[Bug 378726] Re: package moodle 1.9.4.dfsg-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-10-23 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Nominated for SRU for Jaunty. This bug causes installation to fail for
users who do not already have PostgreSQL or MySQL configured first. This
bug was fixed in Karmic with 1.9.4.dfsg-0ubuntu4 by having moodle depend
on either PostgreSQL or MySQL. Also we are moving debconf to depends
instead of pre-depends as pre-depends is heavily discouraged.

TEST CASE:
To test bug:
Install moodle. During installation, select postgresql (as that is default).
Moodle installation will fail with the error "package moodle
1.9.4.dfsg-0ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation
script returned error exit status 1" If moodle were setup correctly, you would
be able to access the software by visiting http://localhost/moodle/ in your web
browser.

To test fix:
Purge moodle php5-pgsql php5-xmlrpc postgresql postgresql-8.3
postgresql-client-8.3 postgresql-client-common postgresql-common mysql-server
mysql-server-5.0 php5-mysql
Install patched moodle.
Installation should complete and http://localhost/moodle/ should work fine.

There is no expected regression potential.

[Bug 423648] Re: Package heavily out of date

2009-10-23 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

As we are way past Feature Freeze, please follow the Feature Freeze exception
process described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess.
Anyway, without a really good reason, it will be very complicated to have in
Karmic: we are one week from release :-) Otherwise, it will be automatically
synced when next development cycle begins.

I'll unsubscribe u-u-s for the moment: please feel free to subcribe
u-u-s again when the FFe is approved.

Thank,s
Fabrice

I see this too, but only on resume from suspend. If this is only an
indication that the system was slow to resume -- is that a big problem,
worthy of a crash report? Maybe it should be a "Note" rather than a

[Bug 459594] [NEW] NetworkManager unable to connect to a 2701HGV-W Gateway running dual WPA/WPA2 authentication

2009-10-23 Thread peitschie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I was attempting to connect to a 2701HGV-W Gateway running dual WPA/WPA2
authentication. I was unable to connect, with daemon.log showing
repeated copies of:

Oct 24 17:03:49 mach4 wpa_supplicant[1512]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS

Running iwlist scan at the time showed two cells with the same SSID, but
different addresses, and each with a different authentication method.

I was able to work around this issue by disabling WPA authentication, so only
WPA2 authentication was offered. Then network manager was able to connect
without issues.

This behaviour is seen on a 2701HGV-W Gateway router, which is one
offered with some Telstra ADSL packages. Currently, the default set up
for these routers will essentially prevent any linux computer from
connecting wirelessly.

[Bug 456985] Re: account configuration not working

2009-10-23 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Steve,

Would you agree to adding the "broken_shadow" option to pam_unix in the
account mode?

The use case here is a laptop that normally authenticates with kerberos
and gets it's NSS from LDAP, including the shadow map, even though it's
not really used in this situation (due to the use of kerberos). This
all works fine when the laptop is connected to the network.

But take it away from the network where it depends on pam-ccreds to
cache the kerberos authentication tokens (works just fine) and nscd to
cache the passwd/group entries that were used while connected to the
network, there is no shadow entry available for nscd cached passwd
entries and thus, pam_unix's account mode breaks.

[Bug 431812] Re: i915: black screen on boot

2009-10-23 Thread joeclarkia
I had this problem earlier in the karmic release cycle, and now, after
using Update Manager to update to what I assume is the Release
Candidate, the problem returned. I suppose that the update overwrote my
grub settings, which had the i915.modeset=0 parameter added. So... is
this parameter still supposed to be required? It apparently still is on
my hardware at least (Dell GX60, Intel 82845G/GL). Maybe the
installer/updater should set it automatically for unfortunate hardware
like mine, if there is no actual fix for the problem.

[Bug 441396] Re: Totem hangs while loading a video with .srt (or .txt in MicroDVD format) sub from nautilus

2009-10-23 Thread Kevin
Ubuntu Linux 9.10 Karmic Koala RC1 Desktop amd64

I've got the same problem but in my case, if I select the subtitle
manually after totem plays the video, it loses the sound. The video is
still displayed yet audio's completely gone. The audio is back in about
10 seconds yet the video and audio are not synchronised correctly.

Without subtitle -> fine
Automatic load of subtitle -> totem freezes
Manual load of subtitle after playing video -> no sound -> in 10 sec, audio is
back yet out of sync.

By the way, some of the subtitle files I tried are smi files, and the
others are srt files.

Regards,
Kevin

[Bug 156615] Re: sound notification does not allow to specify a custom wav file

2009-10-23 Thread Shunk
I think this is a design feature to stop unwanted repeat playing of the
sound.

I have done some tests and it appears to be that Thunderbird will not
play the sound again after having once played it until you have actually
done something in T/b. I found that opening an email (any email) or
switching folder views was sufficient to get T/b to play the sound when
the next email arrived. HTH.

