[Bug 561210] Re: Writing big files to NFS target causes system lock up

2010-06-06 Thread Christoph Lechleitner
If my assumption of the freeze trigger is correct, it should be possible to
provoke the problem even against fast NFS servers by setting the buffer size
extremly low, i.e. to the minimum allowed by the NFS driver.
I 'll try this out, but due to a business trip I won't happen before the end of
the upcoming week.

2010-06-06 Thread kahalla
Hey, have the same note after installing UBUNTU 10.4. Before I had no
graphical surface after installation. The same with opensuse 11.2.
Research gave me the hint that my combination of a NVidia Mainboard with
an ATI Graph card causes this bug. As a solution I found proposals to
switch off acpi, or start ubuntu with "nomodeset" I tried all that
stuff, but had no positive effect...

[Bug 484366] Re: network connection randomly drops then restarts

2010-06-06 Thread laelfrog
I have a linksys WRT350N using DDWRT.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/CA/en/support/WRT350N
Basic Settings:
Wireless Mode: AP
Wireless Network Mode: I have it configured in a "Mixed" mode (so it can run
b/g/n at the same time as opposed to "B-Only", "G-Only", "N-Only" or "BG-Mixed")
Wireless Network Name (SSID): MySSID...
Wireless Channel : 4
Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable

Wireless Security:
Security Mode: "WPA2 Personal Mixed"
WPA Algorithms: "TKIP"
WPA Shared Key:
...
Key Renewal Interval (in seconds): 3600
Sensitivity Range (ACK Timing): 2000
Network Configuration: Bridged

The Wireless Card is what came in my 2010 Unibody Macbook Pro (6,1)
It ends up being a Broadcom network controller with a deviceID of 4353
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:4353] (rev
01)

I've been using wicd for a day now without issue, which leads me to
believe that the issue may lie with NetworkManager.

What else would be helpful to attach here?

[Bug 589012] Re: totem won't do progressive download for flv videos

2010-06-06 Thread bgruber
>It does the progressive download for me with the plugin.

For what video? How do you know it's one in an FLV container? Totem's
YouTube plugin does not, as far as I can tell, allow you to choose which
format you get, except indirectly by setting your connection speed. I
notice that when I set my connection speed to 512, it won't do
progressive download on any of the videos I select, but when I set it to
Intranet/LAN, it does. It picks fmt=5 (an FLV container) when set to
512, and fmt=18 (an mp4 container) when set to Intranet.

As an example: the first URL is what I get in totem when I set my
connection speed to intranet and do a youtube search for "tron". The
second is the first result when I set my connection speed to 512 Kbps.
The only difference is the fmt=18 at the end. The first one buffers and
plays almost instantly, while the second one does not.

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=-3ODe9mqoDE&t
=vjVQa1PpcFP9ODzDI-Q1VYwCgPGh86toYtHlHFGtGFg%3D&fmt=18

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=-3ODe9mqoDE&t=vjVQa1PpcFOK2hVl0QlGv6WQBgkJznali8MnU4_ZXxo%3D

In any case, the bug is confirmed upstream.

[Bug 590504] [NEW] Integrated intel graphics GMA HD doesn't work

2010-06-06 Thread Tomas Plesek
Public bug reported:

The new Intel processors have the graphics card integrated on
themselves. As it turns out, current stable ubutnu (10.04) with all
updates applied cannot boot with this graphics adapter,.

The only working solution as of now is to: set Xorg driver to vesa and
pass i915.modeset=0 parameter to kernel in grub.

It is possible to use x-updates ppa to get newer intel driver, which
allows to use external monitor, however, if one doesn't connect external
monitor to the computer, the system won't boot. So, the workaround is
the only solution for a notebook at the moment

Seems that a newer kernel (branch 2.6.33 at minimum) and new intel
driver are both needed to get this work properly. The current Maverick
Meerkat alpha fails to boot as well.

I found a bug on LP related to this, but reported only with new
MacBooks and it's connected with ATI driver. I think that this bug
probably affects all notebooks which use Core i5 and it's integrated
graphics chip. Confirmed on 2 different Lenovo models and a Dell laptop.

[Bug 580755] Re: Login screen locks up; mouse & keyboard are disabled

2010-06-06 Thread Garry Leach
I tried another idea:

I thought that, since the lock-up occurs during the sign-on process, I
could bypass that stage by changing "login" to log me in automatically.

A little while after completing the boot menu, The message, as in
comment #2 above, appeared (There is a problem with the configuration
server. (/usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status
256).

I don't know whether the keyboard was locked at that stage, as when I
pressed "enter" nothing seemed to happen for a while (I think that the
OK button may have indicated a click; the message stayed on the screen
for a fair while). But eventually it disappeared, & the desktop was
displayed.

However, the mouse & keyboard were locked, so I could not use the PC.

Regards, Garry.

[Bug 590104] Re: ace domain format not allowed for .de nameservers

2010-06-06 Thread Manuel Domke
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: whois

  Hi,
since Ubuntu 10.04, the whois client has a new feature (or bug), which
converts domain names with special characters to the so called ace format
(müller.de --> xn--mller-kva.de) (ascii compatible).

- This only happens, when you specify any parameters. Doing "normal" whois
querys ( "whois müller.de" ) are working fine for the actual .de whois servers.
For the next generation whois servers this does not seem to work ( whois -h
whois.test.denic.de )
-
- The DENIC whois servers only accept domain ace's when the parameter "-T ace"
(only in combination: "-T dn,ace" or "-T dn,st").
+ This only happens, when you specify any parameters. Doing "normal" whois

+
+ The DENIC whois servers only accept domain ace's when the parameter "-T

So, now when asking for the domain name "müller.de" you get the message
that that domain name is valid, even if its registered.

As I could figure out, this problem is part of the whois since version
4.7. I'd recommend turning off that idn2ace conversion to solve the
  problem..

I've already tested to disable the conversion by commenting out line
- 1010,1011 and 1026,1027 in whois.c
+ 1010,1011 and 1026,1027 in whois.c and for me it worked fine!

  1011:return ret;

[Bug 561210] Re: Writing big files to NFS target causes system lock up

2010-06-06 Thread Christoph Lechleitner
My Desktop also did freeze for those 120 seconds.
I use a Gnome but there are KDE based widgets running, namely klipper.

Ac. buffer size: Larger write buffers (backed by enough RAM) defer or
eventually avoid the point at which the buffer runs full.
I think we agree that's when the freeze occurs.

Does the kernel allow some kind of temporary "overbooking" for wirite
buffers, like it does for RAM?

[Bug 177542] Re: fsck should not run at boot periodically!

2010-06-06 Thread leonidas
Saying this issue is fixed by beeing able to cancel a running fsck is like
saying running out of gas while driving a car is ok because you can always push
the car...
Of course beeing able to cancel the fsck makes it somehow bearable, but the
point is that i don't want to cancel the fsck _sometimes_, i want to cancel it
_everytime_! When i switch on the computer i want to use it now, not maybe
after 30 minutes, when the fsck is finished. The only time when i don't care
how long the computer will run, is when i switch it off.

[Bug 573469] Re: gwibber does not show anything...nothing at all

2010-06-06 Thread Morell
Hello. I have the same error. Gwibber shows nothing, does not show. I
have only my Facebook account, I have no Twitter account. Gwibber
updated my Facebook account, but does not show the update in the

[Bug 590501] [NEW] Some wrong icons in New Wave theme

2010-06-06 Thread yurik81
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-themes-ubuntu

Please look to the attached picture. On it I've marked some icons. They
are barely visible. First icon looks to bright when selecting menu,
second and third icons are too darkened.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 584814] Re: blacklist tileblit gets ignored

2010-06-06 Thread Joshua
UPDATE: I had fbcon and tileblit switched in the bug description. Both
are blacklisted so it doesn't matter.

Robert Hooker: yes I did and it's not loaded if I do init=/bin/sh anyway

Here's a captured trace of who's trying to load fbcon. I got this by
splicing modprobe on disk. Obviously I can't leave it that way or my
system won't boot next time I do update-grub.

[Bug 590496] [NEW] after upgrade (9.04->10.04) LUKS partitions on USB volumes are no longer recognized/automounted

2010-06-06 Thread Fionn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Since the upgrade from jaunty to lucid I have to manually mount LUKS partitions
from USB disks every time.

They do not show up in the usual gnome places as crypt partitions and
they there is no visible attempt (visible as in syslog) to unlock or
mount them even though the key is in the chain and all this had been
working before the upgrade. blkid seems to correctly identify the
crypted partitions so it is not the "old cryptsetup vs blkid" bug.

If you have any hints on how to debug this, I'll gladly provide more
info.

