[Bug 217789] Re: Realtek ALC888 low sound

2008-12-20 Thread Colin
After intense amounts of experimentation (and googling) I found a post
which suggested that this was related to pulseaudio (and that their
removal of it fixed a similar problem.) Since half my system depends on
pulseaudio, its not easily removable but I see that others simply killed
it and removed the reference to it from /etc/asound.conf

Turns out I didn't do either, but rather just used "alsamixer -c 0" and
two of the sliders were set real low (despite the Pulseaudio volume
control being maxed on every channel. I cranked those up, and all of a
sudden my speakers have life :)

Yes, I'm a bit red-faced, but maybe this will help somebody else with a
simple fix. I don't remember seeing those channels in the console-based
alsamixer before, so its possible that Peter's fix enabled me to see
those?

Thanks to all!

[Bug 306016] Re: nfs client broken since 2.6.28-2-generic upgrade

2008-12-20 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Peter,

Bug 308537 is solely about an install problem where both Thomas and I
encountered errors when simply installing nfs-common on Jaunty. I
agree with you that I don't see any reason why NTFS would have any
effect on NFS, and my volumes are either ext3 or xfs.

Thomas, what mount command(s) are you using? I have tried:

  mount -t nfs host:/path /mount-point
  mount -t nfs -o nolock host:/path /mount-point
  mount -t nfs4 host:/path /mount-point

Only the middle one works.

[Bug 309920] Re: nVidia Version 96 not working & unable to use compiz after restart (Ubuntu 8.10)

2008-12-20 Thread FredBezies
Not a bug. As seen in release notes :

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810#nVidia%20%22legacy%22%20video%20support

"nVidia "legacy" video support

The 71 and 96 series of proprietary nVidia drivers, as provided by the
nvidia-glx-legacy and nvidia-glx packages in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, are not
compatible with the X.Org included in Ubuntu 8.10. Users with the nVidia
TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4 chipsets
are affected and will be transitioned on upgrade to the free nv driver
instead. This driver does not support 3D acceleration.

Users of other nVidia chipsets that are supported by the 173 or 177
driver series will be transitioned to the nvidia-glx-173 or nvidia-
glx-177 package instead. However, unlike drivers 96 and 71, drivers 173
and 177 are only compatible with CPUs that support SSE (e.g. Intel
Pentium III, AMD Athlon XP or higher). Systems with older CPUs will also
be transitioned to the nv driver on upgrade. "

Hi,

I'm having the same problem especially with processing (I'm running
ubuntu 8.10 and sun-java6), eclipse runs fine, I didn't try any java
applets yet, but this is kinda driving me mad cause the main tool I work
with is processing

I also tried installing sun-java5-jdk and jre but no luck, and on my
desktop which is runnig 8.0.4 installing the jdk solved the problem,

Is there any workaround to get this working properly?
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

[Bug 308537] Re: package nfs-common 1:1.1.4-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-12-20 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Thomas,

I didn't have to do any of that. As you recall, nfs-common would not
properly configure, despite multiple attempts. Then last night when I
installed something else, all of a sudden, nfs-commons configured.
Looking at the dpkg.log, I don't see anything that explains the change,
but it dpkg --configure finally succeeded. At this point, my best guess
is that it might have required a reboot, because nothing else was
installed and/or configured that explains the change. If you think on
the past day, does this match what you experienced?

[Bug 309864] Re: Shiny Switcher applet, drawing problem during animation and virtual desktop/workspace change

2008-12-20 Thread glennric
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 273326 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/273326

I agree that the transitory artifact issue is a different bug than the
persistent artifact issue with certain NVidia drivers. I have been
saying that all along (look back at my previous comments in bug #
273326). However, I seriously believe that a fix in the awn transitory
artifact bug will mitigate the NVidia persistent artifact issue at least
for these artifacts. I fail to see how a non-existent artifact can
persist.

I know that there are other artifacts that are also persistent with
these NVidia drivers, but they do not occur as often, nor are they as
annoying. These transitory artifacts are occurring on a computer with
an Intel video card and a slower processor, and they are extremely
annoying on that computer. Although they are not persistent they do
take several seconds to disappear due to the slower processor. They are
just plain ugly.

If the fix for these transitory artifacts is understood, then why is it
not incorporated into the latest bzr code? Or is that what is being
worked on in the trunk-rewrite-and-random-breakage branch?

