[Bug 281089] Re: [intrepid] Kernel warning, network and usb mouse fail after resume

2009-02-27 Thread Jeff Trull
A few observations:

1) There appear to be a number of other people reporting suspend issues with my
network driver - bug 291017, for example.
2) I now have a workaround, sort of - I can add a line to
/etc/pm/config.d/local as follows:

SUSPEND_MODULES="via_rhine uhci_hcd"

and I will have network and mouse again when I return from suspend.
Unfortunately the mouse settings are forgotten - my left hand mouse is
now a right hand mouse until I re-apply the settings through the window
manager. Maybe that's a separate bug.

3) It seems that the two resume issues (usb mouse and ethernet) are
orthogonal; I can set SUSPEND_MODULES to unload only via_rhine and my
network will work but my mouse will still be broken, and vice versa with
uhci_hcd.

Re: [Bug 335084] Re: firefox makes unlimited instances of itself

2009-02-27 Thread Jerry Story
I have new information about the firefox bug. I have a link that
triggers the bug.

Go to this website. This is safe so far. It won't trigger the bug yet.
http://www.thunderbolts.info/thunderblogs/archives/goodspeed08/goodspeedarchive.htm
http://tinyurl.com/bbb7c8

Near the top at the right is "contact us". When I click on "contact
us", the firefox bug happens. It makes either endless new windows or
endless new tabs, depending on 'Edit -> Preferences -> Tabs'.

Thanks for the 'killall firefox' tip.

[Bug 301480] Re: can't connect to PAN NAP

2009-02-27 Thread sanktnelson
i have this problem too, and I also think it is a very severe
regression. It makes my machine useless for me during travel.

I have in principle found out how to create the connection without pand
(some python script from the web), but the behavior is the same as with
pand from the bluez-compat package: My phone asks me for authorization
twice, and after I allow the first one my laptop aborts the connection
with "permission denied".

This is really sad: An essential functionality for mobile users that
has been working great for like the last three years is completely
broken in the newest release, and stays that way 4months after the
release is out!

I realize this is probably not a ubuntu problem but upstream, but
nevertheless...

ALSO use the sanity inducing ESC key to let the neophytes regain

I just realized that the parameter naming on this website is completely
different than in the in-line help file. They use k to describe the
shape factor (Beta, as above), and lambda to describe the scale
parameter (alpha, as above). Regardless, entering the parameters as
outlined on the link above produces the correct result, which is
different than the help file indicates.

2
3

So no need to put anything else in startup scripts and all feautures

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-02-27 Thread curtis.lysher
I have been searching for two days for why I am having this same
problem. I have two systems, both running intrepid from the same
install disc. The system with the problem is a Vostro 1000 laptop
running Intrepid with 2.6.27-11. The other system is an Acer Aspire5641
desktop running the same kernel. The usb drives were both formatted
with gparted on the laptop and owned by my local user account. The Acer
desktop has no problems whatsoever, getting around 35MBps transfers on
any usb drive. Those same drives start at about 4MBps on the laptop
then drop to 600kBps. I noticed this problem because my 120gb external
maxtor is what I use for movies, and my movies started skipping and then
the system would become highly unstable. My laptop is almost never
online as my desktop has most of the storage, so I just transfer what I
want with my usb hdd. However, I do plug it in weekly and grab all
updates through the update manager. The laptop played 720p movies fine,
and now cannot even playback a 320x240 video without locking up. When
this happens my internal hdd goes crazy, and the system slows so badly
that my cursor barely moves. It is very obvious thanks to google that
this is not a hardware specific issue, many people are having issues
with all sorts of hardware devices, including usb controllers and
different drives.

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
** Summary changed:

- scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps
+ Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: scim
-
- If scim is being used, accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome
- apps.
+ Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps.

Spanish layout uses a two-key press in order to write an accented letter
(i.e. you click ´ and then a in order to write á).

