[Bug 574886] Re: Apt has strange network errors when updating indexes.
I too, have problems with the "something wicked" bug. I cannot now update/upgrade browse or receive email; I upgraded 8.04 to 10.04. As it turns out, a mistake! I have two disappointments--- 1. I believed that LTS would "work out of the box" & was stable 2. Some of the intended help above are a bit brief for a Ubuntu USER, as distinct from a techie. I tied the one about the visudo & sudoers, but with no success. I cannot write to sudoers, but keep getting extra files named .temp or .temp.1 etc. I use a router (#17 above) but even without router problem still exists. Changing the sites for updates from Australi to Main makes no difference. I would appreciate any kind soul writing either a fix or a workaround such that even a relative newcomer such as I am can understand it. (This means telling me when to use SUDO, when to REBOOT, where any fiile is located and so on! Some of us have NOT used GNU/Linux for years!) -- Apt has strange network errors when updating indexes. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574886 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 589520] Re: Haven't been able to execute normal gnome login since 10.04 installation; screen blanks then returns to login screen
Hi, There was no existing xorg.conf file in /etc/X11, so I created one with the following content; Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "off" EndSection After rebooting, I was successfully automatically logged in (which was the option I chose in my third attempt to install). Hi, As squeeze will be released with python2.6, all FTBFS because of python2.6 are RC bugs, so they get fixed quickly. [Bug 476625] Re: Grub2 affected when os-prober incorrectly identifies Windows and Recovery partitions
I had installed one of the later beta releases of Ubuntu 10.04 (latest version available in early April), and my Vista partition was identified correctly. Then, just yesterday, I finally noticed Update Manager trying to get my attention, so I updated. Now, my Vista partition is mis- identified as "Windows Recovery Environment". I do not have a recovery partition on this laptop. My boot priority also got changed (I had it set to boot Windows by default). I like Grub2, but it really should allow me to manually make changes without having to rely on obscure scripts to autodetect things and lock me out of the process. That just isn't the Linux way. [Bug 521492] Re: Dual Monitor wallpaper is not scaling across both monitors, same background is repeated on both monitors instead
Hey guys, Well I also reported this as one of several "MAJOR" bugs in lucid and maverick. All of the wallpaper options simply mirror the image on dual monitors and "span" of course, as mentioned many times here, simply places the image between the two monitors.. This is not the most serious bug in lucid/maverick.. but certainly one of the most annoying of them. This can be remedied under xorg.conf under Section Screen by adding Option "NoTwinViewXineramaInfo" "true" ... However. that only reproduces an old nvidia bug that has since been solved...great for watching full screen dual monitor videos but bad for daily work environment, and of course I don't know if this works with ati or intel video ! As I mentioned,,, this is one of sever major bugs on lucid/maverick... and all of those bugs combined prevent me from reinstalling lucid as a serious work environment and I cannot ask my clients to upgrade to Lucid because of these bugs. This is, along with the other bugs... this one being the most serious https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/581904 , is a big step backwards for ubuntu and most certainly for LTS!!! coz -- Dual Monitor wallpaper is not scaling across both monitors, same background is repeated on both monitors instead https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 598705] [NEW] 'sleep' in lucid makes ethernet fail, even after reboot
Public bug reported: I was originally running 64-bit Kubuntu Lucid, and chose the "sleep" option from the exit menu. The screen went blank and no action involving the keyboard, mouse, or power button would bring the screen alive again. After a hard reset, the computer came up okay except that the computer had no ethernet communication. 'ifconfig' shows the ethernet as having no IP address, as if DHCP was not working. The network manager shows that there are no networks available at all. I tried adding a "New Wired Connection" but nothing changed. I keep a small partition available with Xubuntu as a backup. With this alternate operating system the ethernet works fine, and I used this system to submit this bug, which may lead to misleading information from the 'ubuntu-bug' automatic system. [Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala
@xtKnight I did a clean install (for the >10th time) 10.04 AMD64 First thing I did was to run your script. The following line appeared last: E: main.c: ANDY_FIX: buggy SIMD optimizations disabled. in your script, you tell to hit ctrl+c. so did I, and the same line appeared again. then I set the sound to 5.1 in PA Applet and played a simple sound file and here is the result: E: main.c: ANDY_FIX: buggy SIMD optimizations disabled. E: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write! E: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_emu10k1'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers. E: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail. Also, synaptics reports libpulse-dev as broken. I've included a file with some videos of what's happening. PA.ogv is my config. In the application tab, I first play a mp3 in 5.1 mode and no sound comes out. Then I set the sound to analog strereo and sound is back. pa-systray.ogv is what's happening to the PA icon when in 5.1 mode and trying to preview an audio file. No sound. Another interresting thing is that if I put autospawn=no in pulse/client.conf and start pulseaudio &, i cannot get to the PA applet: the icon stays with three dashes. If I remove the autospawn, pulseaudio restarts by itself and the two right parentesis are back so I can get into pulseaudio applet and fiddle with settings. So bottom line: your patch makes my 5.1 unusable with only stereo left working. should there be anything else I could do, just let me know. ** Attachment added: "pa-config-vids.zip" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50930548/pa-config-vids.zip -- Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445849 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 445416] Re: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea.
The warning doesn't explain why blocklists are a bad idea, or how putting grub in the mbr avoids using blocklists. But installing GRUB2 into the MBR is obviously a bad idea. The fact that in the install program, the only way to avoid it is to click on "Advanced" at some point, is quite scary. If you don't know that you have to do this your MBR will be trashed, as I understand it, without warning. Reasons why putting GRUB2 into the MBR (especially as a default, with no warning, as in the installation program) (1) If you already have another boot loader into the MBR, it will be trashed. (2) If you ever install another OS which works the same way, your GRUB2 will be trashed. (3) Point (1) may be OK if GRUB2 can boot every other OS which now exists or ever will exist. I can't imagine how anyone could believe this, but, specifically, update-grub produces a grub.cfg which has found, but fails to boot, RedHat 9. This might be fixable if GRUB2 had documentation present, but (in Ununtu10.04 it doesn't), so it's not. (By contrast, I can use GRUB as installed by Fedora to chainload to an Ubuntu partition or to boot Ubuntu direct. Even so, I have Fedora's GRUB in it's own partition, because I can't trust that some other OS which I might install in future - such as Ubuntu - will trash it without warning, as would be the case if I had it in the MBR). (4) If you have suffered from (1) and (3), but your other OS was set up right, ie, it has its own bootloader in its own partition, so you want to chainload to that partition, from GRUB2, the documentation telling you how to do it seems to be missing. Certainly "info grub" seems to point to a very incomplete set of documentation, in Ubuntu 10.04. -- grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR.
