I disagree. Palm only recently announced that it would be dropping
support for the PalmOS. There are a number of people what have PalmOS
devices, such as anyone who owns a Palm Trio cell phone or a Palm TX
handheld. I know of at least 200 (the nursing department at my
University), a few friends with Palm cell phones, and my Dad.

[Bug 334470] [NEW] FFE: Network UPS Tools 2.4.1-2

2009-02-25 Thread Arnaud Quette
Public bug reported:

FeatureFreeze Exception for Network UPS Tools

* A description of the proposed changes, with sufficient detail to estimate
their potential impact on the distribution
--
Update the nut package in Jaunty from 2.2.2-10ubuntu3 to 2.4.1-2 through a
Debian sync (see LP: #332030)
This has a minimal impact in terms of risks, but a maximal impact in terms of
new features, Ubuntu differentiation, user benefits and diff with Debian (see
below)

* A rationale for the exception, explaining the benefit of the change
--
- this represents the final step of the "Improved Power Management" blueprint:
https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/improved-power-management

The other milestones have been reached in time, but sadly not for NUT
(too much upstream and Debian work)!

- this version adds many new features (needed for Ubuntu Server)
see the attached upstream-new-features.txt attached

- this version address a lot of bugs (see below) and has seen a lot of
Debian work (see LP: #332030)

- LP bugs closed:
- 1568: nut takes too long to start
- 221737: upsd doesn't start on system startup
- 239025: usbhid-ups not behaving with Tripplite UPS
- 278495: megatec_usb does'nt detect ups
- 332030: [sync request] Please sync nut 2.4.1 from Debian unstable (main)
- 332032: nut wrongly install nut-cgi's config files

- remaining diffs with Debian
  * debian/control:
- Update maintainer field as per spec.
(The below ones only need to be uncommented in the matching file...)
- Add Breaks to ensure we have correct udev version.
  * debian/{nut-cgi,nut}.postinst: add nut to the dialout
and nut groups unconditionally, to handle the upgrade from the hardy
release.
  * debian/rules: pre merge the changes for Ubuntu (udev path and version),

* Any additional information which would be helpful in considering the decision
--
- ChangeLog can be found here:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/nut/tags/v2.4.1/ChangeLog?op=file&rev=0&sc=0

- jaunty pbuilder log is attached in the archive
(nut_2.4.1-2_i386.build)

- install log (clean test in pbuilder chroot) are also attached with the
following tests:
- jaunty: fresh install and update from 2.2.2-10ubuntu3 to 2.4.1-2 of a
running configuration (jaunty-{fresh,upgrade}.install)
- intrepid: update from 2.2.2-6ubuntu1 to 2.4.1-2
(intrepid-update.install)
- hardy: not considered since jaunty is not an LTS (?) so there is no
interest in testing 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.2 upgrade

The validation were:
- check that the install or update goes smoothly, without warning or errors,
- check that the previous configuration has been migrated from /etc/default/nut
to /etc/nut/nut.conf in case of upgrade
- check that the resulting configuration runs the same way and is still working
in case of upgrade (ie the same daemons restarted successfully)
- check that the user is warned that nut has to be configured in case of fresh
install (#221737)
All this has been done with a bare config (see the attached nut-config.txt),
using the dummy-ups driver

** Affects: nut (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 31746] Re: Difficult to find out how to use multiple profiles at the same time

2009-02-25 Thread Marius Gedminas
** Summary changed:

- Impossible to use multiple profiles at the same time
+ Difficult to find out how to use multiple profiles at the same time

** Description changed:

Since I upgraded to Firefox 1.5 from Dapper, I can no longer use two
different profiles at the same time.

When I run firefox for the first time, I see the profile manager window
and I can choose a profile. If I then run 'firefox -P different-
profile-name', I get a new browser window that uses the same profile.
- If I run 'firefox -ProfileManager', I also a new browser window instead
- of the profile manager.
+ If I run 'firefox -ProfileManager', I also get a new browser window
+ instead of the profile manager.

