2008-12-03 Thread Arnaud Dessein
Hi Chris,

You are perfectly right : I do not know why but Assistive Technologies
was enabled (I have maybe tried to make my computer speak and forgot to
disable the option after !).

Now I have disabled Assistive Technologies, everything works fine.

If my report is a duplicate of yours, you are welcome to put it back as
a duplicate.

Thank you for your help.

I would not know about 9.04. That's not a final release. That's not to
say that I don't run the development releases, but I jumped into
Intrepid before it was done and have been regretting it ever since so
I'm not so eager to jump into Jaunty.

TBH I don't really use tracker. I use beagle instead. Not even sure

[Bug 304799] Re: Non-existing Hangul Hanja key presses generated in X

2008-12-03 Thread Michal Krause
** Description changed:

Ubuntu version: Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex (both i386 and amd64 editions)

After upgrading from Hardy, something in system keeps generating virtual
repetitious presses of key Hangul Hanja (which doesn't exists in us or
cz_qwerty keyboard layouts I use, as far as I know). It doesn't generate
any visible characters (in text input fields for example), but it
assigns as hotkey to menu items in GTK applications (Gimp, Evince ...)
which is very annoying: moving mouse cursor over menu completely removes
all hotkeys assigned to menu items before and the last one keeps Hangul
Hanja hotkey and virtual key presses calls it repeatably which can open
hundreds of dialogs in some cases. Hangul Hanja key presses are reported
  by xev too.

When it happens, it seems that opening of a new window stops it
temporarily, but it returns. It _probably_ may cause another keyboard
related problems which I noticed too:

  1) sometimes when I hold some key, it stops repeating after a few
characters (it seems not to be related to bug #264196 because it doesn't
affect arrow keys only and kbdrate workaround doesn't help)

  2) sometimes when I scroll up in xfce4-terminal it keeps returning back
  to bottom

I believe both subproblems can be caused by virtual presses of key
  Hangul Hanja.

[Bug 304814] [NEW] NumLock enabling on laptop with external keyboard in X

2008-12-03 Thread Michal Krause
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex (both i386 and amd64 editions)

I have external keyboard attached to laptop. In Hardy enabling NumLock
on external keyboard enabled it on laptop's keyboard too (and vice
versa). In Intrepid it seems that NumLock can be enabled separately on
both keyboards, but its behavior is a little strange.

If I start X with NumLock disabled on both keyboards and then I enable
it on external keyboard, its numpad keeps do cursor movement, PgUp,
PgDown etc. If I enable NumLock on laptop too, numpad on external
keyboard starts to write numbers. Then if I disable NumLock on laptop,
numpad on external keyboard starts to do cursor movement etc. again.
Then if I disable NumLock on external keyboard (so both NumLocks are
off!), its numpad starts to write numbers again.

This is strange behaviour, but most annoying is fact that I have to
enable NumLock on both external and laptop's keyboard after login to X
to make external keyboard's numpad to write numbers.

Update: I forgot to say that laptop is Dell Inspiron 1525 and external
keyboard is connected via USB.

[Bug 282012] Re: ufraw-batch consumes 100% cpu and crashes with signal 24 in cmsTrilinearInterp16()

2008-12-03 Thread LarryGrover
My camera is a Nikon D40.

Yes, I'm pretty sure ufraw-batch is creating thumbnails, but it's doing
it very inefficiently. If I try to copy 100's of files from an SD card
to the hard drive, the system becomes non-responsive until something
crashes or the indexing/thumbnailing finishes. This can take a long
time (many minutes), and it shouldn't happen.

Maybe it would help if trackerd launched ufraw-batch with a very low
priority?

Note that the refresh rate (85) is still not picked up from xorg.conf

[Bug 136549] Re: Powertop makes wrong suggestion to add usbcore.autosuspend=1

2008-12-03 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
I did a little research to find the actual cause of the problem.

There's actually two issues here:

1) powertop suggests to add the usbcore.autosuspend=1 kernel parameter, but
we're shipping usbcore as a module (solution described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powertop/+bug/136549/comments/16)
this is a confirmed issue, and should be fixed

2) to decide whether to make this suggestion, powertop checks two things:
  a) that /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend =0
  b) that /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/level != “on”
I have found that in my machine the usb root hubs have power level = auto,
but slave devices (usb mouse, usb storage) have power lever = on. this causes
powertop to make this suggestion.
I am not sure whether powertop is right on this one (i.e. whether the power
levels should be auto) or whether the current situation is correct, and
powertop should change...

[Bug 304817] [NEW] No connection with dynamic ip in double boot

2008-12-03 Thread Primoz
Public bug reported:

I had a problem with my network for quite a long time. So I decided to call my
ISP provider and ask if they know what's the problem.
They told me that this supposed to be a common problem when double booting. And
the only way to repair it is to change dynamic IP to static.
But the thing is that in Windows if there is no IP (connection) you can just
plug out and back in, while if I do the same action in Kubuntu nothing changes.
The problem lies in that, that Kubuntu demands a new IP but the computer
already has a IP which was demanded by Windows.
But I have no idea, why things work in Windows, as they were installed after
Linux.
Hope this changes in future.

