Hi again! The cooling- fan seems to work fine again when I boot the live-cd with the nolapic parameter. :-D But I am not sure how to get it to work if I installed Lucid on my harddisk. :-? I hope someone will get in to this issue and make sure that an Acer 5315 laptop will function without having to set the nolapic parameter manually. Ethernet is a new Yukon card (model Optima), supported by 2.6.33 onward (could be easy backported), driver sky2. Xorg work with latest intel driver and 2.6.33, but goes blank screen with 2.6.32 and older (you may use vesa or fb driver in the meanwhile), I haven't yet identified the fixing commit to backport. Sound is still being worked on, I did get some headphone output with latest alsa-driver git and model=generic. Sorry, my above comment got posted before I was done writing. Before applying Malcolm's patch, I got: start: Job failed to start when I tried to start statd. This problem was preventing me from using NFS shares mounted by autofs. Needless to say, it was a critical problem for me that users could not access their files! I really think that this fix needs to be applied to Karmic most urgently. I can't be the only one affected. If you try to reproduce this bug, please keep in mind that it doesn't fail every time. Being a race condition it succeeds sometimes and fails sometimes. And finally: Thank you THANK YOU to Malcolm for providing the explanation as well as a solution. I had been tearing my hair out over this one! It took me hours of work to track down this solution. Public bug reported: When I plug-in my USB LAN controller, dmesg prints [ 848.677130] usb 6-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 [ 848.862347] usb 6-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 848.873186] dm9601: disagrees about version of symbol usbnet_set_msglevel [ 848.873195] dm9601: Unknown symbol usbnet_set_msglevel This happens in newly installed 2.6.31-20-generic Kubuntu Karmic kernel, as well as in still available on my machine 2.6.31-19-generic, 2.6.31-14-generic and 2.6.31-16-generic kernels. This does not happen in my oldest installed kernel, 2.6.31-11-generic. I'm running Lucid in Virtualbox (PUEL) and the same thing happens when I install the guest additions, but I have an Nvidia card (9400) in the host system. Should I open a new bug report or add further details to this one?
