[Bug 309549] Re: Please merge classpath 2:0.97.2-1.1 (universe) from Debian unstable

2008-12-28 Thread Manny Vindiola
>Firstly, I don't see a difference in the XB-Npp-MimeType lines
>that show up in the diff, am I missing something, or is it just whitespace?

There was a trailing space, I have removed it.

>Also, Fabien's patch to handle chdir errors appears to leak file descriptors,
I don't think it does but I could of course be wrong.
The code in cpproc.c near the patch looks like this:
...
 close_all_fds(local_fds, pipe_count * 2);

 chdir(wd);
...

from what I understand the line right before chdir(wd) closes the open file
descriptors but maybe I am missing something?
I will submittodebian when it is accepted.

I have a question I have had a hard time finding an answer to:
When should one choose among: iceape-dev, seamonkey-dev, libxul-dev,
xulrunner-1.9-dev ?
I have asked a few times on irc but never received a response. It seams that
the iceape-dev comments suggest using seamonkey-dev instead, seamonkey-dev
suggest using libxul-dev instead and I read something from debian that said not
to use libxul-dev but to prefer xulrunner-dev. That message is here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/05/msg9.html

[Bug 261802] Re: Permanent Alt-Gr (right Alt) pressed

2008-12-28 Thread Andres Mujica
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in xkeyboard-config.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 312017] [NEW] [Intrepid] X server crash (in libexa?), Intel 915GM, no compiz

2008-12-28 Thread Andrew Bennetts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

X just crashed for the first time in a long time. I didn't do anything
out of the ordinary; I was browsing the web with epiphany. It seemed
that the crash was triggered by switching between tabs with Ctrl+PgDn
while viewing pages on www.cricinfo.com. No OpenGL (from compiz or
anything else) or flash animations/videos were involved that I know of.

The screen was corrupted (mostly black, some vertical dotted lines, and
a static mouse cursor), and gdm was unable to fully restart X, leaving
me with a corrupted screen (when gdm gave up the there was no change to
the corruption or the position of the mouse cursor, but the mouse cursor
had changed from a pointer to a frozen "busy" wheel). I had to hit
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot to get a usable display back.

I'll attach the full Xorg.log, but for convenience here's the backtrace
from that log:

[Bug 254326] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU #1 stuck for 11s -- Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel 2.6.24-19

2008-12-28 Thread Florian Jensen
Hi,

I have a D945GCLF2 with Ubuntu 8.10.

I had fan control enabled too, and it led to freezes when load was high.
I have now disabled automatic fan control and I'll see how it goes.
Anyway, here's my syslog attached.

[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down

2008-12-28 Thread ArangeL
I can confirm that this BUG was fixed in "2.6.28-4", that was uploaded
to Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty" Alpha 2.

¡PLEASE!, "Ubuntu Kernel Team", add this kernel in to Ubuntu 8.10
"Intrepid" too. I like to boot, again, like 8.04, without any problems
:-).

Thanks.

2008-12-28 Thread Victor Bielawski
Firefox reverts to the default GTK back and forward buttons if the icon theme
does not explicitly define LTR and RTL versions of the icons.
The New Tab and New Window icons never use the current theme; they are compiled
into Firefox.

Seems to work fine for many, as there are no other bug reports.

I did remove it and mention this, as there are reports around about
resume failures when using the nvidia proprietary driver (especially
180.* series ..) and I wanted to be sure it's not the reason.

[Bug 312015] [NEW] fontforge should associate .sfd files with itself

2008-12-28 Thread Thomas Thurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fontforge

.sfd is the native file format of fontforge. When it's installed,
fontforge should associate .sfd files with itself so that double-
clicking one in Nautilus loads it into fontforge. Instead, they are
treated identically to plain text files.

I'm running the version in intrepid.

Re: [Bug 49358] Re: the layout ca(multix) is broken

2008-12-28 Thread Paul Anderson
Hi Sergey.

It seems OK, all the 'interpret' info is there - see the out.kbd below.

The only slightly odd thing is that some of the later ISO_Level5_ lines
come after a lot of other stuff, but the order of the dump probably
doesn't match the includes in compat/complete.

So the ISO_Level5_Shift keysym event somehow isn't being processed for
compat interprets? The config seems to be read in OK though.

Note that that I remapped Level3_Shift to set level 5, as I said in the
bug report, it's not any weirdness.

[Bug 218788] Re: nautilus refuses to mount a partition after manually setting new mount point

2008-12-28 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Sebastien, I don't see why this doesn't apply to Nautilus. tommy's items
(b) and (c) both describe Nautilus behaviours.

