[Bug 462182] Re: [needs-packaging] Please upgrade to openmotif 2.3.xx

2010-09-27 Thread Alex Cockell
Looks like it's just made Debian Testing.
http://packages.qa.debian.org/o/openmotif/news/20100926T163917Z.html

Any chance it could be evaluated for SRU into Lucid? Maybe along with
talking to Citrix about getting their ICA client into the repos... or an
installer stub into Universe/Multiverse as a stopgap?

So we end-users have a one-step action?

[Bug 635223] Re: Wine applications not listed in Unity Applications Place

2010-09-27 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
You're right Adam. You got me there. I have actually never noticed that
particular paragraph in the spec before :-) Thanks for digging into
this!

It is, however, a pretty nasty part of the spec since it requires
excessive stat()ing of files. Consider:

  /home/kamstrup/.local/share/applications/wine-Programs-Songbird-
Songbird (Profile Manager).desktop

This maps down to 2^3=8 possible paths the .desktop file could live
under (all permutations of - and /) since '-' is also a legal character
in a desktop file id (consider gnome-power-preferences.desktop).

To make matters slightly ridiculous: If I had a file
/usr/share/applications/gnome/power/preferences.desktop, and that file
was included from an element at any later point in the .menu
file than gnome-power-preferences.desktop; then the spec tells us that
this file (preferences.desktop) takes precedence over gnome-power-
preferences.desktop. Go figure :-)

Nonetheless we need to look into this for Natty. If we can make it work
with Wine programs across the stack we could consider an SRU for
Maverick, but to be honest I fear that these changes have non-trivial
ramifications.

Re: [Bug 563156] Re: [ATI Graphics][Lucid] laptop runs hot, shorter battery life, fan always on

2010-09-27 Thread Chen Chen
Maybe your video card has been deprecated by ATI-AMD, i got that it has
stopped supporting for some old cards, which is blamed by many people.
You can go downgrade or compile an older kernel yourself.
(Go ati.amd.com to see which is the oldest version of fglrx still
supported and compile a corresponding kernel.)

PS. my card is ATI Radeon HD4570

[Bug 649581] [NEW] [MIR] ubuntu-font-family-sources

2010-09-27 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

The package is architecture-independent and contains four .ttf TrueType
fonts, covering ~2,000 glyph codepoints in Latin, Cyrillic, Greek across
Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic.

There is a great demand for access to the Ubuntu Font Family; 500 non-
Ubuntu members have signed up to the 'ubuntu-typeface-interest' team
specifically to gain access during the phased beta period. The fonts in
the package have no history of security problems; although .ttf files
do contain manually programmed bytecodes for the font hinting state-
machine. The package does not require any user-configuration after
installation as FontConfig locates and indexes the fonts automatically.
Canonical are actively funding the upstream provider so support issues
are likely to be highly resolvable:

  http://font.ubuntu.com/

The primary bug tracking the potential inclusion into Ubuntu 10.10 is
bug #629622. A list of targetted bugs is at:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-font-family/+milestone/0.70

most of which have been closed by the process of preparing this
uploaded, and which in-turn was blocked on (lack of) licensing issues.
Bug #645987 covers the possible inclusion of the new INDIAN RUPEE symbol
(assigned by Unicode in the last month), and if this were to happen, it
would require a further upload, with very low technical risks as that
codepoint has never been allocated before and is therefore unlikely to
collide with anything.

[Bug 648576] Re: quadrapassel freezes unpredictably during play

2010-09-27 Thread Julian Brelsford
quadrapassel is causing my machine to show unusual memory-usage
statistics (according to "top"and "system monitor"):

when it crashes, quadrapassel has a memory usage of about 36mb according
to top. top and system monitor show the total memory used by the system
at about 100% of 1GB physical memory available (plus a small amount of
swap used).

Closing quadrapassel causes the system to have a lot of free memory: it
goes down to only 34% of the 1GB of memory used, with the rest free.

