[Bug 217607] Re: tomcat cannot connect to mysql
Ok I'm giving you all information I have. The application currently throwing this exception at me is ActiTime, a freeware (but not free) web-based time management application. The full error message is: Unable to instantiate logger class 'com.mysql.jdbc.log.Jdk14Logger', exception in constructor? Running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server edition on AMD 64 using the certified versions of tomcat5.5 and mysql. Versions are: Kernel 2.6.24-21-server Tomcat 5.5.25-5 Mysql 5.0.51a-3 Libmysql-Java 5.1.5 liblog4j1.2-java 1.2.15-2 (in /usr/share/java/) Sun Java (java-6-sun-1.6.0.07) The application requests to use Sun Java instead of the free gjc environment. So: the whole gjc environment is uninstalled (hopefully) and update-alternatives --config java only returns Sun Java 1.5 and 1.6. [Bug 217607] Re: tomcat cannot connect to mysql
Without more information (like a complete Java stack trace) it is difficult to debug where it may come from. Did you contact the ActiTime developers about it ? If they can translate their error into a bug into Ubuntu, that would be great. FWIW the class in that error message is in libmysql-java and support for JDBC4 was dropped between the gutsy and the hardy versions. [Bug 217607] Re: tomcat cannot connect to mysql
Thank you *very* much for that fast answer. I contacted the ActiTime developers. They're very helpful and would like me to turn off security completely and tell me what's happening. For two reasons I wouldn't like to do that: 1) I don't know how to do that 2) I don't want to do that because the docs (yeah I read the docs!!) explicitly warned doing this unless you know what you're doing. So I don't. See 1). So, they said it's very likely a permission problem. I grepped the logfile with grep -i permiss catalina* and it really gave some read permission denied. And it was related to logging. A config file /var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps/actitime/WEB-INF/classes/logging.properties was denied read access to, unfortunately there is no such file with that name. The full line was: Caused by: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission /var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps/actitime/WEB-INF/classes/logging.properties read) Here's the policy: grant codeBase file:/var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps/actitime/- { permission java.lang.RuntimePermission getClassLoader; permission java.util.PropertyPermission *, read, write; permission java.io.FilePermission ALL FILES, read; // Database access permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.org.apache.jasper.compiler; permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.org.apache.jasper.compiler.*; // Net access to Mysql permission java.net.SocketPermission 127.0.0.1:3306, connect, resolve; }; grant codeBase file:/var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps/actitime/WEB-INF/lib/* { permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessDeclaredMembers; permission java.lang.RuntimePermission getClassLoader; permission java.util.PropertyPermission *, read; }; For some reason I hoped that the line with ALL FILES and read would include permission to read files there. Even changing to read, write didn't help (in case the app wanted to actually create it's 'logging.properties' file). Oh and by the way, it works out of the box on my OpenSuSE test install at home :-( But you wanted a stack trace. Here's a stack trace attached. I have started the server, accessed the page with the error message once and shut down the server immediately so it should contain everything. ** Attachment added: Stack trace with permission error http://launchpadlibrarian.net/22047740/catalina.2009-02-06.log -- tomcat cannot connect to mysql https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217607 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-dfsg-5.0 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Hi Patrick Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance. I had to get something working sort of soon-ish at the time, since I was using it for something at work; without a way forward in sight I had to abandon using LDAP and use flat files instead. I did briefly see another bug on Launchpad which was about mod_ssl causing suspiciously similar sounding problems, so it might not be slapd as I was thinking. My setup was serving svn over an https connection, and using slapd for authentication. I had it working in a test on a single-processor machine, but on a multi Xeon processor server (an HP G-something, post-Compaq era, can't remember what) the problem happened. [Blueprint ldap-defaultdit-usergrp-mgmt] Default LDAP DIT for user and group managment
