[Bug 444349] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-12-29 Thread Radek Krahl
Try to add 'user=mysql' in [mysqld] section of /etc/mysql/my.cnf before
doing 'apt-get install mysql-server'.

It worked for me. My problem was mysqld creating log files
(/var/lib/mysql/[hostname]-bin.[number]) for innodb tables owned by root
during the installation/upgrade. When started normally as mysql, mysqld
didn't have permission to read/write these files. It looks like package
installation script starts mysqld as root at first, and then as mysql.

[Bug 501470] Re: Firefox wants download PHP files.

2009-12-29 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Unfortunately, this usually
indicates a problem with the webserver not returning proper content to
the web browser. There is nothing Firefox can do in this case since the
server is not sending the proper content. Please report this to the
owner of the site in question. If they find a Firefox specific issue,
we'd be happy to look into it. Please report any other issues you may
find.

[Bug 151375] Re: white window borders in fully horizontally stretched windows

How is this not a bug? The window content itself is drawn fine, the
borders become white. If there is some weird limitation on window width,
it should be simply enforced.

  * configure.in: Conditionally link libfontconfig and libfreetype2 if
directly accessed by FOX in current configuration (closes: #554399).
  * debian/control: Build-depend directly on these libraries.
  * debian/control: Add section: libs for source package
(closes: #561207, #561211).
  * Update to new source format 3.0 (quilt).
  * Relax build dependencies on OpenGL libraries to allow different
implementations (closes: #461542).

fox1.6 (1.6.36-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.
  * Updated config.sub, config.guess (closes: #401527, #537528). Not sure
if those bugs were valid for fox1.6 anyway.
Note that this is currently a hack, the whole autoconf generated code is
updated by a quilt patch.
  * Use $(MAKE) instead of plain make in debian/rules to enable parallel
builds.
  * Merge changes from NMU of 1.6.25-1.1 and my own upload which somehow did
not make it to Subversion.
  * Add a debian/watch file.
  * Remove DH_COMPAT from debian/rules, set compatibility level 6 in
debian/compat.
  * Generate autoconf, automake and libtoolize outputs during build instead
of using a quilt patch for fixing the distributed generated files.
  * Fixes to comply with current Standards-Version:
[ Policy 3.8.0 ]
+ Add debian/README.source with instructions how to add new patches.
+ debian/control: Add the Homepage field.
  * New patch fix_dup_widgets_html: Fixes doc/Makefile.am to not try
installing widgets.html twice (breaks install target).
  * Depend on debhelper >= 6.

fox1.6 (1.6.25-1.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Fix long-standing FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD (Closes: #414400):
 - Add autotools-dev to Build-Depends.
 - Copy /usr/share/misc/config.{guess,sub} before configure.
 - Delete config.{guess, sub} during clean to keep the diff clean.
  * Update Build-Depends to no longer list obsolete packages:
  - libcupsys2-dev → libcups2-dev
  - libglu1-xorg-dev → libglu1-mesa-dev
  - xlibmesa-gl-dev | libgl-dev → libgl1-mesa-dev
  * Ditto for Depends, and add ${shlibs:Depends} for the -dev package
given that it contains the following binary: /usr/bin/reswrap-1.6,
so that it gets a dependency on the libc.

[Bug 479533] Re: [Karmic] GSPCA module installed but not found

2009-12-29 Thread razorbuzz
046d:08d7 Add me to this list. I'm noticing we all have non-UVC
cam's, and that preloads work for us. Preload is fine for now, I just
created alias to run them easier... except for web/java interfaces that
grab the cam. ie: Jmeeting.com, I can't get it to work as a preload (to
my knowledge) isn't possible for a web Java app.

Skype, Cheese, GyachE all work with preload.
VLC works without a preload.

[Bug 420577] Re: [i945] Macbook's DVI out doesn't work

2009-12-29 Thread mikesmithv
I just tried another monitor (DVI) and it worked fine in all modes. So
the problem seems to be that certain monitors are not recognized as a
DVI device. The monitor which is not recognized is a Dell SE198WFP flat
panel LCD monitor.

