[Bug 208405] Re: [needs-packaging] iscan

2009-06-10 Thread Olaf Meeuwissen
Have you considered reading the KNOWN-PROBLEMS file in
/usr/share/doc/iscan?

Grab the source tarball and build your own .deb. Instructions are in the
README.
FWIW, I said the same thing here[1].

Seeing that Fedora 11 has also dropped libltld3 completely, I'd expect
packages built against libltdl7 with one of the upcoming releases.

WRT to the need for running the udev fixing script, this[2] already said
that Ubuntu 8.10 and later were not affected.

[Bug 97720] Re: Internet Radio Audio Freezes in Rythmbox Music Player

2009-06-10 Thread Lukáš
I'm noticing the same behaviour when listening to
http://netshow.play.cz:8000/danceradio64.ogg . In some moment playing is
stoped and apears message box with "Internal data flow error". It is
possible that it is caused by my poor internet connection. OK, but I
think that would be cool rythmobox can try to restart playing after this
stop without distrubing me with the message.

Ubuntu 9.04 (with medibuntu repo), GNOME 2.26, Rhytmbox 0.12.0

Thanks.

[Bug 268502] Re: Bluetooth doesn't work (hci_cmd_task: hci0 command tx timeout)

2009-06-10 Thread Dominique Meeùs
In the case of ID 2001:f111 D-Link Corp. [hex] DBT-122 Bluetooth
adapter, it seems that it was not so much a kernel bug than a bluez bug:

It still does NOT work with kernel 2.6.29 and the regular Bluez 4.3x from the
Ubuntu distribution.
It DOES work OK with Bluez 4.40-2 from Debian.

I've been encountering this defect after upgrading from intrepid to jaunty.
It also prevents from starting font-lock-mode (syntax highlighting) and

Could someone please have a look to this problem ?
Which informations should I provide to help solving it ?
Thanks in advance !

[Bug 343242] Re: python-xml seems to be broken with python-2.6: xpath does not work

2009-06-10 Thread Daniel Werner
Streamlining the use of the standard library xml module is probably a
good idea. However, the removal of python-xml breaks not only packages
in universe, but also third party applications. At my company, various
products include code built around PyXML's xpath module. While they run
perfectly well on our servers using older Python and PyXML versions, I
am currently only able to run test builds on my Ubuntu 9.04 workstation
after I used the "symlink booleans.so" hack mentioned above.

Is there a specific reason why PyXML shouldn't be in Ubuntu? Because now
that python-xml has been removed completely, I probably won't be able to
upgrade to future Ubuntu versions without pulling an outdated (or non-
packaged) PyXML back in.

I think you didn't notice the hype around preinstalled ubuntu and OEM,
which is where all this mess came from :) It is clear that marketing is
a good part of ubuntu, and that all of us ubuntu guys around that
install ubuntu to everyone are doing the campaign. What is unclear is
how do we behave when our distribution begins to... ehm... suck and we
have no powers to stop the distribution. I am not saying this is
completely happening: all of us can discuss these problems on ayatana
and my experience has been that the developers are very interested in
feedback and suggestions from anyone. But the pop-up window is not going
to disappear, unluckily.

[Bug 385505] [NEW] sane doesn't recognize Epson DX7450 scanner out of the box

2009-06-10 Thread L300
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sane

Connecting Epson DX7450 device to fresh install of Jaunty/Intrepid/Hardy and
running xsane produces error message: no scanner found.
Found solution here: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=241481&p=2
Quick fix:
Add following lines at the end of /etc/sane.d/epson.conf

usb 0x4b8 0x838
# And for the scanner module, use the following configuration:
usb /dev/usbscanner0
usb /dev/usb/scanner0

Afterwards, xsane starts and detects the scanner immediately.

I know this is not a big deal bug, but it is annoying for beginners to
solve such problems while it could be just plug-it-in-and-scan way. I
report it in hope that some solution manage it into Karmic Koala :-).

[Bug 354264] Re: Imports all photos to the root of the home directory

2009-06-10 Thread Martijn Vermaat
Here's an attempt at a clean up strategy. Note that I don't have any
incorrectly placed photos on this computer, so the following is all
untested. You should only proceed if you understand what the commands
are doing.

Move the relevant photos (probably in ~/2009) to the ~/Photos directory.
Make sure you don't accidentally overwrite any existing photos or
directories (go back and forth between the two directories, copying
photos, in Nautilus for example). There's probably an easy automated
command line solution for this, but I leave that to someone else (fiddle
with 'find ~/2009', 'mkdir -p', and 'cp').

