Oh cop on. *You* provided the info. It would have been proper for
*you* to verify that what you're posting is actually useful and
doesn't contain erroneous characters. It ain't rocket science. I
checked the characters you provided and detected that they were wrong;
you ought to have done just that, *before posting them*. But hey, we
all make mistakes, so it's entirely understandable and forgivable --
just don't be defensive about your little screw-up.

My suggestion is that you're more diligent next time and don't try to
pass the buck and blame for your mistakes to others.

[Bug 373472] [NEW] Danish keyboard spacebar types non-breaking spaces

2009-05-07 Thread Uwe Manuel Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 9.04 I use several keyboard layouts, but have a problem with
the Danish layout.

When typing in the Danish keyboard layout I discovered that the space
bar, instead of making spaces, it is making non-breaking spaces or
something like that. At any rate, it messes up the formatting making
words stick together on a new line when typing in tekst in a webform.

When I switch keyboard layout (for example the Canadian Multilingual or
French) I can delete the spaces made with the Danish keyboard and retype
with the French or Canadian keyboard and everything is fine. So this
problem is related to the spacebar of the Danish keyboard in 9.04. I
did not have this problem in 8.10.

Attached is a screenshot showing how a typed line with the Danish keyboard layout does not wrap over to line 2 but
continues, and having a need for scroll bars.

Maybe this is a problem not with the Danish layout, but when switching
layouts. When setting the DAnish keyboard as default, I seem not to have
this problem.

[Bug 373475] [NEW] FGLRX unusable with an ATI Mobility Card

2009-05-07 Thread Oliver
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

I'm using a ATI Radeon Mobility 3650HD together with the fglrx driver
and a Intel mainboard chipset. But this is sometimes unusable for me.

If I work with an application I've got black bars on the screen. Or
sometimes the system freeze after 3-4 hours. And the swichting between
different windows will take a lot of time (with and without compiz)

If I use Compiz, my system freeze latest after 1 hour. My system is lot
of more slowler as without Compiz. Sometimes it's very funny because the
Xserver will try to build 2 screens on one display. I must make a
hardcore reset every time (Strg+Alt+F2 and sudo reboot not possible for
me).

I've token the new 2.8.602 from the ppa but there is no changes for me.

If you need some more infos or log files let me know. I will try to help
you.

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Which
versions of Firefox and flash are you using, have you tried with the
latest? Is this a problem in Jaunty 9.04? This sounds like flash hasn't
installed properly, therefore please try installing flashplugin-nonfree

[Bug 373435] Re: Authentication hangs for 30 sec on upgraded Ubuntu 9.04 due to krb5 placed in auth stack

2009-05-07 Thread Mikhail Belov
** Summary changed:

- Login from screen saver lock hangs for 30 sec on upgraded Ubuntu 9.04
+ Authentication hangs for 30 sec on upgraded Ubuntu 9.04 due to krb5 placed in
auth stack

** Description changed:

- Hardware: Samsung NC-10 netbook
+ Hardware: Samsung NC-10 netbook, 2GB memory upgrade

- OS: Ubuntu 9.04 upgraded from 8.10 via update manager (via internet)
+ OS: Dual boot
+ OS-1: Ubuntu 9.04 upgraded from 8.10 via update manager (via internet)
+ OS-2: Windows XP Pro SP3 in a separate partition.

- Symptoms: After screen saver with screen lock activates, unlocking via
password dialog takes approximately 30 sec (after typing password and clicking
enter the dialog displays "Checking..." for appr 30 sec and then screen
unlocks).
+ Symptoms:
+ After upgrade any action that required authentication of my account
(uid=1000) takes approximately 30 sec to complete.
The problem appeared after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04.

- Additional note: the initial login after reboot also takes longer than
- before (in 8.10) but not as long as with screen saver unlock.
+ Cause:
+ After research it appeared that the problem is related to the pam_krb5.so
module placed on top of the auth stack in /etc/pam.d/common-auth for users with
uid>=1000 (i.e. regular interactive users). Commenting the line fixed the
problem instantly.
+
+ Question:
+ Now, the question is why did updater placed that line in there? On other
machines that updated from 8.10 to 9.04 the auth stack consisted just of
pam_unix.so. Note that on mine pam_unix.so was #2 (after pam_krb5.so), but then
#3 was pam_ldap.so - which is also absent on other upgraded machines. Would
appreciate any insights on this. Thank you.