Another curious thing is that xrandr occasionally reports more
information as if it is "trying" to detect the monitor as shown below:

m...@dell64:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2880 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 367mm x

   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
DVI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  1440x900 (0x3f) 106.5MHz
h: width 1440 start 1520 end 1672 total 1904 skew0 clock 55.9KHz
v: height 900 start 903 end 909 total 934 clock 59.9Hz

Typing xrandr a second time does not show those last 3 lines. I do not
know why those last 3 lines show up sometimes but I think it is more
likely to happen just after I have plugged in the monitor. The monitor
is a 1440X900, same as the laptop screen so it could be info about
either screen.

[Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2009-12-29 Thread Irihapeti
I installed linux-image-2.6.30-freezetest1, linux-
image-2.6.30-freezetest8 and linux-image-2.6.30-freezetest9, as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/447892. I tested freezetest1 and freezetest9 for over 1 1/2
hours without lockup. I removed "acpi=off" from the grub kernel line in
both cases.

The kernels behaved well, as far as I can tell, except that I had to
boot using the recovery mode. Otherwise, boot hung at the point where
the listing of modem drivers occurs.

As version 9 didn't freeze, I didn't bother with testing version 8.

[Bug 36761] Re: Without ja_JP as default environment, Japanese font looks horrible for certain font sizes

2009-12-29 Thread catphive
I'm also using both japanese and english, with the default english
install.

The fonts seemed to be just missing geometry in some of the more
complicated kanji... I'm not a native japanese speaker, but I *think* it
was just because the fonts were bad, and not a legitimate variation in
the font. Either way, they were difficult to read.

Installing areteichi's .font.conf on ubuntu 9.10 gave me nicer japanese
fonts, without messing up the normal english ones.

I see this bug is unassigned and dates to 2006... If a dev comes across
this I encourage them to merge in areteichi's changes and not delay
further.

There's way too many little glitches like this, with fixes just sitting
in the bug tracker... please put this in svn.

[Bug 158259] Re: wide windows have messed up window decoration

2009-12-29 Thread Alexey Kotlyarov
This is reproducible on latest Karmic. SSH is not needed, any window
exhibits the same behavior, see the video. Starting from some width,
window decorations become corrupted.

This behavior starts from 2554 pixels width on my 1280x1024 monitor. No
problems with height of 9000 pixels, though.

Public bug reported:

Hello,

I am using gnome-sound-recorder 2.28.1 in Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bits).
The recording duration increases rapidly and regularly (about 30 sec added in
the display for 1 sec).
Moreover playback does not work after recording.

Recording was working fine with Ubuntu 8.10 (64 bits) on the same
hardware.

Thanks to have a look.

[Bug 501562] [NEW] firefox crashes on tab mix plus session restore

2009-12-29 Thread Marc Horowitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Before I upgraded from Jaunty (with firefox 3.0.x) to Karmic (firefox
3.5.x), I saved my current session of 34 windows and about 190 tabs.
Firefox 3.5 is unable to restore this session; it crashes every time.*
After churning for a minute or two, it seg faults. apport is
overwhelmed:

Sorry, the program "firefox" closed unexpectedly

Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically
analyze the problem and send a report to the developers.

So I let it dump core and took a stack trace by hand. Each stack trace
is different, but they all have a common characteristic: over 2000
frames of this over and over again:

#2682 0x412a6b3f in NS_ProcessNextEvent_P (thread=0x0, mayWait=1) at
nsThreadUtils.cpp:247

I should say I looked at $pc in frame 0 and in the topmost frame, and
they differed by about 200k. Since I'm not running into the glibc stack
limit, I can't be sure the deep stack is the cause of the core dump, but
it's awfully suspicious, and the only remotely common thing about the
multiple crashes I looked at.

I can't tell if something's just broken, or if there's some awful
recursion which manages to complete in simpler cases but is failing
catastrophically when there's an enormous amount of work to do.

When I start firefox again, it offers to restart the "previous" crashed
session, which usually has between 12 and 24 tabs in it. If I restore a
smaller session, firefox seems ok with it.