[Bug 304800] Re: Failed to install VMWaretools package in vmware`d ubuntu

2008-12-03 Thread IPv6
Thanks for quick reply!
i found them through apt-cache search wmvare, file is in attachment. I didn`t
know they must not be used together :(
The problem rised from the fact that vmware tools from wmvare itself (i`m using
VMWare 6.0.5 on Windows XP to run Ubuntu for my work) can not properly
installed, that is why i started to look at apt-get:
- i did alien on deb packages that provided with WMVare, with and without
--script option. All i managed to get is normal mouse (not locked by wmvare
window). But cross- clipboard and other wmwaretools features are not working
anymore
- i tried to install vmware tool (from converted deb package by VMWare) as root
user in special text mode, from before even login (no gui/ubuntu at all). don`t
remeber how it is calling properly. after big chunk of
installations/recompilations system dropped into core dump and stalled, didnot
finished installation... no luck, in other words
- i merely a casual user for now :) so sorry if i trying something stupid - not
intentionally

The problem with VMWare tools started after the last big update on
ubuntu (kernel version change). Before that i successfully used them -
at least cross-system-clipboard worked fine too

Thanks!

[Bug 212617] Re: [needs-packaging] octave3.0-forge

2008-12-03 Thread Rebecca Palmer
Ubuntu 8.10 has most of the individual Octave-Forge main packages (as
octave-[name]), plus octave-ad, octave-nan, and octave-tsa from Octave-
Forge extra.

The missing ones from Octave-Forge main are ANN, benchmark, database,
nnet, special-matrix and video; ANN is a binding for a library itself
not in Ubuntu, the others have no obvious reason they could not be
packaged but I do not know how useful they would be.

An octave-forge empty package depending on all the individual ones could
be created as a convenient way to install them all, but I do not know
whether enough people use several of them to make this worth it, and
installing them individually is now the standard when obtained from
Octave-Forge.

[Bug 304787] Re: not able to update

2008-12-03 Thread goto
Hello, thanks for helping to make Ubuntu better.
You seem to use a mirror, that this file should mirror. In fact though this
file is from that mirror not available. Could you try changing your mirror and
try again? If you don't know how to change your mirror, feel free to ask.
Thanks.

[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)

2008-12-03 Thread Oliver Twist
I just want to thank you for this fix, as now I am able to really enjoy my
Philips Freevents without windoze!
In fact the alternate CD installation works after adding sdhci.blacklist=yes
and sdhci_pci.blacklist=yes before the installation. Didn't work from the
first try though (typo mistake maybe...).

Hope I'm not writting on a wrong bug report, but as I found the solution
here, wanted to thank people who helped me!

Re: [Bug 297543] Re: Update Package: nVidia 180.06

2008-12-03 Thread Joe_Bishop
It's not a reason - you always can roll back to the older driver in this
case ;)

2008/12/3 Vadim Peretokin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The reason why I'm against them is because I had stability issues - screen
would sometimes flicker and whole computer just pause. However I installed
the driver via nvidia's own installer - so I'm waiting for a package to be
available in ubuntu for testing first.

[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down

2008-12-03 Thread Trond Thorbjørnsen
No, I'm sorry - I was a bit short here.

The main issue is a problem for me (see further up the thread).

I was addressing Morten Minke's problem:
I do not want to mix bugs here, but I think I have an issue which might be
related to this one because of the powerplug in/out trick which also makes the
boot continue. Apparently something is triggered by this action.

The main issue has two different workarounds for me:

1. Attach the power cord during boot
2. Add nolapic in kernel options

(acpi=noirq didn't work last time I tried)

[Bug 299661] Re: Transmission tray icon no longer enabled by default

2008-12-03 Thread LumpyCustard
I would, but after looking at other programs, it seems that this happens
with a few others also. Most, however, do not update at all, even when
the mouse is moved around the icon.

With regards to this bug, could we please close it as it seems to be not
a bug by definition? Cheers.

Hi,

this ceased to be an issue since the USB stick got corrupted and would
not longer boot.

A completely new installation permitted sun-java-6.11 to be installed.

My problem now is that network IP and DNS setting are not persistent to
the USB stick.

[Bug 293259] Re: Some gspca Webcams not detected in ubuntu 8.10 and Kernel 2.6.27 anymore (for which in 8.04 an alternative driver had to be blacklisted)

2008-12-03 Thread Michael Jones
@Gustavo Please don't blame the Ubuntu folks for this. The gspca
drivers were merged into the kernel tree with version 2.6.27 (which is
in Intrepid), and it seems to be causing a lot of problems. None of my
webcams work now either on my main system, which runs on Arch Linux.
It's not just limited to Ubuntu.

I can't speak for the other drivers, but gspca is pretty messed up right
now.
