[Bug 401294] Re: sound applet and notification icon create duplication

2009-07-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
Just a question: are you sure that the new volume control (the one in
notification area) works if you disable PulseAudio?

If not, isn't a better solution keep the old one, but don't add in
default panel configuration (or remove from panel if you upgrade from
9.04)?

The udev restart won't help. You either need to reboot, or do
something like

  sudo udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input

Or simply detach and reattach the keyboard.

[Bug 400934] Re: [i945] (UXA) Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02)

2009-07-25 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Karmic alpha-3 is now ready for testing. We really need the logs from
the newer versions to take this any further. You should be able to get
this via a LiveCD if you install openssh-server and ssh in from another
computer. Otherwise, you may try to install the LiveCD image to a USB
stick (System -> Administration -> USB startup disk creator) and enable
persistent storage (you probably need at least a 2 GB USB stick for this
to work. This should leave the logs on the USB stick for next boot.

Thanks Paul, this got me one step further.

I did however not manager what to specify to get aac encoding work, even
I installed libfaad/libfaac, but this is not the scope of this BR.

here my commandline for the archives:

[Bug 404554] [NEW] [Karmic] Crackling noise after a sound is played on HP Mini 1000

2009-07-25 Thread Arnaud Soyez
Public bug reported:

This is on a HP Mini 1000 (1120NR).
Using Ubuntu UNR Karmic alpha-3 iso.

Generally the sound works good. The problem appears after a sound has
been played when there is only silence, after a few seconds I hear a
crackling noise which lasts for a few milliseconds. It happens
everytime. Maybe like a powersaving problem?

To test it, I just do:
paplay /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
I wait a few seconds and then I hear the crackling noise.

Note also that in at boot-time, I think when loading the hda-intel module,
there is also a crackling sound and at shutdown too.
Under Jaunty, the sound didn't work but using alsa-source and compiling the
modules I could make it work, there were no crackling sound except at boot time
and shutdown.
I remember when I was using HP MIE (Ubuntu for HP Mini's), they used a
workaround to avoid that noise, they mute the volume at boot-time and at
shutdown (but I'm not certain).

I'm available to answer any questions. Note that I'm using the LiveCD so this
is not currently installed on my laptop.

My alsa info (it also made a noise when doing alsa-info.sh):

2009-07-25 Thread Lightbreeze
Bug #62529 should be fixed in Karmic meaning you can drag Bookmarks like
Home, Documents, Pictures, etc. from 'Places' menu to your Desktop to
create links.

If Trash is a bookmark you should also be able to drag that to the

Is dragging from the 'Places' menu to the Desktop obvious enough to
solve your issue?

[Bug 404559] [NEW] [karmic] shortcut to control panel in new FUSA is inconsistent

2009-07-25 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

The new Fast User Switch Applet in Karmic points to the Gnome Control Center
for system configuration. However, the System menu still uses the old menu
structure.
This is inconsistent and could confuse users.

System-wide the same way of accessing the system settings should be
used.

[Bug 332100] Re: wine fullscreen app makes X server crash on jaunty

2009-07-25 Thread Robert Toscano
I'm not sure how many people my case affects but its not just running
wine applications that is a problem. It seems that this bug might be
related to a bigger one regarding changing resolutions in general. I
have a "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device" (still
using Jaunty) and I get undesired behavior when I change resolutions in
two different cases.

First case: If I have no acceleration enabled (in my xorg.conf), when I
change resolutions (from my native 1280x768 to something else) I just
get a black screen. I know applications are still running because I can
hear sounds and still use keyboard shortcuts. I read on some other posts
that what I'm experiencing is X unable to "sync" or "vsync". This is
also true for wine applications.

Second case: If I do have acceleration enabled (UXA), then when I change
resolutions, X crashes and I'm brought back to the log in screen. Thus
my crash might not have anything to do with wine applications.

Like I said, this is the behavior I experience on my computer, and I
wonder how many other people experience the same behavior.

Hope I was able to shed some light on the bug. A fix for this would be
much appreciated!

[Bug 404563] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 fails to boot on Dell Inspiron 630M

2009-07-25 Thread John Mills
Public bug reported:

Hello guys,
I was wondering if any one has experienced the same issue as myself, I have a
Dell Inspiron 630M (Intel 915 chipset/GMA900 graphics) laptop that will not
successfully boot the Alpha 3 of Karmick. The live cd starts I hear the ubuntu
theme but the panels at the top and bottom of the screen keep flashing every
5-10 seconds and I am unable to access any menu items. I am unable to provide
any log files as the system is unresponsive to me and I have to manually
restart the computer. I have used Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/9.04 without issues on this
computer and the CD worked correctly on my other laptop that is an Intel 965
based machine with X3100 graphics. I hope this proves useful to you.

