[Bug 318184] Re: xrandr not detecting S-Video connection

2009-04-18 Thread Howard Chu
I have the same behavior on my Asus M6Ne with Mobility 9700 Radeon.
xrandr -q says S-video disconnected even though it's actually connected.
I've tried on both the Intrepid 8.10 LiveCD and a recent Jaunty 9.04
beta.

[Bug 363265] Re: kdenlive crashes with SIGSEV 11 upon starting

2009-04-18 Thread Michael Chalvatzis
Hi Anthony,

thanks for your reply. I'm affraid that I did already everything that you
suggested.
Here is the output of the apt-cache command
~$ apt-cache policy kdenlive
kdenlive:
  Installed: 0.7.3-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 0.7.3-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 0.7.3-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

what I just found out is the following:
I miss the package "frei0r" in my repositories. Is this a mandatory package for
kdenlive?
And why do I miss this package?
I just ran the command suggested on the website
"http://www.kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/pre-compiled-packages/ubuntu-packages":
sudo apt-get install kdenlive dvgrab frei0r swh-plugins libfaad0

and I get the following message:
sudo apt-get install kdenlive dvgrab frei0r swh-plugins libfaad0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
kdenlive is already the newest version.
dvgrab is already the newest version.
Package frei0r is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package frei0r has no installation candidate

What I have installed is the package "frei0r-plugins" !!! Is this the same?
I do not get the package "frei0r" offered.

As I said before I run kubuntu. Can someone confirm that the new package
works with kubuntu?

I attached my sources.list. Maybe I miss an important repository.

Thank you all for your help

[Bug 259757] Re: No shortcut / .desktop file for Hardy installation

2009-04-18 Thread roweezyfosheezy
i can confirm this in: xubuntu-9.04-rc-i386, pessulus version
2.26.0-0ubuntu1 (jaunty)

Pessulus shows as installed in Applications -> Add/Remove, but it isnt
found in any of the menus under Applications. Yes Oliver Grawert, I
checked both the Applications -> System and the Applications -> Settings
menus, and all the others, yet I couldnt find it. It also cant be found
when searching in Application Finder. Thunar doesnt show it at
/usr/share/applications, but Catfish finds it there. The program does
run from Catfish, but clicking Help in bottom-left of Pessulus just
closes Pessulus. The README file says to see HACKING for reporting bugs
for this pkg but i couldnt find that file either. I of course logged out
and restarted several times but still same issue.

** Summary changed:

[Bug 287013] Re: hardy and intrepid beta cause system hang before login screen on ga pcv2

2009-04-18 Thread Geoff K
I also have this problem - I have tested it with two different versions
of the GA-PCV2 motherboard, one with the VIA Samuel 2 800 MHz processor
(GA-PCV2 CSI-SI) and one with the VIA Nehemiah 1.0 GHz processor (GA-
PCV2 DSI-ID). Otherwise, the boards are identical. I successfully
installed 8.10 on the board with the Samuel 2 processor and it works
fine - no issues at all. If I swap the hard drive over to the board with
the Nehemiah processor, it hangs as soon as Xorg starts up. Before that
point, I can call up a command prompt and log in using ctrl-alt-F1. The
Nehemiah based motherboard works fine with a Windows XP install.

It appears that something in Xorg doesn't like the Nehemiah processor.

Also during install, if I press ctrl-alt-F1 and watch the processes as
they start up, it always hangs just before hald completes.

[Bug 363610] Re: dvdstyler unmet (libs and libs-unstripped) dependencies

2009-04-18 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

DVDStyler needs the unstripped version of libavcodec to work correctly
(because of mpeg2 encoding), so the fix you are proposing will let a non
working dvdstyler.

All app that depends on libavcodec52 have been recompiled to also
depends on unstripped (the dependency is generated as libavcodec52 (>=
3:0.svn20090128-1) | libavcodec-unstripped-52 (>= 3:0.svn20090128-1).

If installing dvdstyler uninstall other applications, that because they
hasn't been recompiled properly.