If it does, can you include the following files:

Also try to see if the bug happens with the default settings. To get the

[Bug 366222] Re: kubuntu jaunty hangs completely while using mouse

2009-05-07 Thread merkri
I thought I'd post here because, although there are other bug reports of
freezes upon upgrading to Jaunty, this one sounds very similar to what
I'm seeing.

Basically, I ran KDE on Kubuntu Intrepid more or less without any
freezes, installed Jaunty RC without any apparent freezes (but didn't
use it very long before upgrading). I upgraded to Jaunty final about two
days ago, and all of a sudden today the system started hanging.

The first thing I noticed is that mouse clicks weren't responding and I
started having problems with mouse focus (e.g., I would click on the
foreground window and it would switch to a background window). The
keyboard seemed to respond fine, however.

At first it involved only a couple of windows, but eventually it
happened to all of the windows and I couldn't do anything and had to
reboot.

Since, then, though, KDE is essentially unusable, with the same pattern
ever since. It boots and loads KDE, and everything seems fine initially.
The taskbar responds (e.g., it will minimize appropriately and appear
with mouseover), but when I go to the KDE startmenu, applications won't
open, and a terminal session manager plasmoid I have won't respond. I
can open Firefox and Dolphin, but eventually I start having the same
mouse problems with those applications, and the taskbar won't respond
anymore.

I can get into a shell with CTRL+ALT+F1 as described above, but that's
about it.

I've tried apt-get upgrade and everything seems upgradable.

The mouse is a USB mouse with Intel USB interface on the mobo.

It's a Dell XPS 420 system, Intel quad-Core2 Extreme processor 3GHz
1333FSB12MB

[Bug 373288] Re: looks like WIN98, Can't change it

I think this may be related to DPI, if so there is already a bug filed
about that issue. If you set the DPI back to 96 under
System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts->Details, does the problem go
away?

[Bug 373465] [NEW] screen resolution won't lower after full screen with firefox

2009-05-07 Thread Jack67
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When ever i 'm in 1280 X 720 (HDMI) resolution, and use Firefox,
everything is fine, i can go full screen (f11), close firefox (when in
full screen) and then change resolution to a higher resolution(1680 x
1080), everything is fine, but if i'm in high resolution 1680x1080 and
go full screen (f11) or expend the window (little square top right
corner) and close Firefox like that(using the X) then even if i reboot
or do a reconfigure of the X server, it's impossible to get back to
1280x720.

To regain lower resolution i have to open Firefox, go full screen (F11),
click on the square in top right corner and resize the window small
enough to use only 25% of the screen, then close Firefox, and then i can
change the resolution. and everything is fine.

Note: I do not get any error message when changing the resolution, it
simply goes black and then comes back to what ever it was asking if i
want to keep resolution.

logistic:
1280 x 720 > Firefox full screen > close or change resolution to > 1680 x 1080
= O.K.
1680 x 1080 > Firefox full screen > close and/or change resolution to 1280 x
720 =BAD, reboot, system reconfigure x server stuck in 1680 x 1080

1680 x 1080 > Firefox full screen > resize window to 1/4 screen > close
and/or change resolution to 1280 x 720 = O.K.

[Bug 292549] Re: [i945GME] black screen when going full screen

2009-05-07 Thread Bryce Harrington
There's been a bunch of changes to -intel since your last comment -
would you please test to see if this is still an issue in the released
Jaunty with all updates, and if so, also test if the 2.7.0 driver
resolves it:

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

If you can reproduce the issue even with all this, the next thing to do
would be to collect register dumps before and after the issue.
intel_reg_dumper in Intrepid and newer versions of Ubuntu can be used to
get a register dump. It is provided by the -intel driver's debug
package:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg

run twice, once for when you have a good working screen (with either
-intel or -vesa, any resolution), and once in the broken case:

intel_reg_dumper > regdump_good.txt

intel_reg_dumper > regdump_broke.txt

In the broken case, you may need to run it from the console or from an
external ssh session.

[Bug 293041] Re: [i945] D945GCLF & Panasonic TV - X resolution too high resulting in black TV screen

2009-05-07 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Neil,

Have you had a chance to test this against the Jaunty release?

It sounds like the issue is a monitor capabilities-detection issue
rather than a bug in -intel itself (so I'm reassigning), however a newer
version of that driver is available at this PPA:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

Meanwhile, you can capture a dump of what X is parsing for EDID via this
command (which requires X be running, but you can run it from a vt
console): 'DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --verbose' - this info will be useful in
case the monitor has to be quirked.

