[Bug 496654] Re: Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic): xenner: depends on non-existent library

2009-12-14 Thread SevenMachines
i've tested it on karmic without any problems, the rebuild corrects the
library dependencies to work with the correct dynamic versions and not
libxenctrl.so itself. without libxen3-dev installed there isnt any
libxenctrl.so errors. have you tested the new package and are still
getting them?

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2009-12-14 Thread dlgandalf
I've noticed something very weird, when running tiobench, When run on
the root filesystem I'm experiencing same as everyone else, When the
exact same test is run/written from/to something else than the root fs,
io wait is much lower, responsiveness is excellent and data rate is
excellent too.

I can't seem to find any paramaters which are different across
filesystems, ruled out lvm, and it's on the same disk.

We'll be making this somewhat easier with builds (in a PPA) of daily

to save it in the keychain. It doesn't let me do it. My system password

I can put this password in.

Frustrating as all heck.

Also, I have no encryption on my email and there is no other options but
to over load with encryption. Why? My email is POP standard and
Evolution does not seem to support it :-( Is that stranger than fiction
or what!?!?!?

[Bug 447259] Re: Internal microphone does not work with certain programs

2009-12-14 Thread Denis.K
This also occurs with the Eee 1005ha, im pretty sure it also has an
Intel HDA for the audio as well.

Internal mic works with sound recorder, although it is very noisy and
picks up alot of background noise instead of voices.

The problem is solved by using ALSA, but it causes problems, like for
example on my eee 1005, it creates a static sound which does not go away
unless you mute the output. In skype it can be solved by using the
command < /bin/sh -c "PULSE_SERVER=127.0.0.1 skype" >, but sometimes
causes the static sound to appear.

This bug is LONG over due in being fixed, and is in my honest opinion, a
HUGE bug, since programs like skype do not work. Many people rely on
skype or other programs to call overseas, as well as family and friends,
and since audio does not work, it is a major drawback for ubuntu.

A non-working internal mic will make ALOT of laptop users not use
ubuntu. This MUST be fixed for lucid, especially since its an LTS
release - _everything_ should be expected to work, other than relatively
new systems.

[Bug 461494] Re: A print job sent to the PDF printer by Adobe Reader stucks at the "Processing" state

2009-12-14 Thread John Ridley
I'm having the same problem. I have a Brother HL-4040CN color laser. I
can print only very simple PDFs; anything with multiple photos and any
level of complex formatting, even a page with 4 or 5 photos on it, and
the job just sits in "Processing" forever. I tried printing a single
page PDF last night, and I left it until morning, 8 hours later, it
hadn't moved. It seems to send something to the printer as the Data
light is flashing, and the printer won't take jobs from any other
machine, but it never prints.

>From other apps, I can print just fine, including pages with complex
vector graphics with hundreds of lines and points.

I have tried from both the default Ubuntu document viewer and in
desperation I installed Adobe Reader, same results with both.

Finally I just installed print drivers and Adobe Reader in a copy of
Windows XP running under VirtualBox and the same PDF prints in about 10
seconds. I don't like this solution though; if I have to keep Windows
around, I might as well be running Windows.

[Bug 496785] [NEW] system-config-printer applet is eating way too much RAM

2009-12-14 Thread Eugueny Kontsevoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I rarely if ever print anything, yet on my fresh Karmic Koala
installation this applet consumes too much RAM. It's not even doing
anything (why is it there if I am not printing/configuring anything?)

System Monitor reports that this applet eats a whopping 10MB of RAM,
that's 2nd most RAM-hungry process behind compiz. I do not think that
Python is an appropriate tool for implementing auxiliary daemons.

Shall it be rewritten in C? Or perhaps shut down when not needed?

[Bug 496784] [NEW] on shutdown from X, splash screen is corrupted, partially overlaid on console messages

2009-12-14 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

When shutting down from X, the splash screen is corrupted; only part of
the Ubuntu logo is displayed, and it's rendered on top of a screen full

don't appear to have this problem.

I'm using the intel X driver with KMS on an i945GM chip.

This is also a problem in Google's Picasa version 3.0.5744-02 (this is

[Bug 496186] Re: No sound in Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-14 Thread hopsa
Ok guys, I found it. I think a lot of people might have the same
problem, because it took me a lot of googling to go through all
different sound-problems people have with different solutions which
sometimes work and sometimes don't work.

In the end I found the following reported bug (sorry I didn't find it
earlier), #82988, see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-
driver/+question/82988.

Now in that report is suggested to upgrade alsa, which I found in many,
many, many other reports as well, including
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting what I guess is
something like "the official Ubuntu soundtrouble guide".