If Nautilus...
 * prevented the user from entering incorrect options OR
 * gave the user guidelines e.g. like Alex's comment above OR
 * allowed the user to unset incorrect options (s)he previously entered OR
 * displayed help text (pressing the Help button on the Properties > Volume
dialog tab) that described tommy's gconf-editor fix (thanks!)
...then I would agree the problem was entirely with gnome-mount. As it stands
Nautilus does none of these things, encouraging user error.

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics

2008-12-28 Thread Thunderbird
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop with Nvidia 8 vga card:

There is no way to control backlight brightness on Sony Vaios with 8-series
adapters, e.g.
  nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS
nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

The registers have been found (kudos to mikes!) and incorporated into
nvclock, which you can check out by anonymous cvs and install:

  ]$ sudo apt-get install cvs
  ]$ cvs -d:pserver:anonym...@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock login
  ]$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonym...@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock
co -P nvclock
  ]$ cd nvclock
  ]$ ./autogen.sh
  ]$ ./configure
  ]$ make
  ]$ sudo make install

To test, make sure you are using nVidia's proprietary driver, then:
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 100
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 15
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S +10

So far mikes' registers have been found to work on:

+ HP/Compaq laptops
+ {
+ 8510W (Quadro FX 570M, MXM)
+ 8710P (Quadro NVS 320M, MXM)
+ }
+
+ Samsung laptops:
+ {
+ Q210 (Geforce 9200M)
+ Q310 (Geforce 9200M)
+ R510 (Geforce 9200M)
+ }
+
+ Sony laptops:
+ {
  8400M GS:
  VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B, SZ71E

  8400M GT:
  VGN FZ38M, FZ31M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE, FZ21E, FZ21M,
FZ470E, FZ340E, FZ190N, FZ18M, FZ31E, FZ18E, NR21Z, NR38S

  8600M GS:
  VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z, FZ31S

  8600M GT:
  VGN AR51SU, AR71S
+ }
+
+ Zepto
+ {
+ Geforce 9600GT based laptops using MXM cards
+ }

Add your model to the list by clicking on the "Update description /
tags" link, NOT by asking in a bug comment for someone else to do it.

To get hotkeys to work, follow the instructions in this comment:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/75
or install the package at :
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/111

Dual-adapter models (SZ6 among others) can get backlight control with
the Intel adapter using xbacklight, and can get hotkey functionality as
  per bug #173652.

[Bug 311544] Re: segfault during X startup with savage driver

2008-12-28 Thread knarf
OK, recompiled without optimizations but it still crashes. This time
config is initialized incorrectly:

(gdb) p config
$9 = (xf86CrtcConfigPtr) 0x11
(gdb) p *config
Cannot access memory at address 0x11

config is derived from ((xf86CrtcConfigPtr)
((p)->privates[xf86CrtcConfigPrivateIndex].ptr))

The value of xf86CrtcConfigPrivateIndex is... -1:

(gdb) p xf86CrtcConfigPrivateIndex
$27 = -1

This value gets initialized to -1 in xf86Crtc.c:57 and gets updated in
xf86Crtc.c:xf86CrtcConfigInit(). This function does not seem to be
called before the crash occurs as it crashes before a breakpoint set on
this function gets triggered. This leaves xf86CrtcConfigPrivateIndex set
to -1 and with that config is undefined...

Your Welcome Patrick. I would really like to be able to print pictures
that I take with my digital camera in Ubuntu Linux. I am currently
living in the Philippines and plan to leave this computer and printer to
my daughter when I move back to the US in March-April time frame and I
will buy a new system there. I am not sure where you are located, but
it seems to me that I am always 6 to 8 time zones away from everybody
and this makes it seem that I am slow to respond. Again thanks for the
help and if you want me to run any other type or size of paper, let me
know and I will send you the results with at error log.

[Bug 186390] Re: gnome-power-manager's handling of "critically low" battery power could be more user-friendly

2008-12-28 Thread pruch
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 135548 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135548

I'm using ubuntu 8.10 and I did this to solve the problem:

On Configuration Editor (gconf-editor)
I've set the followed keys:
/apps/gnome-power-manager/general/use_time_for_policy (false)
/apps/gnome-power-manager/thresholds/percentage_low (15)
/apps/gnome-power-manager/thresholds/percentage_critical (12)
/apps/gnome-power-manager/thresholds/percentage_action (10)
/apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/critical_battery (hibernate)

This means that when my battery reaches 15% GPM will show a "low battery
warning", at 12% it will show a "Critical battery warning" and at 10% it
will put my system to hibernate. I have a li-ion battery and use 10% to
prevent damage to it.

