I've tried to reproduce your issue using Ubuntu 8.10 but update-manager
worked as expected! I clicked the orange icon of update-manager and let

Does anybody else can confirm this issue?

[Bug 292912] Re: Screen flickers as though it has the wrong refresh rate for a few seconds

2009-02-05 Thread Don Wilson
I have the same problem with my laptop which has the same chipset. When
Gnome starts up there are also horizontal lines flashing across the
screen for a few seconds. The flickering also occurs when some
applications start. e.g. Totem and anything ran in Wine. I also did not
have this problem in any other version of Ubuntu and I do not have
compiz enabled. A friend of mine also recently upgraded to Intrepid on a
similar laptop and experienced exactly the same problem.

[Bug 325647] [NEW] Please SRU (or backport) gst-plugins-bad

2009-02-05 Thread HNT
Public bug reported:

Hi,

In the current intrepid version of gstreamer-plugin-bad (0.10.8) the DVD
support is completely broken. If you read the release notes, resindvd
was introduced in that version of the plugin set and it was in an
experimental state. So it's even not possible to read the dvd because
resindvd attempt to read the menu and faill.

If you read the change log for the version 0.10.9, you can see that
resindvd is getting stabilized. Indeed there is a ppa with latest
gstreamer packages and dvd menu browsing work greatly.

So we should really, either backport or make an SRU in order to allow
people to watch DVD in a decent way (remember, the default install is
built around totem-gstreamer so this is needed to be able to watch dvd).

Please also note that this version of gst-plugin-bad depends on libcelt
0.4 (which isn't in intrepid) and should also be backported BUT, libcelt
hasn't any reverse dependencies (so you won't break softwares by
uploading a new version of that package).

Kind regards,

[Bug 325631] Re: when choosing what to do with menu.lst while updating i did show 3 way differ and then Cancel

2009-02-05 Thread Hew McLachlan
Thanks for your report. Changing sourcepackage to debconf, which I hope
is correct.

I have had a similar experience to you in the past, where (from memory)
the options Cancel and Forward are presented at the diff. When the user
thinks I don't want to do this, they want to hit the back option, so
Cancel appears to be the most appropriate. It is not obvious that
Forward is how you go back, as it is reasonable to expect that the merge
action would be performed.

Only a single option should be available when viewing the diff. If the
user wishes to Do Nothing, they will select that option from the drop
down menu.

releases. Could someone test if this is still an issue in Intrepid and
Jaunty, or if it is Hardy specific? Which kernel do the PPA build
daemons run, as it would be really great to get this fixed there?

Happens also to me, very often on my EEE Pc, and sometimes on my Acer

lid it is easy to not notice the dialog and accidentally leave the
laptop running. Therefore it would be nice to have the shutdown anyway
as a permanent selection, or something. It would also be nice to find
out which program is causing this problem by failing to shut down, but
the dialog says only unknown program.

[Bug 150376] Re: can't browse arbitrary samba shares etc in dolphin

2009-02-05 Thread Peter
on a network with windows XP and vista machines sharing folders and an Ubuntu
samba server sharing folders they are not visible in dolphin from the remote
placessamba shares (nor are they visible in konqueror).
The workgroups are visible but dolphin reports a time out if I click a
workgroup.
if I enter smb://workgroup again there is a time out
if I enter smb://workgroup/hostname there is a timeout
if I enter smb://workgoup/ip there is a timeout
if I enter smb://ip the shared folders show up
coincidentally (or perhaps not coincidentally) the printer install wizard will
not detect shared windows printers but will install them if the ip is given and
they then work fine so maybe the problem is in the samba client not in dolphin
or konqueror
(is sort of goes without saying that the shared folders all show up on the
windows computers)

[Bug 262132] Re: Inkscape and Evolution windows jump when maximized

2009-02-05 Thread Patrick
** Description changed:

The Inkscape bug has already been reported here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/easytag/+bug/208079

But when using Compiz and running Evolution, if I open a new window (to
have, say, Email and Calendar at the same time), the same thing happens
  to Evolution.