- I'm not sure if this is a scim related problem, or if its related to the
- window manager (gnome, kde...).
+ Steps to follow:
+ -Install Konqueror from the repositories (or download Opera from it's web)
+ -Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard->Layouts and add "Spain". Click on
Layout Options and enable a layout switching that works for you (standard is
clicking both alts but that didn't work for me, so I chose clicking both
shifts).
+ -Go to any application (e.g. gedit), switch to spanish layout, and write an
accented letter, such as á.
+ -Go to Konqueror and try to do that, it will not let you, you will write ´a

- Steps to follow:
- -Go to System->Administration->Language support.
- -Add Spanish (I also installed Japanese, but you probably do not need to
install it to reproduce the error)
- -Enable 'Complex character writing' (you will probably have to reboot)
- -Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and make sure that you have
Spanish(Spain) (I also installed greek, but you probably do not need to install
it to reproduce the error)
- -Install some non-gnome application. Try for example Konqueror from the
repositories, or download Opera from it's web.
- -Go to any non-gnome application and, using spanish layout, try to write any
letter with any accent, such as á, it will write ´a.
+ If you install complex writing (scim) and add spanish to it, you will be
+ able to write accented letters, as long as you use the scim
+ "Spanish/European" layout, and not the linux default.

- I reinstalled fresh again doing JUST these steps, and the problem happened
again. All packages are up to date.
- scim 1.4.7-3ubuntu8
- scim-anthy 1.2.4-1ubuntu2
- scim-bridge-agent 0.4.14-1ubuntu2
- scim-bridge-client-gtk 0.4.14-1ubuntu2
- scim-gtk2-immodule 1.4.7-3ubuntu8
- scim-modules-socket 1.4.7-3ubuntu8
+ The first two comments were added before I found out this problem was
+ not scim related.

[Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
At some point during my installations I must have done something right.
I still cannot write accented letters in non-gnome apps, such as
Konkeror or Opera, but if I click on the small keyboard icon near the
clock, I can now see two spanish icons:

Spanish/Keyboard
Other - Spanish/European

The first one is the standard spanish keyboard, and it's the one that is
failing. I cannot write á with it
The second one seems to be the scim one, and it DOES allow me to write á with
it!

So my guess is it's not a scim problem, but a problem with whatever the
standard keyboard application is.

[Bug 306721] Re: Bluetooth is completely broken on Ubuntu 8.10

2009-02-27 Thread Jeremy Visser
No success here at all. In my O.P. I said it was working on Gentoo --
that was because it was still running BlueZ 3.36. Now I've updated my
Gentoo system to BlueZ 4.28, and Bluetooth audio is completely broken on
Gentoo as well. I guess this is not an Ubuntu-specific issue.

I think Ubuntu should completely roll back to BlueZ 3.36 for Jaunty for
the sake of sanity. Suicide rates might go down worldwide.

[Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
After seeing the packages, I thought I'd give it a try and install scim-
bridge-client-qt 0.4.14-1ubuntu2 to see if Konkeror now behaved
correctly, but it didn't work, even after rebooting.

I also installed scim-qtimm 0.9.4-2ubuntu3, but that didn't fix it
either, even after rebooting.

Finally, I tried installing skim 1.4.5-4ubuntu3. Still nothing.

[Bug 335732] [NEW] scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

If scim is being used, accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome
apps.

Spanish layout uses a two-key press in order to write an accented letter
(i.e. you click ´ and then a in order to write á).

I'm not sure if this is a scim related problem, or if its related to the
window manager (gnome, kde...).

Steps to follow:
-Go to System->Administration->Language support.
-Add Spanish (I also installed Japanese, but you probably do not need to
install it to reproduce the error)
-Enable 'Complex character writing' (you will probably have to reboot)
-Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and make sure that you have Spanish(Spain)
(I also installed greek, but you probably do not need to install it to
reproduce the error)
-Install some non-gnome application. Try for example Konqueror from the
repositories, or download Opera from it's web.
-Go to any non-gnome application and, using spanish layout, try to write any
letter with any accent, such as á, it will write ´a.

I reinstalled fresh again doing JUST these steps, and the problem happened
again. All packages are up to date.
scim 1.4.7-3ubuntu8
scim-anthy 1.2.4-1ubuntu2
scim-bridge-agent 0.4.14-1ubuntu2
scim-bridge-client-gtk 0.4.14-1ubuntu2

I'm running 8.04 with an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500. The bug is definitely

well under a full compiz press.