[Bug 394413] Re: nfs client hangs

2010-09-27 Thread Harald
This is still an issue.

As of my experience, I can receive files from NFS with no problems. As
soon as I SEND files to the NFS Server, the Ubuntu client hangs--
partially. What I mean by Hang is:

- NFS File Transfer continues, at normal speed.
- GUI is 80% inoperable: No further programs are allowed to be launched and the
open programs tend to "freeze". Panel apps keep running surprisingly. System
Monitor stops scrolling cpu/mem/net info.
- If I stop the NFS Transfer, normal behavior is recovered. All Applications
resume functionality.

[Bug 649574] [NEW] dovecot-postfix incomplete install

2010-09-27 Thread Yan Grunenberger
Public bug reported:

On a fresh maverick, dovecot-postfix does not configure entirely dovecot out of
the box.
One need to modify /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to include reading external
configuration files located in /etc/dovecot/auth.d and /etc/dovecot/conf.f. We
should expect a fully configured dovecot after installing the package.

Suggested solutions :
- add at the end of the dovecot.conf : !include /etc/dovecot/conf.d/*.conf
- add at the end of the auth section in dovecot.conf : include_try
/etc/dovecot/auth.d/*.auth

[Bug 546871] Re: ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync

2010-09-27 Thread Andrew Cowie
Just to clarify - since I upgraded the drivers, I have found that the
google bookmark sync doesn't cause the hang (which can be positively
identified by caps lock light not showing) - this is a great improvement
over the situation when this bug report was opened.

However I am suspicious that heavy network usage (e.g. bittorrent) is
still causing these hangs say once every 24-48 hours. I've upgraded my
drivers - here's the output of sudo lshw -C network

  *-network
   description: Wireless interface
   product: AR5212 802.11abg NIC
   vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
   physical id: 0
   bus info: p...@:03:00.0

   version: 01
   serial: 00:16:cf:5c:30:f7
   width: 64 bits
   clock: 33MHz

So I will continue with this config and let you know if I see another
crash.

[Bug 630632] Re: [i945GME] Kwin compositing fail on maverick

2010-09-27 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Based on your previous comment, I'd guess that this is now fixed in
Maverick.

The lack of mouse input is going to be a separate issue. If the windows
are being repainted - and given that you can resize them, it seems that
they are - then mesa's job is finished :).

Please feel free to file another bug about the mouse input issue -
particularly if you can find a way to make it happen regularly.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2010-09-27 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
I think the right approach is to stick with Zeitgeist and then figure
out ways to access/discover contents that you don't have in your
Zeitgeist log.

For Natty I see two things we can do to improve the situation:

 a) Ship more dataproviders for Zeitgeist. In other words: Make sure
apps either update .recently-used.xbel or that they log stuff directly
in ZG.

 b) Integrate other means of discovery. For example:
b1) Listing music files via the MPRIS2 API
b2) Integrating removable devices (USB sticks) directly in the places (they
just show up in the launcher now)
   b3) U1 integration
   bN) ...

If we combine these things I think we can have a very light and flexible
system which we can tailor just to our liking.

[Bug 649573] [NEW] Underquoted definition in m4 file

2010-09-27 Thread Adrian Petrescu
Public bug reported:

Line 225 of /usr/share/aclocal/gtkglextmm-1.2.m4 reads:

AC_DEFUN(AC_GTKGLEXTMM_SUPPORTS_MULTIHEAD,

which, when running autoconf from anywhere on the system, leads to
warnings of the form:

/usr/share/aclocal/gtkglextmm-1.2.m4:225: warning: underquoted definition of
AC_GTKGLEXTMM_SUPPORTS_MULTIHEAD
/usr/share/aclocal/gtkglextmm-1.2.m4:225: run info '(automake)Extending aclocal'
/usr/share/aclocal/gtkglextmm-1.2.m4:225: or see
http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Extending-aclocal

While not really critical, it is annoying to see this on completely
unrelated builds anywhere on the system, and it can even cause some
environments like CDT on Eclipse to mark the project as having build
errors. The fix is extremely simple, just replace line 255 with

AC_DEFUN([AC_GTKGLEXTMM_SUPPORTS_MULTIHEAD],

and all is well. Hopefully this can be included in Maverick before
release, it would be nice to see this finally cleared up.

