[Bug 539424] Re: installation hangs while trying to install linux-headers-2.6.32-16

2010-03-16 Thread Colin Watson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 537241 ***

I suspect you'll find it's just very slow; this is a known regression
that we're discussing with dpkg upstream. You can use ext3 as a
workaround.

[Bug 539300] Re: [Lucid] Network Manager Applet Wi-Fi icon always shows red exclamation mark

2010-03-16 Thread Matt Goodall
I'm seeing something similar using latest Lucid packages on a Dell Mini
10v with Broadcom wireless. However, the icon is only greyed-out with a
red exclamation mark on my home network; at work the icon is as
expected. In both cases I have a fully working network connection and
the Connection Information window shows sensible information.

So, it seems to be affected by the network I'm connecting to: home is a
Belkin router and a 192.168.0.x net, work is a Netgear router and a
192.168.1.x net. Both are authenticated using WPA/WPA2.

[Bug 525710] Re: package linux-image-2.6.31-19-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive

2010-03-16 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 539464] [NEW] Output connector does not change when plugin in/out external speakers

2010-03-16 Thread Joshua Lückers
Public bug reported:

Output lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)

What I expect to happen:
When plugging in external speakers the Output Connector should change from

What happens instead:
The Output Connector does not change, doing it manually does work fine.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Kazade
Mark, I appreciate you commenting on this issue. Might I suggest that if
you do want to relocate the controls to the left hand side consider at
least leaving the close button on the right for this LTS release - for
consistency (pretty much all tabs, multiple document interfaces etc.
have the close on the right and it's quite late in the cycle to try
patching everything from Ooo to Firefox to Nautilus etc.)

This is also what Ivanka suggested, and I came up with the same solution
when I tried to work out where I'd put the buttons (
http://kazade.livejournal.com/4695.html ). After using it a while it's
quite a nice solution, it also looks consistent between windows with all
buttons and dialog/toolbox windows that only have a close button.

Next release you could then move the close button across to the left if
that is what is required, but it's worth noting that if the buttons are
on the left they will be directly under the hoverable Activities
button in gnome-shell. As we don't completely know what Gnome 3 is going
to bring I think making this change in an LTS, which you may need to
revert, might not be the best idea.

[Bug 490632] Re: Ubuntu misinterprets available battery charge on laptop and shuts down in 2 minutes even with 98% charge remaining!

2010-03-16 Thread santq
I have this same problem, but I know it's my battery that is to blame,
since it reported wrong battery status even with Windows.

The problem is that Ubuntu nicely presumes the battery is working like
it should, and keeps shutting down even when the battery is full. It
gets quiet annoying after a while. Why there is no option to do nothing?
This remind me of all the horrible Windows memories, how the operating
system presumes I'm too stupid and get confused if I have too many
options.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-03-16 Thread Dahaniel
Bug is persisting in Karmic and I agree that it is CRITICAL!
When I first switched to Linux I ran into this bug very often now I kind of
learned to live with it (which doesn't make it better).

Every couple of days, this results in data corruption and my filesystem
being remounted read-only:

Those messages generally appear at the end of dmesg after the event,
just after the hard resetting link message. I then have to boot a live
CD and manually run fsck, as I can no longer boot the laptop.

This is happening every couple of days generally, although it happened 3
times in one day last Thursday.

I did contemplate it being a hardware issue, but I tried running the
kernel from Karmic for a couple of days, and that worked ok without a
single error message

[Bug 539169] Re: Create light sound theme for Lucid

2010-03-16 Thread think_Ubuntu
I think, it is very practically if ubuntu have sounds for mounting and
unmounting devices. Yes, i know the os of Microsoft use this but i think
this increase the usability for handicaped people in Ubuntu.

I have created one sound for connecting and one sound for disconnecting
devices.

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-16 Thread Eugene San
I can't think of any authoritative contact.
Anyway, If existence of MBR (at least protective MBR) is vital part of GPT/EFI
specification then it's ok for Linux to demand it.
Linux could just ignore absence of MBR in GPT, but we can't treat its behavior
as bug.

[Bug 535502] Re: package linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic 2.6.31-20.57 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2

2010-03-16 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Diff Handy
2c

I decided to stick with the buttons on the left after the change, to see
how it worked out for me. I'm still getting used to it but having the
maximise to far left, I find useful, it's the easiest to locate and the
button I use most. I've noticed that I don't (or haven't so far) closed
any windows by mistake - conversely it's harder to close windows when I
want to. Again, I'm still in the mode of learning the new position and
though I no longer go over to the right with my pointer, the button
order is still something I have to look at.

From an aesthetic point of view, I find the menu and control clumping to
the left to be slightly too busy and have found the space on the right
being blank to emphasise this. There appears to be a plan for this
though so maybe it'll even out the look. Overall the Ambience and
Radiance themes are really very nice. Radiance seems particularly well
done in comparison to a number of other dark themes I've used. The
palette in Ambience seems to work well.