And after the upgrade of alsa finally you have to download hda-verb, and
install it. Now, this works fine, but I was curious, and reinstalled
ubuntu 9.10 again, this time I intentionally did not upgrade alsa and
performed the "hda-dev"-procedure. And guess what, that was all it took.

Sound is working, although I haven't tested it thoroughly yet, since I just got
it working. Now if I look at
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandriva/2010.0/x86_64/media/contrib/release/hda-verb-0.3-2mdv2010.0.x86_64.html
a description of the program can be read there, but I copy it here:
"hda-verb is a tiny program that allows you to access the HD-audio
codecs directly, allowing you to send commands (verbs) to them. For
hda-verb to work you must be running a linux kernel with
CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP option enabled."

Now I wonder if I'm using alsa to talk to the sound-card or if this is
directly communicating with the kernel, but hey who cares, it works!

Thanks a lot to the people in bug-report #82988 who found out about hda-
dev and especially to Mandriva who made the program. I think it is a
shame, this is needed. Perhaps it can be at least be added to the
SoundTroubleshooting Guide so that more people can find this more
easily.

But for the rest, Ubuntu is great !

Regards,
Hopsa

2009-12-14 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

aoetools is currently a "suggests" of eucalyptus-nc.

In order to fully support Elastic Block Storage (EBS), we actually need
to depend or recommend aoetools. To do this, we need to MIR aoetools.

i'd just add that the initscript and dpkg scripts probably need a closer
look in general, that would be part of upgrading the package though and
not a minimal bug fix for this version

2009-12-14 Thread SevenMachines
thats not a bug in the new package, its a problem with the old one. the old
initscript is broken so uninstallation fails on trying to stop the daemon in
the dpkg pre-removal script. in this particular case its ok to remove the prerm
script before upgrading

[Bug 496779] [NEW] switching VT away from plymouth does not reliably show the boot messages

2009-12-14 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

To check on what was taking my system a long time to boot, I tried to
switch VT's with Alt+arrow keys. This caused the console boot messages
to appear briefly, only to be replaced immediately by the plymouth boot
splash again. So something apparently didn't want to let go of the
console.

Thank you for providing a patch for this bug report. This particular
package is synchronized with Debian so it would be quite helpful if you
were to forward the patch to the Debian bug tracker. You can learn more
about how to use the Debian bug tracker at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debian/Bugs. After you've forwarded the bug
report and patch please add a bug watch, following the procedure at

[Bug 496770] Re: apparmor doesn't respect ignore directory on boot

Also of some concern is how, after the full apparmor restart, it lists a
bunch of processes unrelated to dovecot as being "unconfined". I'm not
up on apparmor terminology, but that makes it seem like it's no longer
enforcing those processes.

[Bug 496773] [NEW] Failsafe X should pick fbdev instead of vesa if KMS is in use

2009-12-14 Thread Robert Hooker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

xserver-xorg-video-vesa doesn't work when KMS is in use on my machines,
but changing /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to use fbdev lets failsafe X
work. pm-utils has a method of determining of KMS is in use that could
possibly be used in the /etc/gdm/failsafeXServer script to determine
which driver should be picked for fallback_driver in there instead of
just using vesa.

grep -q -E '(nouveau|drm)fb' /proc/fb

a nouveau KMS fb is called nouveaufb, a radeon KMS fb is called
radeondrmfb and an intel KMS fb is called inteldrmfb. those are the only
use cases of KMS currently.

[Bug 496770] [NEW] apparmor doesn't respect ignore directory on boot

2009-12-14 Thread Graeme Humphries
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

This appears new to karmic, and I'm seeing it on the x86 port. On boot,
profiles symlinked into the ignore directories don't get ignored, they
get set to complain mode. A "service apparmor reload" or "service
apparmor restart" doesn't set them to ignore properly, you need to do a
full "service apparmor stop && service apparmor start" to get it to
properly ignore the rules.

I see this consistently with the enforcement rules on Dovecot, as my
maildirs are in ~/mail for each user, and this throws a lot of errors in
syslog with the default apparmor ruleset.

[Bug 495557] Re: permissions on /var mysteriously changed to 0644

2009-12-14 Thread RedScourge
For what it's worth, I can't think of any need to ever change
permissions on /var and I certainly would not do it. I will provide any
info you require.

New hardware, new install, all I've done is add a bunch of packages
suitable for a webserver (apache, php, mysql, related packages, etc, and
some admin/log stuff like webalizer).

