[Bug 396321] [NEW] GDM fails to start if gnome-session is not installed

2009-07-06 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The new GDM (2.26.1-0ubuntu3) fails to start for me (I just get a black
screen with the busy cursor). It appears the new GDM will fail to start
if gnome-session is not installed per /var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log:

gdm-simple-slave[3016]: WARNING: Could not spawn command: Failed to execute
child process "/usr/bin/gnome-session" (No such file or directory)
gdm-simple-slave[3016]: WARNING: Could not start command
'/usr/bin/gnome-session --autostart=/usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/':
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/gnome-session" (No such file or
directory)

Naturally since I'm running Xubuntu, gnome-session is not installed.

Is gnome-session really required or is this a configuration issue with
the new gdm?

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
Date: Mon Jul 6 22:17:03 2009
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10
NonfreeKernelModules: wl nvidia
Package: gdm 2.26.1-0ubuntu3

 SHELL=/bin/bash
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-2.15-generic

I tested linux-image-2.6.28-13 x86_64 on a laptop and it boots fine. Its
specs are:

Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7454
Turion64 x2, 2GB RAM
(k)Ubuntu 9.04, up-to-date, no 3rd party
ATI Radeon [model id ???]
Internal boot drive
No usb drives

...

Still cannot get the Phenom II machine at the top of this report to boot
without using -11 image.

...

Let me know if you need more info. Please explain the means for getting
said info.

[Bug 195397] Re: Bazaar does not follow the Freedesktop XDG Base Directory Specification

2009-07-06 Thread Martin Pool
I agree with James that at least reading from this location would be
good; we can defer the issue of automatically migrating. Arguably that
could be done in packaging.

If ~dobey is happy with that branch he should propose it for merging, or
someone else should update it and propose that.

I think plugins are probably closer to being data than configuration
because (though it's unlikely) users might have plugins there with local
modifications or that they can't easily restore. gnome-do puts its
plugins under ~/.local/share so there's a precedent.

[Bug 395403] Re: Realtek RTL-8185 based Wifi NIC causes system lockup

2009-07-06 Thread Agent24
I did apply the latest updates but that was with the card removed.

I can't even load the shell with networking support from the recovery
menu with the card attached, it also causes a lockup.

I will do what you said and send the debug information but only with the
card not plugged in - It would be impossible to do otherwise as the
system lockup problem would prevent it.

Also, the card is not faulty, it is brand new and works perfectly in
windows XP.

[Bug 195397] Re: Bazaar does not follow the Freedesktop XDG Base Directory Specification

2009-07-06 Thread Robert Collins
Its tagged wishlist, so no its not likely. Changing it is actually a lot of
effort:
 - theres a lot of docs that have to be changed
 - we need a migration path for people upgrading who aren't new users
 - we'll need to test the migration carefully

And there are remaining issues like where plugins go, which are not
trivial and may even require changing the XDG specification to have a
place for them.

[Bug 395565] Re: atheros wifi not working with kernel 2.6.31-1

2009-07-06 Thread brianafischer
Confirmed bug on Toshiba A135-S2386 using "02:00.0 Ethernet controller:
Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express
Adapter (rev 01)" and 2.6.31-2-generic

There are two method of enabling/disabling the wireless on this laptop:
   1. softkey Fn+F8
   2. toggle switch on the front of the laptop (with LED indicator)

After booting:
Method 1 does nothing. Method 2 does nothing. The following modprobe method
listed by itchy8me enables the wireless:

sudo modprobe -r -f ath5k
sudo modprobe ath5k

After this, method 1 does nothing (does not enable/disable wireless).
Method 2 operates as it should, it disables the wireless (cannot ping
google.com). However, the icon in the upper panel does not indicate the
wireless is disabled. I added a shell script with the commands listed
above to get wireless working

[Bug 394498] Re: Incorrect autodetection of appropriate DPI

2009-07-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Several things are confusing in this report. You mention that it comes
up with a 29x39 dpi, however none of your log files show that dpi.
Second, your xorg.conf appears to be hardcoding the DisplaySize... why?
Third, your xdpyinfo.txt file shows 1280x1024 pixels (361x203
millimeters), which is 90x128 dots per inch, and that does not look
incorrect.

One other question, are you using GNOME or KDE? On Jaunty's GNOME it
should already be forcing it to a fixed dpi, which gets around a lot of
the issues.

Beyond this, I've written up a guide on how to debug font size issues due to
incorrect dpi. Please review this and update this bug with the relevant
information:

2009-07-06 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thanks Jitster. It looks like the apport-collect bug you ran into was
bug 368004 which has been fixed for Karmic.

As mentioned previously, "if you could test the latest upstream kernel
available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream
developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-
upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results."

[Bug 391398] Re: Applications segfault with gtk+ version 2.17.2 when selecting listbox values

2009-07-06 Thread Kim Nguyễn
Hi guys,

the problem is the use of the deprecated function get_cell_renderers.
Instances of the bugs are in
- gtk file chooser in the location bar, the drop down tooltip for completion
segfaults,
- evince, the drop down list widget to change the zoom makes the app segfault
- epiphany, the url bar would somtime segfaults when showing possible
completions
- .. much more.

cherry picking the following commits from upstream fixes all these
issues:

http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gtk+/commit/?id=d51132e5846d93d15a9a35e4b2cbade1008078fb
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gtk+/commit/?id=c12a8388f6f88477c0fcf52d66287d744d40929d
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gtk+/commit/?id=3bf1c7adadb1fda69e63fc6fe0f3698d937a1b80

Since the issues are already fixed upstream I don't think a bug report
is necessary.

Best,

Bug 274780 relates to removing a device before resume. As I read you

Another reason to use Rekonq is the language support, Rekonq is
translated to other languages than English (I supuse it uses KDE
translation system), while Arora is just in English.