Can you send the output of:
apt-cache policy dvdstyler

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 363611] [NEW] Pulseaudio crackly output and dies frequently

2009-04-18 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Pulseaudio has terrible sound output. It skips and jumps and has a what
the best I can describe as a crackly output. I'm pretty sure that this
is related to the fact the pulseaudio dies every few minutes. I can't
make it though listening to 1 song before it dies. It's also dumping a
lot stuff in the syslog. What seems to be relevant and repeated numerous
times when pulseaudio seems to die is

pulseaudio[11493]: module-alsa-sink.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 40.00 ms
pulseaudio[11493]: module-alsa-source.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 40.00 ms

pulseaudio[11493]: module-alsa-sink.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 160.00 ms

[Bug 363609] [NEW] add sane-backend for canon pixma_imageclass printers..

2009-04-18 Thread badkya
Public bug reported:

Support for Canon Pixma imageclass printers has been addeed to sane-
backend since early/mid 2008. However, there seems to have been no
official sane-backend release since 02/2008. I don't fully understand
the update cycles for sane. Is it possible to include some of the newer
features from sane from a recent CVS snapshot? Or is there a way to coax
a sane-backend 1.0.20 release with pixma_imageclass support?

[Bug 326674] Re: Logitech Quickcam E2500 not supported

2009-04-18 Thread Nhorning
Leann's post makes it clear that there will not be a fix until after
release of Jaunty. The Kernel is in code freeze pending release.
However, the work around posted works fine for me. It's not hard.
simply go here:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.1/

Download the Kernel image for your architecture and install it with the
package installer that will open it automatically. Then Restart.

For me, the New Kernel fixed the camera, but it made some other things a
little funky. So I edited grub so that the 2.6.29.1 kernel was the
second boot option. When I want to use the Camera, I reboot and select
that kernel. That should hold you over until the fix is in.

[Bug 363606] [NEW] thinkfinger authentication not working after upgrade to 9.04

2009-04-18 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thinkfinger-tools

I was able to use my fingerprint reader for logging in to Ubuntu with
version 8.10; however, when upgrading to 9.04 it stopped working. I
checked the pam.d/common-auth (comments removed):

authsufficient pam_thinkfinger.so
authrequiredpam_unix.so try_first_pass nullok_secure
auth[success=1 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass
authrequisite pam_deny.so

from the command line I am able to verify that the fingerprint reader is
working and that it matches my fingerprint; however, even though the
login screen says to type password or use fingerprint, scanning my
finger does not work.

[Bug 316653] Re: nautilus deletes (samba share) file without prompt when a folder of the same name is created

2009-04-18 Thread Justin Lee
1. boot up from livecd which is created from 'ubuntu-9.04-rc-desktop-i386.iso'.
2. run nautilus and go to directory /tmp by input '/tmp' in the location text
box in nautilus window.
3. create a folder 'myshare' in /tmp.
4. right click on 'myshare' and select 'Properties'.
5. go to the tab 'Share' in 'myshare Properties' pop up dialog.
6. check the option 'Share this folder'. when the option is checked, a dialog
'Sharing service is not installed' will appear. click on the 'install service'
button in the dialog and it will start to download and install 'samba' package.
7. when the installation is done, a dialog prompting you to 'Restart your
session' appears. click on the 'Restart session' button in the dialog to
restart the session. however, the session is not restarted after the button is
clicked. i need do it by myself manually.
8. run 'gnome-terminal' and execute

sudo kill -term `pgrep '^Xorg$'`

to restart the session manually. The login screen will show. wait until
timeout in order to login as user 'ubuntu' automatically.
9. run nautilus and go to /tmp.
10. right click on 'myshare', select 'Properties' and go to the 'Share' tab in
the dialog.
11. check options 'Share this folder', 'Allow other people to write in this
folder' and 'Guest access (for people without a user account)' in the 'Share'
tab and click on 'Create Share' button to apply the change.
12. after the 'Create Share' button is clicked, a dialog 'Nautilus needs to add
some permissions to your folder "myshare" in order to share it' appears. click
on the 'Add the permissions automatically' button to add the permissions.
13. open another nautilus window and input 'smb://localhost/myshare' in the
location text box in nautilus window.
14. create a FILE 'mytest' in smb://localhost/myshare (select 'File -> Create
Document -> Empty File' from the menu bar of the nautilus window and rename the
file to 'mytest').
15. create a FOLDER 'mytest' in smb://localhost/myshare (select 'File -> Create
Folder' from the menu bar of the nautilus window and rename the folder to
'mytest'). When the FOLDER 'mytest' is created, the FILE 'mytest' is deleted
without a prompt.

