[Bug 357569] Re: please set usershare path

2009-04-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
OK, this bug is about net usershare info returning an error by
default, resulting in nautilus-share spurious messages. You suggest
adding usershare path = /var/lib/samba/usershares to smb.conf.
However, in default installs, net usershare info returns exactly the
same error with or without that parameter set:

$ net usershare info
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error
No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

That's because the default value of usershare path happens to be
/var/lib/samba/usershares already.
So again, I fail to see what this change would fix. Could you please explain it
to me.

[Bug 298374] Re: Samba daemon not starting

2009-04-15 Thread kuser
hello,

i am testing kubuntu jaunty alpha 6.
before samba was working very well.
since some updates this weekend i got same symptoms as described above.
samba simple won't start.
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart looks good but ps -e |grep smb shows that
samba is not running.
also my other computer wont detect it anymore.
yesterday, i did purge all samba packages and installed it back again.. enabled
gust access, did not reboot and all was working fine again. but after rebooting
machine samba is behaving funny again and the worst thing is that i cannot find
related relevant info to solve this. i even landed on a brazilien samba site,
which, uhuu, looks nice but dancing samba didnt work either..
please tell me if more info needed, i will be glad to be of some use.
thx

[Bug 361066] Re: Difficult to share external hard drives

2009-04-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Like you said, there is a couple of different bugs in that user story.
Could you please file separate bugs with the exact scenario to reproduce them,
including the error messages you got, and the expected behavior ? I'm closing
this one since we can only fix bugs about specific issues and not a general
difficulty.

Alternatively, you can submit a Make it easier/more intuitive to share
external hard drives in Ubuntu Brainstorm if you think the feature is
failing completely and must be redesigned.

[Bug 354243] Re: Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-15 Thread Stephen D Kamm
Thank you. I confirm your summary.

smbtree -b -N returns no output

Opening the location as specified creates browse-able locations in
Nautilus, and mounts them on the Desktop. This is somewhat easier (in
my situation) than using the command line or modifying fstab. I will
test this in my real-life home network.

Shouldn't the operation of obtaining the NAS's IP address, as with
findsmb, and passing it to the browsing function be written into
Nautilus? It seems to me that it advances Ubuntu to have it just work
with cheap, widely-available hardware.

[Bug 354243] Re: Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-15 Thread Stephen D Kamm
Bad news in real-life network (not the controlled experiment in bug
report):

Running Intrepid, desktop and laptop on network, each with own Samba
server (i.e. three total, including NAS), Nautilus
Locationsmb://192.168.1.66/ does not work. It shows shares, but does
not mount them on desktop, and attempting to browse them through
Nautilus results in being kicked to home directory.

CLI and fstab mounting works.

Essentially, Iomega NAS kills default Nautilus network browsing for any
user on the network.

[Bug 46081] Re: cifs is slow to read from, and choppy to write to, compared to smbfs

2009-04-15 Thread Jan Kovacik
I have Interpid box with RTL8169 chipped gigabit NIC from REPOTEC. When
I am copying from samba share to XP machine transfer speed is about
38MB/s, but when I try to copy file TO samba share, the transfer speed
is fluctuating between 500 KB and 8 MB/s.

However, I am able to copy four files simultaeously from my XP machine
with Raid 0 disks and they are being pumped to samba in same speed,
higher than one file alone :) , stable about 9MB/s It is interesting bug
and also long lasting I see.

So there is no other option than buy another crappy NIC? - i googled a
whole world to find any solution, but I found nothing :(

[Bug 361961] [NEW] dovecot not configured to listen to any ports after intrepid-jaunty upgrade

2009-04-15 Thread Steve Beattie
Public bug reported:

Performed a stock install of 8.10 ubuntu-server (i386) with the mail
server task selected and configured to be an internet with smarthost
relay. After fully updating with all intrepid updates and rebooting,
doing an upgrade to jaunty via do-release-upgrade -d resulted in dovecot
being configured with no protocols enabled. The upgrade did ask if I
wanted to use the maintainers version of dovecot.conf or use my not-

The result is a mail server that no longer provides pop3 or imap

[Bug 361961] Re: dovecot not configured to listen to any ports after intrepid-jaunty upgrade

2009-04-15 Thread Mathias Gug
As steve confirmed, the maintainer version of dovecot.conf was chosen
during the upgrade. The default version of dovecot.conf shipped by the
dovecot-common package comes with no protocol enabled (protocols=none).

Since the end user is prompted for a configuration file change during
the upgrade process and can review the difference, I'll mark this bug
invalid.