Also run 'sudo ddcprobe > ddcprobe.txt' to get the DDC info, which may
be what X is using instead of EDID.

The output of 'lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.txt' could also be useful.

For more info on analyzing this type of problem, please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Resolution

I don't think that this bug is a duplicate. This card ist the dvb-c version
which has different hardware and driver. The bugs are only releated because
both cards are manufactured by Terratec...
Searching for the card got me to
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TerraTec_Cinergy_C_DVB-C
There already seems to be a patch in the s2-liplianin repository of linuxtv.

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd

2009-05-07 Thread Gordon Fick
Thank you, Alexandre
I had the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 8100. With a fresh install of
9.04, Data CDs and DVDs played fine but Audio CDs hung my machine. Seeing the
issue was related to Brasero, I uninstalled Brasero and deleted all sundry
files connected to Brasero.
Now the DVD drive recognizes Audio CDs and all is well again. For CD burning, I
have had success using X-CD-roast for several years. I think I will stay away

2009-05-07 Thread Geir Ove Myhr

* For identifying your exact hardware, the output of `lspci -vvnn` is necessary.
* Since this may be a modesetting problem, please add the line
  Option "ModeDebug" "true"
to the "Device" section of your xorg.conf and upload the Xorg.0.log you get
with that option enabled, since this will give more detailed information about
what is going on.
* The output of `xrandr --verbose`. I'm not sure it's required here, but it may
give some useful information.

Re: [Bug 303601] Re: REISUB is broken

How exactly are you able to verify that when you received the information
from a website that undoubtedly modified the input it was given to be
correctly represented internally, and then transmitted to be displayed on an
unknown browser that operates on an unknown operating system?

My suggestion is that a user types the xorg.conf information into xorg.conf
manually. its only a few lines, and alleviates any issue with correct type
settings.

[Bug 309163] Re: Open File dialog fails with inexplicable "Please select a file to open" error

2009-05-07 Thread bruce
I have also encountered precisely this problem with Nedit in 8.10. What
is particularly vexing is that the problem manifests in different ways
in different contexts. Sometimes the Open dialog does seem to work
correctly, sometimes it gets caught in the "Please select a file" loop,
sometimes the dialog opens blank, with no files or directories listed so
one can't even get to the selection action. Always, it seems to issue
some sort of cryptic Motif (?) complaint about Class:XmTextField and
"Character '\...' ... not supported font." When it has worked correctly,
it has been on occasions when it was launched from a panel icon and not
by command line in a terminal, though it does not ALWAYS work when
launched from the panel. It does always (so far) allow selection of
files from the "Open previous" dialog, however. With that, I have been
able to limp along.

Without a workaround that is functional consistently from from one
machine boot-up to the next, from one usage context to the next, Nedit
is really not very usable. Given that Nedit is an top-notch editor for
people working with text files, and that it has been absolutely reliable
on multiple architectures for many years in my experience, this bug in
Ubuntu 8.10 is very disappointing.

[Bug 373281] Re: Xorg Cannot Determine Monitor Resolution on Bootup in Jaunty

2009-05-07 Thread Doc Kinne
Martin, upon getting home I did get and boot the machine with the Jaunty
Live CD. It displayed the same lack of functionality with regard to xorg
that the actual install did (so at least we have some sort of
consistancy!).

Unfortunately...

>Please boot the jaunty live cd and after X failed to start, run:
>apport-collect 373281
>on that machine.

Executing this command resulted in:

"Please install the package 'python-launchpadlib'"

I don't this this is what you were looking for. :-(

Obviously I can't install the package via the LiveCD environment
(although I did try!).

I am going to move forward with the upgrade path to 9.04. If the upgrade
path gives me the same result (and I think it will), I'll post the data
at that point.

Also, where is the failsafe xorg tarball?

[Bug 279011] Re: [g45] virtual consoles not shown, Intel G45

2009-05-07 Thread J Mark Deric
I am new to launchpad; please forgive me if I'm not following the right
protocol, but I think this is the best way for me to get some help. The
nasty bit: I'm using the CentOS 5.3 distro. The good bit: you have
found and fixed the exact bug I'm having w/Intel DG45ID mobo w/G45 and
Samsung SyncMaster226BW. Virtual consoles don't work, ctrl-alt-F?, but
then F& and it comes back. Get an initial 80x40 login then startx
screen at boot; when I log out of X, get the dark screen "Not optimum
mode..." but blind startx works.

