[Bug 560686] [NEW] Shouldn't use rmadison
Public bug reported: Hi This is to collect my thoughts on dropping the need for rmadison which seems to be the reason for the devscripts Depends/Recommends. Currently, vm-builder/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/distro.py uses rmadison to query the version (particularly the ABI version) of the Xen kernel to use for the guest. This is used as a default for the --xen-kernel and --xen-ramdisk filenames in the generated config file. I understand that the expectation is that the host has the kernels for the guest system installed. What's wrong with the current approach? - devscripts is heavy and pulls in many deps not desirable on a server install (mostly useful on developers' systems) - rmadison introduces a runtime dependency on the network and Launchpad / CGIs in particular; that is, if Launchpad is down, rmadison fails; rmadison fails multiple times per day against the Debian servers too (albeit vm-builder doesn't support Debian ATM); it might be desirable to run vm-builder in environments without access to the public Internet / Launchpad, or during Launchpad downtimes, and passsing --xen-kernel / --xen-ramdisk is slightly less handy - this is not friendly to Ubuntu derivatives or other Debian derivatives not providing a rmadison service, or for local xen kernels, but these require porting anyway *If* vm-builder really needs to query this data, I would recommend parsing the Packages.gz files of the target (perhaps from $target/var/lib/apt/*_Packages). However, I believe it's useful to have the kernel package installed within the xen guest, to provide the corresponding modules. So I would propose that: - vm-builder installs linux-image-xen (or linux-image-server, or linux-image-virtual etc.) in the xen guests - vm-builder uses the $target/boot/ramdisk and $target/boot/kernel files (without the $target prefix) for the xen config, unless overriden on the command-line Does the proposed approach makes sense? Thanks, ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: ubuntu-vm-builder 0.12.3-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-19.28-generic 2.6.32.10+drm33.1 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-19-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Sun Apr 11 15:10:34 2010 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=fr_FR:fr:en_GB:en PATH=(custom, user) LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/zsh SourcePackage: vm-builder ** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug lucid -- Shouldn't use rmadison https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560686 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 369575] Re: Why is /usr/share/pam-configs/krb5 specifying minimum_uid= ?
Steve Langasek steve.langa...@canonical.com writes: Honestly, I don't see any good choices at the packaging level for permuting the pam_krb5 options used. Yeah, that's what it was looking like to me as well. Why wouldn't it work to have krb5-config do a one-time adjustment of /etc/krb5.conf on upgrade (w/ version guard), and give libpam-krb5 a versioned dependency on the version of krb5-config that implements this? Hm, yes, I suppose I could try that. I don't see an obvious problem with it, at least. I'll run that past Sam and see what he thinks about it. I'm a little concerned by the implications for sites that maintain a site-wide krb5.conf file that they distribute to all of their systems and don't have this setting in it because it doesn't apply uniformly to all of their systems. In that situation, they really need to use PAM configuration instead, and this transition could easily leave them without a minimum_uid setting. But I suppose that's what NEWS.Debian is for. As for your original problem, Daniel, - you already have to set the non-default minimum_uid in krb5.conf; why couldn't you automatically apply the same setting to /etc/pam.d/common-* by the same mechanism? There may be room for improvement in the package defaults, but ISTM that this shouldn't stand in the way of you solving your immediate problem - especially given that you're decidedly not using the package defaults anyway. Right -- if you're already distributing a krb5.conf with this setting, surely the same mechanism could be used to override the PAM configuration as well. -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- Why is /usr/share/pam-configs/krb5 specifying minimum_uid= ? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to kerberos-configs in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 560492] [NEW] problem of sampling rate with default output
Public bug reported: I discovered the problem by listening a linear chirp on wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Linchirp.ogg. At about 1 sec, a second chirp can be heard. [Bug 530541] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb()
Hrm... If I'm reading the above correctly, desktopcouch-service is crashing twice (around midnight) then being ignored until (around midnight) the next day. So, now I'm thinking that deleting the pid file was simply a coincidence, e.g. mimicking a fix. Still, that doesn't answer why my Ubu One is working, regardless or whether (or not) desktopcouch-service is running. Maybe it's a bogus warning. I'll have to think about this for a while. LoL! [Bug 560502] [NEW] Ubuntu's ghc is compiled without HAVE_RTLDNEXT

[Bug 560485] Re: Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu4) ... hangs
Since I'm on virtualbox I restored a pre-upgrade snapshot and tried again. This worked for me: 1. Upgrade all packages that do not depend on grub-pc (or rather those that Synaptic would let me upgrade without upgrading grub-pc). 2. Upgrade only grub-pc and grub-common. This time a window popped up during the Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu4) ... phase asking what to do with my existing (non-standard) /etc/default/grub. I chose to keep it and the installation completed successfully. I presume that this window should have popped up during my previous attempts to, but for some reason it didn't and the installer appeared to hang while it was waiting for inputs from the window. -- Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu4) ... hangs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560485 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
