[Bug 290578] Re: Print PDF Fails

2010-10-19 Thread madbiologist
Don - given that this bug has not had an effective update since November
2008, and given that your symptoms are different, you almost certainly
have a different bug. Therefore you should report a new bug.

However first please test with Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat". If you
don't want to install it you can test using the Live CD. I can print
the file attached to comment #11 without problems with Ubuntu 10.10 on
my Canon i965 (using the BJC 8200 Foomatic driver). Evince version is
2.32.0-0ubuntu1

Yet, we must sit here and "wish" that it would be fixed in Metacity for Ubuntu,
and evidently it's more important that a theme look good than be usable. It
needs to do both.

[Bug 621507] Re: glib-compile-schemas fails if override files refer to non-installed schemas

2010-10-19 Thread Robert Ancell
On further investigation, the bug appears to be in natty, not maverick.
The changes were not present in 2.27.0 so this bug is occurring again.
However the changes are in git master so it will be fixed again in
2.27.1.

[Bug 467169] Re: keyboard shortcuts UI issues; fails to set shortcut

2010-10-19 Thread Ian! D. Allen
These bugs still exist in Maverick.

10.10 Maverick: Open: System | Preferences | Keyboard Shortcuts.

Verfify that "Toggle maximization state | ALT+F10" works on a window.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F10 still toggles maximization.

At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+F10, but the shortcut
still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing.

Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10 and verify that it works.
Note that ALT-F10 now does nothing, as expected.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+MOD4+F10 still toggles maximization.

At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+MOD4+F10, but the shortcut
still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing.

Map "Toggle screen reader" to ALT+MOD4+F10.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10.
Now, ALT+MOD4+F10 does nothing, and no amount of playing around will
get it to do anything. I cannot assign ALT+MOD4+F10 to anything else.

It seems that any shortcut that you assign to "Toggle screen reader"
gets killed and made useless for anything else.

If you try to assign ALT+F11 or ALT+SHIFT+F11 to two functions, it will
correctly complain and tell you in the reassignment that one will be
disabled. But you can assign ALT+MOD4+F10 or ALT+MOD4+F11 to multiple
functions and it won't complain at all.  One of the functions might work;
the others will be ignored.

Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+F12 and verify it toggles.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F12 still toggles maximization.
Map "Toggle shaded state" to ALT+F12.
BUG: ALT+F12 still toggles maximization, even though the UI says it
should toggle shaded state.
Map "Toggle maximization state" to anything other than ALT+F12.
Now ALT+F12 correctly toggles shaded state.

This is a mess.

[Bug 663119] Re: Unneeded items in System > Preferences

2010-10-19 Thread Vish
The settings and preferences is being given a makeover as part of GNOME 3, for
its new control center :
http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings

A library is available for developers wishing to implement new Settings
Panels. If anyone is an app maintainer, they should look into porting
the setting to the new panel api.

This is a major task and not a simple change, Hence marking as Invalid for
papercuts.
I dont expect any changes from an Ubuntu desktop discussion either. Some of the
items are there on purpose and intended, eg: Broadcast [Gwibber] preferences

> Ok, thank you for explaining that. It's a very unexpected way of

People think of it as a configuration file, but it is rather a script. I
think that could be the "gotcha".

> I wonder why doesn't the pulseaudio documentation say anything at all
about it. Could you pass this upstream to ask that a few words of
explanation be added in the pa docs?

Ok, but could you then explain where you would look, and what the text
would look like to give you that information? It would be good for me to
know where users are looking for information.

> Meanwhile, in my good faith attempt to answer the request for more
information in this report, it somehow broke my package system as
described in my previous two comments.

Hmm, I'm not an expert in that area, but I think running "sudo apt-get"
with the --fix-broken flag, e g "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-broken"
might help. Or it might tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.

[Bug 396015] Re: Invalid range for meters

2010-10-19 Thread Adam Weiss
I would venture the argument that a logarithmic scale would be the best
way to approach this. The autoadjusting linear scale looks pretty, but
does little to convey useful information as to actual utilization or
throughput and is such just plain confusing. I think most users are
probably interested in getting an idea as to the throughput of the
network or disk. Setting maximums specific to machine could make a
pretty graph, but it also involves hidden differences in scale from
machine to machine.

Plus, it would be dead easy to implement.

[Bug 647270] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-10-19 Thread Agronskey Hooper
OK, I'm now on 10.10 and this issue appears to have been resolved
ultimately.

I believe the issue is that my graphics card probably never should have
existed in our plane of reality.

Even under Windows driver support for it was nigh nonexistent, so I
suppose I should not have been so surprised by its absence in Linux as
well.

