[Bug 600916] [NEW] Maverick: No easy way to adjust idle time; default idle time is too short

2010-07-01 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unclutter

I don't mind it's being enabled by default in Maverick, but the idle time of 1
(about 1.5 sec.'s) is way too short and becomes annoying.
The only apparent way is to edit is in etc/default/unclutter, which is
unreasonable.

So the default idle time should be raised and a more accessible means to
configure it provided

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: unclutter 8-13
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-6.9-generic 2.6.35-rc3
Uname: Linux 2.6.35-6-generic i686

[Bug 600915] [NEW] "mcopy" does not translate some filename

2010-07-01 Thread b00n
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mtools

Running on 10.04 freshly updated.

$ apt-cache policy mtools
mtools:
  Installed: 4.0.10-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4.0.10-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4.0.10-1ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expected: "mcopy" would "mangle" Linux filenames as needed so
they would work on fat32.

What happened: error messages, directories not created, ordinary file
not created, "mcopy" crashes.

More details:

The mtools info says it will translate some special characters to
underscores if the target file system does not support them. Copying
from ext4 to fat32, I get error messages from mcopy that look like
untranslated characters:

$ mcopy -b -s -p -m -D a -D A ~/Music/* /media/1B08-461A/MUSIC/
mkdir: Invalid argument
Failure to make directory /media/1B08-461A/MUSIC//Alex de Grassi/Turning:

Indictor, Kahane, Tepp, Zack
Can't open /media/1B08-461A/MUSIC//Crash Test Dummies/God Shuffled His Feet/8 -
How Does a Duck Know?.ogg: Invalid argument

I'm not sure if this is related, but it looks like this might ultimately
lead to a crash:

[Bug 577169] Re: International charachters are not working.

2010-07-01 Thread LocutusOfBorg
@Andreas, the best way is to build amsn with the new libs in a 9.10
machine and find if tk is really responsible for this.

Or maybe Andreas please download tcl/tk from source, just build them
(not install) and run amsn source with ./configure --with-
tcl=/home/yourname/Download/sources/tcl8.5/unix --with-
tk=/home/yourname/Download/sources/tk8.5/unix or something like this

If you get an error when launching amsn (and launch it from bash) go to the
amsn build directory and try wish ./amsn or wish8.5 ./amsn
after this you will build an amsn version with the latest tcl/tk with no
ubuntu-specific patch (maybe a patch breaks the chars)

[Bug 597556] Re: Cannot complete Empathy add account wizard

2010-07-01 Thread Didier Roche
Tried on 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1 on a updated lucid box:
- I can add my gtalk account
- note that even if I get the "Please enter personal details" page, no matter
if I selected the "I don't want to enable this feature for now", the apply
button is grayed when I enter nothing and empathy, in the meawhile is
connecting the account. Consequently, I can just hit "cancel"

[Bug 256767] Re: USB devices work, but constant syslog errors "unable to enumerate USB device on port 5"

2010-07-01 Thread Craig Jennings
Interesting. I don't have NTFS, FAT, or VFAT drives hooked to my box.
Wondering how I can tell what's being referred to being on port <#>. I
had many devices attached to USB ports, so I'll try to isolate the issue
by unplugging and checking the drive to see if I can narrow it down.

[Bug 597688] Re: Unable to print from Firefox or Thunderbird since installing Lucid

2010-07-01 Thread psypher
So it seems that the print job does go to the printer but nothing
happens (other than a short blinking led). Nothing appears in the error
log I printed out. When I set to the OKI C5900(PS) it at least comes up
with an error complaining about paper sizes and I can press OK and it
will print. So while images of "Michael Bolton" from Office Space
beating up the printer with a baseball bat and yelling:"PC Load Letter
what the $...@# does that mean" is running through my head I rather calmly
adjusted the page setting on firefox, thunderbird and Open Office. Now
it all prints. It also prints fine on the original printer driver. So it
seems the only bug is with the driver somehow not talking to the printer
and noting a page setup error.

Strange part is I have never really needed to set page settings in any
of these apps before on previous Ubuntu's

[Bug 108623] Re: totem isn't buffering correctly

2010-07-01 Thread anezch
Amazing! This bug still exists on Lucid and last status is a 'Wont Fix'. The
workaround is awkward and not well documented.
Well, as TBerk wrote on 2009-11-18, I have a feeling that Totem will be
replaced in future. I mean it's unbelievable that this bug's life spans over
several releases. Either fix it or remove the streaming capabilities from it,
so we can decide whether we should keep it or throw it away and use another
player.

[Bug 599626] Re: [arrandale] X freezes after plugging in external monitor and selecting System>Preferences>Monitors

2010-07-01 Thread Bonne Eggleston
I repeated test 1 using xrandr -q --verbose > xrandr.txt however no output was
recorded in the output file.
The ssh session I had open with the machine froze after running the above
command, and no new ssh sessions would connect.

I also repeated test 3 and again no ssh session could be made with the machine.
After leaving it for a while an error came up on the screen:
BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [plymouthd:409]

I have attached the output of xrandr -q --verbose when there is no
external monitor plugged in (i.e. only the laptop screen is being used).

