[Bug 295945] Re: k3b 1.0.5 (using kde 3.5.10) fails to verify

2009-05-04 Thread Ari
This happens to me with 9.04 / amd64; but in my case k3b seems to hang.
Seems to be 100% reproducible when burning data dvds. Quite annoying. I
remember having the same problem with 8.10. In the olde time of breezy this
used to work.

[Bug 372004] [NEW] 1080i Video Performance Problem on 9.04 with Intel Graphics

2009-05-04 Thread km
Public bug reported:

I have 3 machines with Intel graphics. Each played HD video including 1080i
(the most challenging) well on 8.10.
On 9.04 they are all jumpy. This is independent of the media player (vlc,
mythtv, mplayer, totem). It is well known that on this generation of chips
(Intel 915, 945, 852 ..), the Xvideo extension works best with the Overlay
Video (rather than textured).

xvinfo shows that I am using Overlay on 9.04 as I did on 8.10.

I also tried reverting to the 2.4 Intel driver as in

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

and that did not help. Most of the people reporting relief on that page
refer to issues involving graphics, not HD video.

Note, I do not have compoz turned on. Another clue is that Xorg shows a
high cpu utilization, higher than than the media player itslef.

[Bug 74179] Re: Ubuntu kernel doesn't support >=4GB memory

2009-05-04 Thread apjjr
I've just installed a Intel DG35EC motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
3GHz processor and 4GB RAM now running Linux las 2.6.28-11-server #42-Ubuntu
SMP Fri Apr 17 02:48:10 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux.
I was puzzled by the fact that only 3GB of memory was usable with the desktop
9.04 system. I "googled" and found this page. I also found the page at
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-linux-4gb-ram-limitation-solution/. After
a little more reading, I followed the instructions on the cyberciti.biz site.
Installing the server kernel worked for me.

~$ free -m
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 4015396 3619 0 15132
-/+ buffers/cache:248 3767
Swap: 3867 0 3867

I'm too new at this to understand any caveats of using the server kernel on a
desktop system, but I'm happy that I can utilize all of the memory that I paid
for. I will be using this system for testing VMware and Virtualbox to try to
get sco openserver 5.0.6 to run on newer hardware(wish me luck).
This should be fixed for the desktop install, as well. I'm just glad I could
find a fix on the net and the server kernel works!

I'm at a loss. Anybody who has a bright idea will become my new best

web functionality, and I just generally feel like a lame-o.

Cheers,

[Bug 240761] Re: ** (padevchooser:9053): WARNING **: pa_browser_new() failed.

2009-05-04 Thread Pablo Di Noto
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 107791 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107791

Hello,

padevchooser is refusing to start because it relies on Avahi to provide
some network services discovery.

The reason Avahi is not working is explained here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/327362

But the short answer is:

# vi /etc/default/avahi-daemon

make sure the line that reads
AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=1
becomes
AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0

This change avoids a check done at boot which prevents Avahi from running. For
immediate pleasure, do
# /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start

which should start the service without any error. Once Avahi is working,
PulseAudio will work as expected.
This last statement is no longer necessary, as the Avahi will now start on each
reboot.

Thanks everybody for your work!
///Pablo

[Bug 254603] Re: AC adapter status don't change when unpluged it

2009-05-04 Thread Alex Midgley
This bug seems to have moved into acpi in Jaunty. I have a Sony Vaio
VGN-CR520E, and the above fix corrected the hal problem in Intrepid.
However, now even acpi is always reporting that the AC adapter is
plugged in.

acpi -V (plugged in)
 Battery 0: Charging, 81%, 04:06:26 until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 53280 mAh, last full capacity 50890 mAh = 95%
  AC Adapter 0: on-line
 Thermal 0: ok, 47.0 degrees C
 Cooling 0: LCD 0 of 8
 Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
 Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10

acpi -V (unplugged)
 Battery 0: Discharging, 81%, 02:16:47 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 53280 mAh, last full capacity 50890 mAh = 95%
  AC Adapter 0: on-line
 Thermal 0: ok, 47.0 degrees C
 Cooling 0: LCD 0 of 8
 Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
 Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10

It detects that the battery is discharging, but not that the AC adapter
is off-line.

[Bug 289338] Re: Extreme memory usage by kio_thumbnail

2009-05-04 Thread dwchapin
This is most definitely still a problem, even in a new Jaunty install.
It is particularly pronounced with directories of multipage tiff files.
kio_thumbnail processes get launched until all available memory is
exhausted, swapping out the entire system until nothing works. Before
the system freezes up completely I counted 6 instances of kio_thumbnail
at ~200MB each on a 1G memory box.

