[Bug 326793] [NEW] droidbattles on CL does not work

2009-02-07 Thread Keith Worrell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: droidbattles

Droidbattles has a 'batch' mode that uses the -textmode switch acording to the
man page, but none of the options work.
'droidbattles -textmode' always produces Segmentation Fault.
droidbattles -textmode -check config.cfg always produces ERROR! for every line
of the config file.
droigbattles -textmode -assemble always produces "could not open file".

As far as I can tell, no option using the -textmode switch works at all.

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

2) apt-cache policy droidbattles
droidbattles:
  Installed: 1.0.6-6

  Version table:
 *** 1.0.6-6 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/universe Packages

3) The directions in the man pages are very clear.

4) Every command either produces an error or no output. However, all the
same "commands" work as expected in the GUI.

[Bug 326648] Re: [Kubuntu 9.04] gtk-qt-engine not working

2009-02-07 Thread Brice Arnould
Hello world !

Why not to rename the current package into gtk-qt-engine-base and to
provide a package gtk-qt-engine which would be empty and depend on both
gtk-qt-engine-base and libbonoboui ? This way people who installs
libbonoboui would get the right behavior and people who explicitly ask
for gtk-qt-engines too.

I would also like to suggest a hack... I do not know if it is feasible with
regards to Ubuntu's packaging standards.
The iso version of kubuntu-desktop would suggest gtk-qt-engine and recommend
gtk-qt-engine-base. A few days after the release, an update would recommend
gtk-qt-engine and do no other changes.
It's ugly but it might works.

Maybe the answer shouldn't be those hacks and maybe we should think
about a way to provide some trimed-down package on the CD. If people are
interested we could try to find way of doing this, but since I'm far
from being a apt guru and I know nothing of Ubuntu's policies, it's very
very unlikely that I could find suitable solution.

[Bug 326791] [NEW] External SATA drives do not auto-mount

2009-02-07 Thread Joel Ebel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: policykit

When I attach an external SATA drive to ubuntu, I get the following
error:

Failed to mount "460G Volume".
org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed
auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action,result).

Presumably this is because the disk is seen as an internal fixed disk,
but it's been hotplugged. I've guessed that this falls in the domain of
policykit, but not being too familiar with policykit, I don't have much
else to say. It's possible this is a known problem with no easy
solution, but I'd certainly like to encourage more thinking of the
issue, because drive enclosures with eSATA are fairly common, and the
user experience is inconvenient compared to USB.

[Bug 261721] Re: X never sees brightness key release events on Dell laptops

2009-02-07 Thread wolfie2x
2.6.27-11 fixed about 90% of the problem for me on Intrepid. (Dell
Inspiron 9400; Vendor Str="Dell Inc.". g-p-m 2.24.0-0ubuntu8.2; system
fully up-to-date)

The problem now is:
The OSD is displayed but progress bar increment/decrement is in small steps
(min brightness at 50% mark). If the progress bar is brought down to 0% mark,
brightness doesn't change there after at all (At this point progress bar will
move in larger steps though). Brightness works again after killing g-p-m and
starting again.

Looks like the kernel bug is fixed but there's still a g-p-m bug. Should
I update https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/304187, report a new bug or just continue here?

[Bug 314327] Re: Problem opening Gmail account

2009-02-07 Thread markor
I cannot reproduce bug on hardy 8.04.3/64bit with Seamonkey 1.1.12 an
1.1.13.

Consider that opening gmail in standard mode use a bit more bandwidth then in
html mode.
You can try to use Noscript extension to turn off Google scripts if you want to
enforce
automatic loading of basic html interface.

I think that this is actually not Seamonkey bug, but we need one more
confirmation
from someone using 32-bit Ubuntu.

[Bug 311497] Re: skype experiences lag with pulseaudio

2009-02-07 Thread dmuir
Changing your sound in to hw or plughw for Sound In (Skype options) may help
for skype-to-skype calls. The problem here is two fold, and is affected by
pulseaudio (in particular, its buggy ALSA plugin) as well as the network stack.
Skype uses two different audio encodings. One for skype-to-skype, and another
for skype-out. The former uses larger packets and works fine, while the latter
uses smaller packets, and the network stack is unable to handle it. So for me,
calling skype-to-skype works fine, but skype out still has major lag (sometimes
over 10 seconds).
There should be a new linux version of Skype out sometime soon... maybe...
crossing fingers... which is supposed to work better with pulseaudio. But if
I'm right about the network stack, then it might only solve issues with
skype-to-skype calls, and not skype-out calls.
Haven't tried pasuspender yet though. Will try that later today.

[Bug 192796] Re: BusyBox v1.1.3 starts instead of Ubuntu Hardy (db) Kernel 2.6.24-8-generic via update-manager -d -c Gusty2Hardy

2009-02-07 Thread cojon
Booting into the Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD works as expected and as the
document claims. However once grub is installed into / and the drive is
later formatted (as could be done for a clean reinstall), the Ubuntu
8.10 live CD will only boot into busybox. I suspect a modification to
the MBR as part of the difficulty, but every attempt to overwrite the
MBR and repair the problem has not been successful.

