepid

2008-11-14 Thread Till Kamppeter
The short-circuit filter did not get created for you. Do the following
commands:

sudo -s
mv /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf.orig
cat > /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf << EOF
#!/bin/sh
cat \$6
EOF
chmod 755 /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf
exit

Note that all commands between "sudo -s" and "exit" are executed as root
(you have a prompt ending with "#").

Does your printing work correctly now?

Excuse me for bothering you with this - I could solve the problem with
the support of ubuntuusers.de forum, the problem was a non existing

Only thing left to answer is, why the file was not there in the first
place! ;)

[Bug 292159] Re: MASTER update-initramfs is disabled since running on a live CD but it is running from a flash drive.

2008-11-14 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic

unaltered ibex, ran from usb pendrive - prepared by "create a usb
startup disk". I ran update manager to update packages and played some
mp3 file from hard disk, when the update manager reported an error,
  moreover the totem player hang.

The kernel upgrade fail with the following message:
  Setting up linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic (2.6.27-7.14) ...
  Running depmod.
update-initramfs is disabled since running on a live CD
  Failed to symbolic-link /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic to initrd.img.
  dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 17

  :: Rationale ::
If it's not possible to upgrade the kernel, that's fine. But in that case,
the kernel version should be locked for live CD / live USB bootups. (e.g. in
Synaptic via "Lock Version" in the "Package")

Currently, "sudo apt-get upgrade" is forever broken, because it always
tries & fails to install the kernel update. This is a huge turn-off for
anyone trying out "usb-creator"-built persistent USB installations.

+ :: Workaround ::
+ Workaround discussed here:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3096170
+ in brief
+ "A bit of digging has revealed that the /usr/sbin/update-initramfs script is
a stub on the live CD (or the bootable USB drive made from a live CD). The
original version can be found in:
+
+ /rofs/usr/sbin/update-initramfs
+ so you can (as root):
+ mv /usr/sbin/update-initramfs /usr/sbin/update-initramfs.old
+ and then:
+ ln -s /rofs/usr/sbin/update-initramfs /usr/sbin/update-initramfs
+ "

[Bug 298177] [NEW] OpenOffice 3.0 save to smb network fails

2008-11-14 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Open Office 3.0 (launchpad repository) fails to save a document to a
mounted smb share.

On save, the dialog to enter username and password appears (with guest
preset and addressing MSHOME). Changing the username and password (I
can't change MSHOME to the correct domain name) fails to save the
document.

This worked both with 2.4 and 3.0 before.

Ubuntu 8.10, OpenOffice 3.0 Build 9358

[Bug 298179] [NEW] Installing Sagetv (without activation key) breaks ubuntu boot-up

2008-11-14 Thread cenora
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the "15 day trial" DEB installer from SageTV website.

During the package installation, Sage asks for an activation key. I have none,
and just wanted to test the 15 day trial.
Program refused to continue to install (without activation key), so I quit the
installer window.

During the next boot, Ubuntu drops to the text message and displays:

"Starting SageTV server: sagetvChanging to SageTV directory /opt/sagetv/server
Please enter your activation key..."

Tried to CTRL-everything to at least get back to Ubuntu X server to
uninstall the program, but nothing continues the boot process.

I do realize that SageTV messed up.
The problem is that NO PROGRAM should break Ubuntu from starting up.

Finally, to "fix" the problem, the user must:
1. CTRL+ALT+F1
2. sudo apt-get remove sagetv-server

This problem happened to others and solution is posted at:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31151

[Bug 298181] [NEW] Hugin will not start; missing library libImath.so.2

2008-11-14 Thread Nattgew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hugin

I'm using Intrepid with hugin_0.7.0~svn3191+beta5-2ubuntu1, running x86_64
When I try to run hugin, it gives me:
hugin: error while loading shared libraries: libImath.so.2: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
As far as I can tell, I have that library installed through openexr, and I've
tried removing and reinstalling both that and all hugin packages, but it still
refuses to start.
