[Bug 537158] [NEW] Firefox infinite loop, cursor changing between pointer and hand
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.5 Firefox got to infinite loop with cursor switching between pointer and hand when trying to click on one of { login input, submit button, href-img, another tab } which were right next to each other. I'll keep that infinite-loop process running for now, some gdb snapshots of what it is doing available at http://www.hut.fi/u/iheino/ff/ in case they could be useful. Have also seen the cursor alternate between pointer and hand on a number of sites before, but then thought of that as just a (likely hard-to-trace) cosmetic bug and thus did not report this earlier. But since it is now in infinite loop, there could be an opportunity for debugging it. Next question is how to get more useful information out of it? Hi Fabrice - I don't think any additional work is required here -- the final debdiff is attached already. [Bug 537136] [NEW] try_mounts vs newly_mounted
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall While reading mountall.c, I noticed what seems to be a minor issue. The while-loop in try_mounts() depends on newly_mounted=TRUE, but its initial value is FALSE until mark_mounted() manages to find something. [Bug 537137] [NEW] No non-destructive way for a normal user to escape frozen full-screen apps
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Full screen apps freezing is a common problem in both Windows and Ubuntu (irrespective of hardware or version, I do Ubuntu installs for my friends and always run in to this). (The most recent incarnation of this is the development version of Battle for Wesnoth (svn rev 41526): the quit button freezes the app instead of quitting. But I'm mentioning it only as an example, since it's a very common occurence with SDL or OpenGL apps.) On Windows you'd try Alt-tab, the Windows key that calls the menu, or Ctrl-Alt-Delete to call the task manager, and in my experience 90% of the time the app'll successfully minimize, you'll kill it with a right- click, and will be able to use whatever other apps were running. Let's take the point of view of an average Joe user that encounters the same thing in Ubuntu. He's been enjoying a comfortable desktop environment and has little technical knowledge. Assuming he even heard about them, he can try: - Ctrl-Alt-F#: he is dumped to a terminal where he has as much chance of damaging his system as successfully killing the faulty app and going back to his Gnome session. He'll probably end up rebooting out of fear of the terminal. - Alt-SysRq-K: in addition of being new and very little known, this will kill the X server along with any open application. - Alt-SysRq-REISUB: is very little known, and will kill all apps, period. - Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-tab, the windows key, or even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace that used to kill the X server won't do anything. The most likely outcomes for Average Joe User are therefore: - He loses all data from open apps. (Let's imagine he fired some sdl game to take a break from writing his school paper and forgot to save -- he loses all his data.) This is not even remotely acceptable. - He doesn't know what to do reboots the computer, and not only loses all data from open apps, but may end up with an unbootable OS (been there, done that). This is not even remotely acceptable. Now, I've seen some people including Ubuntu devs or moderators argue that it's the games' problem, and that we should take it up with those apps' devs. Wrong, I say. This is an issue of solidity and stability with the Ubuntu OS. Face it, freezes are VERY common in 3D apps, even under Windows with commercial games (in my experience it's more common under GNU/Linux systems). The ostrich tactic won't work here, we need to recognize that the problem of full-screen apps freezing is not gonna go away soon no matter how much we pester dev teams. Bugs are part of life and that's it. Windows provides a way to gracefully escape from those freezes most of the time, without damage to the user's data or workflow. *Where is Ubuntu's method to deal with the problem?* -- There, I've done the best I could as a user: reporting the bug. It's definitely not a mere feature request, since at the moment we're speaking it has nasty consequences on Ubuntu users who expect to find a more human-oriented operating system. Since I'm not an expert interface designer it's not my job to design a solution, but I can still offer a suggestion: find some unused key combination, hook it directly with the X server and make it work like an emergency Alt-tab to hide the frozen full-screen app and go back to your desktop. And then widely publicize it so Ubuntu users know it just as well as Windows users know Alt-tab and Ctrl-Alt-Del. But I'm sure that with your collective brains, you can figure something better. Please ask for extra hardware info if you need it, but honestly I wouldn't see the point of that: this is a well-known problem that's cross-platform and cross-distribution, basically everywhere a full- screen app can freeze. It's about time someone tackles and solves the problem, and I hope Ubuntu will be the distro that dares to take this step forward. Please also don't mark this bug as a duplicate after superficial reading. This is not the same thing as for instance bug #63245, in which the reporter is merely asking for a convenient feature, for apps that run correctly and can be exited the normal way. Lastly, I assigned the bug to the xorg package for good reasons: please discuss any changes here before hastily changing this assignment. [Bug 516329] Re: TouchPad buttons don't work on HP Mini 210 (1030NR)
