[Bug 34155] Re: Suspend-To-Ram (S3) doesn't work on Dell Latitude C640

2009-09-14 Thread Ben Aultowski
@Erik Andrén

I tried to follow the instructions, but was a little confused, mostly
because configuring GRUB2 is different from the previous version. I
installed the drivers and added the 'radeon.modeset=1' line to GRUB2's
new config file at /etc/default/grub in the area where bootloader
settings are supposed to go. But I just got an error saying that it was
unrecognized and it tossed it out. When my system fully booted, the
display was, well, bizarre. I could make out what I was doing, but
everything seemed like it was being passed through a mosaic filter.
Other pages linked to by the one you provide seem to suggest that this
only works with the 2.6.31-13 kernels and up, but these are not Karmic's
repositories.

I've been following this bug for three years and I really, really want
to get it fixed. Could you provide a little assistance to an ordinary
user that just wants to help?

[Bug 429826] Re: [9.04] regular vector printing broken

2009-09-14 Thread Alex Valavanis
A pre-release of the upcoming Inkscape 0.47 is now available in Ubuntu
Karmic for testing. Because *so* much stuff has changed compared with
the version you reported your bug against, would you mind re-testing
this new version and see if this bug is now resolved?

Karmic Alpha CD ISO images are available at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If you're not testing Karmic yet, there are .debs of this new Inkscape
for Jaunty, Hardy, and Intrepid here:

  https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

You might find further bugs when testing this alpha release. If that is
the case, please file a NEW bug report here:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug

Thanks ahead of time for your testing efforts, and enjoy the new
Inkscape!

[Bug 425914] Re: [FFe] CC and NC networking mode is set to 'SYSTEM' by default

2009-09-14 Thread Soren Hansen
In SYSTEM mode, Eucalypus connects instances to the existing LAN by way
of a bridge, and relies on existing networking infrastructure (DHCP
servers, DNS, etc.) to run them. This is a very basic mode of operation,
and is somewhat limited. In MANAGED(-NOVLAN) you get all the bells and
whistles Eucalyptus has to offer: EBS, Elastic IP's, the user-data and
meta-data service, etc. So much for the rationale.

In order to get into MANAGED(-NOVLAN) mode, Eucalyptus needs to have a
dedicated subnet for its instances. I've added debconf questions to get
networking information from the admin and changed a bit of logic along
the way to make Eucalyptus use these settings. In this mode, Eucalyptus
will run a few extra services, which will only be exposed to
Eucalyptus' internal subnet.

This is tricky to fix, especially on a devel release that is constantly

[Bug 404219] Re: Touchpad Tap Clicking Broken (scrolling also)

2009-09-14 Thread Ben Aultowski
While stardust85 might should considered wording his reply differently,
disabling clicking with the touchpad by default is a *very strange*
choice. I also installed Karmic Alpha 5, and was baffled that a
functionality that works in every other operating system, and every
previous release of Ubuntu, was suddenly broken. Heck, it took me a
minute realize I should even *try* the buttons below my touchpad. I
assumed it was a bug, and after searching, found this report.

Unfortunately the only way I know to get around this problem is put the

The issue you encountered got fixed in sl-modem 2.9.11~20080817-3ubuntu3

[Bug 429852] [NEW] multiple sound device output missing?

2009-09-14 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Karmic Alpha 6 LiveCD

I'm not sure if this is a feature request, regression report or what,
given the overlap and development of Gnome and Pulseaudio, etc, but one
of the features we have through padevchooser (which we aren't supposed
to use, I know) on Jaunty and Intrepid, is the ability to specify /on a
per audio stream basis/ to which set of speakers to play.

So suppose I had usb headphones. That would show up as another audio
device, and pulseaudio would happily stream to *both* my main speakers
and my headphones. Further, I could have certain streams go to one of
the other speaker set. Is there a way to do this through the current
interface? Or is this a regression?

[Bug 429853] [NEW] assertion failed in file dbus-errors.c line 278.

2009-09-14 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Seen once every five-seconds during 9.04->9.10 alpha 5 upgrade:

process 384: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion "(dest)
== NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest))" failed in file dbus-errors.c line 278.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

chipcard 384 0.0 0.0 6516 1664 pts/5S+ 06:25 0:00
/usr/sbin/chipcardd4 --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-
on-error

and then later in the log:

3:2009/09/15 06-54-28: (null)(384):chipcardd.c: 1236: Closing GWEN

after the upgrade there were two processes running:

chipcard 383 0.0 0.0 6384 724 ?S06:25 0:00
/usr/sbin/chipcardd4 --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-on-error
chipcard 7765 0.0 0.0 6516 1720 ?S06:54 0:00
/usr/sbin/chipcardd4 --pidfile /var/run/chipcard/chipcardd4.pid --exit-on-error

The first of these has a PID one lower than the process (394) generating
the repeated D-Bus errors.

On the money! This particular bug seems squashed! The volume level

Some /other/ ones popped up, but that's how it goes, eh?

OK, according to Wikipedia, both spellings, en_US and en_GB are common
in Canada. Therefor I have set the fallback to 'en' for now, means
Generic English, whatever is available.

[Bug 429846] [NEW] example content needs to be updated

2009-09-14 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Karmic Alpha 6 LiveCD

I almost hate to say this, as I don't really view it as core to Ubuntu,
but the example content should probably be updated. Researching another
bug, I just watched Robbie Ferguson talk about Jaunty quite a few times.
It's a good clip, but it's for Jaunty, not for Karmic.

Do any of the case studies need to be updated? I'm not sure.

Re: [Bug 417084] Re: touchpad does not work after upgrade

2009-09-14 Thread astrotrain
Yes, I could, but it will take a while, since I don't have the
possibility of downloading and burning a disc with the latest Ubuntu -
I'm currently on a business trip. I can already tell you that I had a
similar problem when I used 7.10 and compiled my own custom kernel
based on the old configuration, see e.g.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/synaptics-touchpad-
not-detected-688892/

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1008358

I don't know whether the problems are related but in both cases my
mouse refused to work. In 7.10 with the different non-Ubuntu kernel I
did not get the error message that concerned SHMConfig, which I am
getting now.

Thank you astrotrain, could be possible that you try to reproduce this
problem in latest ubuntu version (at least in a live cd

recognized, to 8.04 (online) my touchpad stopped working. When clicking on
GSynaptics I get that I should set "SHMConfig" to "true" in xorg.conf, which I
have done, but that does not help. "synclient -l" gives the the answer that I

[Bug 429844] [NEW] audio level between 0 and 20% not output

2009-09-14 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Karmic Alpha 6 LiveCD

Using the keyboard volume buttons and changing the volume to the next
tier down below 24% stops sound output from my speakers.

0. Play song file in Totem (example content "MoShang - Invocation", in my case)
1. Set volume to 30%. → Music is audible.
2. Push volume-down key on keyboard: volume to 24% → Music is audible.
3. Push volume-down key on keyboard: volume to 18% → Music completely cuts out.

Music should not cut out at 18%. The sound output should output sound
until the volume reaches 0%.

[Bug 429842] [NEW] Apport spawns loads of processes

2009-09-14 Thread Harald Sitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

In addition (or possibly due?) to bug 429839 it happens quite often that
about 3 bln apport instances get launched (at least on the KDE side of
things), flooding ones screen with dialogs that are all stating
basically the same, just with different names.

Also, considering kdesudo does not have cached sudo access yet, the 3
bln apport instances will be preceded by 3 bln kdesudo instances (which
is even more pointless since one only needs to auth once).

To prevent both from happening Apport should implement some kind of
collection feature and only launch _one_ gui instance in some special
mode allow for batch processing/dismissing of reports (in Qt that
probably would be done using a stackwidget or similar).

Also see screenshot attached to bug 429839

[Bug 429839] [NEW] Apport reports crashes when it feels like it

2009-09-14 Thread Harald Sitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

For some unknown reason Apport regularly does not choose to report a
crash, but at some later point when it feels more comfortable
(preferably when the user is actually doing work and not poking around
for hot wallpapers). Also it tempts to re-report crashes.

For example see attached screenshot.
Java and vlc were last used 3 days ago, apport was a PITA back then (because I
deliberately crashed them for a work project) yet today it shows the crashes
again. I doubt this would make much sense for a user? At some point he might
notice that he is wasting time trying to report the same bug over and over.

+ audio devices. I note the decision is to let each audio device have its
+ own volume level. Clever.

However, this means that the notification for each device is distinct,
so there should be a way to delineate between the two. Currently, there
is not. I think including a small bit of text to indicate the device
whose (volume level) information is currently displayed would be
  helpful.

I surmise that this is a very simple change, just basically an extra

audio devices. I note the decision is to let each audio device have its
own volume level. Clever.

However, this means that the notification for each device is distinct,
so there should be a way to delineate between the two. Currently, there
is not. I think including a small bit of text to indicate the device
whose (volume level) information is currently displayed would be
helpful.

I surmise that this is a very simple change, just basically an extra
print call or string concatenation.

[Bug 429835] [NEW] chrome error when using firefox in Dutch ('nl', 'nl_NL', 'nl_BE') locale on karmic

2009-09-14 Thread Jan Claeys
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

When I use Firefox 3.5 in Dutch on karmic, I get a chrome error when
accessing a site with an "untrusted" SSL certificate:

XML-parsefout: ongedefinieerde entiteit
Locatie:
jar:file:///usr/lib/firefox-3.5.3/chrome/browser.jar!/content/browser/certerror/aboutCertError.xhtml
Regelnummer 241, kolom 34:  &certerror.introPara1;
-^

(For those who don't understand Dutch, the message says that there is an
XML parsing error because the "&certerror.introPara1;" entity found on
line 241, column 34 is not defined.)

This error is not present when I start Firefox with LANG=C, so I guess
the bug is in the translations somewhere...

[Bug 429836] [NEW] Apport eats system without being asked

2009-09-14 Thread Harald Sitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Since apport runs gdb without asking the user it might very well kill
the system (close to that in any case) through debugging.

Example:
- java crashes
- at some point apport decided to show up (which in my experience can be now or
in one week)
- apports eats all memory
- apachelogger is getting seriously pissed because he actually wanted to fix a
bug

sorry for messing you around Christoph but with regards to a feature

Also this way the branding would be easy for other distros, say Linux

scale better.

Is there an easy way which we could do this that wouldn't be too much

[Bug 429356] Re: Evolution shows new message notification with wrong count

2009-09-14 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Also, if Evolution runs for a long time, the "new message" count gets
ridiculously high, eventually becoming meaningless since I don't
remember how many of those are _really_ new messages, the only thing it
is meaningful for is "this is the number of messages that Evolution has
received since it started". If there is a notification dæmon other than
notify-osd available in Karmic, I can try that, but I am 99% sure it
will yield the same result. Of course, that hasn't been an issue
lately, since I've had to restart nearly daily (and sometimes more
frequently) between graphics chipset crashes (not the fault of software)
and bug 406582.

[Bug 429356] Re: Evolution shows new message notification with wrong count

2009-09-14 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Just to further show the effects when Evo has been running for a long
time, please see the attached.

When Evolution is restarted, the count resets to zero. However, while
it remains running, it always increases.

In this case, it's been running for roughly an hour. I maintain my
mailbox as messages come in, most of the time, so my inbox stays
relatively empty. At most, it has 50 messages that I haven't
processed/looked at yet.

Note that when I restart Evolution, I do not restart notify-osd (which,
combined with my knowledge of how the notification system works and the
specification underlying it, would seem to imply that notify-osd cannot
possibly be a failing component here).