[Bug 296142] Re: Installer fails to recognize display on Averatec 3280

2009-04-15 Thread Peter Belew
I have just tried booting the Ubuntu 9.04 Beta CD (as a live CD) on this
Averatec 3280 laptop. There is a significant improvement in the
situation, but it is not quite perfect. What happens is that a large
range of resolutions, above and below the optimum resolution of 1024x768
for the LCD display on this laptop. Initially the largest resolution is
displayed, which has a problem: the display only shows the 1024x768
upper-left corner of this virtual display. Under Gnome, this is not a
disaster, since the screen resolution can be set to 1024x768 from the
System menu.

However this would be a serious problem under distros using KDE, such as
Kubuntu or Knoppix, since the panel is at the bottom of the screen, and
would disappear. I have experienced that problem with the latest
Knoppix, in fact.

Also, I have not checked to see if something can be done about this at
boot time, or when actually installing. And I have not yet checked to
see what I can do by editing xorg.conf, for 9.04 Beta.

Incidentally, there are some other displays which I've reported similar
bugs about, which show up with a maximum 600x800 resolution - erring the
other way - on a 1024x768 display.

[Bug 361505] [NEW] Hotkeys not detected on Asus F3sv (ACPI events)

2009-04-15 Thread Sika
Public bug reported:

Hi
Using jaunty fully updated (with live cd or with an upgraded intrepid), some
hotkeys are not working on my laptop (asus f3sv).
I followed the procedure there: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting
.
The hotkeys that are not working are sending ACPI events but no input event is
generated. This is the list og these keys:
hotkey ATKD 0050 - should launch email client
hotkey ATKD 0051 - should launch web browser
hotkey ATKD 0061 - switch between LCD/external monitor (Maybe
this one works, I couldn't test).
hotkey ATKD 005c - lock the screen
hotkey ATKD 0095 - the manual says Launches a multimedia
application (cd/dvd, tv, video, audio).
hotkey ATKD 008a - the manual says Switch between different
color, brightness, sharpness and contrast presets.
hotkey ATKD 0082 - should launch a webcam app (cheese for
example)
hotkey ATKD 0099 - the manual says Activate or desativate
Power for Phone, I think launching ekiga would be ok.

Other keys are working great.

Would it be possible to fix this for jaunty? It must be quite trivial to solve
with the new hotkeys management architecture?
In case this couldn't be done for jaunty, is there a workaround to make these
hotkeys work?

I can provide more info if needed.
Thanks.

$ net usershare info
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error
No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

That's because the default value of usershare path happens to be
/var/lib/samba/usershares already.
So again, I fail to see what this change would fix. Could you please explain it
to me.

[Bug 119194] Re: [hardy] ps2 mouse erratic - parity errors - lost synchronization errors

2009-04-15 Thread Timo Salokas
Hi Thomas,

I also noticed the same thing. As I got tired of the optical mouse's
erratic actions I fired up the ol' Cordless MouseMan Wheel. It works
perfectly - for a ball'd mouse.

But this is not the whole story. I'm a dual booter... yes, it's the
games, and noticed that the optical mouse would shut itself off from
time to time in Windows also! With an exception that Windows didn't
recover as good as Kubuntu did. I had to disconnect the cable and put it
back in, with a prey it worked for a while but not always. I tried
searching the cable for a magic spot with some serious twisting sessions
but ended up with frustration. It was the cord, I knew it, but I had
nothing to prove it as to where the faulty spot was.

In conclusion, I'm now using ball mouse but will buy an optical one in
the near future. I'm however confident that my problem was inside the
mouse's cable, although I could not replicate the incident in a more
sophisticated manner.

[Bug 361508] [NEW] ulimit -t doesn't work in Ubuntu 09.04 (beta) 2.6.28-11-generic

2009-04-15 Thread nguyenthanhvuh
Public bug reported:

ulimit -t doesn't work as expected in kernel 2.6.28.

I think it might be some bug imcompatability w/ kernel 2.6.28 --- I want to
file a bug to kernel dev group but just want to check here first.Whenever I
use kernel 2.6.28 (e.g., compile my own vanilla linux source), the problem
occurs. To make sure that it isn't due to my own kernel compilation and
settings, I tried on the latest Ubuntu version (Jaunty, beta) w/ kernel 2.6.28
default, problem occurs again (I didn't touch the kernel of Jaunty at all, it's
the stock default one).

Everything seems fine w/ kernel 2.6.27 (e.g., Intrepid or Hardy) or
lower. Also note that dash / bash doesn't seem to be the problem
(i.e., ulimit should work w/ both dash and bash).