Blueprint changed by Hartmut Koptein: Whiteboard changed to: dendrobates: This is a good idea, but I would like to see a community discussion about DIT layout. i.e. the use of dc=example,dc=com, over o=example.com. I have almost always used dc, but not for any good reason. ru: having DIT in any form is very important for corporations. this feature can (in future) replace MS AD ecosystem. koptein: DIT and ldap means not (mail-, directory, or other) domains. dc=example,dc=com is for a domain, also o=example.com is a domain and both aren't very good for a bigger company structure. One example - for better clarification - i use .uk (or .de, nl, ...). If you start with dc=example,dc=uk and your company grow up with another location, say example.br, how can s/o layout this new structure. Same for o=example.uk and o= or ou= or c= ... example.br? Always a new DIT for a new location? The important thing is not the domain (whatever domain), is is the name of the structure, the comany. So for one of the best (L)DAP implementation (NDS or eDirectory) nearly everyone recomends an o=example -- without any com, org, net, uk, br, ... and other locations (or parts of an comypnay like sales, hr, stock, ...) are in the second level in the DIT, like ou=br. LDAP is not only for users and groups, what about computers, DNS, DHCP, Harddisk, Pools, Volumes (LVM), SoftwareRAID-Level, Rights, Clusterconfiguration, Loadbalancing, Routing, RIP, BGP, Applications and many more? RE: [Bug 226898] Re: Suggested Improvement for Title Text Display
Hi, This has been progressing as Bug 395668. Thanks, Dave Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 16:16:29 + From: martinmai1...@web.de To: davejake...@hotmail.com Subject: [Bug 226898] Re: Suggested Improvement for Title Text Display Since this is a feature request, you should file a bug about this on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/. Please search for similar requests before opening a new. Thanks in advance. ** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist ** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- Suggested Improvement for Title Text Display https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226898 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in “firefox-3.0” source package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 Suggested Improvement for Title Text Display During the transition from Firefox 2 to 3, the display of title text (as in: A href=URL title=page description) is no longer truncated, bringing Firefox into line with Internet Explorer. This is a most welcome addition. Thanks guys! The trouble is, Firefox now suffers the same problem that IE does: if the page author puts a large amount of text in the title string, the user doesn't have time to read it. The current title text display model works something like this: 1. User moves mouse pointer over object and then holds still; 2. After something less than one second of no pointer motion, the title text is displayed, wrapping if necessary; 3. A display timer is started; 4. Providing no event or pointer movement occurs, the text displays for a maximum of five seconds; 5. The displayed text disappears and redisplay is disabled; 6. When the pointer next moves, text redisplay is enabled, subject 2 above. From the end-user perspective, this translates as: 1. Move pointer over object, hold still, wait for title text to appear; 2. Read as much as you can before the five-second timer cuts in; 3. If you finished reading it, you're done! 4. If you didn't, move pointer slightly, hold still, wait for title text to reappear; 5. Quickly find where you left off reading previously and repeat as many times as needed from step 2. This can be a frustrating experience, so I'd like to suggest two possible display models by way of improvement. The first would be very simple to do, but still only an approximation of what should occur; the second is the proper way to do it: Alternative 1 - Instead of displaying the title text for a fixed time period of five seconds, display it for four seconds (say) plus some function of the title text length. Through experimentation, the display time could roughly match the time taken for a slow-to-average reader to read the title. For different languages, this would be an approximation. From the end-user perspective, this would translate exactly as above, but with greater likelihood of being able to read the title text first time through. Alternative 2 - With the existing model, text display is triggered by zero pointer motion for a fixed time period. Maintain this, but also use pointer movement as the event trigger to vanish the text, disabling redisplay until the pointer moves off the object (moving back over the object would re-enable display). From the end-user perspective, this would translate as: 1. Move pointer over object, hold still, wait for title text to appear; 2. Read as much of the title text as you want to (ah!); 3. Read something else, or if the title text is obscuring something, move the pointer slightly to make it disappear. The advantage of the latter is it puts the user back in control of his browsing experience -- just as it should be -- instead of the browser making arbitrary decisions on his behalf. Another advantage is that sometimes, after reading the title text, you don't actually want it to reappear. This solves that. From the user perspective, it would be simpler and rather intuitive too. Of the two suggested, I would greatly prefer and recommend the latter, but either would be an improvement over the current model and IE. Hope you can take this one up. So here is the thing: after uninstalling the package gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio totem and rhythmbox work fine without lags or freezes. As soon as I switch the wireless off or activate the internet connection everything works fine again (no restart of the app is needed).