[Bug 134080] Re: CIFS: Navigating directories in DFS shares buggy

2009-07-06 Thread kernel-janitor
Hi john-e-anderson,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).  It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 134080

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 395648] Re: Mesa 7.5-rc4 through [VD_FFMPEG] DRI failure on mplayer

2009-07-06 Thread Robert Hooker
You can see it in the Xorg.0.log for future reference -

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is
needed.
[dri] Disabling DRI.

radeon.o kernel module version 2.0.0 gets loaded when you boot with KMS
and requires mesa 7.6 and libdrm-radeon1 to work with DRI, it uses the
lower 1.x.x version when its disabled which works with mesa 7.5 and no
libdrm-radeon1.

[Bug 395648] Re: Mesa 7.5-rc4 through [VD_FFMPEG] DRI failure on mplayer

2009-07-06 Thread Robert Hooker
The problem is because linux 2.6.31-1 had radeon KMS enabled by default
and the userspace can't support it so DRI was disabled completely unless
you boot with radeon.modeset=0. This is fixed in linux 2.6.31-2 which
should be available.

[Bug 325252] Re: Regression: cannot connect to WPA-PSK (TKIP encryption) wireless network with network manager plasmoid

2009-07-06 Thread Zerg
I can confirm this bug on my Dell XPS M1530 and agree that it warrants a
higher rating than "low".

0b:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
[Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

Running Karmic with latest updates as of 7/6/09.

Also, this worked fine with Jaunty.

I can connect fine to open/unencrypted networks. It is limited to WPA 1
& WPA2. I am running Kamakaze 8.09.1 on my Linksys WRT54G for what it's
worth.

Also willing to submit whatever logs are needed.

[Bug 395504] Re: kernel 2.6.31-1 xorg failure Radeon Xpress 200

2009-07-06 Thread jerrylamos
karmic 2.6.31-2 just out this evening boots on the Radeon Express 200
with normal Gnome desktop, no vertical bars. Do note however it is not
in KMS mode.

2.6.31-2 on Radeon Mobility 7500 is not in KMS mode either. The
Mobility 700 does run in KMS mode on 2.6.31-1 with no vertical bars.

Has Radeon been "blacklisted" for KMS on 2.6.31-2?

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 396304] Re: KMS problems on macbook2.1, both in VT(minor) and Xorg(freeze)

2009-07-06 Thread TobiasTheCommie
I would normally have filed this under Kernel, and not xorg. but
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting said i should file it under
Xorg.

I hope i have provided enough useful information.

I will be in vegas from tomorrow till tuesday next week, so i will not
be able to provide any further information during that time.

Sincerely
Me

P.S. Sorry for the flood

[Bug 396304] Re: KMS problems on macbook2.1, both in VT(minor) and Xorg(freeze)

2009-07-06 Thread TobiasTheCommie
During my second test i ran a for loop saving dmesg outputs while i
started gdm.

dmesg outputs 1-4 looks fine(as the one i just posted). This is before
Xorg started.

dmesg outputs 5+ looks like binary data. I have multiple stored, and
call always generate more, but here is one copy.

** Attachment added: "Garbled/binary dmesg from xorg crash"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28749450/dmesg-5

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  With kms enabled + bootsplash:
  - Everything looks fine and dandy, untill X loads. When X loads the mouse
cursor is very garbled(is only recognizable as such because it moves), and
nothing else is showing on the screen.. ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. Caps-lock,
etc, aren't responding.

With kms enabled, no bootsplash, VT only:
Resolution is changed. It looks great, and is very fast, but parts of the
very bottom of the screen (1-2px) is filled with garbage.

- This garbage is there even if the text on the screen hasn't reached the
- bottom yet. Is there after a "reset" command.
+ More information in comments.
+

  With kms disabled:
  Everything is working fine.

If i, during an kms disabled, run
  sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  sudo rmmod i915
  sudo modprobe i915 modeset=1

i will get the garbled pixels in the bottom of the VT. And a

  sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

  Will fail just as normal.

For some reason i can't explain, the Xorg.0.log.old file contains stuff
  like this after the crash:

[Bug 396304] Re: KMS problems on macbook2.1, both in VT(minor) and Xorg(freeze)

2009-07-06 Thread TobiasTheCommie
-- UPDATE

With kms enabled, no bootsplash, VT only:
Resolution is changed. It looks great, and is very fast, but parts of the very
bottom of the screen (1-2px) is filled with garbage.

--- THIS IS WRONG
--This garbage is there even if the text on the screen hasn't reached the
bottom yet. Is there after a "reset" command.

The garbage is a replication of whatever is on the last line of the
VT... Doing a sleep 10, will result in a normal cursor on the bottom
left, and weird copies of the cursor about every 10 chars to the right.

If there is more data on the bottom line(for instance, the normal
prompt, or a file list) there will be more garbled date to the right of
the cursor.

A reset fixes the issue.

Here is a dmesg from my testing of that

[Bug 360550] Re: Broken dependency in build-essential for AMD64

2009-07-06 Thread Steve Langasek
Your aptitude output shows that you have versions of the g++, g++-4.3,
and libstdc++6-4.3-dev packages installed on your system that did not
come from Ubuntu 8.04, and the rest of the packages from the gcc source
are not in your apt sources.list. So the only way apt can install
build-essential on your system is by downgrading these packages, and
aptitude happens to not notice this.

Not a bug in build-essential or in apt. You will need to remove these
gcc 4.3 packages by hand, then install build-essential.

OK, just tested the WEP 40/128 case, and it works perfect ( ie. entry
field in focus & Enter works ).

I'll test WPA-PSK and the other cases first thing tomorrow and if all is
OK, will pull together a bzr branch and submit a merge request.

Thanks!