To describe it in detail: When the window is maximized, if I click on
the menu-bar, the window will jump up and down. This make clicking
anything almost impossible, and the only way to unmaximize the window is
by holding Alt and drag the window with the mouse. When unmaximized,
  there is no jumping.

Before Hardy, I never experienced this bug.
+
+ I have the same problem. I am new to Linux and have a new Dell mini. My
+ obsservation is that the bottom of the window falls outside the frame
+ created by the top and bottom panels. Not sure if this is relevant. Also
+ icon the mouse thinks it is clicking on is not the one it is hovering

[Bug 187848] Re: volume control/mixer interface unusable

2009-02-05 Thread era
My concrete problem is that the front panel mic input doesn't seem to
work. While troubleshooting this, I have read enough to actually almost
understand the interface jumble that is the gnome-volume-control applet,
but nowhere near enough to understand whether the actual problem is
already reported.

In any event, I feel that one of the things which makes this
inordinately hard to sort out is that the g-v-c user interface hides
away relevant controls and displays irrelevant controls. If it were
better designed, I would not have to Google to find out which controls I
can ignore, and which ones I will need to enable in the Preferences so I
can twiddle them.

+ [jaunty] Please sync Kadu 0.6.5.1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Kadu is porting to Qt 4.4.

Yes. The proposed workaround on forum post on

The correct workaround is to disable a workaround :-)

Uncheck the checkbox located at:

Thanks for helping me nailing this one down !

[Bug 325662] [NEW] Transparency problems with xfdesktop

2009-02-05 Thread bsh
Public bug reported:

Hello

Firstly, I think I have reported this bug already with an earlier
version of ubuntu (7.04) but now i can't find it anymore. Probably it's
been deleted when the support for 7.04 ended, or maybe i'm just too
lame. Anyway, the reported bug doesn't sho up under my own bugreports
list.

Since then i am using 8.04.2 on different machines, but this bug still remains!
I installed 8.04.2 with default gnome, then installed the whole xfce4 from the
repository. (with all xfce goodies, xfce tools, artworks, even the
xubuntu-default-settings package)

The problem is, when i use the xfce desktop compositor (ie. i set the let xfce
manage your desktop), then windows become transparent when i move or resize
them, panels become transparent, and the xfce menu is transparent too, despite
every transparency slider is set to 0 (ie. no transparency)
The explicit options to set transparency of windows while moved or resized, the
transparency of panels etc, do not seem to have any effect. Windows are still
transparent.

I have seen this on all the machines i use, with completely different
hardware: nvidia video, intel video, ati video -- all the same.

[Bug 23220] Re: Closing lid should not turn off external LCD

2009-02-05 Thread Helmers
Works fine for me in Ubuntu 8.10 (although it's not the 'default'
behavior...)

I have set When laptop lid is closed = {Do nothing} in [ System
Preferences Power Management On AC Power ]. When I close the lid,
then my laptop monitor is turned off (and stays off) and the external
monitor is still active. Isn't that exactly the way it should work?

Who would ever want the laptop monitor to be active when the lid is
closed (regardless the settings in Power management) ?!

[Bug 325679] [NEW] oo calc - I cannot add a trend line y=Ax to a chart

2009-02-05 Thread Pyromik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I have a XY scatter chart, usually I draw a linear trend line, e.g., a
function y=Ax+B that minimizes the MSE error. Sometimes, the inner theory
implies that the term B must be equal to zero. In that case, we must force B=0
(and the trend line must pass through the point (0,0) ). When a trend line is
added in Excel, there is a check box in order to do that, but in openoffice
calc there is not nothing similar.
Thanks
PD: Excel has also a statistical analysis package. I have seen oostat, a set of
macros for openoffice with similar characteristic, but it does not work
properly.

Topik: [Bug 325604] Re: openoffice3 apearance a blank document when opening doc
file with table content

I just noticed that switching to web layout in Office 2007 also shows
the table. So I think this document is defective.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney
