This enables us to upgrade libvirt without interruping running VM's, so we want to only conditionally shut down VM's. What I've done on one of my Hardy boxes is to check $0 to see if the init script was invoked as K??libvirt-bin. If so, I assume we're being shut down and then I go and shut down the virtual machines. If invoked any other way, it just stops libvirt, not the VM's. To achieve something similar with upstart jobs, there's an environment variable that tells us why libvirt- bin is being stopped. Try to look my *ugly* workaround[1] : /etc/init.d/sendsings is just parallelizing killing any process not in upstart pool of tracked ones. So, when upstart shutdown libvirt-bin, almost for sure libvirt-bin won't find any active guests because they have been killed before by /etc/init.d/sendsing (killing those vm processes seems very quick). While this is good for libvirt-bin independence from kvm guests processes, this make fine grain control of guests shutdown harder, and one may wonder if it's not kvm itelsef that should send ACPI shutdown signal to guests, and not libvirt. I have another suspect: upstart may failing here. Doesn't libvirt-bin forks here to create kvm guests? Shouldn't expect daemon upstart stanza track daemons that fork more than once? If so, shouldn't libvirt- bin upstart job track these guests processes too? I have to ask in upstart mailing list. Public bug reported: I'm running vmbuilder 0.12.3-0ubuntu1 on Lucid server. vmbuilder apparently runs and assembles a machine image without error, but the resulting VM just doesn't run properly, going extremely slowly (about 50 mins to reach a login prompt, though login isn't possible as it doesn't respond to keystrokes), listing multiple errors on boot (see screen shots - ignore the ^[[[A bits, they are just stray keystrokes). It also reports soft lockup errors like in bug 333201. Linux myserver 2.6.32-21-server #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 09:17:34 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux The build command I'm using is: --suite lucid \ --flavour virtual \ --arch amd64 \ --libvirt qemu:///system \ --hostname vm2 \ --user user \ --name user \ --pass default \ --ip 192.168.0.100 \ --dest ./vm2 I think this is a vmbuilder problem because KVM machine images obtained from elsewhere run fast and trouble-free on the same server and environment using the same kvm config, so the only difference is the image file. In the new `upstart` script /etc/init/mysql.conf, the analogous status check was changed to a while ! ... loop which means the script will spin forever when your server has a problem? while ! /usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=$HOME/debian.cnf ping do sleep 1 done It seems that there are a few common errors that are easily resolvable, for example Can't connect to MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' error or issues with the debian-sys- maint user that some of us have from time-to-time, but there appears to be a chicken/egg scenario here caused by this infinite loop. As a side note, I've now completely lost my /etc/init/mysql.conf file and can't seem to get it back through the package manager regardless of purging/reinstalling packages. I'd guess so since kvm insists on running as root! I've had the same problem with the vm folder and image owned by me and root, so I guess it's not that. Do you have a known-good config I can use to generate a VM image to test with, possibly compare it with the image created on a machine that doesn't show this problem? Re ownership, I've tried running with the folder owned by me, and changed it to root later on, not both at once. I've found an workaround: adding vga=792 at the end of the entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst (i'm using the old Grub, i've dist-upgraded since hardy, passing by all releases). With that change, GDM appears correctly, the virtual terminals are ok and plymouth doesn't stays ugly (now it's displaying correctly, with Ubuntu logo. Before that, it was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.04 written on it and a progress bar).