It must be a direct result of something that happened on Dec 10 2009
because there were no errors for anything in cron.daily the day before.
I suspect the packages I mentioned because the only interesting entries
in my LogWatch for this period were the following:

- dpkg status changes Begin

 Installed:
libdb4.5 4.5.20-11
libgeoip1 1.4.4.dfsg-1
webalizer 2.01.10-32.1

 Unknown lines:
2009-12-10 10:54:20 startup archives unpack
2009-12-10 10:54:23 configure libdb4.5 4.5.20-11 4.5.20-11
2009-12-10 10:54:23 configure libgeoip1 1.4.4.dfsg-1 1.4.4.dfsg-1
2009-12-10 10:54:23 configure webalizer 2.01.10-32.1 2.01.10-32.1
2009-12-10 10:54:23 startup packages configure
2009-12-10 10:54:23 trigproc libc6 2.7-10ubuntu5 2.7-10ubuntu5

The only other thing I can think of (and that my bash history verifies) is that
I changed the default apache2 user to apache instead of www-data, with
useradd/mod/del+groupadd, and that user's home is /var/www.

2009-12-14 Thread MarcRandolph
Howdy, and thank you for helping to improve Mythbuntu by opening this
ticket. Unfortunately, this backtrace attached is not useful to the
developers. Could both of you please open new tickets after following
the "basic backtrace" directions outlined here:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Debugging#Debugging_with_Ubuntu_packages

The above process will result in new tickets being opened, so I'm going
to close this one. Please ignore the "Invalid" wording - that is
simply unfortunate wording.

2009-12-14 Thread Josh Smith
Brian,
Thank you for the feedback. I'll go through the steps you recommended
of forwarding the bug to the debain bug tracker. as well as adding a
bug watch. I realize the patch wasn't much and it probably wasn't the
most proper way to submit it (including the whole file instead of just
the diff for a 1 line change) but it's my first "real" contribution
back to ubuntu and I really wasn't sure how to properly create the
diff and etc.

Thank you,

'plymouth ask-for-password --prompt="my prompt string"', but plymouth
doesn't appear to be using it.

Since a system may have multiple encrypted disks, each requiring a
distinct passphrase for decryption, it is vital that the prompt be
presented to the user.

[Bug 496767] [NEW] Monitor initially recognized in Ubuntu 9.10, but then reverts to "Unknown Monitor" with 800x600 resolution.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have the Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller...when I first

back to an Unknown state at 800x600_60...I'm a n00b, so please keep that
in mind.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2009-12-14 Thread rCX
Thanks for the patch/ppa. I tested the ppa version and it works well as
long as all the icons are unlocked. It's still broken after restarting
with locked icons.

Resolution change (e.g by a full screen program)...
* ... with some/all icons are locked: Ok
* ... with all icons unlocked: Ok

After restarting Ubuntu...
*... with some/all icons are locked: Broken
*... with all icons are unlocked: Ok

[Bug 233990] Re: Thunderbird's mdn (receipt) message may contain 822bis-violating bare lf which is rejected by Qmail

2009-12-14 Thread C de-Avillez

Some pout-pourri on previous comments:

> There should *never* be a bare linefeed in SMTP transmission.
> Hence, if there is one, it *must* be a bug.

I do not remember stating anything else. And, yes, I do know the
requirements in the RFCs.

> It's *only* the developer's concern *where *that bare lf is.

Pretty much all that *tried* to work with you are -- gasp! --
developers. Still, you threw them all away.

> If I meet a dev like the one I just left, he may find questions to ask me.
> Questions he only knows.

Indeed. Since now I know I am not a developer, I guess I should not try
to ask you any questions. Even those that only I know.

> As ma previous answer looks very ugly on site, I stored the html
> version html_answer.eml.

Oh, you finally noticed, good. I thought, until now, that I was the only
one (and, probably, indeed, was).

Now, back to business.

I did send an email with a MDN request to André, and -- guess what? -- I
got my MDN. As I very much expected, by the way. I was already
suspecting the UTF-8 encoding in the headers (of André's name) as the
cause but, unfortunately, André was unable to understand it.

Ah well.

So now we know where it happens, and how to workaround the issue
meanwhile. I will even go ahead and test it on TB3, just for grins.

Re: [Bug 276949] Re: No driver for HP Webcam - 15b8:6002

2009-12-14 Thread Scott Price
I had limited results with mine. It does record, but you can't change any of
the default settings. I guess there isn't enough interest in this cam as of
yet.

Good luck!

high when idle

I'm having a mixture of all the above with 9.10 so I guess this not
fixed before release. Reporting here stopped 11/19, any reason? Any
solutions?
