[Bug 529576] [NEW] AIM suddenly won't connect using Empathy - "Network error"

2010-02-28 Thread Eric Obrock
Public bug reported:

Sometime last week, Empathy stopped being able to connect to my AIM
account. I checked to see if Pidgin had the same problem too, and it
did. I was able to fix the problem in Pidgin by unchecking "Use SSL"
under Accounts>AIM>Edit Account>Advanced

There is no similar setting in Empathy that I can find that fixes this.
Any ideas about why this suddenly occurred for both accounts at the same
time, and how to fix it?

Note:
Using Empathy 2.28.1.1 and Pidgin 2.6.5 on Karmic 64-bit.

[Bug 529577] [NEW] gconftool-2 can't find running gconfd-2

2010-02-28 Thread agriffis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf2

$ pgrep -l gconfd-2
$ gconftool-2 --spawn
$ pgrep -l gconfd-2
23220 gconfd-2

Great, so it's running, but...

$ gconftool-2 --ping ; echo $?
2

and since gconftool-2 can't find the running gconfd-2, trying to modify
settings will instead modify the database directly.

[Bug 397350] Re: unable to play audio CDs on SATA dvd/cd player

2010-02-28 Thread Ron Wills
I've been having this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and hoped with an upgrade
to 9.10 would fix it, but this bug is still persisting. This is also
across multiple kernels including the current one for 9.10,
2.6.31-19-generic.

1. I have 2 Toshiba Laptops A100 and an A200 with the exact same symptoms.
2. On both laptops the DVD drives work perfectly in Windows Vista.
3. On the A200 still has Ubuntu 9.04 and the A100 with Ubuntu 9.10 recently
upgraded to see if this problem has
been fixed, which it has not.
4. I have attempted just about every kernel option available to fix the
problem, but nothing has worked :(
5. Neither laptop has BIOS options to adjust the settings for the DVD drives.
6. The problems has persisted for several months.

I have been googling this problem and it seems to affect several
distros; Ubuntu, Redhat/Fedora, Gentoo, Suse. I am finding that most
responses to the problem is it must be bad hardware or CDs/DVDs or due
to in activity of the bugs just assuming it has been fixed :(

The Continual Symptoms:

I have also searched the kernel bugzilla, but it hasn't seemed to reach
them. Is it possible to forward this bug to them or collaborating with
other distributors to validate this bug? As far as I can tell it only
seems to affect laptops, but this problem gets attributed to bad
hardware so fast it's hard to tell.

As time permits I'm going to start further testing my hardware with
other OS's, BSD, Minix, ReactOS to see if I get any similar symptoms. If
there is anything I can do to help, please let me know ;)

[Bug 404421] Re: "Failed to restore crtc configuration: -22" on i915

2010-02-28 Thread Jason Alan Graves
So I made a little more progress.

In that syslinux folder, there is a file called text.cfg. I opened that
file with notepad, and found some lines which looked similar to what you
described. In the first 2 instances where I saw the "boot=casper", I
highlighted the "casper" part and pasted "casper -- i915.modeset=0" and
then saved the file. (Just to note, only the Fedora LiveUSB creator
worked https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick .
Other USB programs produced what seemed like an identical set of files
on my USB, including the USB creator included in the .iso itself, but
only the Fedora one makes this work for me.)

And this almost worked. I booted once again from the USB, chose the 2nd
option, which was to install (first option was to just run the system
off of the USB), and it progressed fully through the installation
procedure, all the way through to the final reboot, upon which I was
prompted to remove the USB. I did, and the system booted from what I had
installed on the hard drive. But during the boot process, the same
problem. The change was not maintained in the installation.

Now, I am running just the live USB, and will try the installation
option from the Ubuntu desktop itself instead of the installation
directly from the USB. I will post again if doing it this way will work.

But if that does not work, please tell me where I can find that text.cfg
file on the fully installed system. This way, I could run from the USB,
and then browse through the files on the hard drive and edit the file
that way.

[Bug 529525] Re: GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet missing from the "Add to Panel" dialog

2010-02-28 Thread Francis Bolduc
Posting extra information here as well.

When right-clicking on the gnome-panel, then clicking on the "Add to
Panel...", the Add to Panel dialog appears. It is possible from this
dialog to add new stuff into the gnome-panel.

