[Bug 489685] [NEW] unable to recognize some disks on upgrade to Karmic

2009-11-28 Thread David A Sinck
Public bug reported:

I have a Gigabyte GA-7DXR motherboard with an onboard RAID controller:
Promise 20265. It's running in unraided mode right now with two drives
hung off of one IDE port. In all installations of ubuntu on this
hardware prior to Karmic, the partitioning has not been an issue. All
installation methods attempted (below) have failed to properly recognize
the partitions on these drives. These drives are recognized after a
full install back to Jaunty. All failed attempts recognize the drive
and the partitioning, but report the partitions are hopelessly and
irrecoverably corrupt.

I attempted these methods of drive use/identification/recovery and had
no success:

* In-place upgrade (via update-manager) from Jaunty to Karmic (post-release)
* Post-beta yet pre-release karmic live cd (install x1)
* Post-release karmic live cd (install x2)
* gparted via post-release kamric live cd

A gparted live-cd (not ubuntu) [0.4.5-2 burned 31-Jul-2009] and all
previous versions of Ubuntu have no issues with the drives.

Possibly related/helpful URL:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1302

I suspect this is a linux kernel bug, but would be willing to have the
bug migrated to a more appropriate package.

This is preventing me from upgrading to Karmic ... and future releases?

Thanks for your time and attention!

[Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning problem in hardy

2009-11-28 Thread pliz
> I do use kernel.org kernels.

Yup! My point exactly: (1) ubuntu stock kernel bug, (2) custom kernels do not
have it (3) it has been like that for ~2 years.
Custom kernels are not such a good idea: (1) effort to recompile each time
kernel updates (a strong gentooish aftertaste), (2) lack of timely security
updates.

Thanks for the effort.

[Bug 489679] [NEW] the status bar in transmission oscillates ostensibly

2009-11-28 Thread Miguel Martinez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

Whenever the download speed appearing in the status bar changes the
number of ciphers shown (i.e from 11.7 kB to 9.6 kB), the other status
bar items move with it.

It might be better if the allocated space to the download speed widget
was fixed to maybe about 4 figures, or if the other widgets were fixed.
Thus, no oscillation would happen, which is distracting and not pleasant
whenever you are close to a boundary (be it 10 kB, 100kB or 1 MB).

[Bug 489677] [NEW] perhaps a papercut for the Ubuntu Software Center application choices

2009-11-28 Thread Casey J Peter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

It occurs to me as I look through the software center that there is no
delineation between the environment being used and the software choices
provided other than "canonical supported/all".

For instance, I use Gnome as my desktop manager. Others use XFCE, LXDE,
KDE, etc. Why is there no breakdown in the "view" selection for this
with regard to available applications?

Most users (new XP/Vista/7 converts especially) are unaware of the
differences between say Kate and Gedit, and are equally (and more
importantly) unaware of the OVERHEAD (read: dependencies) many
applications require when not "native" to the desktop they are currently
using.

I would suggest a "view" breakdown to include filtering out other
environment applications:

Filter by Desktop Manager: choice 1, choice 2, choice etc.

Another reason for this is to reduce the 'noise'. A person searching
for a specific "type" of application for their desktop would no longer
have to search through applications not specific to their environment.
Having to click and read each item only to find out its for "gnome" or
"kde" can be a royal waste of time.

[Bug 474714] Re: pulseaudio not working

2009-11-28 Thread uvaio
Hi,

Although I don;t have any problems with audio itself, I found that my
problem with Hibernation / Suspend is aparently related to the same
library.

this is called by hibernate scripts:

s...@uvaio:~$ pacmd
pacmd: error while loading shared libraries: libpulsecommon-0.9.15.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

ldd `which pulseaudio`
doesn't show any reference to libpulsecommon-0.9.15.so

Can you please help me out from this as well?

Thanks a lot

[Bug 489676] [NEW] nautilus windows lock

2009-11-28 Thread Michele Fochi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When Nautilus ask confirmation, for example on file overwrite, all other
Nautilus windows are locked and the user can't do nothing also in other
Nautilus windows.
The other windows must be unlocked, because the user can't check the two files
in detail on that situation.
Also, a little more detail on files should be appreciated (file date/time last
modified, preview, complete path and two button that open the files/dirs
directly on 2 separate process/windows).

I'm using nautilus 2.28.1 on ubuntu 9.10-amd64.

[Bug 437763] Re: More friendly repositories

2009-11-28 Thread Laco Horváth
If there are really legal issues (what i don't believe), at least there
could be some post install notification pop-ups before update notifier
shows up for the first time. This pop-up will sugest user to enable
Medibuntu, Proposed updates and Backports.

After that could follow Software updates window pop-up which will users
recommend to instal ubuntu-restricted-extras.
It would be only one shot, right after installation and those recommendations
will never again bother users.

[Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-11-28 Thread t3rmin
The default positioning in 9.10 screams "broken" to me. I was almost
certain some app was wrong about my screen resolution and was mis-
placing the bubbles. I never would have dreamed it was a design
decision.