Does anyone know the CentOS/RHEL 5.3 package corresponding to xserver-
xorg-video-intel? Or how I might take the info from here back to the
CentOS folks?

Thanks.

[Bug 202952] Re: Add native ZFS to Ubuntu

2009-05-07 Thread mobrien118
I got a taste of ZFS with Solaris and PC-BSD, and I must say, I can't
get that taste out of my mouth!

While I found PC-BSD, as a whole, to be relatively immature as a usable
desktop OS (a great effort, though, not quite there yet), and
OpenSolaris to be the same, only with surprising less ZFS capability
using the native installer, the BEST thing about using both of these
OSes was getting to try out ZFS. It is AWESOME! But, I guess htat's why
this bug exists.

So, I guess there are a few options, all of which will take a lot of
time and effort.

1. Somehow make GPL and CDDL work together (not likely).

2. Create your own implementation of ZFS written under the GPLvX...This
may have legal ramifications of its own, since maybe this would violate
patents in the ZFS specification?

3. Create a similar, competing FS that can do all, most, or more of the
COOL things ZFS can, but designed and created under a GPL friendly
license.

>From what I remember, there are some file systems currently in
development or some level of release that have goals similar to ZFS, but
without corporate support (like Sun backing ZFS). I doubt they will ever
be ready before something better exists (maybe options 1 or 2). I could
be wrong, though.

So, it looks like a pretty "not so good" for this happening, but I
support this "bug"(/feature) request, and I admire its similarity to bug
#1 (If you don't know what that is, please look it up!)

Also, what about the license compatibility of having NTFS drivers
running on the linux kernel? Surely, if that can be accomplished, they
can make a driver fore ZFS. And the point about NVidia drivers, surely
their license is more restrictive than the CDDL.

Just my thoughts in support of solving this bug ;-)

Cheers,

[Bug 370834] Re: kde apps don't refresh (update the screen) properly with compiz

2009-05-07 Thread Allan Douglas R. de Oliveira
I have the exactly same problem (refresh issues using compiz with some kde
apps). I'll post more information soon. Some data for now:
$ dpkg -s compiz|grep Ver
Version: 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu8
$ dpkg -s okular|grep Ver
Version: 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2
$ dpkg -s nvidia-glx-180|grep Ver
Version: 180.44-0ubuntu1
Using an NVIDIA 8400M GS card

I suspect it happens with non kde apps too, but I'll check this
information better.

[Bug 373456] [NEW] Missing gridengine MCA ras

2009-05-07 Thread blucini
Public bug reported:

According to this FAQ

http://www.open-mpi.org/faq/?category=building#build-rte-sge

with version 1.3 the compatibility with gridengine is not built-in
automatically, but must be requested, by passing the option --with-sge
to the configure script. Given the modularity of openmpi, this should
not be a problem. It can be achieved by changing the rules file:

COMMON_CONFIG_PARAMS = \
$(CROSS)\
--prefix=/usr \
--mandir=\$${prefix}/share/man \
--infodir=\$${prefix}/share/info\
--sysconfdir=/etc/openmpi \
--libdir=\$${prefix}/lib/openmpi/lib\
--includedir=\$${prefix}/lib/openmpi/include\
--with-devel-headers \
--with-sge

(I added the last line).

This bug would allow the end user to build a gridengine + openmpi based
cluster without recompiling openmpi.

[Bug 252079] Re: firefox locks up when trying to print, print page opens but is blank,

2009-05-07 Thread abePdIta
Sorry, I have to add some (new) information:
I strongly believe that, at least in my case, the problem is due to
not-accessible network printers.
More precisely, if the dialog box tries to display information on a
not-reachable printer, the program freezes for several seconds.
This is true even if the dialog was already open and you click on such a
printer.
On the other hand, if the window opens with "print to file" as the default
printer, the program is not blocked.

However, after some testing, I encountered the same problem with other
software: I tried Epiphany, Gedit and Geany.

Other users affected by this issue can confirm this?
Otherwise we have different bugs.

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Which

It could be that your USB subsystem takes more than 25 seconds to come
up, which would explain why it works for me and not for you. But I
don't know. I did say it was a nasty hack. :-)

The above is slightly bad information because it's copied and pasted
from or via some program that "prettified" the quotation marks (maybe
MS Word). To work in xorg.conf however, the quotation marks need to be