Running Ubuntu with this motherboard means you cannot access your PATA /

[Bug 649566] Re: No tethering after update on 2010-09-27

2010-09-27 Thread quequotion
** Description changed:

Since the last update I can no longer use native iPhone tethering.

The ethernet interface ("eth3" for me) that ipheth usually creates is
  not present.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect the iPhone USB charge/sync cable to the pc and the iPhone

  2. kernel recognizes the phone as an ipheth device:
  Sep 28 14:11:19 ProliantMK2 kernel: [ 6167.350154] usb 1-7: new high speed
USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11
  Sep 28 14:11:19 ProliantMK2 kernel: [ 6167.534090] ipheth 1-7:4.2: Apple
iPhone USB Ethernet device attached

  3. network-manager tries to do something:
  Sep 28 14:11:20 ProliantMK2 NetworkManager[1096]:SCPlugin-Ifupdown:
devices added (path:
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.1/usb1/1-7/1-7:4.2/net/wwan0, iface: wwan0)
  Sep 28 14:11:20 ProliantMK2 NetworkManager[1096]:SCPlugin-Ifupdown:
device added (path:
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.1/usb1/1-7/1-7:4.2/net/wwan0, iface: wwan0):
no ifupdown configuration found.

  4. The wwan0 interface never comes up, the blue "Tethering" status bar
never appears on the iphone, no tethering takes place.

It looks to me like it's trying to configure the iPhone as a "Mobile
Broadband" (Wireless Wide Area Network) connection instead of a "Wired"
  (Ethernet) connection.

This is actually a more accurate interpretation of the iPhone's
tethering as an internet connection, but something is missing and
Network Manager can't autoconfigure the interface.

SSH-Tunnel tethering and USB access (filesystem, pictures, music etc.)
are working, which tells me usbmuxd is probably fine.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-09-27 Thread Usama Akkad
There is a new ALPHA (testing) workaround for this bug using MLterm API,

To test get the latest build of MLterm from sf.net, here are some
instructions:

you will need this packages build-essential, mercurial (to pull source
code), libvte-dev and libfribidi-dev

Start by getting the latest build:
$ hg clone  http://mlterm.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/mlterm/mlterm

Then building:
$ cd mlterm
$./configure --with-type-engines=xcore,xft --enable-fribidi
$make
$cd gtk/
$make

ATTENTION: don't forget to backup libvte.so.9 (you might use locate to
find it) before continue.

Using the library from our build and linking,

$ cp mlterm/gtk/.libs/libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]
$ ln -sf libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]/libvte.so.9

http://mlterm.sf.net/gnome-terminal.JPG

Known issues:
* Gnome-terminal dose not start with compiz enabled
* Synaptic crashes when it should display terminal output

Please test ,report and help patching if possible. MLterm mail-list is:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mlterm-dev-en

[Bug 649566] Re: No tethering after update on 2010-09-27

2010-09-27 Thread quequotion
wwan0 is not mentioned by ifconfig.

"sudo ifup wwan0" returns "Ignoring unknown interface wwan0=wwan0"

I tried configuring a "Mobile Broadband" connection through network
manager (using settings appropriate for my carrier) but it's just made a
connection profile for an adapter that doesn't exist so nothing
happens...

This is not a bug - EWMH requires that tooltip windows are marked
sticky iirc [1]

[Bug 649566] [NEW] No tethering after update on 2010-09-27

2010-09-27 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

Since the last update I can no longer use native iPhone tethering.

