Hi mterry,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've
made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[Bug 367409] Re: Bad support for ATI RS690 / X1200 graphics card

2009-06-08 Thread Hadmut Danisch
xorg.conf:

I've tried different drivers, such as radeonhd and fglrx.

I've forced the resolution into 1440x900, since the computer is
connected via HDMI to a flat panel TV, which has a physical resolution
of 1440x900, but always lists these resolutions for multimedia
compatibility:

% xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1050
default connected 1680x1050+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1680x1050 60.0*
   1400x1050 60.0
   1280x1024 60.0
   1440x900 60.0
   1280x960 60.0
   1360x768 60.0
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.0 56.0
   640x48060.0

which makes xorg choose a wrong resolution (being interpolated) by the
TV.

[Bug 384236] Re: Please, merge dbg packages into one

2009-06-08 Thread Didier Roche
Done. I must admit that I do not really understand why "Provides" is
needed:

- Conflicts/Replaces will handle the transition, uninstalling the two
binary packages (python-gnomecanvas-dbg and python-gconf-dbg)

- if we look at their reverse depends:
$ apt-cache rdepends python-gnomecanvas-dbg python-gconf-dbg
python-gnomecanvas-dbg
Reverse Depends:
  python-gnomecanvas
  python-gnome2-dbg
python-gconf-dbg
Reverse Depends:
  python-gnome2-dbg
  python-gconf

So, all rdepends are in the same source package, removing the
dependency. Is that only for apt-get/aptitude transitionning (that is to
say, he might, depending on which order he process the packages,
uninstalling old python-gnomecanvas because of missing dependency
without seing that new python-gnomecanvas not depends on it?)

BTW, change available in the bzr branch.

[Bug 383008] Re: cierre inesperado al cargar 2 paginas

2009-06-08 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 378818] Re: Mouse stopped working after upgrade to Karmic

2009-06-08 Thread Marques Johansson
I switched back to the previous kernel where the mouse was working and
that did fix the problem. I also tried the xorg.conf generated by xorg
-configure (which tries the "mouse" driver instead of evdev) and
installed the xorg-input-driver-mouse package and set AllowEmptyInput to
true in ServerLayout. That didn't help either. For now I have to use
keyboard as mouse..

I've also tried gpm and it doesn't appear to be working. Maybe
something udev or hal related? Nor does "cat /dev/input/mice" which in
the past has shown data/junk when you move the mouse.

[Bug 236602] Re: No applications available for photo editing if Gnome is not installed

2009-06-08 Thread Harald Sitter
All very confusing and certainly requires investigation.

First of all I cannot imagine that KDE got a quite well working component to
implement the desktop-enty-spec (namely kbuildsycoca4) and GNOME depends on
update-desktop-database only. The mentioned spec does not even enforce a policy
were every package that comes with a destkop file needs to invoke said command.
So, considering a 3rd party developer deploys an application with desktop file
and doesn't know that he should call update-desktop-database (Since it is not
mentioned in the spec) GNOME would never know about his application.
Comparing that to the automated scans of kbuildsycoca4 (to find new desktop
files) and its inode notification registration (to get notified about updated
desktop files) makes GNOME appear in a rather bad light TBH. So, someone who
knows his way through GNOME would be very welcome to explain if this is really
the way GNOME does things.

Anyway, as for the fix for GNOME applications. No, we should not open
bugs against gimp and friends. Because:

Technically the desktop-entry-spec suggest a two way communication module.
First you have the parsing component that interacts with the desktop files and
the mime cache to build a list of applications etc. and on the other side you
have the output component that provides the necessary information to the
application.
Assuming that no one would be developing GNOME applications if they had to
implement the output component into every application rather than one libary
(update-desktop-database creates just the database, but still somehow this
database needs to be accessed and processed so that its information can be used
within the actual application), there must be some GNOME library that handles
the interaction with the application. And this library should depend on
desktop-file-utils.
Because what use does the library have if you don't have a database it can read
from? ... clearly a case of Dependency ;-)

That is however only an assumption.

I have filed a different bug (bug #384884) that might be a duplicate of
this one.

However, the main difference is that my system unfreezes after 5 to 15
minutes or ugly freezing. It looks like a lockup though.

I would like to know if anybody can test this and see if your system
unfreeze too.

Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are

[Bug 384891] [NEW] Contact list freezes making you think you are online, but not

2009-06-08 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

1) Kubuntu 9.04
2) kopete 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2
3a) Give updated contact list and remain online
3b) OR hide all contact list and show that im offline
4) Contact list 'freezes' showing outdated contacts after an unknown amount of
time. So contacts that have been long gone and offline will remain shown during
this 'freeze'. Furthermore, during this freeze, you are actually offline.

This problem seems to occur only on MSN.

[Bug 355155] Re: Clocksource tsc unstable leads to lockups in Ubuntu Jaunty

2009-06-08 Thread GeekBoi
I to am running into this issue. The application that seems to be the
main culprit for me seems to be OpenOffice Calc. I have upgraded to OOo
3.1 from a PPD I found in the forums in an attempt to resolve the
problem. It did not. When I run it I can almost count on the machine
locking up within an hour. The kernel and network stack seem to remain
up as I can usually ssh in and get a clean reboot when I have another
machine to do so from.

My machine is an HP EliteBook 6930p. I am running 9.04 64 installed
from the alternate install with LVM partitions for /usr and /home. I
have installed the ATI binary drivers.