[Bug 367774] Re: EDAC spam in dmesg, edac-utils shows no erros

2009-05-04 Thread mjames
Yeah, I think they are somewhat different.

I tried the edac file that you suggested, but it didn't have a
noticeable effect. I am getting the log messages ending in "x38 UE" that
Tobatus gave above, rather than ones like yours, so I tried "alias
x38_edac off", but that also had no effect.

I actually have very little clue about how the edac system works or how
to configure it, but I'm willing to help test any ideas here on this
end.

2009-05-04 Thread Christoph Dwertmann
I've got three Intel CPU machines here, all running Jaunty with kernel

find: `/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq': No such file or directory

On the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz (Dual Core Laptop) I get:

Changing the output device in System > Prefrence > Sound to "USB
Speakers (ALSA)" redirects all streams to the usb headset except
  firefox/flash.

A manual non-persistent workaround for this is explained in Answer #56282
pavucontrol is needed (not included) to have sound output directed from
firefox to the USB headset, otherwise built in speakers are used. Also, There
has to be a stream (an instance of a program with audio output) running to
redirect it to the speakers.

[Bug 371993] [NEW] USB Headset - unexpected behavior when unplug, plug in

2009-05-04 Thread David Bensimon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

USB Speakers: ID 046d:0a0b Logitech, Inc.
Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Firefox 3.0.10
Flash 10.0.22.87
pavucontrol 0.9.7-1ubuntu3

Plugging in USB headset, setting it up in pavucontrol, then unplugging
and plugging it back in there is unexpected behavior.

Volume is reset to 0 (settings are not persistent).

** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

[Bug 371994] [NEW] Firefox runing flash video does not ouput audio to USB Headset

2009-05-04 Thread David Bensimon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

USB Speakers: 046d:0a0b Logitech, Inc.
Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Firefox 3.0.10
Flash 10.0.22.87
pavucontrol 0.9.7-1ubuntu3

Plugging in USB headset, there is unexpected behavior.

Changing the output device in System > Prefrence > Sound to "USB
Speakers (ALSA)" redirects all streams to the usb headset except
firefox/flash.

A manual non-persistent workaround for this is explained in Answer #56282
pavucontrol is needed (not included) to have sound output directed from firefox
to the USB headset, otherwise built in speakers are used. Also, There has to be
a stream (an instance of a program with audio output) running to redirect it to
the speakers.

[Bug 371759] Re: Super zoom out on use of index

2009-05-04 Thread Bob Appleyard
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evince

This looks like it's a regression of #49340, but it could be a different
bug. Given the example pdf on Jaunty, evince will zoom out to ridiculous
levels (claiming it to be 50%) every time one clicks on the index.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Open the provided pdf.
+ 2. Arrange it so that the index is visible in the side pane (selecting it
from the relevant drop-down box).
+ 3. Click any of the items in the index.
+
+ The desired outcome is that it remains at the level of zoom. The
+ observed outcome here is that evince zooms out enormously.
+
+ I don't know how many documents are affected by this. I'll try checking
+ out some of the attached files in #49340

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 326609] Re: [MASTER] No flash in firefox after upgrade from intrepid to jaunty

2009-05-04 Thread Tom Smythe
Thanks KFX,

I tried the sequence you suggested. Now Adobe's tester says that I have
the latest installed. Pandora works!! Some other sites say that I need
the latest Flash Player. I am still getting a bad sound, somewhere
between a sWWsh and a swWCk sound whenever I enter a site that has Flash
Content though not necessarily just sites with flash content. (Does
this site have flash content? It happens here.)

Problem partly solved.
Still in need of further suggestions, ideas, help.

thanks, again.
Tom

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-05-04 Thread Paulo J. S. Silva
wb_guy,

I believe there that main use of the notification area is to keep
"minimized applications" that may allow some kind of interaction without
opening a full blown window: a media player that allows you to skip the
current music or pause, network manager that allow you to turn off the
network, bring up an interface or change the wi-fi spot, and so on. In
this sense the name "notification area" is not really good. In your
reasoning you forgot this use of the application area, and in my current
system all applications I have there allow me to take such simple
actions directly from the embed icons.

