[Bug 497115] Re: plymouth ask-for-password doesn't register all of my keypresses when typing passphrase

2009-12-15 Thread Steve Langasek
After a few more reboots, my impression is that this is a timing thing:
if I type more slowly, plymouth's success rate increases. It looks like
maybe plymouth ignores any keypresses that happen while it's still
processing the preceding one?

[Bug 497305] [NEW] rhythmbox failes to play when launched from the startup programs

2009-12-15 Thread Merijn Schering
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have rhyhtmbox configured at System -> Preferences -> Startup
programs.

I entered:

rhythmbox http://www.omroep.nl/radio3/live64.asx

This should start a Dutch radio station on startup. It used to work but
since about two weeks Rhythmbox throws an error message. Unable to start
playback. Non of the radio stations will work, but when I close
rhythmbox and launch it again it works fine.

Not a high priority thing but it would be nice if it could be fixed.

Merijn Schering

[Bug 496816] Re: [Karmic] Update to 2.6.31.8 Stable Kernel

2009-12-15 Thread Leann Ogasawara
** Description changed:

SRU Justification/Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates
is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch
has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by
originating either directly from Linus' tree or in a minimally
backported form of that patch. The 2.6.31.8 upstream stable patch set is
now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu kernel as well.

  TEST CASE: TBD

  http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.31.8

  http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/patch-2.6.31.8.bz2

The 2.6.31.8 Upstream Stable Kernel brings in the following 91 patches:

  * ext4: Fix memory leak fix when mounting an ext4 filesystem
  * ext4: Avoid null pointer dereference when decoding EROFS w/o a journal

  * ext4: Add feature set check helper for mount & remount paths
  * ext4: Add missing unlock_new_inode() call in extent migration code
  * ext4: Allow rename to create more than EXT4_LINK_MAX subdirectories
  * ext4: Limit number of links that can be created by ext4_link()

2009-12-15 Thread Micah Gersten
@mangar,
thank you for the updates. I cannot see these issues any more in Firefox 3.5.6
on Ubuntu Karmic. I added the Hebrew Language pack and set that as default and
tried a few of the font suggestions in this bug (FreeSans, serif) and I can
read everything just fine. Could you please let us know what version of Ubuntu
you are running with which version of Firefox?

Thanks.

I just installed the recommended updates via update-manager and enden up

especially if you don't know how to boot the system though. If nobody is
able to fix it properly, PLEASE at least don't overwrite /usr/lib/grub
/grub-mkconfig_lib with the next update (where I commented the 'search'

[Bug 426417] Re: broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9

2009-12-15 Thread Aaron LaCluyze
Just tried the work-around on my system (Ubuntu 9.10, 64 bit on Lenovo
R61 with Intel video.) It seems to work perfectly.

I installed driconf via apt, and added rule for the executable
"stellarium" to disable texture tiling. My menus and icons look great
now. I can finally use Stellarium again.

[Bug 475936] Re: race condition between encrypted device creation and mountall probing with random-encrypted devices (swap, tmp)

2009-12-15 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: mountall

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest packages applied (apt-get uprade)
  Version of mountall: 1.0
Expected results: /dev/mapper/tmp should be mounted on /tmp
Unexpected results: /dev/mapper/tmp is not mounted on /tmp

  In my /etc/crypttab I have:
  tmp /dev/sda2 /dev/urandom tmp
  swap /dev/sda3 /dev/urandom swap

In my /etc/fstab I have (among other lines), this:
  /dev/mapper/tmp /tmp ext2 relatime02

Most of the time the system boots OK, but /tmp never gets mounted.
This appears to be an issue with mountall because if I run mountall from the
command line, then /tmp does get mounted.
When the /dev/mapper/tmp device is created (part of the cryptsetup process),
the mkfs -t ext2 command is run on /dev/mapper/tmp. It appears mountall is not
waiting for this to complete. Should there be a timeout for a dynamically
created tmp to be available before it is mounted?

  TEST CASE:
  1. select a spare partition on your disk, referred to below as /dev/sdf12
  2. install the cryptsetup package from karmic.
  3. configure it for use with cryptsetup as a device with a random key by
adding this line to /etc/crypttab:
- /dev/mapper/cryptswap /dev/sdf12 /dev/urandom swap
+ /dev/mapper/cryptswap /dev/sdf12 /dev/urandom swap
  4. configure the swap partition to be auto-enabled by adding this line to
/etc/fstab:
- /dev/mapper/cryptswap noneswapsw 0
  0
+ /dev/mapper/cryptswap noneswapsw 0
  0
  5. reboot
  6. verify that the swap partition is not successfully enabled (either by
confirming that the system fails to boot fully, or by checking the output of
'swapon -s')
  7. if necessary to boot the system, reboot to single-user mode, mount
-orw,remount /, and comment out the cryptswap line from /etc/fstab
  8. upgrade to the karmic-proposed version of cryptsetup
  9. re-enable the cryptswap line in /etc/fstab
  10. reboot
  11. verify that the swap partition has been successfully enabled, by checking
the output of 'swapon -s'
+
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
+ In order to prevent mountall from seeing the block device before it's been
formatted / mkswap'ed for use, cryptsetup must create the device under a
different name initially, format, and then rename to the public device name.
For sanity's sake, the proposed patch does this for /all/ cryptsetup devices,
not just those configured for tmp or swap; and there is a small but finite risk
that someone will already have a /dev/mapper/${name}_unformatted node on their
system that conflicts with one of these devices, causing this device to fail to
be set up at boot time due to the name collision.
+
+ The '${name}_unformatted' temp name was chosen to minimize this risk; I
+ believe the risk is acceptably low for an SRU.