[Bug 315252] Re: broken "linux" link in kernel headers

2009-02-25 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Ok so there are actually two directories which are broken in the header
packages:

-lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2009-02-25 17:11
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-8-generic/include/linux/linux ->
../../linux-headers-2.6.28-8/include/linux
-lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2009-02-25 17:11
./usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-8-generic/include/asm-x86/asm-x86 ->
../../linux-headers-2.6.28-8/include/asm-x86

These are caused by the sweep over the header to ensure we do have all
the directories. This fails to check if we actually do, checking only
if the file exists. Where the directory was already made due to a
contained file, then we miss it and create the link triggering bogus
links above.

Seems simple to fix. Patch attached. Will push to the kernel-team.

[Bug 330814] Re: pulseaudio[4255]: segfault

2009-02-25 Thread sovnarkom
Yes sometimes, when use rhythmbox I have same as vniento have:

E: alsa-util.c: snd_pcm_avail_update() returned a value that is exceptionally
large: 3221224740 bytes (18260911 ms) Most likely this is a Linux bug. Please
report this issue to the ALSA developers.
Soft CPU time limit exhausted, terminating.
Hard CPU time limit exhausted, terminating forcibly.
Aborted

This seems to be an ALSA or ALSA Plug-in bug, or two separate bugs.
Is there place to report ALSA bugs or to track progress of already reported
bugs?

And can anybody reproduce this on Interpid or Hardy or it affects only
Jaunty?

[Bug 282326] Re: Power Manager plugin prevents Suspend when not playing music

2009-02-25 Thread Marlin Forbes
The player thinks it's still playing once it reaches the end of a
playlist. Evince of this is the pushed in state of the play button. I'm
on the latest Intrepid-proposed release. Changing the state to not
playing when the playlist ends shoudl go some way to solving the issue.

Another option (the better one) is to have an option in setting
somewhere where we can decide if we want suspension to be stopped if the
player is playing.

Most of the time, I don't care if the music's playing and want it to
suspend.

[Bug 327775] Re: Evolution won't parse messages, stuck on "Formating message ..." in the status bar

You can also see the same issue in Jaunty with it's latest Evolution
build. All of the messages I receive are in HTML, so I can't tell you if
the same bug would happen on a plain text message. One moment I'd be
reading a message in one folder and the next moment I can't read any
messages. That's all I can give you for now. If you have any bright idea
how this can be traced or troubleshooted I'd be happy to try.

BTW, I did open a bug report in Bugzilla about this. Thanks for the

[Bug 31746] Re: Impossible to use multiple profiles at the same time

2009-02-25 Thread Marius Gedminas
I guess the main issue here is this: it's unclear how someone could use
multiple Firefox profiles.

'man firefox' says there's no man page. 'firefox -h' lists '-P
profilename' and -'ProfileManager' options, but if you try to use them
when you already have a Firefox window open (and who doesn't have one
open all the time?), they will be silently ignored, leading users to
assume they're broken. The '-a' option is not documented by 'firefox
-h'. Only obscure googling/reading the wrapper shell script sources
tells you that you should run 'firefox -a profilename -P profilename' to
get a new window using a separate profile. The other workaround --
using '-no-remote' instead of '-a something' -- also suffers from the
same lack of documentation.

Even when you discover that, it doesn't always do what you want if you
want to open new windows in the firefox instance that uses a different
profile from your main one, e.g. try:

  1. firefox -a selenium -P selenium &
  2. firefox -a selenium http://www.google.com

Step (2) will give you an error message "Firefox is already running, but
is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the
existing Firefox process, or restart your system." This directly
contradicts the bit of documentation that Michael quoted and makes
certain borderline use cases hard or impossible (an automated test
runner that wants to spawn new firefox windows and interact with them --
I'd rather it did that in a separate profile with all the correct
language settings and js options to disable all the interactive popup
confirmations).

I would suggest closing this long and meandering bug and instead opening
a few new ones:

  1. please document the '-a' and '-no-remote' options in firefox --help
  2. please document that '-P' and '-ProfileManager' are ignored when firefox
with the given application ID is already running
  3. please make 'firefox -a someappid url' successfully communicate with an
already running firefox instance instead of showing an error

and perhaps, for better user friendliness

  4. please make 'firefox -ProfileManager' always open the profile manager
(i.e. treat it as if -no-remote was implicitly requested)
  5. please make 'firefox -P profilename' open a browser window using that
profile (e.g. treat it as if -a profilename was also specified)

Sounds good?