I think that there should be a way to set these values directly on GPM,
not just via gconf-editor

Do you see the correct 'compat' part if you save your xkb configuration using
"xkbcomp :0 -xkb out.xkb" - in the resulting out.xkb file?

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-12-28 Thread Alexey Borzenkov
Hanno, I don't really remember, but I think back when I was
investigating problems with my Samsung drive I found that iotop didn't
show all the interesting values and was patching it to be more precise.
Also, please be aware, that querying smart will always unpark drive
heads, because smart values (I think) have to be read from special
sectors on your drive. The same goes for ANY hard drive temperature
monitoring (because they ALL have to query smart to get drive
temperature), so remove hddtemp if you have it installed.

If you want your drive to stay parked longer try enabling laptop-mode
(look at /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf for details and don't forget
to set ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true in /etc/default/acpi-support). What you
must be interested in is *_MAX_LOST_WORK_SECONDS, but it will work on AC
only when you have ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC=1. You might, just like me,
find it a lot better for your drive to stay spinned down than to have it
constantly working with disabled APM.

[Bug 235135] Re: [MASTER] Please backport flashplugin-nonfree version 10 beta and asound-plugins from Intrepid so we can drop libflashsupport and the crashes it causes

2008-12-28 Thread Wolf G. Eggers

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and tried to install "flashplugin-nonfree".
The Adobe Flash 9 download aborted with an http 404 error. Seems like Adobe
removed Flash 9 in from it's download servers. (Does this mean there's no
Adobe Flash support in 8.04 LTS at the moment?)

[Bug 311998] Re: suspend2ram: resume fails in 2.6.27

2008-12-28 Thread Noel J. Bergman
It has been a little while since I booted Intrepid, so I can go check it
later. It was working fine the last time I checked.

To clarify a point you made ...

> I tried this also from recovery mode with nvidia and ehci_hcd module
unloaded

Which nvidia driver were and are you using? If you came up using one of
the Open Source drivers, please be aware that the open source drivers do
not support suspend & resume. Unfortunately, they allow you to suspend,
and just can't resume. So you need a real driver. And from time to
time, those break, too. The 180.* series is broken as best I can tell,
although Daniel T. Chen reports having it working for him, personally.
For the rest of us, 177.82 is probably the best driver to use at this
time.

[Bug 286846] Re: harddrive spins down when it shouldn't in laptop-mode

2008-12-28 Thread krlhc8
I've attached the second round of results.

Looking at the pstree files, laptop-mode-tools uses hdparm -B 128 and
hdparm -S 12 to set the power management settings of the harddrive. The
128 value for hdparm -B should override any hdparm -S value and disable
spindown (perhaps just keep an hdparm -S value of 0 according to the man
page). According to the man page for hdparm, hdparm -B 1 through 127
allow spindown while hdparm -B 128 through 254 disable spindown, so I
would expect that no matter what -S value is sent, hdparm should
disregard it, which is currently not the case.

[Bug 242067] Re: Gadmin-proftpd don't start testing Ubuntu intrepid 64-bit

Actually, this is off-topic, but here are some pointers.

It's extremely easy.

If you have downloaded a .deb file, all you have to do is double click
it and follow the on-screen instructions (you will need your admin
password during the process).

Check the following link for more specific instructions.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-12-28 Thread Karl Tomlinson
I suggest that the best fix is to modify the system fontconfig settings, so
that they become defaults rather than always overriding settings already
present in the pattern.

This would include changing 10-no-sub-pixel.conf from

none

to

 unknown
none

and changing 10-hinting-medium.conf from

hintmedium

to something like

-1
hintmedium

There are other files that should also be changed similarly.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

In reply to comment 45:

> Mikael: xterm is not a GNOME program,

True, but ...

> therefore I'm not surprised it doesn't follow the GNOME font rendering
> settings.

... last I checked, GNOME settings cause Xft X server resource database
properties to be set, and so should have an effect on xterm behavior unless
overridden by fontconfig settings.

The bug here is that system fontconfig settings are always overriding settings
from Xft X resources.

The upstream bug is https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17722, but
upstream fontconfig does not install these problem files by default.

The problem only appears when the distribution installs the 10-* links in
/etc/fonts/conf.d/.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
terminal/+bug/190848/comments/40

> vte uses xft for font backend, while others uses pango.

Yes, and Pango uses cairo.

The problem does not appear with cairo, because fontconfig settings sometimes
do not get respected in cairo due to

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11838

which causes other problems, reported in bug 200707, bug 209256, and bug
293643.

> This may be a bug of xft, which doesn't follow xsetting.

libXft was the original library that effectively defines the interaction of
fontconfig and Xft X resource settings. IMO it is a bug that cairo does not
emulate this behavior consistently.