Now update the F-Spot database:

mart...@michelle:~$ sqlite3 .gnome2/f-spot/photos.db
SQLite version 3.6.10
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> update photos set uri =
replace(uri,'file:///home/martijn/2009/','file:///home/martijn/Photos/2009/');
sqlite> update photo_versions set uri =
replace(uri,'file:///home/martijn/2009/','file:///home/martijn/Photos/2009/');
sqlite> .exit
mart...@michelle:~$

Of course, if you have a localized or customized location for ~/Photos,
use that in the above instructions. And use your own home directory.

This can all be easily combined into a script that does some safety
checks and reports back to the user on its results by whoever wants to
sit down for it.

[Bug 97720] Re: Internet Radio Audio Freezes in Rythmbox Music Player

2009-06-10 Thread tyle
There is an upstream bug for this:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=396409

It looks as if the matter is fixed in Rhythmbox 0.12.2:

commit 11b1567a6462bfb333a227d8bb571f3777e0144f
Author: Jonathan Matthew
Date:   Sat May 23 21:33:34 2009 +1000

player: rewrite non-crossfading backend using playbin2 (bug #542922)

Amongst other things, playbin2 does chained oggs correctly (bug #396409)
and doesn't require us to have a video sink running at all times in case
the user enables visualization (bug #406807).

If you can also provide the same data for a working case (either with a

maybe got fixed upstream).

[Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic

2009-06-10 Thread Dominik Grafenhofer
Under openSUSE 11.1 (64bit) it seems that with catalyst 9.5 the problem
is gone (I am using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650). The X server starts
up just fine without using "aticonfig --acpi-services=off". (This also
solves a problem with the HDMI output (hot-plug) recognition.)

I am sorry, that I cannot test this under Ubuntu at the moment. As the
problem seems to be rather distribution independent, this information
might be valuable anyway.

[Bug 136506] Re: LG GSA-4167B (DVD drive): DMA doesn't work

2009-06-10 Thread Stefan Bader
Hi Frank, well no worries. This happens to all of us. As far as I can
tell the output looks good the controller side seems to be limited to
UDMA/100 while the drivers claim UDMA/133 and UDMA/66. So finally the
100 is used for the disk and 66 for the DVD drive. Don't worry about the
"sd driver needs update" message. Its only a nag message to developers.

[Bug 385502] Re: X reliably crashes when trying to play this video

2009-06-10 Thread Albert Damen
Current Operating System: Linux mpt-ubuntu 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Wed
Apr 1 20:57:48 UTC 2009 i686

You are using the Intrepid kernel, which does not have GEM. The fake bufmgr
which you get instead of GEM is too small to play video. If you want to play
video, you will need to use the jaunty kernel.
Can you please boot with the jaunty kernel, 2.6.28-11-generic, and let us know
if that works ok?

That's already reported/fixed upstream - report from Feb 09 with patch

short option is working without troubles, so just --help/man longoption

[Bug 385515] [NEW] DKMS module nvidia-96.43.10 build problem under linux-rt

2009-06-10 Thread eXtractor
Public bug reported:

I've was trying to build Nvidia driver (sudo dkms build -m nvidia -v 96.43.10)
for linux-rt kernel, but got the following error message in make.log:
 /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/96.43.10/build/os-interface.c:104: error: incompatible
types in assignment

My solution of this problem is to replace

typedef struct os_sema_s
{
struct completion  completion;
#if defined(CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT)
raw_spinlock_t lock;
#else
spinlock_t lock;
#endif
S032   count;
} os_sema_t;

with

typedef struct os_sema_s
{
struct completion  completion;
//#if defined(CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT)
//raw_spinlock_t lock;
//#else
spinlock_t lock;
//#endif
S032   count;
} os_sema_t;

in that file.

So, the module had built successfully, installed and now works fine.

PS. Sorry for my (very!) bad english, but I hope you understood me.

[Bug 377011] Re: Cannot print documents to Laserjet 4350, via network

2009-06-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 382379 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382379

For all jobs your error_log shows the following:

D [10/Jun/2009:10:34:31 +0200] [Job 48] /usr/lib/cups/filter/cpdftocps:
83: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops: Permission denied

You did not make the the new filter executable. Run the commands

cancel -a
sudo chmod 755 /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops

Then try to print again. Now it should work.

[Bug 346095] Re: notify-osd doesn't honor my preference

2009-06-10 Thread Derek White
Mike,

Thank you for the slight clarification (I admit I didn't read the whole
thread). It seems like your real problem is not what this bug is
described as. Would you change the description of your bug? Or, did you
already file one for the breaking of ubuntu-desktop?

In my dealings with Ubuntu, I have found several other similar instances
- such as when attempting to remove totem after installing mplayer/vlc
or removing ekiga to install an svn version of ekiga (I just lived with
it and even upgraded [seemingly] fine). Nowadays, it seems to me that
Ubuntu changed them from dependencies to recommendations and started to
"Consider recommended packages as dependancies" at the same time; since,
I can now safely remove both of them without damaging ubuntu-desktop.
[Personally, I never ran into problems without ubuntu-desktop installed,
but I am just one case.]

I fully agree that notify-osd should not be a true dependency. At the
least have an | attached to it. Mark(?) believes differently.

I also don't believe that pulseaudio should be a dependency, nor cups,
nor evince. Hell, personally, everything should be recommended. However,
all of those have a simple method to disable them (or not use them),
while still keeping them installed. Is there no simple way to do the
same with notify-osd? Since I still have notification-daemon installed
(from 8.10 I assume), I can't even find where it would have loaded, 'ls
/etc/rc*.d /etc/init.d/ | grep not' returns nothing. They really did a
good job of obfuscating it, huh? Are they started by d-bus?

Thunderbird puts new mail notifications on the bottom-right of my
screen, how did they bypass the all-seeing-all-knowing-eye of Mark S.
and not abide by his rules - did the ubuntu thunderbird team get lashed
after release? :) (Thunderbird's notifications are horrid - they don't
even follow theme changes, text is all washed out. I wish they used
notify-osd!)

Indicator Applet - indicates something needs attention on desktop;
Notification Area - place for notification icons...does no one else see
the inherent problems with those two? I sure hope they fix it. I'm
guessing that's part of the fun stuff yet to come! Is the indicator
applet useless now? (relegated to a waste of 1px on the panel)

Further problems of Ubuntu:
Rolling release would fix many issues [PCLOS seems to do it fine, as well as
many others], but unfortunately it doesn't fit into Canonical's business model.
You can't support a version for 3 years if your constantly rolling up the same
version. [Unless I understood you wrong on comment 39.]

About the hard-of-sight (from The Ubuntu Promise):
"Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure
that the free software community has to offer." Isn't this bug about
accessibility? I hope they live up to their promises in comment 23.

Un-Related:

I still would really like to know the answers to my previously posted
questions...maybe I will take my own advice and move them to
answers.launchpad.com...a more fitting place.

>From MPT: "In future versions of Ubuntu, there will be fewer and fewer
icons in the notification area that are related to notification
bubbles." Does that mean I am losing my volume icon (it causes the
display of bubbles)? My network icon, too? Rhythmbox sits up there, it's
related to bubbles too! I guess he's talking about things like the
update icon [not really serious, I've just been up too long].

Some gems that need re-iterated:
"Maybe we should file a bug report (or series of them) on how bugs are
handled in Launchpad for the Ubuntu project. Or maybe that'd be just a
large a waste of time."
"Your message as well as most of the other @canonical.com messages in
this bug, and in other bugs elsewhere for things like regressions and
packaging errors show this quite well. Ubuntu has a problem, and it's
_far_ bigger than notify-osd."
--Perfect!

[Bug 346095] Re: notify-osd doesn't honor my preference

2009-06-10 Thread Derek White
Whoops! Forgot to mention Sebastien's hint at a fix, will it work for
you until notify-osd is fixed?

"/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service on how
it's started"

Seems like:
1) Install notification-daemon.
2) Open /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service for
editing.
3) Switch around the two exec paths at the end.
(Basically make n-d the default and n-osd the fall-back.)

[Bug 380553] Re: [karmic] Some KDE graphics operations have suddenly become laggy

2009-06-10 Thread Michael Marley
** Summary changed:

- [karmic] Some KDE graphics operations have suddenly become very laggy
+ [karmic] Some KDE graphics operations have suddenly become laggy

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

- Yesterday, without any warning, some of the graphics rendering
- operations on KDE 4.3 became incredibly slow. The two most noticeable
- are the desktop icons/folderview icons, and anything related to the
- Plasma panel and Kickoff. Mousing over the desktop icons shows obvious
- lag between when the icon selection background should appear and when it
- actually does. Also, the translucent selection rectangle, which was
- before liquid smooth throughout the entire range of travel, now becomes
- unusably slow if any icons are selected. Also, widgets in the Plasma
- panel (Quicklaunch, the K menu button, etc) now show quite a delay
- before they light up. In Kickoff, the selection indicator also lags
- significantly behind the mouse cursor. If you select an icon and try to
- move it, that lags too. Finally, the animated switching of panels
- inside Kickoff is slow and laggy.
-
- I did not update any relevant packages that might have caused this. I
- have an nVidia 8600m GT with the 185.18.10 drivers, but the problem
- occurs with any driver version.
+ On a fresh install of Kubuntu Karmic with KDE 4.3 Beta 2, there are two
+ graphics operations which are quite slow. The first one is the
+ translucent selection rectangle on the desktop. In Beta 1, it was
+ smooth and fast. Now (with Beta 2) when any Icons are selected, it
+ becomes much slower and jerkier. The other problem is that the file
+ selection indicator in Dolphin lags very far behind the mouse. This bug
+ has always been present in KDE 4.3.