[Bug 363597] [NEW] network manager causes sound/desktop lag

2009-04-18 Thread thebestofall007
Public bug reported:

i have an intermittent problem with laggy sound in ubuntu intrepid ibex
that surfaces when the network manager accesses a wireless network.
what happens is when i try to play a song (any media player) or any
program that deals with audio (alsamixer, etc), the program becomes
laggy, slow, and unresponsive. windows on the desktop are also frozen in
place and i cant drag them to move them or right click. im not sure what
package would be causing this, so i am describing this the best i can.

the problem goes away if i disable networking (and the ability to get on
the 'net altogether).

[Bug 341224] Re: "Window previews" compiz extra plug-in should work for MINIMIZED windows as well

2009-04-18 Thread Erik B. Andersen
This is a known thing that is quite frequently talked about at the Compiz
forums. It is nearly impossible to make a solution for this until X.org
implements input redirection, and that is moving at a glacial rate. Looking at
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showpost.php?p=43093&postcount=2
and
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=2822&highlight=window+previews+minimized+windows
might shed some light as to why. Oh, and Vista's way of handling this is to
take a picture when a window is minimized. You can test this by playing a video
or some other changing application and minimizing it in vista, then looking at
the window preview.

[Bug 362629] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 rc does not boot on k8

2009-04-18 Thread zosX
First of all I apologize if this is posted twice. I responded via e-mail
first and didn't see the response listed on the bug report page so if it
does appear spontaneously from the ethereal void, you'll know why.

I would like to add that I used the daily and got the same result.
Waiting for a while and exiting busybox allowed it to continue to
boot. I should also add that this was installed via wubi on an XP
partition. I know its not related to this bug, but upon installation
it asks to install to a partition and fails to see the virtual
partition that wubi created as it appears to be running off of the
livecd image. It will try to install to any real partition you have.
Not really what you want when you already created a virtual partition.
I remember from before that it would just install by default to the
virtual drive, so I'm thinking that this bug is also affecting the
detection of the fs...

You might want to fix this one before relase.

Search for "kitties" (or anything else, but what else could you want?)
Double-click on the first result (aww...isn't the kitty cute?)
"Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue appears.[1]
Press "Search"

[1]: Full text of "Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue:

The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to
install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for
a plugin that supports the selected file?

The search will also include software which is not officially supported.

##Expected result##

Find the required plugins, list them and prompt me to install them. Warn
me about potential legal issues and if I am accessing previously
disabled repositories. After I confirm, install the plugins, then return
to totem and play the video.

##Actual result##

An error dialogue:

No packages with the requested plugins found

The requested plugins are:

H.264 decoder
MPEG-4 AAC decoder

Press OK. Another error dialogue appears:
An error occurred

The playback of this movie requires the following decoders which are not
installed:

H.264 decoder
MPEG-4 AAC decoder

Double clicking on the video again (or other videos) doesn't search for
plugins again, it just brings up the "An error has occured" dialogue.

##Solution##

After enabling community maintained software through the Add/Remove
Programs or Software Sources dialogues and restarting Totem, the same
"Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue is displayed, but the search
successfully finds the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-
bad packages. After selecting install, the "Confirm installation of
restricted software" dialogue is displayed, then installation proceeds.
After this, the videos play.

Despite saying that "The search will also include software which is not
officially supported." it appears that this does not in fact occur if
the relevant repositories are disabled. This should be fixed.

Please let me know if any further info is required.

It's a libmsn bug. It seems to be fixed in the latest svn version of libmsn,

[Bug 363592] [NEW] for UNR 9.04 RC, sound doesn't work out-of-box on HP 1030nr netbook

2009-04-18 Thread jasonq
Public bug reported:

I installed the UNR 9.04 RC on an HP 1030nr netbook. The good news is
nearly everything works great and I was really impressed with UNR both
functionally and aesthetically. The bad news is that for the HP 1030nr
netbook, the sound did not work out of the box. Basically to fix the
problem I had to compile and use the latest version of ALSA.