[Bug 477169] Re: Wubi/Karmic boot: kernel panic - not synching: VFS

2009-12-15 Thread spesa
For all comments I see here, it looks quit clear that wubi is a good
tool for previewing Ubuntu within Windows but certainly not
stable/mature enough to run Ubuntu in production mode.

As for me, I ran into trouble with Ubi every time I installed updates, same
troubles as those here above.
My Ubuntu crashed down 30 minutes ago, all in a sudden while I was simply
browsing internet using Seamonkey. I did not perform any updates right before.
The whole system freezed. I had to reboot manually my laptop. When I restarted
and selected Ubuntu in the boot menu, I saw the message "no wubimbr"... it is
displayed a fraction of second, so not totally sure to reproduce the exact
wording... anyway, right after this message is displayed, I face a wonderful
shell prompt...

So to me it is clear: WELCOME Ubuntu, BYE BYE Wubi.

What we need is a crash report, not an apport bug report. The command I

apport should upload a crash report to Launchpad.

[Bug 426417] Re: broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9

2009-12-15 Thread Bogdan Marinov
I have attached a screenshot in English in case someone needs it.

The "driconf" package can be installed with the Synaptic package manager
or by opening a terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install driconf

It will be added in the menus as System->Preferences->3D Acceleration.

You can disable texture tiling globally, or you can use the Application
settings field to add a profile and disable texture tiling only for
Stellarium.

Could everyone who has reported this bug try this workaround and report
the results here?

[Bug 497285] Re: no sound

2009-12-15 Thread Dave Walker
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 496987] Re: flash plugin is not working with several web sites ( megavideo.com ... )

2009-12-15 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 400130] Re: time-admin does not update time

In both Jaunty and Karmic the System>Administration>Time & Date has no
"Synchronize Now" button. I am confirming this on several installations
from the final i386 live install CDs. This appears to be a bug since the
documentation mentions a button and shows a screenshot of a button that
is not present.

As stated in an earlier comment, the patch in that package was just
wrong and nobody cared to correct that patch so far.

[Bug 443980] Re: upstart hangs while starting cryptdisks

2009-12-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cryptsetup - 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu5

---
cryptsetup (2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu5) lucid; urgency=low

  * Rename the upstart job introduced in the previous upload to
cryptdisks-udev and restore the previous version of the job as
cryptdisks-enable, to run at the end of udev coldplugging as before;
this isn't entirely race-free, but should nevertheless give us the
two passes needed to cover devices that are decrypted using keys stored
on other encrypted disks. LP: #443980.

I am looking for a way to prevent it from being mounted in the first place.

[Bug 497054] Re: installing nvidia-glx-185 (173 96) removes xserver-xorg

2009-12-15 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
I stated that above "nvidia-glx-185 (173 96)" but there isn't a 190.
180 is just a transitional package for nvidia-glx-185.

I think this is a big problem because I first found this problem just my
simply trying to enable "Visual Effects" in gnome. After enabling it
installed the nvidia-glx and uninstalled xserver-xorg without my
knowledge. I just rebooted and X wouldn't start. Then I messed around
until I figured out xserver-xorg was nolonger installed.

[Bug 459910] Re: Computer freezes when I insert CD.

2009-12-15 Thread Bryan Zimmerman
I have this same problem. Insert a CD or DVD into drive and try to
access it and everything freezes. Have to do a hard reset. If I leave
a CD in the drive and reboot, the computer will boot to the login screen
and stay there no problem. I can CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a command prompt
and login and the system will continue to work. Once I login to gnome,
the system will freeze every time in ~ 15 seconds. If I login to gnome,
guaranteed freeze if a CD or DVD is in the drive.

Please let me know if there is any additional information I can gather
to assist with troubleshooting this issue.

As you requested, I purged all ubuntuone (lpia) packages from my setup,
removed all configurations from my home directory (.cache/..,
.config/.., etc...) and manually installed the i386 versions. Alas, I'm
still getting the capabilities mismatch error.

[Bug 496789] Re: Nautilus rename mode is broken.

2009-12-15 Thread Zedi
Q1. Is this reproducible? - Probably.
Q2. If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? - I don't
know. All I know is; the day it started I was playing with some themes and
Compiz settings. Sure, I reset everything to like it was before (to the best of
my knowledge) but, this very frustrating bug still persist.
Sorry for not being more specific, but I'm only the user, who doesn't know much
about geek stuff.