While I normally have a number of firefox add-ons enabled, the problem
occurs if I enable only tab mix plus, which is necessary to restore the
session it has stored.

* Ok, sometimes it just freezes. I seem to have forgotten to save the core,
but in that case, free() caused a seg fault, which caused something in the
signal handler to try to call free(), which deadlocked on a mutex. Oops. If
it happens again I'll file a new bug with that stack trace.

LOL, looks like we have two errors in the community documentation.

[Bug 454747] Re: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (via-rhine): transmit queue 0 timed out

2009-12-29 Thread besson3c
I have an Intel Pro 1000, but I need both PCI slots for another cards,
so... I'll add a link in that thread you posted above to this one just
to sort of ping those guys on this.

Do you know of other PC vendors that use the VT chipsets for their
ethernet controllers? Have you looked into whether this affects
particular VT chipsets, as opposed to just ours? For the record, I have
the VT6102 too:

VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78)

Is anybody here experiencing this on a different controller? I'm not
sure if this is controller specific, but this seems to be an interesting
lead...

[Bug 488340] Re: Broadcom STA Wireless driver for bcm4322 silently disconnects frequently

2009-12-29 Thread phireph0x
I have this issue on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 running on a Dell
Latitude 2100, which has a Broadcom BCM4322 wireless adapter. In my
case, I've ping tested several times from 4 different (wireless)
machines on the same network, including the netbook with the issue. The
other thee machines have 0% packet loss (tested 1000 pings), the netbook
has between 13 and 25%. So I know it's not the wireless router.

Also, since I'm seeing packet loss with ping testing, the trick of
pinging to keep the connection alive, as described by theisu, doesn't
seem to work.

I have the bcmwl-kernel-source package driver, version 5.10.91.9+bdcom-
0ubuntu4.

[Bug 501559] [NEW] libgksu fails to start many programs, fails with: assert g_str_has_prefix str != NULL

2009-12-29 Thread Scott Balneaves
Public bug reported:

libgksu2-0 has changed from the 2.0.12 to 2.0.13 release, specifically,
in it's handling of forkpty for interacting with sudo: it's now an
option which ISN'T enabled by default.

In order to restore the previous behavior:

change the rules file in debian/ to read:

DEB_CONFIGURE_EXTRA_FLAGS := --disable-gtk-doc --enable-gnome-keyring
--enable-sudo-forkpty

This will restore the previous behavior.

Simplest test to verify broken vs. fixed behavior:

gksu gksu ls ---> will give the assert error

after enabling sudo-forkpty

gksu gksu ls ---> returns directory listing, as it does on Karmic.

Please fix, blocker for sabayon in lucid

[Bug 501532] Re: rsync rename operation not permitted with SSHFS

2009-12-29 Thread T McCool
I'm going to close this out for this binary package.

There appears to be a work-around for SSHFS where you can add an option
called -oworkaround=rename that will work. I don't know all the
downsides of this --- it states some information regarding the operation
will no longer be atomic as required by POSIX. It was posted back in
2006 but the option appears to still work and appears to be unrelated to
RSYNC.

[Bug 454747] Re: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (via-rhine): transmit queue 0 timed out

2009-12-29 Thread Jack Nihil
I think the watchdog kicked-in because the via-rhine driver did not
respond to a command (I think I read somewhere that it waits 10ms). So,
assuming that the Ethernet controller has hung, the system attempts to
reset the VT6102 chip, but looking at the log that isn't successful
either, it just repeats the process forever.

I'm tempted to install an Intel Pro 1000 card I have hanging around
until someone takes notice of this problem. Like you say, it's very
troublesome.

[Bug 501557] [NEW] libwww-curl-perl is compiled without libssl, which breaks functionality

2009-12-29 Thread Patola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libwww-curl-perl

It might be related to debian bug #520595.

libwww-curl-perl 4.05-1 was compiled with openssl libs, libwww-curl-perl
4.07-1 is compiled without it. That breaks functionality: a program I
developed using perl no longer works with an HTTP certificate. When I
revert back to 4.05-1 it starts working again.