[Bug 367685] Re: xmacro quit-key no longer recognized

2009-10-23 Thread Sky
@Rich: that's exactly my issue. I'm still using 8.10, and it is entirely
because of this that I have not been able to update. It looks like
Karmic will also not be an option for me, since this issue has
apparently not been fixed in that release either. Very frustrating.

I don't have the technical knowledge to work on this, but how do we hunt
down someone who does? Can we at least isolate the issue? It seems that
the xmacro programs are written in C++. Does anyone have enough of
knowledge of that language that they could take a brief look at this and
see if it's an easy fix? Perhaps it's something incredibly simple... if
it is, I'd hate for this issue to continue to sit here unfixed. I filed
this bug report in April, and as far as I can see, nothing's been done
with it since that time. What is the procedure to get this escalated? Is
there anything that I can do to assist with that process?

Sorry for not testing this sooner. I just updated tonight using this fix
and tested, and I can definitely confirm that it did *not* work for me.

What I cannot confirm, however, is that I gave the same bug as what
everyone else is reporting. Evolution *only* crashes for me if VLC media
player is running, and a new email comes in. Under those circumstances
it crashes about 1-2 out of every 3 times, and it still happens after
this update.

If this is not what others are experiencing, then the bug I originally
reported
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/424099) was
marked as a duplicate in error. If it is what they are experiencing,
then this fix does not work.

[Bug 459586] [NEW] Karmic: OV2640 Webcam no longer works (Inspiron 1520)

2009-10-23 Thread hewbert
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Karmic (RC) on this Dell Inspiron 1520, the
integrated webcam no longer works. This worked out of the box in
Jaunty. It is on the supported list at http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/

$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam

$ ls /dev/video*
ls: cannot access /dev/video*: No such file or directory

$ uname -srv
Linux 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009

lsmod shows uvcvideo, videodev, and v4l1_compat are loaded.

[Bug 414866] Re: python-pygpu depends on non-existent python-cg

2009-10-23 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

The problem is not with python-cg binary package not been synced. The problem
is that pycg FTBFS, as you can see there:
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pycg/0.14.1-2/+build/1079256/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-karmic-i386.pycg_0.14.1-2_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

This because nvidia-cg-toolkit is en 'empty' package that download the
tarball at installation time, but Ubuntu buildd do not have internet
access.

So the steps to follow as a workaround for this bug are:
- download the source package of pycg (apt-get source pycg),
- build it locally (debuild -b),
- and install the locally built package.
This way you will be able to install python-pygpu.

For the moment, I will unsubscribe u-u-s, as there is nothing to
sponsor. Feel free to subscribe again u-u-s when a clear action is
required.

thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 439779] Re: Sound mixer problems with Realtek ALC889A

2009-10-23 Thread danl4
I also have the ALC889A on my motherboard and am having the same problem
with the 9.10 RC. Absolutely no sound from anything from any ports on
my board. I even threw in a sound-blaster card from my previous setup
and re-installed and no sound from it either.

aplay -l shows both devices, alsamixer and also the xfce mixer show all
of the outputs as being enabled and with the volume up. The system
volume is also up. Still, no sound.

[Bug 303697] Re: [RV730XT] [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems - independent of compiz use

2009-10-23 Thread psarhjinian
Still happens with Karmic (updated to 20091023), with Totem set to use
Xv and fglrx 2:8.660-0ubuntu4 driving a Radeon HD4770. No modifications
to xorg.conf. Tests with fullscreen video

Without Compiz
In Totem, normal X output doesn't tear (or if it does, it's subtle) but does
more than double CPU usage. Using OpenGL in VLC doesn't tear, uses less CPU
(but not as little as Xv). Xv tears with a progressive tear line proceeding
distractingly down the screen

With Compiz (and with sync to vblank and refresh set to match amdcc)
In Totem, normal X and Xv tear in a progressive manner, with the tear line
progressing down the screen a bit more haphazardly than without Compiz. VLC
with GL tears, but in an odd, flickery fashion. CPU is slightly higher (10%)
across the board.

I'm experiencing the same issue, on Karmic-rc-server-amd64. However, I
think I can add some additional info to shed some light on this:

A thread on the Debian bugtracker mentions that this may be related to a
broken libcwidget3. Updating it with 'aptitude update; aptitude
upgrade' does not fix it as of post time.

However, I've noticed that the issue may not be with aptitude at all,
but with the terminal. Scrolling the bash history on the ttys sometimes
prints control characters instead of acting as up/down arrows. If I log
in via ssh, aptitude works fine. Based on that, I think that the
culprit is more likely the framebuffer device.

[Bug 373245] Re: karmic: wakeups : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-10-23 Thread luarvik1
I found that the problem disappeared when I removed the Mono
applications/libraries, Ubuntuone, couchDB

And I am not running saned, rsync, speech-dispatcher in /etc/rc2.d/
(CouchDB is uninstalled now)

I still do not know which of these caused the problem.