[Bug 230527] Re: FTBFS: error: size of array `_dummy' is negative

2009-02-27 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

You have to condition the change of length of the variable, otherwise, you will
have problems in i386.
I've been able to go further than this 2 assert, after this change, you have to
change a lot of variable, and the code itself is not clean, even for i386.

This is how I did in EmTypes.h:

after getting it compiled in adm64, not sure it won't bomb everywhere...

[Bug 329489] Re: locks on unlinked files leak memory in apparmor

2009-02-27 Thread Steve Beattie
There are now test kernels for hardy in my ppa at
https://launchpad.net/~sbeattie/+archive/ppa based off of the same
patch. Again, local testing shows that the rapid memory leak in the
apparmor code in the unpatched kernel is addressed by this fix.

Feedback is appreciated. You'll want to follow the instructions at
https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA#Adding%20a%20PPA%20to%20your%20Ubuntu%20repositories
for installing from this ppa. The kernel this is based off of is the
current kernel in hardy-proposed. Thanks.

Yes, the upstream version built from source works fine, and that's a

It's the version in the Intrepid apt repositories that chokes.

[Bug 335723] [NEW] Installed Size column checked by default, but not visible

2009-02-27 Thread Hew McLachlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

On a fresh install of Ubuntu (or a LiveCD), synaptic does not display
the Installed Size column. However, looking in Settings -> Preferences
-> Columns & Fonts shows that this column is already selected. Adding or
removing other columns and then applying the changes causes the
Installed Size column to correctly become visible.

Reproduced with synaptic 0.62.5ubuntu1 on Jaunty, but this has been
present in previous Ubuntu releases for as long as I can remember.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Use a LiveCD or fresh install of Ubuntu. Column settings must not have been
previously modified.
2) Open Synaptic, and notice that the Installed Size ("Size") column is not
visible.
3) Settings -> Preferences -> Columns & Fonts.
4) Modify the visible columns (eg. add Download Size) and select OK.

What should happen:
Installed Size column should be visible to start with.

What actually happens:
Installed Size column is not visible until above steps are followed.

[Bug 335719] [NEW] F11 functionality can't be found in Full Screen mode!

2009-02-27 Thread grikdog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Newbies confronted with a Full Screen mode WHICH THEY DIDN'T TURN ON
THEMSELVES have no idea how to recover all the missing menu structures
at the top of the screen. Everyone simply reboots, cusses Firefox
roundly, and hopes it doesn't happen again! Some, like me, bother to
track down the feature, which is clearly F11 on the View menu, but THERE
SHOULD BE A WAY TO KILL THIS FOREVER so "full screen" never, ever, under
any circumstances, absolutely does not reappear. It is extremely
obnoxious.

And, I realize, it's a feature. It's also a deal breaker, if anything
better than Firefox shows up for Ubuntu.

[Bug 333993] Re: computed cell not updated when input is modified

2009-02-27 Thread Chris Cheney
So you are saying you see this bug easily reproducible with the one
document but when trying to recreate the bug using a new document and
similar formulas that it doesn't happen? If so can you rip out student
identifiable information and/or sanitize it from the original document
and attach it to the bug report? I could look at it but if I need to
forward it to the official openoffice.org developers it would be in the
public at that point which is why I am asking for a sanitized version of
the document.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

[Bug 334197] Re: WEIBULL function parameters in wrong order

2009-02-27 Thread Chris Cheney
Can you please attach the url where you read about the new WEIBULL
parameter list? I couldn't seem to locate it and want to be able to
point the developers to the discrepancy.

Thanks,

Chris

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2009-02-27 Thread manzur
** Description changed:

Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.

Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry,
restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and
limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full
potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.

  Steps to repeat:

  1. Visit a local PC store.

  What happens:
  2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software
pre-installed.
  3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.

  What should happen:
  1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like
Ubuntu.
  2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and
benefits would be apparent and known by all.
  3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.
+ 4. Some companies like Electronic Arts, Adobe and Corel should see Ubuntu
and Linux in general a great Target to deliver their software