That said, "less customization" *is* definitely the way to go for the
masses. Less is more these days. Look at the wild popularity of
netbooks, Apple products, etc. -- extremely minimalistic and all the
more functional for the most common usage patterns. And usage patterns
are narrow and narrowing (web). People just want things to work out of
the box. We (the masses) want stateless, androgynous black boxes with as
much style, soul, and instant usability as possible. We don't want to
know how it works, and we don't care to change it. But only if the
default behaviors are spot-on in the first place.

That doesn't mean you can't have an "advanced" mode for the tinkerers. I
used to be a tinkerer too, and that's great. But now I've got work to
do...

2009-11-28 Thread RodGer
Why is it a NEW feature? What changed since Ubuntu 8.04. It is a broken
OLD feature. Didn't you saw the video?

You should not insist that this won't get fixed deciding this by
yourself. You should let the community decide. Leave it open for some
time until more community members have the opportunity to tell their
opinion. Since there is a disagreement, I wouldn't keep on changing the
status or the importance according to what I think (even if I had the
needed privileges). Please do the same: Just let the community decide.
Just set the importance to undecided.

Please, remember the code of conduct you've signed.

I can confirm this on Kubuntu 9.10, didn't launched Openoffice in this session

While led turned on typing on console small letters gives me:
nu...@novopad:~$ setleds -caps
KDGKBLED: Invalid argument
Error reading current flags setting. Maybe you are not on the console?
nu...@novopad:~$ sudo setleds -caps
KDGKBLED: Invalid argument
Error reading current flags setting. Maybe you are not on the console?
Typing it in console solves the problem but after pressing Capslock two times
it's back to previous state

Using laptop built-in keyboard, it happend in previous revisions of
Kubuntu but it happens rather rare.

This seems to be related to #410098 -- twisted installs a directory

Some other tools seem to create an __init__.py file and put it into this

[Bug 349837] Re: files conflicting with python-twisted-core

2009-11-28 Thread Zooko O'Whielacronx
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 410098 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/410098

This seems to be related to #410098 -- twisted installs a directory
named "plugins" but it isn't a Python package, it is just a directory.
Some other tools seem to create an __init__.py file and put it into this
directory sometimes, and that seems to cause a problem. Or maybe I got
it all backwards. Anyway, something is messed up with regard to files
named "twisted/plugins/__init__.py" in Debian and Ubuntu.

Thanks, but this post was written after other ones in your link (I made post

merged in this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/399911,
cause there more elegant solution (look posts after #15). And of course my bug

Re: [Bug 479129] Re: [Karmic] cryptsetup not accepting filesystem type ext4

2009-11-28 Thread Claudio Moretti
I don't have them anymore; I solved by reinstalling / and /home in 2
different partitions with different passwords; in /etc/crypttab there's a
rule for taking the password of /home from a file...
Not a clean way, but it works.
Also, a friend of mine, tried to mount from SysRescue the whole partition;
it kept saying "unknown filesystem type" until he used the --offset=SECTORS
option... Then, with the right number of sectors, it mounted!

[Bug 489643] Re: Ubuntu software center locks up during install of software

2009-11-28 Thread Thomas
Fix is to reboot, then run synaptic package manager which tells you to
run "sudo dpkg --configure -a". Then the installation of MySQL server
completes which was locked. I then found the error to be a failed
installation of sun-java6-doc. The error states that sun-java6-doc does
not install because it is an upgrade. Not sure why that is, maybe
something wrong with the dependces with sun-java6-doc in the synaptic
package manager. I just clicked remove package and applied the changes
and all is fine. Ubuntu is great opensource is the only way to go. I
use five different OSes including Microsoft Windows which cost money and
Ubuntu is by far the most reliable and by far the best. I have even
found it to be better then Mac OS X.

[Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels

2009-11-28 Thread Erick Brunzell
I have experienced the same behavior with Ubuntu Karmic beginning as far
back as Alpha 6. I'm obviously not alone:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1276146

They are quite random in nature. I've experienced such lockups with web
based apps and also simple text projects, whether Gedit or Abiword. They
would occur as often as several times right in a row or as seldom as
once a week. When they occur absolutely nothing works but powering off
with the power button.

Alas I was lazy, and since Jaunty had always been stable as a rock I
just gave up on Karmic. (I multi-boot).

The reason I'm fairly convinced this must be kernel related is that,
since Karmic was largely unusable, I upgraded to Lucid (testing) as soon
as the Toolchain was uploaded and I'm not experiencing these lockups
with the Lucid kernel.

Most recently I reinstalled Karmic for grub2 testing purposes and it's
still largely unusable because of hard lockups. The first occurred
performing the initial post-install updates which created a minor mess
in itself. I then experienced another using Firefox.

I have very simple hardware: VIA PC2500 mobo, w/C-7D cpu, VIA Unichrome
gpu (no 3D), VIA VT8237 audio, w/2GB RAM.

I decided I really should try to pursue this and I do have the time to
do testing and provide info as needed, although you'll have to be
explicit about what's needed, how to get it, how to post it, etc.

We do need to fix this Koala killer!