[Bug 290648] Re: code needs to require 'pg' instead of 'postgres'

2009-02-25 Thread Bryan McLellan
Spoke to upstream about this package, along with the discussion in the
debian bug he adds,

"The benefit of allowing people who use ruby-postgres directly (as
opposed to a wrapper layer like Ruby/DBI or Rails/Active Record) to
postpone the migration is not worth the costs: supporting an obsolete
package with dead upstream, extra load on package archive and mirrors
infrastructure, user confusion due to having two almost but not exactly
similar libraries performing the same job."

I agree, I don't believe that adding an ubuntu package for the obsolete
library or forking the libpgsql-ruby package in ubuntu is worth the
effort.

[Bug 334103] Re: [Dell Inc. Studio XPS 1340] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-02-25 Thread ZTom
Bluetooth seems to be a problematic on its own, not related to
hibernate:

restarting ubuntu the switch is working correctly, but BT only appears
when it was on during boot, booting with BT off or turning it off later
will make it impossible to bring back the functionality with switch.

running hid2hci after switching it on brings bluetooth
icon/functionality back.

After hibernate/resume:

Switch stops working for Wifi.
Bluetooth works the same: led/device is switchable, icon appears with hid2hci

seems like udev failure on BT account?

/lib/udev/rules.d/62-bluez-hid2hci.rules:
ACTION=="add", ATTRS{idVendor}=="413c", ATTRS{bInterfaceProtocol}=="02",
ATTRS{bmAttributes}=="e0", RUN+="/usr/sbin/hid2hci --tohci"

Udev Debug log is attached, I see the correct vendor but it would take
some time for me to be able to say, if some other rule is preventing
bluez rule to fire or what may be wrong with the rule itself.. but it's
safe to say hid2hci will not be executed as needed.

[Bug 333542] Re: check_bug_pattern in report.py has a strange ProcCmdLine

No, the problem was that in the crash file ProcCmdLine looks like:

ProcCmdLine: User Name=UUID=4070-D69D

However, when processing it with check_bug_pattern ProcCmdLine was:

root=/dev/md1 ro

I'd expect the two things to be the same.

Ah, I see. So the indicator plugin doesn't provide those, or at least

[Bug 334457] [NEW] libpango1.0-0: /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2002.3 contains RPATH setting

2009-02-25 Thread Sascha Silbe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpango1.0-0

/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2002.3 contains an RPATH setting, causing third
party software like sugar-jhbuild to fail under certain circumstances (see [1]
for an example of problems caused by this - the actual bug caused by
libpango1.0-0 is a similar, but different one).
Debians current opinion on rpath [2] seems to be that it should NOT be set,
except under very rare circumstances.
I haven't tested whether Debians packages contain the rpath setting as well, so
it might be an upstream packaging bug.

Steps to reproduce:
1. install chrpath
2. chrpath -l /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2002.3

Results:
/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2002.3: RPATH=/usr/lib

Expected:
no rpath setting

[Bug 295091] Re: kernel crashes at boot on a dell inspiron 531.

2009-02-25 Thread Andy Whitcroft
@gbon -- sorry for the long delay. I have respun the debug to try and
get more information and to also slow down the panic itself when it
occurs to make it more likely we get the top of the panic for you to
take a picture of. New kernels are at the URL below, if you could give
them a test and report back here:

Re: [Bug 331589] Re: system beep in jaunty is the most annoying sound known to man

2009-02-25 Thread Luke Yelavich
It has been solved, at least for initial installs. Pete, what you will
have to do is go into the mixer, and turn down/mute the "PC Beep"
control. That will get rid of that loud beep you are getting.

As the changelog for the alsa-utils upload above explains, this sound
control will be muted by default for fresh installs, but will allow
people to enable it should they choose to do so.

[Bug 331472] Re: [RS482] garbled desktop background with 8.10 and ATI Xpress 200

2009-02-25 Thread Andreas Gustafsson

Yes - when I set System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects to None,
a normal background appears, and I can move windows without any display
corruption. This was tested with 8.10, since alpha 5 still isn't out.