[Bug 590497] [NEW] firefox crashes with xcb_io assertion error on java applet load

2010-06-06 Thread Toke Høiland-Jørgensen

java version "1.6.0_18"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.8) (6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1)

[Bug 539772] Re: [MASTER] Lucid 2.6.32-16 crashed to login screen - miCopyRegion

2010-06-06 Thread boblinux
This patch fixed two similar issues to me :

- from v10.04 on x86_64, connected into an xterm in ssh onto a v10.04 on
i686 : changing to *some* directories, or moving *some* files on the
i686 computer lead to an X crash on the x86_64 box;

- running konqueror on the x86_64 box, I wanted to rename a file from a
remote directory mounted through NFS : hitting in order to have
the file renamed triggered the crash.

It seems that this patch fixed everything !

Well done !

BTW : as a not-so-young Unix sysadmin, I am a bit disappointed that such
a basic bug can happen in the Unix world. But fortunately what seems to
be a sufficient fix was delivered quickly. Thanks.

sudo reboot

I think you need to log out and log back in after amending your ~/.profile for
it to work. Did Banshee crash after you attempted this? I can't really tell
from the log, as I don't understand the language it is in. It does look like
your D-Bus daemon is not running, though.

Perhaps something like "LANG=C banshee --debug" in a terminal may help, after
logging off and logging back in.

[Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot

2010-06-06 Thread Paolo Sammicheli
I just try to reproduce the bug and with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 i386 and
it's working.

In a fresh installation I added a new cable connection called "static
ip". I filled it with a static ip, netmask and default gateway. I also
selected "connect automatically" and "available to all users".

Then I edited the "Auto Eth0" connection and I de-selected "connect
automatically". Rebooting it connect with the "static ip" connection.

Could you possibly try to do the same and comment here if Ubuntu 10.04
it's affected?

Thanks in advance

[Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot

2010-06-06 Thread Paolo Sammicheli
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the
bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It
would help us a lot if you could test it with the current Ubuntu version
(10.04).

[Bug 463791] Re: package docbook-xsl 1.75.1+dfsg-1 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-06-06 Thread Daniel Leidert
You have removed the system and the package catalog. Therefor the
removal of entities went wrong. But because they are still registered in
/var/lib/xml-core, which you probably did *not* purge too together, you
ended up in a situation, that shouldn't occur - an entity (still)
registered with a different value.

This is not a bug in docbook-xsl, except you can explain, how the system
and the package catalog got lost by interaction with docbook-xsl.

[Bug 549217] Re: security updates not installed daily as configured

2010-06-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I recognize it is difficult to confirm bugs relating to update checking,
because (1) they're dependent on updates from a repository you don't
control, (2) the steps often involve waiting for days, and (3) we've
never had a specification for exactly how they should behave. It would
be super-awesome if someone could write a test harness to solve #1 and
#2, with a dummy updates repository that you can configure to advertise
a particular kind of update at a particular time, combined with
temporarily setting your computer's clock forward to test whatever the
next step is. Meanwhile, solving #3 is my responsibility, and I've
started writing a specification
, but it needs a lot of
detail yet.

Paddy, thanks for clarifying your problem. Do you know for sure that
security updates are being auto-installed on your computer? If they are,
then the bugs ceg and Konstantin are seeing are both different from
yours and should be reported separately.

Here's a test case to start off with:

1. Install Ubuntu 10.04.
2. Log in to the new Ubuntu installation for the first time.
3. In "Software Sources" > "Updates", choose "Check for updates: Daily" and
"Install security updates without confirmation".
4. Set the system clock forward one day.
5. Wait for ten minutes.

What should happen: Update Manager opens, displaying only non-security updates.

If that's not what actually happens, please replace the current description
with this, plus a line for what actually happens. Then this report will be
ready for an engineer.

Ist the problem that the default-Login is changed from gnome to kde also

The installation of too many kde packages is "only" a nuisance, while changing

[Bug 467668] Re: [regression-release] Neither compiz nor metacity nor nautilus are run at start

2010-06-06 Thread Doug Morse
@Leo

Yes, correct. My apologies, I misspoke. What I should have wrote is:
What we can be relatively certain of now is that, at a minimum,
something within the $HOME/.config folder is implicated as the source of
the problem, and at a maximum the source does not extend beyond $HOME.

I can say that I don't think that, at least in my case, it's limited to
just .config and .compiz -- not long ago (albeit Karmic, not yet Lucid),
I move .config, .compiz elsewhere, and also remove .cached, .gconfd, and
a few other reasonable candidate cache / session type files/folders from
console session (tty1) and then logged in again via gdm (tty7). No joy,
still the same problems. Again, just FYI, in case it helps.

