[Bug 489685] [NEW] unable to recognize some disks on upgrade to Karmic
Public bug reported: I have a Gigabyte GA-7DXR motherboard with an onboard RAID controller: Promise 20265. It's running in unraided mode right now with two drives hung off of one IDE port. In all installations of ubuntu on this hardware prior to Karmic, the partitioning has not been an issue. All installation methods attempted (below) have failed to properly recognize the partitions on these drives. These drives are recognized after a full install back to Jaunty. All failed attempts recognize the drive and the partitioning, but report the partitions are hopelessly and irrecoverably corrupt. I attempted these methods of drive use/identification/recovery and had no success: * In-place upgrade (via update-manager) from Jaunty to Karmic (post-release) * Post-beta yet pre-release karmic live cd (install x1) * Post-release karmic live cd (install x2) * gparted via post-release kamric live cd A gparted live-cd (not ubuntu) [0.4.5-2 burned 31-Jul-2009] and all previous versions of Ubuntu have no issues with the drives. Possibly related/helpful URL: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1302 I suspect this is a linux kernel bug, but would be willing to have the bug migrated to a more appropriate package. This is preventing me from upgrading to Karmic ... and future releases? Thanks for your time and attention! [Bug 489679] [NEW] the status bar in transmission oscillates ostensibly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: transmission Whenever the download speed appearing in the status bar changes the number of ciphers shown (i.e from 11.7 kB to 9.6 kB), the other status bar items move with it. It might be better if the allocated space to the download speed widget was fixed to maybe about 4 figures, or if the other widgets were fixed. Thus, no oscillation would happen, which is distracting and not pleasant whenever you are close to a boundary (be it 10 kB, 100kB or 1 MB). [Bug 489677] [NEW] perhaps a papercut for the Ubuntu Software Center application choices
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center It occurs to me as I look through the software center that there is no delineation between the environment being used and the software choices provided other than "canonical supported/all". For instance, I use Gnome as my desktop manager. Others use XFCE, LXDE, KDE, etc. Why is there no breakdown in the "view" selection for this with regard to available applications? Most users (new XP/Vista/7 converts especially) are unaware of the differences between say Kate and Gedit, and are equally (and more importantly) unaware of the OVERHEAD (read: dependencies) many applications require when not "native" to the desktop they are currently using. I would suggest a "view" breakdown to include filtering out other environment applications: Filter by Desktop Manager: choice 1, choice 2, choice etc. Another reason for this is to reduce the 'noise'. A person searching for a specific "type" of application for their desktop would no longer have to search through applications not specific to their environment. Having to click and read each item only to find out its for "gnome" or "kde" can be a royal waste of time. [Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right
The default positioning in 9.10 screams "broken" to me. I was almost certain some app was wrong about my screen resolution and was mis- placing the bubbles. I never would have dreamed it was a design decision. That said, "less customization" *is* definitely the way to go for the masses. Less is more these days. Look at the wild popularity of netbooks, Apple products, etc. -- extremely minimalistic and all the more functional for the most common usage patterns. And usage patterns are narrow and narrowing (web). People just want things to work out of the box. We (the masses) want stateless, androgynous black boxes with as much style, soul, and instant usability as possible. We don't want to know how it works, and we don't care to change it. But only if the default behaviors are spot-on in the first place. That doesn't mean you can't have an "advanced" mode for the tinkerers. I used to be a tinkerer too, and that's great. Re: [Bug 479129] Re: [Karmic] cryptsetup not accepting filesystem type ext4
I don't have them anymore; I solved by reinstalling / and /home in 2 different partitions with different passwords; in /etc/crypttab there's a rule for taking the password of /home from a file... Not a clean way, but it works. Also, a friend of mine, tried to mount from SysRescue the whole partition; it kept saying "unknown filesystem type" until he used the --offset=SECTORS option... Then, with the right number of sectors, it mounted! [Bug 421509] Re: Some items in the main menu have the wrong name (karmic)
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project. - In karmic the menu item for gedit is "gedit Text editor" , so this is not a problem any more. Gparted is not part of the default install hence not a papercut For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut. Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project. ** Also affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: Triaged => Invalid ** Package changed: ubuntu => gparted (Ubuntu) -- Some items in the main menu have the wrong name (karmic) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
I have experienced the same behavior with Ubuntu Karmic beginning as far back as Alpha 6. I'm obviously not alone: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1276146 They are quite random in nature. I've experienced such lockups with web based apps and also simple text projects, whether Gedit or Abiword. They would occur as often as several times right in a row or as seldom as once a week. When they occur absolutely nothing works but powering off with the power button. Alas I was lazy, and since Jaunty had always been stable as a rock I just gave up on Karmic. (I multi-boot). The reason I'm fairly convinced this must be kernel related is that, since Karmic was largely unusable, I upgraded to Lucid (testing) as soon as the Toolchain was uploaded and I'm not experiencing these lockups with the Lucid kernel. Most recently I reinstalled Karmic for grub2 testing purposes and it's still largely unusable because of hard lockups. The first occurred performing the initial post-install updates which created a minor mess in itself. I then experienced another using Firefox. I have very simple hardware: VIA PC2500 mobo, w/C-7D cpu, VIA Unichrome gpu (no 3D), VIA VT8237 audio, w/2GB RAM. I decided I really should try to pursue this and I do have the time to do testing and provide info as needed, although you'll have to be explicit about what's needed, how to get it, how to post it, etc. We do need to fix this Koala killer! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 489474] Re: Need newbie-friendly alternative to maintenance shell when mount fails
jtniehof, I am not suggesting a "significant design effort" (please re- read the report) and this bug/wishlist item concerns an existing, basic usability failure rather than posit a new "would be nice to have" idea. If this should be filed against another package, then say so. Otherwise, please allow this issue to be addressed via the normal channels. Thank you. ** Changed in: mountall (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- Need newbie-friendly alternative to maintenance shell when mount fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489474 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