The differences from 4.05 Curl.so "ldd" command to 4.07's are:

4.05 shows:
< libcurl.so.4
< libssl.so.0.9.8
< libcrypto.so.0.9.8

4.07 shows:
> libcurl-gnutls.so.4

This is actual output from my perl program using libwww-curl-perl 4.07:

[Bug 494166] Re: [lucid] nvidia-glx can't work with new xorg 7.5

2009-12-29 Thread Curtis Lee Bolin
Alex, I would have expected you to post a question like that in
Launchpad Answers or Ubuntu forums. Usually the newest driver is the
best to use. That would be 185 in the official repository. It is all
up to you if you want to try unofficial ones. Just make sure you know
the risk and what you are doing.

[Bug 498882] Re: grub2 crashes randomly 'free magic is broken' with multiple disks

2009-12-29 Thread negativland2009
well Ive wasted a lot of time now trying to find a solution - reinstalled grub2
several times by all the different methods - tried the previous version before
the update - ran memtest on memory and mprime/prime95 torture tests (which Ive
found will detect any hardware problems if memtest doesnt) - run hard disk
checking software - upgraded / reflashed bios - im pretty sure my hardware is
fine - not having any problems with any other software - and each time I almost
think its fixed and after about the 5th boot - fails with 'free magic is
broken' - sometimes just reboots while loading grub - or comes up with
misaligned pointer - and just seems to be random and get worse over time - ie
the number of reboots required to get to the grub menu succesfully.
honestly Ive finally given up and reverted to grub1 and now having no problems.
grub2 - no thanks - a terrible piece of software - shouldnt have been released
with a full release of ubuntu - is going to put a lot of people off it id
imagine.

[Bug 454747] Re: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (via-rhine): transmit queue 0 timed out

2009-12-29 Thread besson3c
If you point me at the bug thread I'll be happy to track it and provide
whatever info is useful. I'm anxious to see this fixed, this is
particularly annoying, and I would imagine that if it is at all
widespread that it would be a nice one to have fixed.

Any theories as to why I was able to reproduce this with the 2.6.28
kernel, but never so when I ran Ubuntu 9.04? What is the watchdog/rhine
thing anyway, is it some sort of kernel module?

[Bug 501554] [NEW] No warning for browser upload if files not exist

2009-12-29 Thread TiloBunt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

E.g. use Gmail (also tried with other upload form GMX) and add an
attachment -> Browse -> use "type in Filename" enter in the Location
text field something which doesn't exist like "blablabla.jpg" hit enter
and when you send this email you don't get any warning or so that it
doesn't exist. On GMX it upload a 0.0 KB file.

Appreciate a warning if file doesn't exist. (not sure if this is nautilus or
something)
Thanks

Trying to get Hebrew working in Open Office after reloading languages,
stumbling in the Terminal, I inadvertently turned all the controls in
Open Office into Hebrew. Still can't get the text to type in Hebrew or

back into English. I can read the Hebrew alphabet and if someone can
give me instructions step by step, can you help me at least to navigate
back to where I can use OpenOffice in English?

[Bug 454747] Re: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (via-rhine): transmit queue 0 timed out

2009-12-29 Thread Jack Nihil
This isn't an isolated issue with Ubuntu 9.10. I just tested using a
Fedora 12 Live CD, transferring 3x 8GB files simultaneously to a Windows
XP share and after about 15 minutes, the same problem occurred.

The kernel for Fedora 12 is 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.

So the good news is that this isn't happening just on Ubuntu. Below is
the familiar stack trace from the failure on Fedora 12, running on the
same Shuttle SK22V10.

Do we need to take this up with kernel.org?

[Bug 431091] Re: libstdc++5 removal breaks non-ubuntu applications

2009-12-29 Thread Luke J Militello
I've had a lot of people sending me thank you mail in regards to my
tutorial to fix this...

http://www.digitalenigma.net/directory.php?include=archives&msgid=2009111000

And a lot of which have been Lexmark printers. Going forward, I would
like to see this package re-instated into the repositories at least for
legacy hardware support. That said, has there been a reason given for
its removal in the first place?

