I can confirm this. This wasn't so in Jaunty.
And it's not "Sharp" but "Samsung"

Re: [Bug 333386] Re: Acer: Cannot change brightness with 2.6.27-11+ kernel

2009-10-08 Thread Pablo
Dear Stefan,

Thanks for your time, but unfortunately it didn't worked.
I've tried both ways (temporary and permanent)
By the way, I noticed another slight change: when connect or disconnect the
power adapter it no longer shows the upper right message showing that
brightness had been changed
I wait for more instructions to going on trying solutions.

(forgive my english if it's not very clear)

[Bug 446634] Re: google.com missing buttons

2009-10-08 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 446645] Re: Dist-upgrade to 9.10 stops installation for a non important question

2009-10-08 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.

This isn't pointless; the services in question will *cease to work
immediately* upon upgrading the modules, so restarting them is the only
way to ensure the services aren't unexpectedly down and throwing
authentication failures for the duration of the upgrade. Since many of
the services we show this prompt for are network services that the admin
may have configured in a failover configuration, it's important that we
not leave those services running in a broken configuration during the
upgrade without warning the admin of this.

Closing this report as invalid.

[Bug 446919] Re: Mouse stalls, does not respond to click, keyboard does not respont to some keys

2009-10-08 Thread Valsodarg

** Attachment added: "xorg.conf"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/7965/xorg.conf

** Description changed:

  This is a weird one:

I have a laptop running on Intel Duo Core P9500 w Nvidia 9500GT 4GB Ram. The
Computer is SAGER2096 (if anyone interested). Now the problem sometimes after I
login my mouse and keyboard will act strange:
-> Mouse can move but will not allow to click (cursor will be appear as an
I-beam)
-> Sometimes clicking will actually produce a random minimize/restore event
on the current window (even though the mouse moves correctly on the screen)
-> During that time they keyboard will lock some of the keys (these are the
Shift, the Esc, and I think arrow buttons as well), other keys work as normal.

There are no errors reported in any of the log files. The only thing I
can see is that the Xorg will unload the evdev module and all the
devices. The only way to solve it is to kill X and login again. However
sometimes that also backfires and after a while I end up with the same
  situation.

Further note: a day or two before this started one of my touchpad
buttons died (Does not work on Ubuntu or Windows) If anyone knows how to
disable the those buttons I will try to see if the bug is reproducible.

[Bug 446918] [NEW] inbox mail messages is evolution just vanished

2009-10-08 Thread spalmer8
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Expected:
Opened evolution to see my existing and new mail messages in my inbox -
evolution has been working as expected for months.

Actual:
Opened and only three new messages in inbox.

Details:
Evolution was working fine. I suspended my netbook, powered back up opened
evolution and only three brand new messages appear in my inbox - which had many
more before I suspended.

I may have closed evolution before suspending - I am not sure.

[Bug 420663] Re: acpi does not work properly on Jaunty - MSI PR200

2009-10-08 Thread Rogerio
Pablo,

I discovered that the "MSI PR200" was also sold as the computer "daru2"
from vendor "System76", as the link below shows:

http://knowledge76.com/index.php/Daru2

"System 76" provided a deb package to correct issues with this notebook,
that they called "driver":

Details: http://knowledge76.com/index.php/System76_Driver

Download: http://planet76.com/repositories/

Inside the last "driver", when the deb package is extracted, there is a
file named DSDT.aml, that can be applied in the system to correct the
ACPI problem.

I think the DSDT.aml file may help!

That makes sense, but as the patch is already applied in next version of
the debian package, it's better to make the change and indicate that
it's already applied in Debian: this way, the merge/sync will be easier
:-)

[Bug 446905] Re: Missing applications on desktop launcher

2009-10-08 Thread Scott Kitterman
Same problem here. Toggling desktop affects off and on causes the
missing application icons on the current screen to reappear. Once you
click to a different set of applications and switch back, they are gone
again. DarkwingDuck confirmed the same behavior on his system.

Marking hight because this is a major blocker on the usability of the
application launcher.

[Bug 440006] Re: 10.1 compile error on ubuntu 9.04

2009-10-08 Thread Michael Terry
Ah, I see the problem. I've been away, else I would have replied
earlier. The issue is that to compile any program, really, you need
lots of development files like headers and the like. Since you're in
Ubuntu, you can run 'apt-get build-dep deja-dup' to install the packages
you need to compile it.

However, since you're on Ubuntu, you can just run 'apt-get install deja-
dup' as well rather than compiling it yourself. If you want a more
bleeding-edge version than shipped with 9.04, you could use the PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~deja-dup-team/+archive/ppa

But yeah, if you actually for realz are interesting in compiling it, use
apt-get build-dep to get all you need.