ASUS AH3650 SILENT/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP
4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card

When this card came out pretty much everyone in their right mind had
switched to motherboards with PCI Express slots. All of ATi/AMDs
drivers for this range of chipsets presume a PCI Express installation.
But someone at either ASUS or SAPPHIRE, possibly both as they each offer
a version of this graphics card, came up with the brilliant idea of
offering this as an AGP card for those such as myself who had aging
hardware that just needed a good graphical kick in the pants.

I was happy to grab it as a replacement for my old AIW Radeon 8500DV.
But alas, it was never quite what I expected. So I've ordered new
hardware and will be putting together a new system within the next week
as my primary Ubuntu workstation. Once that's done this system will be
relegated to file serving duty using FreeNAS or something instead.

Ultimately fglrx doesn't like this graphics card and neither does
anything else. It is truly a forgotten bastard child.

2010-10-19 Thread Murz
Didn't see #537640 as duplicate, thouse bug is for Lucid and about ati driver -
no radeonhd, and in comment #98 I see:
With kernel 2.6.32-24 i have still this problem on an IBM T60 with ATI
Technologies Inc M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300]
Not only the secondary display but both displays are flickering

Why xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd is missing in Maverick? If it compiled
from sources and work normally, much useful for people is to install it
from core or from any ppa.

[Bug 460483] Re: The plugin should allow Evolution to close to the indicator-applet

2010-10-19 Thread Julien Olivier
Hi Geoff,

I've just tested it and it works great, apart from one thing: if I
uncheck "show evolution on startup", the window is still visible the
first time it is launched.

Another thing: is it normal that, although the window is visible, it
doesn't appear in the window list?

[Bug 493503] Re: Newer versions available, v2.0.1 is over 2yrs old with a number of fixes/enhancements

2010-10-19 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi John,

We're in the process of upgrading cheetah to 2.4.3 right now. You can
track the progress in bug #663343. In fact the newer upstream was
already uploaded into natty, though a number of fixes are needed to make
it behave properly given the addition of python 2.7.

Marking as Fix Released, since 2.4.3 is in natty.

2010-10-19 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Christian, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help
us make Ubuntu better.

We are in the process of upgrading to the 2.4.3 upstream release right
now (and hopefully at the same time merging debian's latest changes).

You can track that progress in bug #663343 . I imagine once it is done,
this bug can be marked fix released, and 2.4.3 can be backported to at
least Lucid.

Can you check if you have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed?
If you have, can you try to remove that package and start the upgrade again?

Ah, sorry, I didn't see that bug because apparently a search for 7.3

If it had been newest first I would have seen it immediately.

[Bug 609716] Re: Ubuntu stops responding

2010-10-19 Thread Agronskey Hooper
I am experiencing a similar issue with Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my
system. It seems to be rather random, but happens due to clicking
things with the mouse - whether icons, on-screen buttons or menu
options. It also happens when dragging or resizing windows or clicking
their scrollbars. The system will just hang, frozen, indefinitely. I
found out accidentally that by tapping the power button on my system a
shutdown menu appears and the mouse is magically available again.

A minor caveat... Now this is an extremely cheap, rather basic optical
mouse that I got somewhere for around 10 bucks. I have suspected for a
couple of weeks that the left mouse button may be going bad. Sometimes
using the button would achieve nothing at all, while in some programs
what was intended as a single click was interpreted as a double click
instead. So I'm going to replace the mouse and hope that solves the
issue.

I hope this helps!

[Bug 596327] Re: Digikam imports images taken with Nikon Cameras extremely slow, takes a large amount of time processing exif data

2010-10-19 Thread Joshua McFadden
OK, given the upstream bug report (http://dev.exiv2.org/issues/show/677)
I:

1) created a patch of Andreas Huggel's fix that went into exiv2 0.20
(svn diff -r2016-2020, the revisions were consecutive).

2) applied it to an exiv2-0.19 source deb, and recompiled that deb and
kdegraphics (provides libkexiv2).

3) installed digikam from apt (i'm on amd64).

This fixes the performance problem for me. Here's the exiv2 patch. I
will ping Andreas and ask whether he can sanity-check this. I would be
extremely grateful if we could get this patch into Maverick!

** Patch added: "Backport of 0.20 Nikon performance fix to 0.19. Tested on
amd64."

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2010-10-19 Thread ricardisimo
I don't have the fortitude necessary to read all 205 comments before
mine, but the problem is not just with launcher icons on the top panel,
in case that was not yet brought up by someone else. I constantly have
to reorder the icons on the right-hand side of the lower panel. It is
annoying, to say the least.

Please try the following:

 1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
 2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
 3. Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
 4. At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
 5. Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

Does the problem still happen?

[Bug 22070] Re: Logitech Quickcam Messenger is not usable

OK so I had to trim /var/kern/log a bit...because it ballooned up to

pretty much repeating itself after that point.