However, the "User Switcher" item in the Add to Panel dialog does not
add the right entry into the gnome-panel.

The entry added to the gnome-panel is:

GNOME_FastUserSwitchAppletGdm

But it should be:

GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet

[Bug 529571] [NEW] bootup stops on fsck error

2010-02-28 Thread Monty Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

On up-to-date Lucid, my box shutdown uncleanly, leaving an ext4 root
filesystem with errors. Bootup reported that / had errors, but did not
present any options, such as fixing them or dropping in to a console...
boot simply stopped. I tried to reboot and jump into single user mode,
but grub did not allow me to get to a prompt or the menu (no pause long
enough to jump into one)

Eventually, I had to boot a live Lucid CD and manually fsck the drive.
Upon fixing the drive errors, bootup ran successfully.

[Bug 222444] Re: Login screen has wrong resolution

2010-02-28 Thread Frankynstone
The login screen is something like a user of the system, but I don't
know which it is. So if we knew this user, it should be possible to set
the display resolution for this user.

I have the same problem and had it with each and every version of
Ubuntu. My preferred resolution is 1152x864 at 75Hz. The login screen
comes with 1600x1200 at 75Hz (in theory my CRT could do this, but
practically it won't sync, so I must change the resolution somehow).

A too high resolution or frequency can cause damages on display
hardware!

[Bug 522692] Re: Pressing key causes gdm to restart on VGA16FB system

2010-02-28 Thread rossjenkins
I can confirm that this bug still affects the video driver used within
Virtual Box as well. System is Lucid Alpha 3 running in a virtual
environment under Virtual Box 3.1.4 on a Karmic host system. The systems
are exactly the same as those seen with Nvidia proprietary drivers. GDM
restarts after hitting enter during log on but then works OK at second
log on.

[Bug 529559] Re: Please merge mksh 39.3-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-02-28 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Now, debdiff attached, *.deb built and tested.

Changelog since last *buntu version:

mksh (39.3-1ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable. (Closes LP: #529559)
New upstream version. (Closes LP: #355883)
This integrates a workaround for a gcc bug. (cf. LP: #375604)
Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- debian/control, debian/rules: Exclude dietlibc on powerpc/ppc64
  and sparc (cf. LP: #381332)
- debian/README.Debian, debian/mksh.postinst: Hardcode installing
mksh as /bin/sh to false (cf. LP: #348872) but retain debconf
infrastructure so that, if set to true in old installations, it
will correctly be removed on upgrade