People don't like change, I guess. It'll be interesting to see the
reaction to Gnome Shell.

[Bug 530605] Re: gvfs-mount doesn't always work. gvfsd-smb starts using 100% cpu.

2010-03-16 Thread DarrenShare
@Sebastien. It Seems to the same bug. This one was raised first though
so technically it's a duplicate of this one ;)

I am concerned by the lack of official response to any of these bugs by
the Gnome team. Given that mounting shares is pretty much gvfs' sole
function you'd think they'd be looking at it by now. This is a total
showstopper for me with regard to using Lucid.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Louis Taylor
This change does not really affect me, the only thing I find wrong with this
decision is that ubuntu users where not told about any of the changes which
would happen, and had to find it out themselves from the alpha release :(

On 16 March 2010 09:52, meborc meb...@gmail.com wrote:

Mark - how about you moving the exiting new stuff you are going to
implement to the left side, and leaving buttons to the right? :) or is
the menu going to be the obstacle then?

Why is the right upper corner so important? I guess it has something to
do with the indication pop-ups. But LOWER right corner is also a nice
place to put stuff, so you could leave the buttons on the right side and
implement the new stuff in the lower right corner.

Sorry if this has suggested earlier, too many comments to dig through

  Workaround
To revert to old layout, enter in terminal:

 menu:minimize,maximize,close

 --OR--

 Use this PPA:

[Bug 532756] Re: [GeForce 6100 GO] Image and Xv corruption

2010-03-16 Thread Daniele Smartango
Sorry, this do not make sense to me, corruption is random, sometime happen
sometime no ...
Anyway disabling acceleration is not an option if someone want to use pc for
something else than have nice picture on monitor:
every time I scroll I have to wait 2 second for monitor to refresh ...
for some reason application (or gtk or other library) use heavy algorithm
for scrolling that make things more slowly than a 15 year old pc.
The only option for scrolling in firefox (continuous) is disabled.

I reenabled accel, I randomly get no corrupted screen, tough I set NoXVideo true
but it is not used.

There is an option to disable nouveau for some chipset and use nv?
thus option for who want to test nouveau on go 6100
is to use edges archives

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread vervelover
Mark your answer makes no sense at all. IF you decide to add something
new on the right side in 10.10, then switch the buttons in 10.10, and
people will get use to that much quicker, 'cause they will see WHY you
did that. If the change is in 10.04, it will just look like a nonsense
decision, but it actually IS nonsense.

Do you really think people can better get used to something that isn't
there and makes their life harder, than actually seeing why the change
is there? I don't need 6 months to get used to something useful, nobody
does. If the change has a sense, you get used in a day. But it 10.04 it
has no sense, at all.

[Bug 510067] Re: ext3 default compile time option should be changed from writeback to ordered

2010-03-16 Thread Andy Whitcroft
This was released in 2.6.32-12.16 for Lucid but unfortuanatly the commit
was marked to be ignored so this bug didn't get closed by the janitor:

  commit 1182c7174e2844583451fac2fd9013543b095adf
  Author: Surbhi Palande surbhi.pala...@canonical.com
  Date: Thu Jan 21 01:05:32 2010 +

UBUNTU: [Config] ext3 defaults to ordered mode

BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/510067
Ignore: yes

To prevent a security threat of older data being inadvertently exposed, the
default mount option of ext3 should be ordered instead of writeback. This
patch enables the compile time option CONFIG_EXT3_DEFAULTS_TO_ORDERED to
ensure that an ext3 fs mounts with the data=ordered mode.

[Bug 520306] Re: package libc-bin 2.10.1-0ubun tu15 failed to install/upgrade: Unterprozess dpkg-deb -- control gab den Fehlerwert 2 zurück

2010-03-16 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 539477] [NEW] Fn+F8 key combination doesn't work on Dell E5500

2010-03-16 Thread Chris Coulson
Public bug reported:

The Fn+F8 key combination on my Dell E5500 does not work in Lucid (this
key combination should be able to switch video modes). Debugging with
xev, it seems that the key combination is mapped to the letter p at
the X layer. Debugging further down the stack shows that the scancode
from Fn+F8 also matches that of the p key.

This combination worked properly in Karmic.

Using showkey -k, the keycodes are as follows:

[p] = 25
[Fn]+[F8] = 25 (although I also see keycode 125 as I press F8, and I see 125
release as I let go of the Fn key)

Using showkey -s, the scancodes are as follows:

[p] = 0x19 0x99
[Fn]+[F8] = 0x19 0x99 (although I also see 0xE0 0x5B as I press F8, and I see
0xE0 0xDB as I release Fn)