To get the sound working, I used the information available on several
bug threads for the HP netbooks.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997590
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=996724
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/57848

However no individual solution worked, and after trying them all several
times and I had given up. I discovered however upon the (strangely, not
the first, but the second) reboot after giving up that the sound was in
fact now working. So *some* combination of recompiling the latest ALSA
drivers (although the utils never completely 100% successfully) and
fiddling with the volume controls as discussed in those threads managed
to solve the problem.

Needless to say, having sound trouble made the release feel very "1999"
for linux. I'm quite experienced with computers and compiling my own
software, so if I had trouble then most people would not be able to fix
it.

Are you bombing out during the install, or are you able to install on this
box, but drop to busybox at boot?

If you're bombing during the install, I found that on the machine where I
was having this problem, installing on less than 4 gig ram got through the
install and the ahci/noacpi hack at boot time got it going. I still see the
Softreset... message in the boot log, but there have been no performance
issues running on a RAID 10.

[Bug 318942] Re: no sound from speakers on HP Mini 1000 (hda-intel, IDT 92HD75B2X5)

2009-04-18 Thread Mark Baas
SW,

I recommend you to stick with the ubuntu kernel. A PPA is always missing
packages like backport-modules, ubuntu-modules etc. So you might get
problems with update processes. Either stick with one kernel or
everytime recompile/install (how i do it). What is the problem with
compiling? To decrease compiling time you can compile for specific cards
only, i always compile for usb and hda-intel only like this:

./configure --with-cards=hda-intel,usb-audio
make
make install

only do that, no external packages etc. Compiling is the cleanest way to
install kernel modules. Your wireless probable didnt work of other
kernel. And Im telling you Ubuntu is not gonne fix this until next
release in half a year.

[Bug 363590] [NEW] apmd causes hd to spindown too soon

2009-04-18 Thread darkraven
Public bug reported:

apmd causes hd to spindown multiple times a minute.

SOLVED.

update /etc/apmd.conf to change TIMEOUT value to 240 (20 minutes). You
can set whatever you like, but ensure you set SOMETHING and uncomment
some other options as well. By default the drive timing is used, which
WILL WEAR OUT your notebook HD eventually. noticed foremost on Jaunty,
as Ibex PPC for this ibook 600 WILL NOT INSTALL or LOAD properly. I
don't know what happened with that release. Apparently it was never
finished for the PPC. Possible issue with x86 as well.

Hm, there might still be an issue regarding persistence. I used
4/19/2009's "Jaunty-desktop-i386" build but even though I asked the usb-

persistent.

So the new x86 build is now confirmed to create a working live usb, but

[Bug 285392] Re: Softreset failed (device not ready)

2009-04-18 Thread rjr162
I am also getting this error out of no where. I upgraded the guts of an
old computer I had, keeping only the case.

it has dual channel 2 x 2GB DDR2 OCZ ram, LiteON dvd+/-RW drive, Seagate
1.5TB SATA II hard drive, a Linksys WMP110 PCI card, and an Asus M4A78-E
motherboard using the onboard HDMI for video out to TV with a Phenom II
X4 3.0GB proc.

Everything started out fine, except I couldn't get get the audio out via
the HDMI in 8.10 or 9.04, so I stuck XP on for the mean time. I noticed
XP was locking up every now and then, and then it was locking up like
crazy.

I went to put 8.10 back on, but using two different DVD drives, moving
the HD to a different SATA port, and trying SATA/IDE mode, RAID (in RAID
READY mode), and AHCI mode. They all are comming up "Softreset failed
(device not ready)".

I'd love to figure this out, as on a semi-related note my fiancées dad's
Athlon64 X2 with a SATA II HD running XP is doing the same random lock-
ups, even after everything had been changed except the hard drive. I'm
wondering if a flaw/bug in SATA II or NCQ is popping up

[Bug 318942] Re: no sound from speakers on HP Mini 1000 (hda-intel, IDT 92HD75B2X5)

2009-04-18 Thread Shaved Wookie
Thanks Mark,

I have an exceptional track record of breaking more things thank I fix
when compiling. Does anyone know of a compile-free way to get the
correct Kernel and ALSA (PPA? Deb's? Repo?)