Regards,

John

[Bug 404562] [NEW] Fresh Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 3 after update internet not working

2009-07-25 Thread Hagar
Public bug reported:

On Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 3 LiveCD internet by wire Ethernet connection
and TV cable modem works fine. After installing Kubuntu works fine.
After updating Karmic internet says bye bye. My friend can't load any
web page or even finish apt-get update. His ifconfig looks ok, he gets
IP and connection is established. Why update breaks internet for him?
How to fix it?

We installed Karmic because in Jaunty after last updates he had the same
problem. It was strange because he has that problems only in GNOME/KDE.
When I run console (alt+ctrl+F1) internet was working like it should,
pings without packages lost, but when I switch back to KDE/GNOME
internet is not working and a lot packages lost when I ping exactly the
same web page.

[Bug 403377] Re: multisearch - Google Custom Search is English Only

2009-07-25 Thread Jim Campbell
Given the loss of functionality (internationalization, ease of switching
between types of searches, unexpected search results) and how it affects
the appearance of search results (It looks kind of ugly, no? Not very
ayatana-friendly), I hope that the folks in charge at Ubuntu reverse
this change by removing this extension from the default install.

If this is something that is being put in place for the alpha and beta
releases, but will be removed for the final release, I could understand
it, as it will bring in a bit of income to support bandwidth costs
during the pre-release milestones. If it will be included in the final
release, then I think it's a poor decision based on the technical
reasons above.

If the decisions about this could be made clear to the community, I
think it would help to prevent a ruckus from being raised as more people
test out the pre-release versions. Thanks!

'_'.  Remove files from /etc/udev/rules.d unless they are user modified;
if modified and of default priority, take care to rename.
This should eventually go to Debian as well, see Debian #491117.

[Bug 352766] Re: casper-rw larger than 2GB not created (because dd is called with bs=final-size-of-persistfile)

Here's an easy workaround:

-Download the 0.2.2 tarball:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/usb-creator/0.2.2/+files/usb-creator_0.2.2.tar.gz
-Extract it and find the install.py in the scripts folder
-Replace your install.py located in /usr/share/usb-creator with the new
install.py
-Laugh heartily

I just tried it, and it works like a charm!

[Bug 404567] [NEW] /etc/init.d/sendsigs startes to early and makes Intrepid, Jaunty and Karmic hang on shutdown or reboot

2009-07-25 Thread Raphael Gradenwitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initscripts

/etc/init.d/sendsigs starts at S20 in runlevel 6 and 0 now. That is to early
and can make (at least) Intrepid, Jaunty and Karmic hang on shutdown or reboot
when e.g. network filesystems are mounted.
The Stop-Scripts umountnfs.sh (Starting at S31), networking (S35) and umountfs
(S40) cannot do their jobs after sendsigs is executed and as one result, the
Networkmanager will hang.
This is imho one possible reason for some bugreports like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/326988 (and its duplicates)

Changing the Symlinks to become on (e.g.) S50 solved the problem for me.

I propose this diff for the postinst script (based on
initscripts_2.86.ds1-61ubuntu15):

154c154
< updatercd sendsigs start 20 0 6 .
---

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the

might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system

The driver finally compiled again right away (kubuntu jaunty kernel, all

I guess it's these people's patch. I wonder why that patch can not be included

[Bug 404570] [NEW] Dolphin's RAW image previewer needs lower case extensions

2009-07-25 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

I have noticed that dolphin, using KDE 4.3 rc3 under karmic, doesn't
preview RAW images if their extension is in upper case. I'm not sure
about all formats, but this is at least true of my .NEF files. I need to
rename them all to .nef for them to show up properly previewed in
dolphin. I'm no programmer, but I guess a fix for this one should be
rather simple.

[Bug 404568] [NEW] after update to KDE 4.3 RC3, audio stutters

2009-07-25 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

As the summary says, after updating to the newly released rc3 of KDE 4.3, on
karmic, audio has started to stutter. I couldn't get any sound using the
gstreamer backend, so I've only tried different settings with the xine backend.
I've tried using the pulse setting as well as the alsa setting. The result is
exactly the same; short stutters every 5-7 seconds or so. The reason I believe
this is a phonon bug, rather than a kernel or alsa bug, is that playing audio
files using any non-phonon application works as expected.

cat /proc/asound/cards

@Ian I did what you said and surprisingly, I also experienced exactly
the same. It did solved my issue on automatic fullscreen mode. Running
Intrepid also.

Thanks...

[Bug 349229] Re: [RV350] system freeze randomly, need hard reset

2009-07-25 Thread Gobnuts
@Raphael

Is your system running fine now? And could you perhaps post the contents
of your xorg.conf ?

I've got the same video card, running Kubuntu jaunty with latest updates
and experience these freezes all the time. Even when idle, the Xorg uses
20-50% of cpu time. And all of this without running compositing.

I can also confirm that this didn't happen with Intrepid. Everything ran
smoothly _with_ compositing.

[Bug 383289] Re: Ubuntu ignores /etc/security/limits.conf

2009-07-25 Thread symon1980
found a fix..(work around)
in limits.conf replace the @audioparts with your username eg:
@username
save
logout, login
and wallah!
you can now use Realtime!