However notifications are not something that you want interact with.
They are just something that you should be aware of. However, some
notifications are necessarily transient (the screen brightness was
changed to save energy, or the network is up). They can be shown using
the new, and beautiful, notification bubbles. Other notifications may be
queued to dispatch further action (such as reading emails, reading RSS
feeds, or updating the system). In this case the action is simple: open
the full blown application. For emails, open the MUA window, for RSS
feeds open liferea (or you preferred feed reader), for IM messages open
the chat application, for upgrades open update-manager. You should keep
such notifications somewhere, in this case I believe the right place is
the indicator-applet, that allow you to see them and quickly open the
right application.

I do believe that the icon for the indicator-applet should change from
the envelope to something more neutral (like the i letter in the
official icon). It would also be nice to have different icons for
different cases (for example no notification in the queue, some
notifications in the queue, and urgent notifications - like system
upgrades - in the queue).

installed some driversusing envyNG and now I dont get the message when I boot
(it used to give me a message telling me to select my monitor and video card)
but I still have the problem. Only 640*480 and below to select.

[Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 -> 1.6) and saves just vanish

2009-05-04 Thread Gergely Máté
OK, so saved games did not really vanish, but are unusable with Jaunty's
version of Wesnoth - and you want to continue the campaign you already
played a lot. If this is the situation, you have some resources at your
hand, and you are not afraid of the Terminal, keep reading. ;-)

If you want to play Wesnoth the way you did played in Intrepid, you need
Intrepid. Fortunately, you can have Intrepid and Jaunty on your computer
at the same time. The solution is called virtualization, and the tool I
just used continue my campaign is VirtualBox Open Source Edition.

These are the steps to play :-) :
1. install virtualbox-ose
2. Start VirtualBox and configure a new virtual machine. I gave it a hard drive
of 8 Gigs, and an Intrepid LiveCD iso as CD-ROM. Also don't forget to enable
audio among the settings (my choice was PulseAudio).
3. Start the new virtual machine. The livecd boots, and you can install
Intrepid onto the newly created virtual hard disk.
4. Than, in your Intrepid virtual machine:
1. Install roughly the following packages :
wesnoth
dkms
It took me about 90 minutes to reach this state. In theory, here you can start
Wesnoth, but the display resolution may be to low to enjoy it. So here comes
the harder stuff - and the Terminal. You will have to tell your virtual
Intrepid that it is running in a virtualized environment to be able to change
display resolution. dkms was required to make that easier.

2. From the tools menu of your VirtualBox window that displays your
Intrepid, select "Install Guest Additions". This will download a 18megs ISO
file and mount it. Still in your Intrepid virtual machine, start up a terminal,
and navigate to the mount point of the downloaded ISO file (it was
/media/cdrom0 for me). There enter:
> ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
After this, you have to configure your virtual Intrepid's X server. So edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf like this:
in Section "Device" set:
 Driver"vboxvideo"
in Section "InputDevice" set
 Driver"vboxmouse"
There should be NO "alwayscore" or "sendcoreevents" anywhere in your
virtualized xorg.conf file.
After the change, you have to restart the X server in your Intrepid. Simply
logging out and back again probably solves this. Here, if you try to resize
your VirtualBox window, and the Intrepid desktop resizes with it, than you are
almost done. In case of problems, you still can ask for help :-).

  3. Now you have Intrepid, Wesnoth, and can resize your display. The last
thing to do is to copy your old, well played .wesnoth directory to this newly
created virtual system. Simply copy .wesnoth from your non-virtualized home
directory to the home directory on Intrepid - overwrite the .wesnoth dir that
came with installing Wesnoth to the new system. Every setup information and
every save game for Wesnoth is in the .wesnoth directory.
In fact, I was unable to transfer data directly to the virtual machine. So I
sent it to the Internet, and downloaded it from inside my Intrepid VM.

With the .wesnoth directory in place, the last thing to do is go
fullscreen with the VM, and launch Wesnoth. Voilá! It works. It is quite
playable on my 1.6 Ghz Celeron (I have 1GB ram, that's needed, as I gave
the Intrepid virtual machine 400MB). The whole process of setting this
up probably can be done in about 2-5 hours depending on computer speed
and network connection. Disk space consumed: 9GB. Network traffic: ~1GB.

If you try this, and have problems, let me know. If you have success,
let me know that also ;-) !

[Bug 367279] Re: firefox crash while using moonlight

2009-05-04 Thread directhex
Yes, deleting that file is enough.

Can you follow the instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs#Crashes to obtain a backtrace?
You'll want the libmoon-dbgsym, moonlight-plugin-core-dbgsym and
moonlight-plugin-mozilla-dbgsym packages as well as those named. I can
then present the info to upstream, who can help find a fix
