[Bug 319210] Re: [jaunty] segfault during X startup with randr < 1.2 drivers

2009-02-25 Thread Ralph Green
Howdy,
My i815 based system could not start X because of this error. I found a
simple solution for now. Edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add a line that
says:
 Option "NoAccel""true"
in the Device section. There are some references on a RedHat board about this
making X very slow. It is performing OK for my needs. I am using this as a
test box for jaunty and a Miro box after jaunty goes prime time. It plays
videos fine now.

You might play with the GConf settings that are there. There are
several that control which things FUSA shows, you might find something

[Bug 334510] Re: [Jaunty]Desktop doesn't show saved files

You removed the folderview applet, so yes, the Desktop files are missing.
If you'd prefer, you can click the Plasma icon in the upper-right corner of the
desktop, select "Appearance Settings", and change the Desktop Activity type to

[Bug 334669] [NEW] problem with latest adobe flash plugin

2009-02-25 Thread Ted Pritchard
Public bug reported:

I use 8.04, was using Epiphany (Gecko) this morning and it was working
satisfactorily including the plugin for Adobe Flash. I got an indication that
new software was available, clicked on the icon and found that a new version of
Adobe Flash plugin was available for download and installation. I went ahead
and allowed Update manager to complete the installation. Epiphany immediately
disappeared and now won't load.
According to Synaptic package Mgr the version of Adobe Flash plugin currently
installed is 10.0.22.87-2.
I've tried reloading both Epiphany and the new plugin but it hasn't fixed the
problem
In view of the sequence of events I assume there is a good chance there is a
bug here.

[Bug 304871] Re: [i845G] Fatal server error: Couldn't bind memory for BO front buffer (Jaunty)

2009-02-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
> Ubuntu seems to be well on the path of "latest, high end equipment
only" which is the way Microsoft goes.

Please, that is hardly a fair statement to make.

The purpose for putting out new Ubuntu releases is *primarily* to
provide users with easy access to the latest code from upstream. If
upstream chooses to drop support for some old piece of hardware, there
is often little we can do about it at the distro level; if it's
something our OEMs care about or that has a ton of users, Canonical may
be able to justify investing resources there, but that is rarely the
case with legacy graphics hardware. If an older release works, stick
with it.

Ultimately, part of the reason we all want to see hardware vendors
putting out their drivers as open source instead of proprietary, is so
that when the company decides to cut off support for a chip, at least
the community has the option to provide support for it themselves.
We're in that situation now for i815 and i825; it stands to reason
eventually we'll be there with i845 too.

I don't like seeing support for old Intel chips deteriorate any more
than owners of the chip do, but I think at some point the only way we're
going to keep up support on the old chips is if some community heroes
step up to the plate and take a swing at it themselves. The good news
is that with -intel, most of the code is already there, and experts are
easily at hand for advice and guidance; if you have the hardware, ample
free time, and know a little C coding, you can do it.

Apologies for the late reply. I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10, and it works fine.
I even braved going back to a new update of 9.04 and all is okay here too.
Please cancel this bug.

[Bug 323823] Re: Battery Status Detected Incorrectly (MSI-1719 / GX700)

2009-02-25 Thread bkloppenborg
I've been running the kernel with Timo's patch for four days now without
any kernel parameters. The battery status has always been detected
correctly.

The patch in question is found here:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12011#c105

And is compiled by normal means (see discussion and links in that
thread). If anyone else would like to try the kernel, I have built a
.deb for the kernel and headers (2.6.27-11 amd64) and can place it in a
public place. Send me an email if you are interested.

Provided that the patch stays in the kernel and is not overwritten
(unlike the previous patch), I think this problem is solved.

[Bug 334640] Re: Cannot open Excel XML files in openoffice 3.0

2009-02-25 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
This error occurs on all files, including those generated by oo 3.0, so
it is probably easier for you to create one yourself than to download
this file. However, as requested I attach Test.xml, which I created with
oo 3.0. When opened with oo 2.4 the Cell A1 contains "Test" (correct),
when opened with oo 3.0, it is empty (incorrect) and the above error is
generated.

[Bug 34043] Re: Nvidia binary driver requires Option "NvAGP" "1" for reliable suspend/resume

2009-02-25 Thread Tim Abell
I'm on intrepid ibex 8.10 on a dell inspiron 8500 with nvidia geforce 4200.
For the record I now have suspend/hibernate/resume working. (haven't tried
multiple consecutive yet)

For me initially if i recall correctly, hibernate would hang on
resuming, and suspend would fail to turn the the laptop's screen back
on.