[Bug 326777] [NEW] flash content in seamonkey does not stop after tab is closed.

2009-02-07 Thread markor
Public bug reported:

Using Seamnkey 1.1.12 and 1.1.13 (1.1.14 is unavailable yet - Bug #315344 ) on
Xubuntu 8.04.2LTS/Hardy 64-bit.
Using newest Noscript extension with flash and javascript enabled for current
web page.
When user plays any Flash content on a web page opened in a browser tab (
youtube video, etc)
and then close that tab, content continue to play inside flash.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Seamonkey (with flash installed)
2. Open new tab (Ctrl+T) nad Go to page with flash (youtube.com) with
Seamonkey.
(Enable javascript and flash content if not enabled previously)
3. open any video or flash content (possibly one with audio)
4. While flash still active, close tab opened on that web page that uses flash
5. Flash continues to play even after closing web page tab (if audio present it
can be heard)

Desired behavior: Flash content inside web page should stop running when tab
for a web page is closed:
Actual behavior: Flash continues to play in the background, eve after page is
closed.

/Also there is huge memory usage in Seamonkey that grows over time and does not
drop down
/but it is unsure to me if that is due this bug cousing memory not released or
some wider Seamonkey bug.

[Bug 326778] [NEW] system beep can't be changed to screen flash in Jaunty due to missing sound preferences

2009-02-07 Thread Kazagistar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In previous releases, I was able to replace the system beep with a
screen flash, and I know many people who did this as well, because
otherwise using Ubuntu on a laptop in class or during speeches is a
nightmare. It is good to be alerted, but sound is often a bad method.

This functionality used to be under "System -> Preferences -> Sound",
but in my Jaunty Alpha 4 install, this is no longer available. The
volume control applet does not contain equivalent functionality, and
thus this should be considered a regression.

[Bug 326775] [NEW] unresponsive after starting to download a queue of podcasts

2009-02-07 Thread Book 'em Dano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
rhythmbox:
  Installed: 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.3

I started a queue of podcasts for Rhythmbox to download, and I expected
the program to proceed down the list to download all podcasts. But
after the first podcast was downloaded, Rhythmbox became unresponsive
and the gui interface turned a shade of gray.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2009-02-07 Thread Tom
People still see Ubuntu as something that's very difficult to get
working. Why not just let them stick with Windows which "just works"
and also with Windows isn't everything "plug & play" whereas in linux
its only for old equipment and you have to spend ages getting it to
work?

[Bug 326768] [NEW] mysql thinks it has crashed when it hasn't

2009-02-07 Thread Will Uther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

I'm running mythtv on jaunty with mysql-server-5.0 version
5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu5. During boot mysql starts, then mythtv
starts, then mysql restarts and mythtv gets confused.

What seems to be happening is that line 387 (or 389?) of
/usr/bin/mysqld_safe is falling through when it shouldn't. mysqld_safe
is a script that starts mysqld and restarts it if it crashes. Here are
some relevant syslog sections:

Feb 8 12:35:07 willvo mysqld_safe[3668]: started

'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' port: 3306 (Ubuntu)

Note that mysqld_safe is finds one mysqld process still running after it
is supposed to have crashed. mysqld_safe then kills that process and
starts another. This only seems to happen once during boot - it doesn't
keep restarting mysqld in normal use.

The problem is somewhat intermittent. I made it go away once before by
mysqlrepairing my tables, but they seem fine now. Debian bug 418648
looks somewhat similar but slightly different (and the fix they used
doesn't work for me).

My current fix is to replace:

$NOHUP_NICENESS $ledir/$MYSQLD $defaults --basedir=$MY_BASEDIR_VERSION --d
atadir=$DATADIR $USER_OPTION --pid-file=$pid_file --skip-external-locking 2>&1 |
 $ERR_LOGGER -t mysqld & wait

with:

$NOHUP_NICENESS $ledir/$MYSQLD $defaults --basedir=$MY_BASEDIR_VERSION --dat
adir=$DATADIR $USER_OPTION --pid-file=$pid_file --skip-external-locking 2>&1 | $
ERR_LOGGER -t mysqld

in the mysqld_safe script (the second line has " & wait" removed from
the end). This seems to fix the problem. I don't understand the
difference in semantics between " & wait" and normal process
termination.

[Bug 245942] Re: Cannot open a URL

2009-02-07 Thread Mercutio
I suffer from this bug too (Ubuntu 8.10, OO 2.4.1-11)

In previous versions of Open Office, it was possible to specify an URL
in the File->Open dialog. OpenOffice would then load the entire web-
page (including css, layout, images etc.) as if it was any other
document. It's not a simple fetch of a single-file from an URL (ok,
maybe it does that too), but the loading of a whole web-page.

You could then save it, or my typical use: export to a PDF to save a
nicely rendered version of the web-page.

Now if I open "http://example.com/interesting.html"; I get a error
"/home/user/http://example.com/internesting.html"; - File Does not Exist.