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy][Intrepid] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-12-20 Thread Jim Louvau
This is turning into a genuine fiasco. I'm very aware that most work on
Linux is on a volontary basis but upstream's arrogance and attitude,
quite frankly, sucks. Look, if the driver is a rt2xxx "generic", "catch
all", then the damn thing should work with rt2400 and rt2500 chipsets.
If he doesn't want to back port (wait, isn't your crap supposed to work
with 45 & 25? What's "back" about it?) then the driver name should be
changed to rt 26* or rt28* or whatever since it IS NOT GENERIC TO ALL
RT2xxx chipsets! Furthermore, as was stated above, sine it doesn't work
and isn't generic to the family any more, then the legacy drivers should
be reinstated.

So, exactly where is the issue and why have we gone 3 versions without
support for a very common and popular wireless chipset? Three versions
and hundreds of broken laptops later we're still discussing this? The
driver is NOT generic to the whole chipset series. The driver IS broken.
The author refuses to make his generic driver generic any more. Rename
the damn thing, reinstate the legacy drivers and move on.

Sorry, but all this pussy footing around and breakage for hundreds of
users over one asshole's arrogance and everybody's refusal to call him
the elitist prick that he is or just ignore him is beyond frustrating.

Thank you.

[Bug 204502] Re: [hardy] keyboard stops responding after adjusting screen brightness

2008-12-20 Thread ajee
I confirm that on Dell 630, Ubuntu 8.10 and also seen in 9.04, keyboard
doesn't work if I press fn+arrow(no matter up or down), and never comes
back again even if I press fn+up(down) again.

Also, if I don't have power adapter plugged and bootup ubuntu, the
keyboard becomes slow and cursor sticks after I login for quite a long
time.

[Bug 284506] Re: rdiff-backup crashed with IOError in reval()

2008-12-20 Thread owsla
To me, this looks like an rdiff-backup process started just as a second
one was finishing. The second one had left its Process ID marker in the
repository, the first one was aware of the marker and about to read it,
and then the second one finished and deleted the marker.

Given that the bug hasn't affected Henrik, I figure it can be closed.
I'll see what I can do to detect the race condition in the future.

Re: [Bug 307951] Re: compiz is seriously messed up on thinkpad r61i

2008-12-20 Thread Robert Persson
I installed the testing version from the ppa using apt, but found that
it made no difference to Planet Penguin Racer.

I also found that googleearth now crashes a few seconds into launching.
This happens even with compositing disabled in xorg.conf, but it is
still clear from what I see in those few seconds that it looks OK when
compositing is disabled, but is a dog's breakfast when it is enabled.

I am attaching the output of the crash bundled with google's own
automatically generated report.

Extreme Tux Racer appears to have other problems so it probably won't
help us much.

[Bug 262004] Re: crashed on opening Firefox

2008-12-20 Thread owsla
This bug is due to the space at the end of the directory name: "LBS ".
FAT32 on Linux no longer supports filenames with spaces or periods at
the end because the kernel was changed to comply with the same
restrictions as Windows imposes.

Rdiff-backup version 1.2.3 (forthcoming) will escape trailing spaces or
periods on FAT32. CVS fix committed on Nov. 13, 2008; sorry for the
delay. Unfortunately, this issue was only first reported in a public
forum (rdiff-backup-users mailing list) in early November.

[Bug 308300] Re: kernel panics when using mouse in Firefox

2008-12-20 Thread 2CV67
For information:

I just installed Opera browser (some people suggested it was more
stable).

I booted kernel 2.6.24-21 (without backports) & opened only Opera.
In less than 5 minutes of intensive browsing (Google News pages) I got the
usual kernel panic.

So I guess the title of this bug report is probably misleading.
Sorry for that!

[Bug 309977] [NEW] Postscript filter should be included by default

2008-12-20 Thread Jesse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

Tracker comes with a handful of filters, some of which even using
programs not installed (which is actually fine for most users).
Postscript is as popular as PDF, so its filter should be included by
default.

I wrote a simple filter using ps2txt after discovering that none of my
postscript files appeared in the search results, which is already 3
months after enabling tracker. I wish this wouldn't happen to future
users

[Bug 309978] [NEW] package update-manager 1:0.93.34 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-12-20 Thread Chris Boyle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Automatic bugreport from the upgrade tool (hardy -> intrepid). Nothing
particularly unusual about this box (runs MythTV etc., it's a media
server). The only unusual action I took during upgrade was on a
different package (Samba): I chose to attempt a 3-way merge on smb.conf,
which failed immediately (postinst exited 1). I was notified that both
that package and update-manager failed to install/upgrade.