The thing that confused me most, having read all the links etc, is that
under 8.10 xorg.conf appears to be empty by default. I applied all the
other settings mentioned, and I'm not sure what cured hibernate, but
that started working first.

The thing that seemed to get the display to come back on after suspend
was running the nvidia settings program and unchecking 'sync to vblank'
under 'xvideo settings'/'video texture adapter' and rebooting. This
created some content in my xorg. I have no idea if it started working
directly or indirectly because of what I did.

I never set the NvAGP setting in the end.

[Bug 180362] Re: mplayer plugin firefox only produces sound in active window

2009-02-25 Thread david_kt
I have this problem as well on ubuntu 8.10. But the solution is simple:

1. Right click on the mplayer
2. Choose configure
3. Remove tick on "Pause Video when hidden".

[Bug 309303] Re: UNR - Italian Keyboard Configuration on Dell Mini 9

2009-02-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
komputes, could you edit the file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/it to
update it to suit the keyboard more properly. I'm guessing key symbols
AE08, AE09, etc. need updated. Should be straightforward to do if you
have the hw in front of you.

Send me your edited it file and we can extract an upstreamable patch
from that. Not sure whether we can just update the it keyboard
directly, or if it would need to be done as an alternate keyboard
layout; upstream can give us direction there.

[Bug 323041] Re: Patches for Crimean Tatar (Crimean Turkish) keyboard layouts

2009-02-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
The patch in comment #21 is fine and I've queued it for upload. At the
moment though we're frozen for the Alpha-5 release, but I should be able
to get it in by Monday.

As a general rule, debdiffs are always appreciated as they usually make
my work easier (and allow you to get the credit for your work). But for
xkeyboard-config, I take patches however is convenient for the
contributor. But the #1 most important rule I have is that the patches
must go upstream; the fewer ubuntu-specific patches we have to carry,
the easier it will be to maintain in the future. Plus this way it
benefits Linux as a whole, not just Ubuntu.

[Bug 334644] [NEW] [MSI MS-7374] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-02-25 Thread Victor B. Gonzalez
Public bug reported:

I cannot suspend to ram or disk on Jaunty. I never tried it before so I
wouldn't know if it ever worked. I tried changing BIOS from S1 to S3 and
changed /etc/default/acpi-support ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem to standby... I
tried variations and mixes and suspend just wont work. I tried changing
the wakeup mode in BIOS from BIOS to OS and back and more variations...
Another thing, this bug reporting tool that automatically pops up, wont
popup till about a day later sometimes and sometimes in the dozens...
I've tried many things... I have no idea what the issue is. Anyone have
a clue? How do I get started figuring this out? I am exhausted :(

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2009-02-25 Thread James
This bug is causing usplash to crap-out on shutdown and display a nice screen
of vertical coloured lines, as reported in this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/301628

usplash shows the coloured lines at exactly the same time as the CIFS
error messages are shown in shutdown.

Taking splash out of the kernel boot line in the grub list file removes
the graphical element of shutdown/startup and causes the CIFS error line
to appear (rather than being hidden by usplash) - It doesn't fix this
bug but at least the risk of damage to my screen is reduced.

[Bug 334378] Re: Help->About opens two tabs in browser

2009-02-25 Thread charles
If this is reproducible, it should be bumped from Ubuntu's transmission
tracker to the gtk+ bug tracker -- all transmission is doing here is
calling gtk_show_about_dialog() and setting the "website" and "website-
label" properties to "http://www.transmissionbt.com/";.

Here's the code in question:

[Bug 157973] Re: pidgin: signals_test.pl perl plugin causes segfault on amd64

2009-02-25 Thread psylem
I can confirm that the bug has been fixed up stream in Pidgin release
2.5.4. But even Ubuntu 9.04 will not have this version. You'll have to
upgrade manually.