[Bug 393035] Re: Pulse audio is very difficult to setup

2009-12-29 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 501532] Re: rsync rename operation not permitted with SSHFS

2009-12-29 Thread T McCool
Using the command in the test example from the prior comment like:

rsync -a --inplace $HOME/rtest/ $HOME/Net/rtest

Seems to work around the rename issue by writing the remote file in
place. It does have the undesirable property of leaving the remote file
in an unknown state if something happens to the rsync operation.

Still don't have any better insights into the 'permissions' or
'configuration' issue. Don't understand why the 'copy' will work but the
'rename' will not.

[Bug 458959] Re: Left click doesn'r work at log in

2009-12-29 Thread tristezo2k
Dell D630 worked ok 4 years under debians, freebsd and windows.
Installed Ubuntu 9.10, and 10 minutes after the first boot, left mouse button
stop working.
Usb mouse moves ok, right and central buttons works ok.

Alt + tab stopped working too, but not Ctrl + w, Ctrl + q, or other keys
combinations.

This seems to be a condition where the touch pad AND the mouse are working at
the same time.
On this lap, it seems that when left button dies, clicking once on the touch
pad left mouse button, brings it to life again.
Thanks,
Sebastian

[Bug 501209] Re: slow keys dialog box is misleading

2009-12-29 Thread Vish
It seems to be because the dialogue was designed upstream to be
displayed in a notification bubble which allows interaction.
[notification-daemon].

But since Ubuntu uses notify-osd , the dialogue needs to be made notify-
osd friendly.

[Bug 501548] [NEW] pigin crashes in conversations preview

2009-12-29 Thread Pinkmounter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

1) My Ubuntu release is 9.10 Karmic Koala
2) My Pidgin version is 2.6.2
3) I tried to see the text style preview in the "Conversations" tab of
"Preferences" menu.
4) Pidgin crashes.

This happens when I go in the Smiley theme menu before and I select
another theme. Even if I reselect the current theme before testing
preview, it crashes. Before it crashes I sometimes can select one or few
smileys but this will display a crossed square (kind of item meaning
"void").

Sorry about the long delay in replying. I took some time today and
couldn't reproduce this. If I drop new databases into /var/lib/gnubg with
the appropriate names, and then check under Help / About gnubg /
Evaluation Engine, they're properly loaded.

Be sure that your race databases are in /var/lib/gnubg with the names
given in /usr/share/doc/gnubg/README.Debian.

[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic

Black Trenchcoat, try this...

dpkg -l | grep execflow && wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/e/event-execflow
/libevent-execflow-perl_0.64-0ubuntu1_all.deb && sudo dpkg -i libevent-

You should see v0.63 installed before hand and v0.64 afterwords. Note,
a restart of dvd::rip is necessary to effect changes.

[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic

2009-12-29 Thread Luke J Militello
So I did a rip of a unencrypted disc and it worked 100% fine -- no
errors at all. Jörn, your patch helps in that we do not have to re-
start dvd::rip. But after finding that an unencrypted disc works, this
leads me to think you may be on to something about the TOC, CSS and the
number of frames. By having this work with an unencrypted disc I am now
wondering if this maybe an issue with libdvdcss? That or what you were
saying about possible new methods of encryption on a disc. Regardless,
I am happy to report with the patch to toss up the warning, I have not
yet had any problems what so ever transcoding and backing up discs! :)

[Bug 501546] [NEW] potential spelling error ---> ~/.vnc/xtartup --> ~/.vnc/xstartup

2009-12-29 Thread mike_yung
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNC/Servers & double
check the spelling. Thanks.

The tightvncserver section reads as follows.

"Customising your session

By default, tightvncserver provides a session with a simple window
manager and a terminal. The first time tightvncserver runs, it creates a
~/.vnc/xtartup file that you can use to customise your session. Here is
an example file that would give you a GNOME desktop:"

I believe "~/.vnc/xtartup" should read "~/.vnc/xstartup". If I'm
mistaken thanks for taking the time to double check.