I expect that, in my and more complicated cases, the solution may simply
be to create a new, empty homedir, reconfigure all GUI components again
manually, and then repopulate homedir with data and carefully repopulate
other dotfiles and dotdirs (i.e., one at a time or in small groups) so
as not to re-introduce the "entanglement". Just not something that I
have time to do right now and I am holding out hope that, once it's
determined what the problem is within .config and/or .compiz, the
information from that discovery might help me hunt down what's going on
in my homedir. Right now, for me, the problem seems to be too much of a
complex and complicated interaction.

[Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-06 Thread databubble
Just so we don't get too many unrelated freezes being tracked in this thread...
the symptoms characterized by florianr were:
- issue was NOT present prior to 10.04
- intermittent system-wide freezes
- frozen image on screen, showing the desktop image without any change and not
taking mouse/keyboard actions
- sometimes MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works, sometimes not.
- system log is still active for some time after the freeze appears to happen
- system logs do not contain any obvious/consistent message that identify the
cause of the freeze
- issue is STILL present testing with upstream kernels (except that you may be
able to continue moving the mouse or a period of time)
- not a memory issue
- system stays connected via wireless (if using wireless)
- issue appears on very different hardware (intel CPU and. AMD,; intel video
and nVidia),
- not related to a specific desktop (gnome and kde) or a specific application
(e.g. virtualbox, firefox, etc.)

>From my own observations:
- a freeze can be provoked by running processes with high CPU (and possibly
disk I/O) such as with handbrake
- I've been able to prompt freezes with no desktop or X server running
although I don't know if florianr can confirm this on his system. As such, I
doubt the problem can be compiz or xorg related (although, note that it may be
processor load related, as as such something like compositing could make a
system more likely to freeze)
- I can eliminate freezes by booting with kernel parameters "noapic nolapic
acpi=off"

florianr, so we can see whether we're still dealing with the same bug or not,
could you please verify:
- your system still responds to pings when "frozen" (and you can't ssh in)
- your system doesn't freeze if you boot with kernel parameters "noapic nolapic
acpi=off"

Others, if your symptoms are different from those above, you may want to
start a new bug report.

this issue started after an upgrade to 10.04 (from 9.10).
Is it clear what the 'screen' is that I see when switching between users is not

2010-06-06 Thread Abhishek
Charlie Kravetz :
In any case, how is it that an update to update-manager is going to resolve the
problem- that's the question?

And the solution mentioned here to get around this bug is pretty similar
to the one we've used to get around on new installs. So I guess this bug
refers to the same problem (whether an upgrade or a new install).

And if I am posting on the wrong bug report, can some one guide me to
the right one. Or should I create a new bug report for the problem I
mentioned in my previous post?

This was an extract job for a rather small archive (just ~ 400 MiB) from
the NAS, to the NAS (I know this is bad practice).

What also came up is that again KDE4 completely freezes, until the lock
is released:

When the lock is released all apps are going back to usual work. I
wouldn't mind if the NFS transfer hangs for some time waiting for the
target to complete some work but it just interferes any interaction with
the machine so this is a real show-stopper.

However, there was a difference how those NFS export got mounted. The
machine that still is fine mounts like this:

rw,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,hard,intr,noatime

...and the machine that just showed this issue again mounts like:

rw,hard,intr,noatime

So I wouldn't expect that setting the sizes changes anything but please
give it a try if you haven't done so before.

[Bug 581843] Re: after upgrade from hardy, evolution does not display addresses

2010-06-06 Thread brian r
The contact edit fields in the Evolution UI don't seem to support the
notion of preferred designations among field sets of the same type and I
suspect that the underlying storage schema doesn't either. However this
is no reason to mess up vcard imports with fields that have them. It
should skip over them gracefully. At the moment it seems to be treating
these as some kind of custom fields and naming them 'pref'.

[Bug 590477] [NEW] Just crashed on me again while reviewing Bug#590474 reports sent

2010-06-06 Thread Keith Myers
Public bug reported:

I just sent bug report #59074 in and was reading through all the *.txt
files included in the report and the system crashed on me again.
ALT+SysRq R E I S U B did not work again and I had to use the computer
reset button to report. This is getting tiresome. Unless someone can
offer some suggestions as to why Ubuntu keeps crashing and how to fix
it, I will abandon this experiment.

Keith
