Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic I have Pinnacle PCTV Studio/Rave tunerja (card=39). Under Ubuntu 8.04 I had in V /etc/rc.local: rmmod bt878 rmmod bttv modprobe bt878 I was using kdetv, and TV tuner was working fine. However, after upgrade to 8.10 (kernel is 2.6.27-8-generic and 2.6.27-10-generic), TV card is not working anymore. When I start kdetv, I got this error: Unable to grab video. Video display is not possible with the current plugin configuration. Try playing with the configuration options of the V4L. Is there a problem with some kernel driver? Ah, that revealed something more interesting:

So apparently /lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper isn't executable
for the user "messagebus". That' s a bit weird, since in comment 3 the
actual program permissions are correct, and since (I presume) you ran
"ls" as normal user the directory permissions should be okay, too.
However, please check/give me the output of
ls -ld /lib
ls -ld /lib/dbus-1.0
They should both be drwxr-xr-x root:root. Also, please try to manually
run it as user messagebus:
sudo -u messagebus /lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
What's the output?
Let's also check integrity of the binary:
(cd /; md5sum -c /var/lib/dpkg/info/dbus.md5sums )
Any line which doesn't say "Ok"?
Finally, do you get anything interesting in dmesg if you do this? If you
aren't sure, and it's just technobabble to you, please attach
/var/log/kern.log after those tests.

I noticed this only happens with the visual effects switched on, whenever i turn them off the flashing stops. I dont know if this will help but thats just waht i have noticed. i am running ubuntu 8.10 on a hp tx2525nr.