 -- Thorsten Glaser Sun, 28 Feb 2010 17:32:01 +

mksh (39.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream version R39c; shortened ChangeLog since R39:
- [tg] Build system, code, docs and testsuite cleanup, also style(9)
- [tg] Parse and evaluate ${parameter op word} correctly
- [tg] Fix possible SIGSEGV in interactive mode bind builtin due to
  mis-optimisation of gcc combined with a bogus prototype;
discovered by Grml.org's Frank Terbeck (ft), thanks!
- [tg] Clean up some more strict *roff or compiler warnings: dashes,
undefined macros; casting errors (constness, signedness, type
width/class) and catch possibly unaligned pointer dereferences
early; remove code/rodata redundancies, plug memory leaks
- [smultron] Tweak the manual page: point out the word “colour”
- [tg] Optimise dot.mkshrc DJB’s CDB hash implementations; add Bob
Jenkins’ one-at-a-time hash (standard and leading-bit
initialised); fix signedness in expressions; let the hashes use
stdin if "$*" is empty, like Lb64{en,de}code; use
  “[[ -o utf8-mode ]]” ipv “[[ $- = *U* ]]”
- [tg] Build.sh portability fixes: missing prerequisite headers;
ensure $CC is never called without $CFLAGS; fix test.sh, et al.
- [tg] Optimise internal variable representation; use one-at-a-time
  hash; cache hash values for faster resizing at zero memory cost;
clean up hash table (keytab) code; switch hash table collision
resolution algorithm to Python’s; prepare for later changes
- [tg] Fix type errors in the source code (int → bool, size_t,
  mksh_uari_t)
- [tg] Fix “${foo:bar:$baz}” not working (missing substitute() call)
- [tg] Implement “typeset ±a” as nop
- [tg] Support ksh93-like “${!f...@]}” listing the keys (indicēs) of
  all set array elements
- [tg] Support bash/ksh93-like “array=([key]=value …)” and
  (additionally) “set ±A array -- [key]=value …” to directly
  specify indicēs to use
- [tg] Document the optional, unsupported, printf(1) builtin in TFM
- [tg] Replace realpath(3) dependency and internally used
get_phys_path() pdksh code with own implementation; always offer
  the realpath builtin
- [tg] Implement nameref='typeset -n' (bounded variables) like AT&T
  ksh93 but with mksh-style nested/dynamic scoping and on-use
resolving; they cannot currently be stored in an array though
- [tg] Add “chdir” builtin doing the same as “cd” special builtin
- [tg, David Korn] Document more differences between mksh (and
pdksh) and AT&T ksh (or, more specific, ksh88, ksh93) in the
  manual page
- [tg] Support “'a'” as an alternative to “1#a”, like ksh93 does
- [tg] Add ksh’s “test -o ?foo”: true if “foo” is a valid shell
option, where “foo” can be “xtrace” or “-x” or “+x” (these three
  are equivalent)
- [tg] Support “$'…'” backslash-expanding single-quoted strings, as
requested by David Korn, with almost the same syntax and semantics
- [tg] Unify backslash expansion code (C style vs. print builtin)
- [tg] Support “function stop () {” bashism
- [tg] For several items in the source code that require order to be
kept, provide from multiply-included header files; sort correctly
- [tg] Get rid of unneeded FMONITOR (-m) for shells without job
control; sync list of flags, comments and manpage with reality
- [tg] If MKSH_SMALL, reduce size by removing editor functionality
- [tg] Support VT100 emulator style {Ctrl,Alt}-CurLeft/Right keycode
sequences with new vt100-hack emacs bind function (LP: #355883)
- [cnuke, tg] Remove more, like GNU bash extensions, from MKSH_SMALL
- [tg] Remove more functionality, such as Emacs command line editing
mode bind key macros, and other extensions, from MKSH_SMALL to
  help floppies
- [tg] Make forking and subshells less expensive wrt. random state
- [tg] Build and source code fixes for / caught by SUNWcc, HP aCC,
pcc, DEC ucode cc (MIPS), GCC, LLVM clang
- [tg] Make undef/def MKSH_NOVI into 0/1 MKSH_S_NOVI build flag
- [tg] Get rid of "U getenv" in nm output, we already import environ
- [tg] Simplify $RANDOM handling: reads are now either arc4random(3)
  (if available: set +o

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: okular

When I display PDFs (e.g. magazines purchased by download) in dual page view,
sometimes it happens that okular shows two pages next to each other that would
not face each other in a printed version.
This happens if the pdf does not contain the title page. The okular does not
show the two facing pages but is out of sync and displays two pages next to
each other that are not supposed to face each other.

A simple Button that displays a additional empty page with page number 0

[Bug 529559] [NEW] Please merge mksh 39.3-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-02-28 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mksh

Binary package hint: mksh

I just uploaded a new version of mksh to Debian sid, and would like to request
that it be merged into *buntu universe. Debdiff against the sid version will be
attached. I will have actually tested this in a lucid chroot, updated today.

As I could not test running it as /bin/sh I’m continuing to deactivate this
facility (and document it in README.Debian this time).

LP: #355883 is fixed in this release, all four of
{Ctrl,Alt}-Cur{Left,Right} work.

LP: #375604 does no longer need an *buntu patch, because I put some
workaround code into the Debian package already, taken from the OpenSuSE
Build Service package and tested there.

LP: #381332 had no activity, thus the workaround had to stay.

[Bug 529560] [NEW] New upstream release (0.5.0)

2010-02-28 Thread Julien Lavergne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxde-common

lxde-common have a new upstream released. Changes between 0.4.2 and 0.5.0 are
bug fixed or already in the package (change in configuration files, split of
icon theme).
Debian have already package it, and include more bug fixes, so a sync/merge
will be usefull.

[Bug 529563] [NEW] Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-02-28 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Hello,
Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 Live CD.
The problem I am having is the live cd will only get as far as the cd's boot
menu, and when I select either install or live cd, something shuts off my
monitor and the power button blinks (no output to monitor I think). I tried
this several times without setting special boot options, and several times with
random boot options but I still can't get it too keep power to my monitor. This
also happens with the check cd for errors option. Being that I have no display
afterwards and the live cd is session only I have no log files or error
messages to look at. If it is not the Nouveau drivers, then it might be
ubiquity or xorg crashing my display.