[Bug 435707] Re: /forcefsck doesn't add '-f' argument to fsck (for ext4, ext3, ext2)

2009-10-08 Thread a7x
I think it was trying to get me to manually run fsck but it never
dropped me to a shell (as far as I could tell). When I took out 'quiet
splash' from my kernel command-line arguments it told me to manually run
fsck and it dropped me to a shell. I manually ran fsck and fixed some
"Superblock modified in the future" errors and now I can boot again.

[Bug 446132] Re: Please merge mksh 39.1-3 (universe) from Debian testing (main)

2009-10-08 Thread fabrice_sp
According to the changelog, it seems not to be a bug fixing only release:
* [tg] Shut up a bogus gcc warning during configuration process
* [tg] Spell AT&T consistently in the source code
* [tg] Tweak mksh(1) manual page, from wbx@ and «lewellyn:#ksh»
*  [tg] dot.mkshrc: fix $@ vs. $* mix-up
* [tg] dot.mkshrc: add DJB cdb hash function
* [tg] Sync with oksh: fix Vi editing mode word erase handling, again
* [tg] Skip whitespace between POSIX style shell function name and its
definition parenthesēs during detection if an alias of the same name
already exists to be more robust (Debian Closes: #535970)
* [tg] Build system improvements for ACK and nwcc, both on Debian sid
* [tg] Fix spelling error in changelog discovered by Lintian
* [tg] Aligh “set -o nounset” / “set -u” behaviour with future POSIX
standard, as discussed with GNU bash maintainers, David Korn from AT&T
ksh93, and The Open Group; prompted by use in Debian; Closes: #539538
* [tg] add an unsupported way to make printf(1) a builtin
* [tg] Build system and regression test code and comment improvements:
better and more comments matching reality better; more reliability
w.r.t.
passed CPPFLAGS; more of the MKSH_SMALL changes may be overridden, all
of
them are now enumerated on the webpage; fixed some breakage; portability
* [tg] MKSH_NOPWNAM and MKSH_SMALL will now both disable the ~fac/
(homedir) expansion code wholly if defined, not just getpwnam(3) calls
* [tg] shells without job control no longer define the standard “stop” and
“suspend” aliases (they are pointless anyway); regression tests know
* [tg] use system RCS ID macros on MirBSD if decent enough
* [tg] shut up bogus gcc 4.5/trunk warnings caused by over-optimisation
* [tg] restore ANSI C compilability broken in R38 (speed up, even)
* [tg] use memcpy(3) ipv strlcpy(3) if possible and safe and secure

Do you confirm? If it's the case, motu-release should be subscribed, for
a FFe.

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 435707] Re: /forcefsck doesn't add '-f' argument to fsck (for ext4, ext3, ext2)

2009-10-08 Thread a7x
I'm attaching two mountall log files, one from running 'sudo mountall
--force-fsck --debug 2>&1' before upgrading to mountall-0.2.0~boot3 and
one after upgrading.

mountall-0.1.8 never returned (I had to end it with ctrl-c) and the
output is truncated, probably because stdout wasn't flushed when I
killed it.

[Bug 446906] [NEW] pinentry takes over GNUPG GPG pin dialog in thunderbird

2009-10-08 Thread komputes
Public bug reported:

What I did was install a few different desktop environments:

Fluxbox
Gnome
IceWM
KDE
Openbox
xfce

All of a sudden the thunderbird GPG PIN dialog changed. After removing
xfce, Openbox, IceWM & Fluxbox the pinentry window persists. I think the
package that may be causing it is pinentry-gtk2 or pinentry-qt4 but
since both of them install to the same location I'm not sure which one
is to blame.

[Bug 432154] Re: dynamic block device attach/detach not functional with karmic KVM

2009-10-08 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Here's a status update...

I can reproduce this problem as follows, without libvirt or eucalyptus
in the picture...

Create some small auxiliary storage to dynamically add to a running VM.
  (host) $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/foo bs=1M count=64

Boot a vm in Karmic under qemu-kvm-0.11.0 like this:
  (host) $ kvm -drive file=karmic-server.img,if=scsi,boot=on -boot c

To reproduce the problem as Eucalyptus is experiencing it, you *must*
use if=scsi. This problem manifests itself when *subsequent* scsi
storage devices are added. If the device is the *first* scsi device on
the system, then it would succeed. It's the 2nd scsi device that
causes the problem.

Once the system is booted, login and in the vm, load this module:
  (vm) $ sudo modprobe acpiphp

Check that the acpiphp slots are loaded in dmesg. And note that there
is only one /dev/sd[a-z] device.

Now, drop to the qemu console with ctrl-alt-2, and add the storage:
  (qemu) pci_add auto storage file=/tmp/foo,if=scsi
  OK domain 0, bus 0, slot 6, function 0

Switch back to the vm linux shell with ctrl-alt-1, and look at the dmesg
output.
  (vm) $ dmesg | tail -n 12

[ 44.063329] scsi3 : sym-2.2.3

More importantly, note that no /dev/sd[b-z] device shows up.

This is Eucalyptus' use case (though they use libvirt to do the above).

The official, supported way of doing this according to upstream qemu and
kvm is to use virtio instead of scsi. They have acknowledged that scsi
is buggy, and can in fact lose data when the buffer is saturated.

Truly, if you now drop to the qemu console with ctrl-alt-2, and do this:
  (qemu) pci_add auto storage file=/tmp/foo,if=virtio
  OK domain 0, bus 0, slot 7, function 0

Going back to the vm with ctrl-alt-1, you can now see a new /dev/vda
device registered. Eucalyptus notes that this is not ideal because the
device is called /dev/vda instead of /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. They are
concerned that this breaks compatibility with EC2 images which expect
disks in the /dev/sd[a-z] namespace, particularly because some of these
images hardcode such device names in /etc/fstab. Fortunately, in Ubuntu
we use UUIDs, so we don't suffer from this, really, in our guests.

Now, all of that said, it is actually possible to hot-add a second scsi
device (though upstream recommends doing so through virtio instead).
However, this method is not yet supported by libvirt. The key is that
with modern qemu, you have to add a drive to a bus, rather than adding a
whole pci bus. Here's how:

Drop to a qemu console with ctrl-alt-2. Get the address of the current scsi
bus:
  (qemu) info pci
Look for "SCSI Controller". In my case, it's on Bus 0, device 4, function 0

Now instead of pci_add, use drive_add
  (qemu) drive_add 0:4 file=/tmp/foo,if=scsi
  OK bus 0, unit 1

This is not ideal, however, as I tried re-scan the scsi bus with rescan-
scsi-bus.sh (from scsitools) without luck. It did not pick up the new
sdb device. However, I did reboot the vm, and voila, I now have
/dev/sdb.

I'm not sure how to proceed with this bug...

 1) Upstream qemu/kvm recommends using virtio instead of scsi; Eucalyptus does
not want to as it introduces inconsistency with EC2.
 2) Libvirt could (perhaps) be taught to use drive_add; but I have not yet
figured out how to trigger a re-scan of the scsi bus in the guest automatically
and without performing a reboot.
 3) Arguably, this is a regression in qemu-kvm (since kvm-84). I've been
grokking the git commit history for several hours now, and have attempted to
build some random snapshots at various points in time in the interest of
bisecting the regression. This has not been productive so far.

I could probably use some assistance at this point.

[Bug 446900] [NEW] VLC doesn't stop the gnome-screensaver

I select the option "inhibit the power management option during

[Bug 443080] Re: boot hangs during forced fsck

2009-10-08 Thread Rajeev
So here is the party ! -

I get an error message :
"fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda6 has been mounted 27 times
without being checked. check forced"

Ernst can you please elaborate on this post and give steps on how to restore
the system using a Jaunty CD.
Well, I restored my machine by booting with an USB stick and then chrooting
into the affected install. There, I could easily downgrade the package.
However, that's not an 'easy' way: you have to know how to chroot, you have
to have a LiveUSB or -CD, etc.

It would be great if someone could provide detailed steps for
restoration of the system.

[Bug 446674] Re: [Karmic] no more stellarium or googleearth with mesa 7.6 with Radeon Mobility 7500 1002:4c57

2009-10-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
You have this error message in the googleearth crash:
drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -12. Kernel failed to parse or rejected command stream. See
dmesg for more info.

Can you attach the output of `dmesg` from after reproducing the crash so
we can see this additional info?

Also, in your gdb output from comment #5, it looks like you almost got
the full backtrace.. Can you please repeat that and then collect the
full backtrace? Like this:

  (gdb) set logging on gdb.txt
  (gdb) run
  (gdb) backtrace full

If xorg is locking up, you may need to run gdb from a tty console or
from sshing into the machine.

[Bug 446891] [NEW] USB Startup Disk Creator Formatting over all Partitions

2009-10-08 Thread tsultana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator-gtk

In Beta Karmic I went to make a bootable usb drive with the Karmic iso.
My USB drive was formatted with 3 partitions; 750 MB fat32 with Jaunty
OS, and 2 ext2 partitions.

The fat32 partition did not have enough room and I selected Format from
the program. Instead of formatting the partition that I had selected,
the program reformatted the entire USB drive as one fat32 partition,
destroying all data.

My IronKey usb drive has the label "IronKey" in Jaunty but in Beta
Karmic it is "IronKey ".

In nautilus when I right-click in Karmic to run the ironkey executable

for Jaunty it is;

sudo /media/IronKey/linux/ironkey