[Bug 562027] Re: [ooo-build] OOo QuickStarter: unable to shutdown / reboot / logout when quickstarter is active

2010-07-01 Thread Valthare
@Chris Coulson
This is not just a quickstarter problem. This is a fundamental design issue of
the behaviour in Gnome.
1. The user requests a shutdown
2. The user is asked by Gnome - Are you sure about that?
3. User explicitly confirms that he is indeed
4. Nothing happens.

The importance is low - I already accepted that. (it is set to high in OO by
now though)
"People have more important issues to work on right now" - this is totally
besides the issue.
This is not a technical problem that would involve lots of coding or testing.
It is a gnome design issue. To fix problems like this - at some point, gnome
developers would have simply to agree on that - in a design meeting. However -
by denying in the first place that this is a design problem at all - this will
NEVER happen. Again - If the user initiates and confirms a shutdown - should
ANY third party application be allowed to silently override that? - Anybody
voting yes here? A simple fix could be to have this dialogue insisting on a
password entry - if that is what we want it to do.

The quick start function is not buried away in the prefs of OO. Anybody
using OO will be familiar with it. Keep in mind that this includes MS
users!! If they try Ubuntu for the first time - have used OO in Windows
- It will be the first thing they enable - even if they never used linux
before in their life. And what a nice welcome they will get upon meeting
a Gnome that simply wont shut down. I fact - one of the main reasons why
I switched to Gnome was a fully working quick-starter. I am sure gnome
developers would have an interest in winning over users from KDE - not
loosing them.

"The session manager is behaving correctly here in not displaying any
dialog" - What? This can only be meant politically - and I disagree 100%
:)

" It would be pretty annoying to have it pop up a dialog telling me
there is a problem with some application, every time i cancel a log out
when i've realised i have work to save" - I am using computers since
1993 - I never ever had to cancel a shutdown because I realised in that
moment there is still some work I need to save. In Windows or Linux.
Besides - you do NOT have the option to cancel the shutdown - which is
exactly what I am talking about here...

[Bug 574155] Re: Software-Center don't remove unactivated ppa's

2010-07-01 Thread David
Old repositories have finally disappeared for me as well, but only once
I removed this package: app-install-data-medibuntu. That package is a
recommended part of adding the Medibuntu repository, according to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Adding%20the%20Repository .
Removing it seems to have made no noticeable difference other than
fixing this bug. I’m not sure if the bug is caused by the package or
merely exposed by it. Nathan, did you remove that package as well?
Anyway, I hope this helps track down the issue.

[Bug 600680] Re: reboots while browsing Zap2it.com in firefox

2010-07-01 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 600680

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 600908] [NEW] Spurious error during authorization

2010-07-01 Thread Aidan Furlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bacula

I recently changed my bacula setup and got the following after running a
job:

01-Jul 22:10 simba-fd JobId 76: Fatal error: Authorization key rejected by
Storage daemon.
Please see http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors for
help.
01-Jul 22:10 simba-fd JobId 76: Fatal error: Failed to authenticate Storage
daemon.

I read the FAQ and checked and re-checked all the passwords in all conf
files and could not find the issue. I then discovered it was not a
password issue at all but a firewall issue - the File Daemon couldn't
send data to the Storage Daemon which was being interpreted as a
authorization key rejection. When I opened port 9103 to the Storage
Daemon, it immediately started working.

[Bug 600906] [NEW] GNOME stable update, at-spi 1.30.1.

2010-07-01 Thread Luke Yelavich
Public bug reported:

It would be good to get at-spi 1.30.1 into lucid. It is a stable GNOME
update, and fixes an important bug relating to collection counts, as
well as updated translations. Filtered debdiff attached. Maverick
already has this package version.

[Bug 600903] [NEW] dpkg, apt-get, and update manager (partial upgrade) lock up when updating initramfs-tools

2010-07-01 Thread ratdude747
Public bug reported:

i was installing updates on my ubuntu 10.10 tower (i686), and it always
locks when updating initramfs-tools. it is creating some boot file (i do
not know off the top of my head, i will post it as soon as i know what
it is) when it locks. i tried apt-get, it made me run dpkg --configure
-a to resume-installation, no surprise, but that locked too. using
update manager, of course, made me do a partial upgrade, but again,
locked at the exact same point.

now i am stuck with a computer that is incapable of installing software
or updates...

[Bug 600902] [NEW] Monitor in dual monitor mode won't wake after sleep

2010-07-01 Thread Aidan Furlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have 2 monitors in dual monitor mode. After they go sleep, the
secondary monitor will wake up on a mouse/keyboard interrupt but the
primary monitor (the one with the launch bar etc) never wakes up and I
have to reboot. This only started happening recently.

I also have the ATI Fire GL proprietary driver installed for my video
card so maybe that is the culprit.