It is not a problem with my monitor, because I am running Lucid alpha3
as we speak. Also, virtualbox ose in Karmic had no problem running the
iso image of Lucid-alpha3. I md5'ed the iso and it checks out fine. The
problem is only booting the cd from my PC. Another observation is the
lack of display does not prevent Lucid Alpha 3 live cd from booting into
a live session, because after 5 minutes or more I can here the ubuntu
login sound eventually.

I finally managed to get alpha 3 installed on my computer, but to do
that I had to perform the upgrade (update-manager -d) over my 9.10
installation. I couldn't use a free partition like I was hoping. Prior
to the Karmic to Lucid upgrade, I installed the proprietary Nvidia
graphics card driver to ensure I had working drivers after the upgrade.
I believe the driver series was 185. This driver does not show up in the
window of the hardware manager in Lucid alpha3. Instead, it shows I have
two of them activated, but not currently in use. The names of them are
"version current" and "nVida/Riva/TNT/GeForce".

My graphics card is a MSI branded Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCI Express x16. A
list of my hardware is included with this bug report.
thanks,

[Bug 522645] Re: [MIR] chromium-browser

2010-02-28 Thread Evan Martin
While Chris is right, I expect our policy for security updates will
probably not make you too happy.

We provide three "channels" of Google Chrome, which are correspond
roughly to something like a "stable", "master", and "next" branch in
other projects. These channels are aggressively autoupdated with fixes
(security and otherwise) on Win/Mac such that versions other than the
newest on each channel are effectively lost in the noise. This means we
have a good record for getting fixes quickly out, but it also means that
we do not provide security fixes for any non-current releases.

You can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome#Release_history
for the release history of our stable releases. With each such release,
security fixes for older major versions are immediately stopped. I
understand that Ubuntu tries to provide long term support for some
Ubuntu releases, and that this may be incompatible with our release
process. I don't have any good answer for you.

[Bug 529557] [NEW] quadrapassel does not allow user to add high score

2010-02-28 Thread Asif Youssuff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Steps to reproduce:

1. Play game (I play until I get at least one cleared row).
2. End the game by making the blocks fill up vertically.

What happens

Quadrapassel scores window appears, with no way to add the new high
score

Expected behavior

A dialog should appear allowing the user to add their name to the high
scores list.

[Bug 521533] [NEW] Bad data handling -> Security Hole

2010-02-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: okular

Okular has a "feature" to allow users to fill out forms within PDF
files. It appears to work fine, if you just use Okular - you may or may
not notice the oddity that it doesn't have a "Save" menu option, but it
seems to save anyway.

You can close the PDF, reopen it with Okular, and your form data is
still there.

But then you open it with Adobe Acrobat, and your form data is NOT
there.

It turns out that Okular has a horribly conceived "feature" to let you
store form data - but it puts the form data in a file other than the PDF
document - it puts it under ~user/.kde/share/apps/okular/docdata.

Not only is this a stupidly implemented feature, it is a huge security
hole for those of us that do things like fill out tax forms.

When I fill out my tax form PDF, I fully expect that my data is going to
be saved within the PDF. So when I lock the PDF file inside of an
encrypted volume, my data is secure.

Imagine my surprise, to find all of my tax data floating out in
user/.kde/share/apps/okular/docdata/randomFileName.pdf.xml

Okular should have this "feature" immediately stripped from ubuntu to
protect Ubuntu's users from this poorly designed application.

[Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-28 Thread KeithM
madbiologist said "You must be getting frustrated."

Yeah, that's actually an understatement.

The bottom line is that I can't keep my hardware here idle all day,
doing nothing, besides doing stability tests. I've got a brand new
machine I've built which is essentially unusable. It's my fault for
selecting a brand new processor, integrated graphics, etc. Bleeding
edge indeed.

I'm sure this problem will eventually get addressed, but I need to start
using this machine now. I've already wasted too many cycles.

CentOS 5.3 and Fedora 12 seem to work fine, and I have no idea what that
tells us about the problem.

Thanks for the help & support.

Keith

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid
