[Bug 394282] [NEW] no sound ubuntu studio karmic
Public bug reported: I installed Ubuntu Studio on 6/30 from the daily build, did all updates including 2.6.29.5-1-rt kernel, and then followed the instructions to remove pulseaudio, to wit: sudo apt-get purge remove pulseaudio sudo apt-get install esound I have no sound. I have raised volume in alsamixer. I have also raised volume using the Gnome Volume Control. under Sound problems I have tried the following suggestion: sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils reboot That did not work. RE: [Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login
That is correct, the issue is not related to networking. It is related to the time not being set correctly. We (Freescale) will have to investigate to see why the time is not setup correctly. However this should not cause Ubuntu to fail during bootup, this needs investigation from Canonical. -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com [mailto:boun...@canonical.com] On Behalf Of Loïc Minier Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2009 4:52 AM To: Mahadevan Mahesh-R9AADQ Subject: [Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login We know the MAC address isn't set in fconfig; in previous RedBoot version it would result in a static MAC address being set. I don't think the lack of MAC address itself is an issue, unless it prevents RedBoot from working properly. The issue is rather with the clock not being picked up by the kernel, probably because it was initialized differently or not at all. -- notification area applets crash on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392716 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in "redboot-imx" package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-applets Release: Ubuntu 9.04 (modified, see below) on Babbage1 or Babbage2. The error is that notification applets reliably crash on login. We get about 10 message windows that say variations of "The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet". Other applets that crashed were: WorkspaceSwitcherApplet, TrashApplet, WindowListApplet, FastUserSwitchApplet, ShowDesktopApplet, Mixer, IndicatorApplet, and NotificationAreaApplet. Babbage1: Booting with default release 9.04 from Canonical is fine. If I switch out the Redboot for a newer RedBoot (200925), the notification area applets all crash. We are looking to see what changed in RedBoot to cause this. The system is functional and stable, networking works, etc so any insights on what could cause these applets to crash on an otherwise apparently functional system would be helpful. To reproduce on Babbage1, take the Ubuntu 9.04 release and change the redboot. I have attached our 200925 redboot image. To update the redboot on the mmc card from a host (if it is /dev/sdc): # dd if=mx51_babbage_redboot-no-padding.bin of=/dev/sdc bs=512 seek=2 Babbage2: Release: Ubuntu 9.04 with an updated kernel image, no initrd, updated redboot If we boot with an ethernet cable plugged in, no error. Booting without the ethernet cable causes all the notification area applets to crash on login. ** Attachment added: "signature.asc" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28597107/signature.asc -- notification area applets crash on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 394273] [NEW] defaults to non-native external screen resolution (mode change from KMS)
Public bug reported: I have an internal LVDS (1280x800) and an external DVI (1280x1024). The laptop's lid is closed, and the laptop is docked, so I don't care about the LVDS at all. KMS sets up both outputs correctly: [2.326217] [drm] TMDS-13: set mode 1280x1024 27 [2.590106] [drm] LVDS-8: set mode 1280x800 28 A few weeks ago, when I started using KMS, all was well: The X server detected that the kernel already set the mode, and continued to use 1280x1024 on my external DVI screen. gdm appeared in full resolution, and there was no mode switch between kernel, gdm, and GNOME. In GNOME's xrandr configuration I switched off LVDS and just use DVI. In gdm (with no custom xrandr), the LVDS is active, and I guess at those times it just showed 1280x800 and cut off the lower portion of the screen. However, nowadays the X server tries to be too clever, and chooses 1024x768: (II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using initial mode 1024x768 (II) intel(0): Output DVI1 using initial mode 1024x768 This has several nasty effects: * This mode is non-native to neither of the outputs, so both look ugly * It reintroduces mode switches (kernel -> X.org startup and gdm -> GNOME session) In my ideal world, X.org would see that my laptop's lid is closed and just shut off LVDS and use DVI only by default (i. e. what I set in my xrandr configuration). In theory, X.org can access this information, either from the kernel or from devicekit-power: $ devkit-power --dump|grep lid lid-is-closed: yes If that's too complicated, then maybe it could default to only using the external, or only using the device with the largest resolution available, and switch off the others? If you need them, you can still configure them with xrandr, but IMHO the current default isn't very good. [Bug 389063] Re: Network Manager don´t save t he ip configuration
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). 4. to be a papercut, it should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. Is it an easy quick fix? For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut For resolution of the bug, kindly identify the projects affected and re-assign the bug to that project, otherwise the devs of the concerned project might not be notified of this problem. For more about finding the right package> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. RE: [Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login
The apps should not rely on networking being present. We first discovered this problem when we tried to do a demo without the network cable plugged in. -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com [mailto:boun...@canonical.com] On Behalf Of Oliver Grawert Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2009 5:07 AM To: Mahadevan Mahesh-R9AADQ Subject: [Bug 392716] Re: notification area applets crash on login the thing is that if a network connection would have been possible the system would automatically set the clock via ntp if an ntp server can be reached during bringing up the interface. so due to the MAC address not being set and in turn the interface not being able to be brought up the fallback mechanism for setting the clock was blocked additionally to the initial problem of the clock being off by ~50 years -- notification area applets crash on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392716 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. ** Attachment added: "signature.asc" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28596874/signature.asc -- notification area applets crash on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 394266] [NEW] Very bad quality from evince printing pages which have been printed to pdf using firefox
Public bug reported: Using karmic and firefox-3.0, I printed a pdf of the following web page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subgroup (permanent link: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Subgroup&oldid=296077109) If I print this pdf with evince (even printing to a pdf file) I get terrible quality and pages are converted to images. If I print it with okular, I get a good quality document, however a mathematical formula is obscured (bottom of page 3). In evince the formula is visible. Here is the pdf printed from firefox: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547865/groups.pdf The reprint from evince: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547874/a.pdf The reprint from Okular: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547885/b.pdf On this other bug report: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/150187 Adrian Johnson explained: The reason pages 1 and 4 of your PDF are printed as a bitmap are: - Firefox is using cairo operators that are not natively supported by PDF on page 1 and 4. I don't think there is any reason that Firefox needs to use anything other than CAIRO_OPERATOR_OVER when printing so I consider this a bug in Firefox. - As a result cairo embeds a fallback image in the PDF for the region drawn with operators not supported by PDF. But the bounding box of the PDF pattern used to draw the fallback image is set to the page size instead of the image size. This is a bug in cairo. - When poppler is used to print the PDF via the cairo backend the image becomes a full page image due to the pattern bounding box being set to the page size. ** Affects: poppler (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Very bad quality from evince printing pages which have been printed to pdf using firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394266 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 345710] Re: modprobe -r iwl3945 causes total system freeze
This sounds a bit stupid but I created even a v3. The reason is that after getting in touch with Huaxu, he told me that the problem does not seem to be in 2.6.30 but he wasn't sure why. So looking a bit closer I realized that in newer kernels, instead of stopping the workqueue in question later, code after this moved to a location above. And this code might cause the queue to get scheduled again (I hope I do not loose everybody here). So the v3 version takes the two patches from upstream instead of one from upstream and make some other changes. I hope I can get you to try that as well... Now, if I understand correctly, this should not be a problem in theory as the buffers/cache space should immediately become available to applications when needed. However: Kubuntu starts putting application memory into swap at this point! The result is that the system becomes *really* sluggish (as I have a slow hard drive). Also, even if I then close some application to free more memory, and at a later point raise for example an application/context menu that has just been sitting in the system tray all this time, chances are it will take a *long* time to show up because it had previously been moved to swap (for no apparent reason!). Of course, when more and more applications are kept open at the same time, the whole physical memory will also become used for application data eventually (so I guess its not a hardware problem), but at this point the swap will also have been in use quite extensively already! (That is, before it really becomes necessary.) In the common (for me) scenario described above, the early use of swapping effectively means Ubuntu treats my laptop as if it had just a third of 512 MB of RAM to begin with (as if 512 MB weren't little enough!!). I have not done any manual modifications of momory/swapping policies (nor would I know how to do this) - this behaviour is what Kubuntu gives me by default. The same problem was also present in Kubuntu Jaunty, but I feel it has become quite a bit more extreme in Karmic. Right now, for example, after having opened (and used) only plasma, firefox and tomboy since the last reboot, the output of "free -m" looks like this: total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem: 488478 9 0 0284 -/+ buffers/cache:193294 Swap: 1427204 1223 Any help (or explanation of why Kubuntu behaves like this) would be appreciated. [Bug 382118] Re: special folder bars should be possible to close
My acer aspire one netbook has 2 sd-slots. 1 of those sd-slot always contains a sd-card and is mounted as /home//Documents. When browsing that directory the bars are always visible. And they DO take too much screen space, especially when more than one program is listed (music And images = 1 line for f-spot and 1 line for rhythmbox). There is no obvious way to remove the bar, how about the following: * An option in gconf. * A checkbox in the bar (don't show this) * An item in the help that tells me what directory names not to use to avoid those bars. [Bug 67844] Re: change file encoding on the fly
Guys, do not quarrel over workaround. ;-) All text editors like for example geany, leafpad, kate or nano may be used. As I wrote, I used geany to change file encoding. Worked fine. You do not even need any other app to solve the issue, gedit is just enoug. But it forces you to do unexpected things and thus making gedit user-unfriendly. :-( You can choose encoding when opening file from inside gedit (open file form). [Bug 110954] Re: Impossible to compile native binaries with Camomile
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I am marking this bug as invalid since it's not been touched since last year and that it's reported against an old version of Ubuntu which only receives security updates. Please feel free to reopen this bug should the problem re-occur. ** Changed in: camomile (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Impossible to compile native binaries with Camomile https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110954 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 361568] Re: Black areas appear on the screen randomly
With the new driver, I've started to get more of something similar – different colored dots. Before this driver version there wasn't a lot of them (a few in the boot loading stage), but now there's almost 20 (?!) of them boot time and they even appear in the desktop sometimes. A clipped screenshot is attached (x-bug-green-dot.png – "Green dot"). If you think this is a completely different bug, I'm happy to report a new bug, but from my point of view these two things are really closely attached and they always appear together. ** Attachment added: "Green dot" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28596202/x-bug-green-dot.png -- Black areas appear on the screen randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/361568 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
