[Bug 478832] [NEW] External hard-disk accessed even for local files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I have a Seagate 500GB external HDD. Normal behavior is when this HDD is accessed from a sleep state(spun-down) the window temporarily grays out till data is retrieved from the HDD (spin up). However, the bug is that this external HDD is accessed even when I try to access folders on local partitions (not Ubuntu's partition). I have two FAT partitions and a CDROM drive. Whenever I open these up, the external HDD is accessed, causing the window to gray out. I do not think this is normal behavior. [Bug 475607] Re: application windows have no title bar
It would appear that the reassignment of this bug to nVidia would be wrong. I just removed the proprietary nVidia driver and rebooted. As far as I can see exactly the same problem continues to occur. The same procedure for recovery works except that upon choosing normal desktop effects there is an error message stating a requirement for the nVidia driver. If loading the nVidia driver is refused the switcher immediately displays correctly and windows have title bars again! Also before bypassing the problem if the "display the desktop" button is clicked a malformed window appears stating that either the window manager doesn't support this function or there is no window manager running. I'm experiencing the same issues with "crackling sound" in FlightGear using Karmic, I have an Intel HDA-based on-board chip for sound. [Bug 478019] Re: unable to logout from gnome when using text based login
** Description changed: Ubuntu Version: 9.10 Expected behavior: If you use startx to initiate your gnome session after a console login, logging out of the gnome session should send you back to the console. Current behavior: The X Server persists and leaves you with a blank desktop. How to recreate this bug: Add "text" to your GRUB boot entry. Login at the console. Edit $HOME/.xinitrc to add "exec gnome-session". Run "startx". Use the "log out" function from Gnome Panel's Session Indicator Applet. Further information: - I'm assuming that the desktop's behavior is to terminate and to let GDM take over control. However, since GDM is never initialized, this of course doesn't happen. Working on this premise, I removed gdm from the init procedure with "sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove". This had no effect. + I'm assuming that the desktop's behavior is to terminate and to let GDM take over control. [Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
There are enough accounts to suggest that users should not try to upgrade BIOS in the attempt to work around this problem. It won't work. There are several options to work around it: 1. Disable gnome-power-manager (or for xubuntu, xfce4-power-manager). This will work. The downside, I believe, is that you will lose suspend/hibernate on closing the lid. For me this is bad, as I expect the system to at least go to standby on closing the lid. 2. Use one of the power managers, but if adjusting brightness, hit to bring up a menu, adjust (Fn-F4 or F5), and to clear the menu. Otherwise adjusting brightness is a hassle. 3l The power managers will still cause the screen to flicker when trying to autodim the screen. To clear, use the right button as above. [Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound
@Oliver -- I must respectfully disagree with you that the "login ready" sound should be on by default for accessibility reasons. A visually impaired person would not be able to go through the Ubuntu installation process unassisted -- there are no sounds in Ubiquity. Whoever is setting up the system for a visually impaired person would easily be able to enable this sound (or the system manufacturer, in the case of a pre-loaded system). In any case, the sound could be much more subtle or inconspicuous and serve the same purpose. Instead it sounds tacky, and from an HCI perspective it makes the Ubuntu startup process abrupt in many contexts that others have described (library, meetings, late night), rather than one that is natural and user-centric. I have to challenge this as a design decision. -- No GUI to configure/disable login sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)
I would suggest that the kernel is probably now fixed, but a number of people are still having trouble with Network Manager. My recommendation is to install wicd, which will uninstall NM, to see if that fixes it. You can always reverse it later. Also, use Vodafone Mobile Connect, https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=12. It does actually work with any ISP, not just Vodafone. It has the big advantage of providing a usage monitor, amongst other things. If it seems not to work, be aware that it sometimes pops up its initial configuration window behind the main one, and once you find it, there should not be any problem setting it up. You will need your PIN of course, typically . You would need to install ozerocdoff, usb-modeswitch and then vodafone- mobile-connect (try the latest svn version). The debs will install singly with Gdebi, but whatever package manager you use will offer to update usb-modeswitch to a later version, which seems to be ok to allow. I am thinking that if sufficient people try this, it should help to locate the source of the remaining problems, and/or get those people working again, even if it is only a temporary fix. It works for me, or I would not suggest it. -- Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Incomplete -- applet crashes on shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/476923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory
Update * Firstly, thanks for the feedback Andrew * I have refined the code and added appropriate tests to test_add.py under the blackbox tests * I chose to leave my changes at the builtins.py level (thus making the changes subject to blackbox tests rather than unit tests) as, with my current knowledge, they fit best under the tree_files_for_add() method rather than somewhere deeper in the core of bazaar. Please advise where to move code to if this is incorrect. * I would now like to know is there anything else I need to do? Or can this changeset be formally submitted and a start made on getting this bug resolved? What does this fix do? * The changes on my branch prevent the add command from adding anything (files, sym-links or directories) that lives under a sym-linked folder whose target is outside the working tree. What code changes are there? * When adding something via the add command, we ensure that the realpath of its parent directory lives under the basedir of the repository. If not then addition is not allowed and a user-friendly error message displayed. Some areas to focus on when reviewing these changes * Is there anything in there that could have a detrimental impact on performance? * Is this the correct layer of the code to target the fix (or should it be pushed deeper)? * Are there any extra conditions I could add to correctly cater for OSes that don't support sym-links? * Are there any other obvious test cases not covered by the blackbox tests? What tests are included * 3 blackbox tests have been added - Adding a file under a symlinked dir inside the working copy - Adding a file under a symlinked dir outside the working copy - Adding a symlink under a symlinked dir outside the working copy -- bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264275 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