I was able to successfully upgrade without loosing any functionality of plugins
available from the official ubuntu release, as well as the SIPE plugin I had
previously manually compiled. I was a little worried about breaking the SIPE
plugin because I needed it for access to my corporate Office Communicator
account, but as the Pidgin crew state, only major version upgrades should break
plugins. In my experience it's safe to upgrade using the package from
http://www.getdeb.net/release/3736 if you really need perl plugin support on an
AMD64 machine. I'm using Hardy and upgraded with the following steps:
1. Backed up my precompiled SIPE plugin binaries (/usr/lib/pidgin/libsipe.so
and /usr/lib/pidgin/libsipe.la)
2. Shutdown and uninstalled Pidgin (along with all the plugins, taking note of
what plugins I was loosing)
3. Downloaded the 4 required packages for Pidgin version 2.5.4 from getdeb.net
4. Installed downloaded packages in the following order: pidgin-data;
libpurple0; libpurple-bin; pidgin
5. Reinstalled previously removed plugins from official Ubuntu repository
6. Restored my SIPE binaries back into /usr/lib/pidgin/ overwriting whatever
the official ubuntu pidgin-sipe plugin created in there

Pidgin started as normal with my Microsoft LCS/OCS account still intact.
All other plugins worked correctly and none of my settings were lost
(phew!). Most importantly Perl plugin support now works!

[Bug 332604] Re: transmission popups instead of libindicate

2009-02-25 Thread charles
This related to #334252, which contains a patch to libtransmission's
existing code that prevents the popups. That code is slated for 1.51,
which will be out soon.

I'm not marking this as a duplicate, though, since it also brings up the
point of using libindicate. I don't see much documentation for it and
am not running the betas, but if someone wants to include a patch that
tests for libindicate's pkg-config in configure.ac, and then uses that
instead of libnotify iff libindicate is present, I'd use that patch
upstream.

[Bug 334640] [NEW] Cannot open Excel XML files in openoffice 3.0

2009-02-25 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I attempt to open a Excel 2003 XML file in openoffice I get the
following error on the terminal I launched openoffice from:

Compiler warnings:

file:///usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/share/xslt/import/spreadsheetml/spreadsheetml2ooo.xsl:
line 4536: Attribute 'style:family' outside of element.
ERROR: 'Error checking type of the expression 'funcall(count,
[+(cast(ParentLocationPath(step("child", 74), step("child", 75)), real),
funcall(number, [variable-ref(spannedRows/result-tree)]))])'.'
FATAL ERROR: 'Could not compile stylesheet'

I then receive an empty spreadsheet regardless of the actual contents of
the XML file.

I can open and create XML files in in OpenOffice 2.x (with Ubuntu 8.10
or Fedora), however, in openoffice 3.0 I get the above error. This error
occurs in both Ubuntu 8.10 64bit (with oo 3.0 from PPA) and Ubuntu 9.04
32bit with default oo 3.0. This bug occurs when opening files with
created with OpenOffice 2.x or OpenOffice 3.0 (I have not tested files
created with other programs)

Unlike Bug #91759, this bug does not lead to excessive CPU usage.

To Reproduce:
Install openoffice.org-java-common
Start openoffice from a terminal, create a new spreadsheet, make any
modification to the sheet, save the sheet as a Excel 2003 XML file. Close this
sheet.
Attempt to reopen the sheet. (You will then notice the above error on the
terminal, and that you the sheet you just opened is empty)

[Bug 18250] Re: file-rollers progress bar does not indicate progress

2009-02-25 Thread Antioch
Yes, in Ubuntu 8.10 - File Roller 2.24.1, for multi-part RAR archives
the progress bar stays at 50% for the duration of the extraction. The
status text indicator displays what file part it is currently
processing, but that is the only thing that actually works.

I do not know how the RAR file-format works, but I suspect that there is
a simply solution for this. Either the lead RAR file's header contains
information about the size of the archive, or you can scan the directory
for all .rar files of the same name as the given archive - this will
give you the maximum number of files. Use this in combination with the
knowledge of which file you're on and then you can get a more accurate
progress bar. AKA 1/10 -> 10%, 2/10 -> 20%, etc.

[Bug 291508] Re: xchat-gnome doesn't authenticate me to NICKSERV

2009-02-25 Thread Denis
I have such problem after an upgrade from elder version of XChat.
IRC server I use accepts only "/msg nickserv IDENTIFY password" command.
It seems, that XChat sends "/nickserv IDENTIFY password" to server. If server
doesn't accept this command alias, authentication fails.
In my case, solution is to write "right" command to "Connect command" field in
IRC network settings.