[Bug 600898] [NEW] timeout delay in write loop too long for BD-R[E]

2010-07-01 Thread Stuart R Balfour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvd+rw-tools

dvd+rw-tools-7.1-6, kubuntu 10.04

During the course of tracking down a device buffer underrun/cache coherency
firmware problem affecting apparently only BD-R on Buffalo BRHC-6316U2
(LG GGW-H20N) firmware level XJ03, I discovered that adjusting the
timeout delay in the main write loop at ~line 515 of growisofs_mmc.cpp:

cmd.timeout(dao_toggle?180:60);

to if (_64k)
   cmd.timeout(dao_toggle?30:10); // reduce buffer under-runs
in device cache
else cmd.timeout(dao_toggle?180:60);

substantially reduced the extent of the buffer underruns/cache failures.
While it did not solve the problem, I think for blu-ray media, which spin
3.2 times faster base rate (1X), the delay between writes might be just too
long. I don't know what happens if we wait too little. But the host can be
suspended on signal; the media burn cannot (at least not always -
buffer underrun protection and zero-loss linking features are not yet
universal).

[Bug 600896] [NEW] erroneous reassignment to variable (keypunch?)

2010-07-01 Thread Stuart R Balfour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvd+rw-tools

dvd+rw-tools-7.1-6, kubuntu 10.04.

The following code in poor_man_rewritable() in growisofs_mmc.cpp
contains a coding error:

else if (profile==0x1A ||   // DVD+RW
 profile==0x2A ||   // DVD+RW Double Layer
 (profile&=0xF0)==0x40)  // BD-R[E]
{   fprintf (stderr,"%s: flushing cache\n",ioctl_device);
if (flush_cache(cmd))   exit (errno);

an embedded assignment. Even if it is not causing an existing bug,
this is the kind of thing someone in the future will trip over.

[Bug 405898] Re: [karmic] Orca skips Ubiquity panel content

2010-07-01 Thread Luke Yelavich
I don't think this is an issue with Ubuiquity. We need to script Orca to
recognise the elemts that make up the different page tabs, extract the
text, and read it. As I said above, I think something changed in the UI,
but am not 100% sure, and need to use accerciser to take a closer look.

2010-07-01 Thread Luke Yelavich
I can confirm this, even after updating the ubiquity script to orca's
new script API. Need to test in maverick to be sure, but it doesn't work
in lucid. I think this may have something to do with Ubiquity's UI,
although I cannot be sure just yet. I need to dig around with accerciser
to see what the script is missing/needs to do now that things are
somewhat different.

I can verify that installing libatk1.0-dev and gobject-introspection-
repository into a karmic system, and upgrading libatk1.0-dev to the
package version found in lucid, that package installation fails. I can
also verify that once lucid-proposed was added to sources.list, the
upgrade to the package version in lucid-proposed succeeds, with
libatk1.0-dev successfully replacing gobject-introspection-repository.

[Bug 547244] Re: package libatk1.0-dev 1.29.92-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/gir-1.0/Atk-1.0.gir', which is also in package gobject-introspection-repository 0:0.

2010-07-01 Thread Luke Yelavich
** Description changed:

Updating libatk1.0-dev in karmic to the version of libatk1.0-dev in
lucid causes an error, due to libatk1.0-dev in lucid containing the same
file as the gobject-introspection-repository package from karmic.
libatk1.0-dev contains the file in question due to the deprecation of
  the gobject-introspection-repository package.

Whilst most users do not have libatk1.0-dev installed, there is a good
chance that developers updating from karmic will hit this packaging
error. Whilst slightly outside the standard upgrade use case, the
libatk1.0-dev package in its current form will break the release upgrade
  process.

There is no chance of regression potential, as the updated libatk1.0-dev
  package replaces gobject-introspection-repository, thereby taking
ownership of the file file that causes the conflict error.

  Test case:
This bug, and the proposed fix, are best tested in a karmic chroot, with all
karmic updates applied. The tester will also require libatk1.0-0 and
libatk1.0-dev packages for both lucid, and lucid-proposed, either by
downloading the .deb files directly, or adding lucid-proposed as a package
source in sources.list. If a karmic chroot is not available, an up to date
karmic install should be sufficient for testing. If you wish to update your
system completely from akrmic to lucid, skip step 2 below, and perform the
instructions in step 3, ensuring you also have lucid-proposed in sources.list.
The chroot method is preferred however, as it prevents the installation of
other packages from lucid-proposed, which may interfear with testing the fix
for this bug.

- 1. Enter the karmic chroot, and install libatk1.0-dev from the karmic repos.
+ 1. Enter the karmic chroot, and install libatk1.0-dev and
gobject-introspection-repository from the karmic repos.
  2. Either from .deb files, or by adding lucid in sources.list, install
libatk1.0-0 and libatk1.0-dev packages. Notice the package error, due to two
packages claiming to own /usr/share/gir-1.0/Atk-1.0.gir.
  3. Again either from .deb files, or by adding lucid-proposed to sources.list,
install libatk1.0-0 and libatk1.0-dev packages, making sure they are version
1.30.0-0ubuntu2.1. These packages should now install successfully.

NOTE: This bug is not present when upgrading from lucid to maverick, so
no fix is required in maverick.

Yes this is still an issue. I get the same problem with a Rebel XTi. Worked