The ethernet interface ("eth3" for me) that ipheth usually creates is
not present.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Connect the iPhone USB charge/sync cable to the pc and the iPhone

2. kernel recognizes the phone as an ipheth device:
Sep 28 14:11:19 ProliantMK2 kernel: [ 6167.350154] usb 1-7: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 11
Sep 28 14:11:19 ProliantMK2 kernel: [ 6167.534090] ipheth 1-7:4.2: Apple iPhone
USB Ethernet device attached

3. network-manager tries to do something:
Sep 28 14:11:20 ProliantMK2 NetworkManager[1096]:SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices
added (path: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.1/usb1/1-7/1-7:4.2/net/wwan0,
iface: wwan0)
Sep 28 14:11:20 ProliantMK2 NetworkManager[1096]:SCPlugin-Ifupdown: device
added (path: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.1/usb1/1-7/1-7:4.2/net/wwan0,
iface: wwan0): no ifupdown configuration found.

SSH-Tunnel tethering and USB access (filesystem, pictures, music etc.)
are working, which tells me usbmuxd is probably fine.

ipheth 1.0+git20100924-1ubuntu1~ppa3
usbmuxd 1.0.4-1ubuntu1~ppa1
network-manager 0.8.1+git.20100810t184654.ab580f4-0ubuntu3~nmt3~lucid

mplayer-gui has been removed in maverick because it is broken
upstream. It doesn't even build with a shared avcodec ATM.

[Bug 649562] [NEW] Help icon produces garbage-unicode name popup in 10.10 beta UNR

2010-09-27 Thread John Gilmore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When moving the mouse down the left margin in 10.10 beta UNR (running
from LiveCD on SD card), when I come to the blue circle containing a
question mark, it pops up a tooltip that says:

[four Unicode characters in boxes that indicate we don't have the
right font installed].

Looks like 010403, 010403, 010404, 010430 or something like that - it's
pretty tiny.

I had just booted up the UNR SD card, haven't changed any settings, it's
all in English so far, except for this. It doesn't even know my
timezone yet.

[Bug 649560] [NEW] Too hard to find control panel / settings / "System" in 10.10 UNR Beta

2010-09-27 Thread John Gilmore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

It's too hard to find out how to do something simple like change a
setting. The settings are apparently buried under a grey square that
rolls off the bottom of the screen during normal operation. To get to
it, you seem to have to hover at the bottom left of the screen until the
left margin scrolls up, then eventually a grey square comes along that
doesn't look at all like settings (it's for Applications), then you have
to go into the far right corner of the screen and hit System, then you
can see your system control panel settings. Way too cumbersome and
counterintuitive!

[Bug 649553] [NEW] system hangs, bounces, oom-killer invoked on UNR live SD card

2010-09-27 Thread John Gilmore
Public bug reported:

I put Maverick Beta UNR on an SD card, ran it in my Aspire One D250
laptop without installing. Was just trying it out, running mahjongg,
running rhythmbox (with no music), trying to find the control panel
(hiding in greyed-out stuff that scrolled off the left margin), etc, but
it kept hanging for seconds and then bouncing the few windows around. I
was not connected to Internet; not running a web browser. Nothing huge
should be running. I started a terminal and dmesg showed that I had
been hit by the oom-killer three times! Mutter killed rhythmbox, then
killed ssh-agent, then killed gnome-session.

Clearly the system should boot up and do simple stuff from the LiveCD
without crashing for lack of memory on a 1GB laptop!

I tried to submit this from the laptop itself using ubuntu-bug -p linux (as
suggested in the page where I'm typing this), and it let
me type everything in, and then when I submitted the bug, it said "Timeout
error: Sorry, something just went wrong in Launchpad." and threw away
everything I'd typed. So this is all the bug report you're gonna get. Dmesg
really did show three oom-kills, I promise you, and I submitted it, but your
recommended procedure for submitting did not work.

[Bug 408165] Re: Linksys By Cisco WUSB600N v2 Doesn't Work

2010-09-27 Thread Sean McNamara
I'm terribly sorry for the mix-up!

http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/git-commits-head/2010/4/30/32383

Read that message.