The Synaptics touchpad in question is a new model, known as a "clickpad". It actually has a single physical button underneath the bottom edge of the touchpad, and the driver is supposed to determine whether the click is "left" or "right" by looking at finger position on the pad. It's important to realize that the "workaround" that people are using basically makes the pad appear as a PS/2 mouse to the kernel. This means no edge or two-finger scrolling, and the touchpad will stay active when typing. Not optimal. There are two patches in development. One is to the Synaptics X driver; the other is to the kernel. BOTH of the patches will be necessary to get the proper behaviour. Read the mailing list thread posted by Paul for details. Both the Ubuntu X team and the Kernel team will need to collaborate on a fix. [Bug 537133] [NEW] mountall issues with nfsroots
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall I think I've found two bugs in mountall-2.7 related to nfsroots. This report describes both, since working around one exposes the other. The first bug is a dependency issue, circular and otherwise. Unless the nfsroot is mounted with "nolock", NFS locking depends on rpc.statd, which depends on portmap, which depends on the "local-filesystems" event (in /etc/init/portmap.conf). mountall will never provide this event because it treats the rootfs as "local" even if it's networked, for the sake of daemons that need to wait for the rootfs to be remounted rw. The problem is that portmap.conf needs access to /etc (ro), /var/run (rw) and /lib/init/rw (rw). A dependency on "local-filesystems" essentially means / and /tmp. Changing the dependency to "virtual- filesystems" would be more correct, but I'm not entirely certain that remounting / should depend on any general *-filesystems events. It gets messier in statd.conf, which doesn't call out any filesystem dependencies, yet requires portmap to be running. It tries to directly "start portmap" which fails because the mentioned filesystems aren't writable yet. Portmap and statd will start successfully later, but not in time to satisfy the rootfs dependency. The second bug is when one tries to work around the above problems by specifying "nolock" in /etc/fstab for the nfsroot. In this case we land in mountall.c at the bottom of run_mount() where the is_remote() test causes spawn() to be called with wait=FALSE. spawn() then calls nih_child_add_watch() which is supposed to eventually call back to spawn_child_handler(), but it appears to fail to connect: spawn: mount -n -a -t nfs -o remount, nolock 16.1.1.2:/export/romano / spawn: mount / [272] spawn: calling nih_child_add_watch for / init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (0) for process 272 The third line is debugging I added. If spawn_child_handler() had been called, we would have seen an additional line: mount / [272] exited normally I didn't dig into libnih to figure out why this isn't working. Rather I changed the test on which wait=FALSE depends, since it seems like mountall should be waiting for the rootfs. This works, see attached patch, though it only fixes the non-ideal "nolock" case. [Bug 537125] [NEW] [Lucid A3] oem-config in Xubuntu 64bit OEM install causes X crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: oem-config Performed an OEM install of Xubuntu amd64 on a VirtualBox VM. Install was successful, and after reboot, system was running. I ran the OEM-Config button on the desktop and got the message that said "oem-config will run on the next reboot". Rebooted the system. Instead of getting the configuration I got a plain brown background and a mouse pointer. I hit the Enter key, and X crashed, and there was a barely readable Python stack trace dumped to the screen that said something about OS Error, File Not Found when running ubiquity-dm. So either X is not working (though it DID work fine until I tried running oem-config) or oem-config is causing X to crash somehow. --- Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" - Alpha amd64 (20100308) Package: oem-config 2.1.32 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-15.22-generic Tags: lucid Uname: Linux 2.6.32-15-generic x86_64 UserGroups: ** Affects: oem-config (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-collected ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: oem-config Performed an OEM install of Xubuntu amd64 on a VirtualBox VM.