Anyway, the battery time is now over 6 1/2 hours when full (more than
Windows XP), and the wakeups are about 26 / sec

[Bug 459580] [NEW] extra visual effects don't work when upgrading to 9.10

2009-10-23 Thread akajfreak
Public bug reported:

I have intel integrated graphics.
extra visual effects worked totally fine upon my initial install of ubuntu 9.04
I had compiz fusion running smoothly and everything.
Upon upgrading to the 9.10 beta, I cannot select "extra" anymore
it just searches for drivers, and then says that I can't apply extra visual
effects.

And now my computer only boots up in the correct resolution about half
of the time (it seems completely random).

(also, my soundcard and trackpad don't work at all, and networking
slow...did 9.10 do something to all my drivers?)

[Bug 459577] [NEW] crash on multiple theme change

2009-10-23 Thread Bernhard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

In current bzr rev 1311 I have the following problem: do crashes after
multiple theme change with the trace

[Debug 06:52:46.844] [Controller] Setting theme Mini
Exception in Gtk# callback delegate
Note: Applications can use GLib.ExceptionManager.UnhandledException to handle
the exception.
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an
object

  at Docky.Interface.SeparatorItem..ctor () [0x0]
  at Docky.Core.Default.ItemsService..ctor () [0x0]

is_terminal)
   at GLib.Timeout+TimeoutProxy.Handler()
   at Gtk.Application.gtk_main()
   at Gtk.Application.Run()
   at Do.Do.Main(System.String[] args)

Related to that might be the problem that the theme tab does not
automatically update when I change themes: e.g. docky and mini should
have different looking theme tabs but they don't update immediately when
I switch from one to the other.

It is not a duplicate because it includes other packages and information
that successfully does not exist. This error effect multiple apps and more
info. Could have merged in a way that kept the additional info.

is gone.
FYI - i have not installed the alsa packages as yet.
Also tried after installing these packages and still have the same issue.
Let me know if ypu need any other info.

I filed an upstream bug:

I'm not sure how to get launchpad to monitor remote bugs, unless they're
for a distro rather than a project...

Do you have a sample test plan which I can use to reproduce the problem?

Apparently some files required by junit module were not part of the
upstream distribution. They have been checked in recently in upstream
SVN. I will need to backport them as patch.

[Bug 459573] [NEW] variable expansion uses outdated data

2009-10-23 Thread Aidan Furlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bacula

I use "$Client-$Year-$Month-$Day" as my LabelFormat. Recently I tried to
backup a server called ralph (this was a scheduled job). The Volume was
created with the correct name but the job failed as the FileDaemon was
not running, as below:

24-Oct 08:17 floyd-dir JobId 65: Created new Volume "ralph-fd-2009-10-24" in
catalog.
24-Oct 08:17 floyd-dir JobId 65: Using Device "FileStorage"
24-Oct 08:17 floyd-dir JobId 65: Warning: bsock.c:123 Could not connect to
Client: ralph-fd on 192.168.1.254:9102. ERR=Connection refused

The job eventually terminated itself. Subsequently I tried to run a job
manually to backup a different server (benson) and got the following output:

24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: No prior Full backup Job record found.
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: No prior or suitable Full backup found in
catalog. Doing FULL backup.
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Start Backup JobId 66,
Job=benson.2009-10-24_13.43.03
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Using Device "FileStorage"
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-sd JobId 66: Labeled new Volume "ralph-fd-2009-10-24" on
device "FileStorage" (/bacula-volumes).
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-sd JobId 66: Wrote label to prelabeled Volume
"ralph-fd-2009-10-24" on device "FileStorage" (/bacula-volumes)
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Volume used once. Marking Volume
"ralph-fd-2009-10-24" as Used.

Note that the Volume name is again "ralph-fd-2009-10-24". It should have been
"benson-fd-2009-10-24". It looks like the variable expansion has retained the
client name "ralph-fd" from the failed job. Either that or bacula is not trying
to create a new volume at all, but instead reusing the volume created
previously but not labelled or written to.

[Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic

2009-10-23 Thread and...@drup.org
It certainly kills performance for me. glxgears goes down from 1200 to 30 !!!
(I know that it is not a scientific measure, but it does reflect the dramatic
change of feel.)
maybe there is another option which would fix the problem without killing
performance.

b.t.w. there is another bug which seems to be the same as this:

[Bug 447725] Re: grub nice 'recordfail' feature doesn't work for hibernation

2009-10-23 Thread BavarianPH
making grubenv read-only prevents the change to 1, is incorrect,

grub2 simply makes it a backup file & creates a new grubenv file with
recordfail=1.

so, if I want to boot directly to the O, I have to manally set grubenv
recordfail=0.

I hate to say it, but Grub-legacy was simpler, & less error prone,

only an expert could benefit from Grub2, most users only care about
simple, easy

choices, & want a PC just to boot to the OS of their choice without
having to have

a degree in computer science.

BavarianPH

Ubuntu forever!

[Bug 440904] Re: Notifications are blank boxes

2009-10-23 Thread and...@drup.org
I just found this thread which may be about the same problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/416001

I tried creating an xorg.conf and adding this line to the device section:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

It did fix the problem, but as stated on the other thread, it killed the
performance.