Also there was absolutely no video this time (and no audio, but I know

[Bug 578078] Re: regular system freezes with KMS on rc410 ati video chip

2010-10-19 Thread PatrickDickey
I can confirm this on an upgrade of Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 (it was
originally a Kubuntu 10.04 installation, but I added the Ubuntu Desktop
also). As far as I know, KMS is still running (as I'm not sure how to
disable it), and I have essentially the same dmesg output as the
submitter.

My lspci reveals

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon
Xpress 200M]

for my Video Card.

Also, I keep getting this error in my dmesg (and the Display settings
fail to recognize my Acer P241W monitor):

[Bug 663672] [NEW] won't mount NFS mounts with space in the name

2010-10-19 Thread Tim White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs5

Using the auto.net file to mount NFS mounts on the local network.
One of the machines (a NAS) has a number of similarly named exports with spaces
in the name. autonfs appears to only see the name upto the first space.
The awk script in /etc/auto.net that parses the output of showmount doesn't
consider that there may be spaces in the export name.

For example, the Network Recycle Bin's
$ showmount -e korby
Export list for korby:
/Qweb
/Qusb
/Qrecordings
/Qmultimedia
/Qdownload
/Public
/Photos
/Network Recycle Bin 4
/Network Recycle Bin 3
/Network Recycle Bin 1
/Media
/Documents
/DVD_rip

Turns into

$ /etc/auto.net korby
-fstype=nfs,hard,intr,nodev,nosuid \
/DVD_rip korby:/DVD_rip \
/Documents korby:/Documents \
/Media korby:/Media \
/Network korby:/Network \

/Qdownload korby:/Qdownload \
/Qmultimedia korby:/Qmultimedia \
/Qrecordings korby:/Qrecordings \
/Qusb korby:/Qusb \
/Qweb korby:/Qweb

This prevents autofs from mounting any of the korby shares as it finds a
duplicate mount (let alone, the mount it thinks it's a duplicate of is
invalid as well).

[Bug 663673] [NEW] Vim 7.3 packages not released

2010-10-19 Thread Chris Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim

Currently Vim in Ubuntu 10.10 is at 7.2.  It should be updated to 7.3;
there are a few nice new features in it, and it includes all the bug
fixes from the 7.2 line which haven't been released in Ubuntu as well.

(I can't find any way that requests for package updates should be done;
if there is some procedure for it, please mention that and I'll do it
that way in future.)

There is already a PPA with Vim 7.3 available for Maverick; I don't know
if that helps or not - but it does provide an alternative anyway.
https://launchpad.net/~passy/+archive/vim?field.series_filter=maverick .
Currently I'm using an installation from Lucid which I still have, even
though it's not a Maverick package -
https://launchpad.net/~ajc30/+archive/ppa/vim

"IMAP" server type worked with Lucid.

[Bug 350329] Re: gnome-session-properties dialog is far too small

2010-10-19 Thread poloshiao
We find out Bug#350329 just before we plan to post this bug report which
described almost the same situation as we met, so we post it here as an
reinforcing report. What we want to emphasize is that the status under
Chinese circumstance, maybe the same as Asian characters, is worse than
under English environment.

subject: to keep the windows of gnome-session-properties opened with an
optimal width when first clicked.

This bug report was posted originally by xenomorph0525 on 2010/10/16 23:00:22.
Its url is : http://www.ubuntu-tw.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18660
I help translate it into English and post here.

This report is related to the width of the windows of application gnome-
session-properties.

The 1st screenshot was taken from ubuntu 10.10 with English language as default.
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7261/1010e1.png
This is almost the same as that one sent by Jack Wasey in Comment 1 for bug
350329
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/350329/comments/1

The 2nd screenshot was taken from ubuntu 10.10 with Traditional Chinese
language as default.
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/8560/1010c1.png
Because the length of the Chinese sentence becomes so short that, Not like
under English environment, it becomes so narrow in width and one hardly take a
clear look of the items inside the windows without dragging the windows wider.
Sometimes it takes too much time to aim at the edge of the windows and drag it
to a comfortable size with the pointer of the mouse. It becomes very
unconvenient to all users with Traditional Chinese as default local language.

It should be wonderful if you are so kind to keep the windows opened
with a reasonable size when first initiated.

[Bug 663670] [NEW] empathy doesn't connect to msn - blocked connection

2010-10-19 Thread Jonatan Schroeder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I'm trying to find a bug that is related to this one, but none of the
options I found matches. When opening Empathy, and trying to connect to
my MSN accounts (I have two), Empathy keeps trying to connect, but
nothing happens. There is no error message (so this is not the classic
"Network error" bug that is solved by killing telepathy-butterfly), but
the connection is not finalized. Checking the debug window, these are
the last messages for butterfly:

I'm running on an i386 (Netbook) platform connecting to an Exchange 2003
server.

When upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, exchange mail accounts no longer work in
Evolution. When clicking the account, the folder structure won't expand and the
account does not send or receive e-mail (although) it does appear in the
send/receive dialog box.