I have attached the output of lspci -vvv.

I too would like to know why this has not been given any kind of
priority rating based on the reports of data loss. Is there anything we
the users can do to get this moved up. As it stands I have to revert
back to 8.10 as I can not work with a machine that locks up several
times a day on average.

Charlie

[Bug 377297] Re: unable to mount seagate st300003u2 usb drive

2009-06-08 Thread apinunt
I have been experimenting some more, and seem to have one 500GB drive
formatted ext3 which looks like it mounts, as I can see an entry in
/media/.hal-mtab and a directory created /media/wd500gbA, which is the
drives label name, but no icon appears on the Desktop. Memory sticks
always mount with an icon, and looking at the properties of the memory
stick I find the owner to be the user name who mounted it. The hard disk
always shows root as the owner, could that be why it doesn't bring up an
icon on the Desktop? If so, is that a bug?

[Bug 208267] Re: openjdk-6 path should be added to java_home

2009-06-08 Thread Andrey Zaitsev
Daniel,

you have three ways (if you want eclipse to become updated and fixed):

- assign this bug to Ubuntu MOTU Team (because they maintain eclipse in ubuntu)
- find similar bugs in debian and try to pester debian maintainers (because
debian packages migrate to ubuntu)
- fix it yourself and post the patched package to PPA (or even build the latest
one, but I'm sure there should be one in someones PPA)

It's an OSS world :)

Martyn, it does not matter if the bug is in Hardy, Intrepid or Jaunty,
as long as it's the same bug.

Apart from that, if it's a different issue, then please unduplicate it (you can
do this yourself) - I have not investigated myself.
You may create a need-packaging bug for the new package (and maybe assign it to
the source package libprojectm?!).

[Bug 61903] Re: dhcp3 fails to start during boot-time but starts seamlessly invoking the init-script manually

2009-06-08 Thread Ian Justman
My fix for dhcp3 starting on power-up is to chgrp the /etc/dhcp3
directory to dhcpd, then it works. Won't work for everyone, but for me,
since the box is only a DHCP server, it's fine.

The error that flies by but it says that it can't read the config file.
That's because the directory is owned by root:root and is set to 750, so
you gotta be root or in group root to see what's in that directory.

A possible solution in case both client and server need access is to put
the "dhcp" and "dhcpd" users into the root group. The idea is to make
sure that both users SOMEhow have access to that directory.

[Bug 382305] Re: falied to boot Ubuntu 9.04 in portable disk

2009-06-08 Thread Brian Murray
Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that
"screenshot of error" was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes
to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, since this was not one
I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the
definition of a patch. You can learn more about what qualifies as a
patch at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Patches. Thanks!

[Bug 384884] [NEW] Desktop temporarily freezes

2009-06-08 Thread Octavio Alvarez
Public bug reported:

The desktop is constantly freezing.

I haven't pinpointed the problem yet. It may happen any moment for no
apparent reason. I haven't found a way to reproduce the problem yet.

It is very weird. Some apps freeze before others, but it is different
each time. For example the system is frozen as I'm typing this. I can
tell because the system monitor applet is not scrolling. The clock and
link-monitor-applet is updating, though. Other than this window, no
other windows are responding. I *can* switch to other workspaces, but
windows don't repaint except this one. Sometimes it looks like a soft
lockup.

I read about other bug reports, and, some don't fit because my system
does NOT have an ext4 partition and not using an Intel graphics card. I
am NOT using Compiz. I am using the open source ATI driver, though.

I opened a different report because I haven't seem any that describes
unfreezeng after > 5 minutes. Though it unfreezes, it takes so long that
it appears that a hard reset is the only way. So it *may* be a duplicate
of another bug.

There are some constants:

1. After 5 to 15 minutes, the system unfreezes. Otherwise, it looks like it's
locked (except that mouse moves).
2. While the system is frozen, you can't use CTRL+ALT+Fx switch to the tty.
3. CPU is not busy. It is 99% idle, as usual.
4. RAM looks normal.
5. Keyboard and mouse events don't get lost.
6. Network looks normal. I can SSH to the host. I put a laptop in between to
monitor the network traffice (as maybe a DNS request was blocking some critical
system component) but everything came out normal.
7. Nothing goes in the logs during the freeze (I put some tails -f to logs from
Xorg, messages, debug and a watch to dmesg and it didn't show anything).
Sometimes a "Resetting GPU" comes up in the logs, but I think this is a
consequence (of the system being unresponsive) rather than the cause.

I made the following tests in order to try to isolate the problem, but
the system didn't freeze:

1. find /
2. 2 x burnP6
3. 3 x burnP6 + 2 x find /
4. swapoff -a; swapon -a, asuming (swap_usage < free RAM + disk_buffers).
5. Loade 15 gnome-terminals with full scrollback buffers (~60 MB each) and
making all of them read a big log file at the same time.

However, I found that CPU never went past 25% in a quad-core. I assumed
all of them used the same core, so I loaded a couple of xterms too
besides the gnome-terminals and still it didn't go over 25%.

[Bug 379780] Re: High cpu usage after upgrade to 141-1.1

2009-06-08 Thread Andreas Fackler
Yes, the problem is still there with linux 2.6.30-rc8. With
udev-141-1.1, I get a similar udevadm output as Christian Mallwitz. With
version 141-1, udevadm lists only the events with SUBSYSTEM=block and
omits those with SUBSYSTEM=scsi.