[Bug 326769] [NEW] Emulation of middle button and scroll wheel is broken.

2009-02-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

I use a Logitech Marble Mouse trackball, and have a hal policy file
setup with the following rules:

1 8 3 2 9
true

This allows me to emulate a middle mouse button by clicking the two
large left and right buttons simultaneously, and also lets me emulate a
scroll wheel by clicking the small left button while scrolling the
trackball.

Somewhere between xorg-server 2:1.5.99.901-1ubuntu1 and
2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu3, this broke.

xinput shows that the evdev propeties are being set correctly (at least,
this output is the same with both versions of xorg-server:

me.

[Bug 306591] Re: Locale settings not used by GNOME session

2009-02-07 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Andrew:

> Jonathan, do you have any idea what may be at fault here?
> I'm interested in filing this upstream but I'm not sure which Gnome package
> to target.

The more I look at this, the more I think there may well be no real bug
here at all.

My change to the summary line was trying (apparently inadequately, since
you undid it!) to suggest that the issue is not really "locale settings
not respected by Gnome". Locale settings most definitely *are*
respected by Gnome, when they are set in /etc/environment, or when set
from the gdm login screen. I have multiple languages installed on this
machine (English, French, German and Spanish), and I can log in using
any one of them, and get appropriate menus, and clock date/time format,
spell checking, etc. Locales *are* being respected. Unlike English,
French, German and Spanish, I don't speak any Egyptian Arabic, so I've
not tried logging in in that language :)

Rephrasing a bit: the issue being reported is (as I understand it, and
now we are clear that refdoc's locale issue is clearly not a part of
this specific issue): Gnome does not use locale settings which are set
in the user's shell initialization file.

The question then becomes: Should Gnome in fact examine and use such
settings, since Gnome does not itself necessarily use any per-session
shell at all! Why would Gnome be expected to look in a user's shell
initialization file? Is there documentation out there that says it
should or will do so?

Especially since Ubuntu 8.10 has the "fast session switching"
capability, allowing one to have multiple sessions open (logged in as
different users) in different locales, I am not sure there is really
much of a case for saying that Gnome *should* be parsing shell
initialization files to look for locale settings -- is there? I'm open
to hearing the argument that it should really do that, but trying to
look at this from the user's viewpoint, I don't (yet?) see why it
should.

The shell respects the locale settings set in the global environment and
its initialization file(s); Gnome respects the locale settings in the
global environment and it is own initialization files. (For example,
have you considered setting locale-related variables in ~/.xsession, if
you want to explore this kind of thing? Maybe in ~/.dmrc ??)

Logically, if you are using a GUI, then you set its locale at GUI
session startup, just as you would set a shell's locale at shell
startup. Each has a different way to specify its initial settings
(though of course both respect the global environment).

Does this make sense?

Jonathan

[Bug 96991] Re: 3D stuff breaks with Compiz: Redirected Direct Rendering is needed in DRI

2009-02-07 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Using -intel, -ati and -nvidia (proprietary) on jaunty alpha 4, I got no
issues running glxgears or google earth with any compiz plugin (wobbly,
transparency, expo) and I am able to put windows over Google Earth as
much as glxgears without getting weird behaviors. So far, all my tests
seems to reveal that this bug is fixed.

I'm not 100% sure this is a dupe of bug #168648.

Inkscape should fully maximize (when told to by the WM). I can confirm
this issue (the main app window does not resize horizontally when told
to 'maximize') on ubuntu 8.10 with gnome/metacity as the WM - no compiz.
If memory serves, this is recent - 0.45 acted properly (on the same OS).

[Bug 172768] Re: stunnel4 should be run from rc?.d after wifi-radar, not before

2009-02-07 Thread BradB
I've been having this problem in 8.10 as well (I have stunnel set to run
as a client so that an SSL-incapable email notifier can access an SSL
IMAP server). However, even if I change stunnel's startup scripts to
S95, it still doesn't work without a manual service restart.

I'm unsure how the stuff in /etc/network/ works... care to expound how I
might be able to use that instead?

Unfortunately I do not have a computer with Ubuntu installed any more,
so I can't be much help with this bug.

However, retesting this with Abiword 2.6.4 on Debian Sid I get the same
garbled result. I am using the standard English language settings.

I suspect that it worked for you because you don't have the Utopia Std.
font from Adobe installed (it's non-free and not part of any
distribution), so Abi used a non-otf substitute font for display and
export-to-pdf.

[Bug 95853] Re: Delete file in Nautlus - no warning

Has nautilus always been this way? I find it hard to believe that any

switching back to konqueror until this is fixed. This bug is far to

Oh, but my problem is exactly as described in the first post and I'm
using Intrepid. I was just commenting that I tried too with a Kubuntu

So, my soundcard is a V8237, it's detected and appears in the "aplay -l"
list. Everything _seems_ fine but there's not sound. I think is the
same issue, but if you still think that I should open a new bug ticket
then please let me know.