You'll want to rename (once again) usb_buffer_alloc_coherent to
usb_alloc_coherent. So, to summarize:

1. The original sources say "usb_buffer_alloc", which was dropped in 2.6.35.
2. You renamed it incorrectly to "usb_buffer_coherent", which does not exist.
3. I incorrectly advised you to rename it to "usb_buffer_alloc_coherent", which
is also wrong, based on my bad memory.
4. You NEED to rename it, finally, to usb_alloc_coherent.

Finally, any instances of "usb_buffer_free" (or usb_alloc_free) need to
be renamed to "usb_free_coherent".

[Bug 434436] Re: pulseaudio: sudden crashes while watching video clips or listening to songs

2010-09-27 Thread Mike McKee
I was running Skype, which uses pulseaudio, but wasn't using the audio
functionality. Also, I was using Virtualbox. The problem is that my
XServer crashed while I was typing in Skype. When I checked the logs, I
saw these last entries:

Sep 28 00:54:59 laptop kernel: [100317.622233] VirtualBox[8370]: segfault at 3
ip 0b230190 sp b5e5fe1c error 4
Sep 28 00:55:10 laptop pulseaudio[10371]: pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
Sep 28 00:55:12 laptop bonobo-activation-server (mike100-10370): could not
associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket
/tmp/dbus-tGc6qlSHIx: Connection refused
Sep 28 00:55:12 laptop pulseaudio[10371]: main.c: Unable to contact D-Bus:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoServer: Failed to connect to socket
/tmp/dbus-tGc6qlSHIx: Connection refused

So, evidently a running, idle Virtualbox can randomly cause your XServer
to crash via a socket down with pulseaudio. I'm running Ubuntu Desktop
10.04.1 LTS.

[Bug 408165] Re: Linksys By Cisco WUSB600N v2 Doesn't Work

2010-09-27 Thread emory
Their clean target in the Makefile doesn't seem to clean up the object
files in os/linux but even after cleaning that up and substituting
usb_buffer_coherent for usb_buffer_alloc_coherent I still get errors.

Last error:

2010_0915_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.2/os/linux/../../common/cmm_mac_usb.c:34:
note: expected ‘VOID **’ but argument is of type ‘UCHAR **’

I already had done the previous recommendation of moving them from
usb_buffer_alloc to usb_buffer_coherent. They are now set to
usb_buffer_alloc_coherent.

Has anyone built this driver successfully against 2.6.35-22-generic on
Maverick using the v2.4.0.2 tarball that the vendor now has available
(the one previous users were having success with isn't available from
the vendor anymore)

[Bug 649543] [NEW] "work week" preferences do nothing - no effect

2010-09-27 Thread Conrad Firm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In the Calendar section, I select "Work Week" view - it gives me a 5-day
Monday-Friday view with 9am-5pm workday - the defaul, basically...

I go into Edit->Preferences (Calendar and Tasks/General) and in the
"Work Week" section makes changes to these settings (specifically
include the weekend and change workday to 10am-7pm and exclude
Wednesday) - and click "Close"

nothing changes - the "Work Week" view remains the same

the "Day" view also still has the Default 9-5 setting instead of the
10-7 I had changed to...

the "Week" view has Wednesday greyed, so it looks like maybe that has
actually picked up my changes?

the "Month" view shows a whole lot of grey - although every Wednesday is
a slightly darker grey so...? dunno...

this is Evolution 2.30.3 installed from the repos as part of a Maverick
install - stock standard, nothing plugged in

[Bug 603833] Re: default folder handler is improperly set from 'open with other application' menu

2010-09-27 Thread Doug McMahon
The culprit here is the 'Remember this application for "folder"' file'
checkbox.

By default it is checked, that 's what's causing apps to be set as the default
folder handler.
Unchecking it doesn't prevent the app from being added to the 'Open With' menu

It would seem the option should be removed or at the very least the
option (check box) not enabled by default

It would be nice if this could be taken care of.