Below is an example to reproduce the bug.

file: ulimit_test.sh

#!/bin/bash
ulimit -t 1
perl -e 'while(true){}'
exit 0

sh ulimit_test.sh:expected: process is killed after 1 sec,
but w/ 2.6.28: it doesn't get killed at all -- loop forever.

[Bug 361510] [NEW] [Jaunty] broken ACL management in hal - no sound card for user

2009-04-15 Thread ilf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I'm on Ubuntu (Server) 9.04 Beta, all up-to-date.

The bug in question is in current hal (0.5.12~rc1+git20090403-0ubuntu1)
and all older ones I tried (0.5.12~rc1+git20090204-0ubuntu3,
0.5.12~rc1-0ubuntu6, 0.5.12~rc1+git20090120-0ubuntu1).

The sypmtoms are similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/334299, but I am told
it's a different bug.

After booting, the Access Control Limits of /dev/snd/* don't allow
access for my user, breaking sound.

$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:217: no soundcards found...

Adjusting the ACLs by hand fixes it:

$ sudo setfacl -m u:user:rw /dev/snd/*

$ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I followed the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHal, so I am
attaching log files as well as the output of $ ck-list-sessions.

mentioned here although I can't remember the exact date. The only
applications I had freezes in were dolphin and firefox but those are the
only ones I used. Desktop effects are enabled. I'll be on holiday for

Xubuntu 9.04 beta updated 20090415

After Pulseaudio installation via Synaptic the module-x11-xsmp isn't registerad

Symptom; Movies have stuttering sound and eventually crash the player

[Bug 209873] Re: unable to use file sharing through dolphin -- file not found

2009-04-15 Thread mugginz
I came across a post by Piotr Kęplicz in a similar bug report that might
have some relevance here.

Here's his post.

Piotr Kęplicz wrote 28 minutes ago:

It seems that KDE cache doesn't get updated when it should.

As a workaround, if you experience findServiceByDesktopPath:
fileshare.desktop not found error when clicking on Configure file
sharing (kdesudo kcmshell4 fileshare), try removing contents of
/var/tmp/kdecache-root. It'll be updated automatically and the file
sharing dialog should start without errors.

I wonder if removing /var/tmp/kdecache-root will fix this problem?

[Bug 356781] Re: update-manager: Fatal IO error: client killed

2009-04-15 Thread Michael Vogt
@Dave: if the system is still in this state that it can not upgrade, could you
please run:
$ dpkg --get-selections  /tmp/pkgs.txt
and attach the file /tmp/pkgs.txt ? I will try to reproduce (and fix) the
problem then.

Thanks,
 Michael

[Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-04-15 Thread Alex57185
I had the same problem on my Dell XPS M1330 with the intel cart. I
updated this packages :

ibglu1-mesa
libgl1-mesa
libgl1-mesa-glx
mesa-utils

I use the debian packages in Sid (version 7.4-2 ) , and I updated the
intel driver in the Sid repository.

I don't have any freeze after that (and I use the Desktop effect)

[Bug 311716] Re: The slider brightness Applet has value inverted after the last update (2.6.27-11)

2009-04-15 Thread Stefan Bader
@gidantribal, the status incomplete in this case looks like it came from
the upstream bug report. But it could also be used by us to reflect that
we asked for more information and are waiting for that. Unfortunately
there is no launchpad state for that.

For this bug report, has anybody still issues on Intrepid with
_reversed_ backlight levels?

[Bug 182960] Re: Please set memory limits by default

2009-04-15 Thread Steve Langasek
A memory leak at a rate of a GB/s would quickly exhaust all system
memory and trigger the OOM killer. If the memory is being allocated in
very small quantities then it may swap for a while, but the system will
recover in due order.

Which is why, independent of whether we should be setting resource
limits, I think blah has some other problem on his system than just a
memory leak.

@jarviw, I think this would be a different bug. The description here (as

you see improvements during operations?

[Bug 361525] [NEW] [jaunty] GDM remains in English after changing predetermined language

2009-04-15 Thread Ara Pulido
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-selector

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install Jaunty in English
2. On the first boot, install Spanish language support
3. Log out
4. On the login screen, select Spanish. GDM changes properly to English. Once
logged in, it asks if you want Spanish as predetermined. Select YES
5. Desktop is properly in Spanish
6. Reboot the system
7. Login screen is in English (BUG)
8. When you log in, the desktop is properly in Spanish, though.

Expected behaviour: the login screen should be in Spanish after the
reboot of the system, as it was selected as the default language.

** Affects: language-selector (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
