2010-11-05 Thread Joel Stephens
I'm having same issues as tomaskCZ and everyone else on two different
AMD64 machines. I've completely removed evolution, named accounts
differently, started in offline mode, any work around I can gleam from
this thread, but evolution is still unusable due to the issues everyone
has mentioned. This is pretty embarrassing. When you are in a corporate
environment, email and calendaring are the kind of fundamental functions
you expect out of your PC.

[Bug 671533] [NEW] Please merge rsyslog 4.6.4-1 (main) from debian unstable (main)

2010-11-05 Thread Lorenzo De Liso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rsyslog

rsyslog (4.6.4-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
 - bugfix: programname filter in ! configuration can not be reset.
   Thanks to Kiss Gabor for the patch. Closes: #540807
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.1. No further changes.

 -- Michael Biebl   Thu, 05 Aug 2010 18:35:37 +0200

rsyslog (4.6.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
   * debian/patches/02-set-correct-default-for-buffered-writing.patch
 - Removed, merged upstream.
   * Switch to source format 3.0 (quilt).
 - Add debian/source/format.
 - Drop Build-Depends on quilt.
 - Remove debian/README.source.
 - Remove /usr/share/quilt/quilt.make include from debian/rules.
   * Switch to dh v7.
 - Bump Build-Depends on debhelper to (>= 7.0.50).
 - Bump Build-Depends on autotools-dev to (>= 20100122.1) for the
   autotools_dev dh addon.
 - Convert debian/rules to dh.
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.0. Use Breaks instead of Conflicts as
 recommended by the new policy.

 -- Michael Biebl   Wed, 07 Jul 2010 19:07:03 +0200

rsyslog (4.6.2-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
   * debian/patches/02-set-correct-default-for-buffered-writing.patch
 - The default for $OMFileFlushOnTXEnd was wrong ("off"). Patch pulled from
   upstream Git.

 -- Michael Biebl   Wed, 07 Apr 2010 16:42:56 +0200

rsyslog (4.6.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
 - Fix error in rsyslog.conf(5) man page. The configuration variable
   $InputUDPServerRun does not exist, it should be $UDPServerRun instead.
   Thanks to Alexander Gerasiov for spotting this. Closes: #571202
   * debian/rsyslog-doc.install
 - Install png image files.
   * debian/patches/doc_typo_fix.patch

 - Add lintian override for init.d-script-missing-dependency-on-remote_fs
   false positive. See also the corresponding lintian bug: #571280.
   * debian/rules
 - Add call to dh_lintian.
   * debian/rsyslog.init
 - GNU/kFreeBSD does not allow to create pipes in /dev. So for xconsole
   create the pipe as /var/run/xconsole and a /dev/xconsole symlink.
   Closes: #537170

 -- Michael Biebl   Fri, 05 Mar 2010 01:07:53 +0100

rsyslog (4.4.2-2) unstable; urgency=low

   * debian/control
 - Demote mysql-server and postgresql from Recommends to Suggests. The
   server packages are not strictly necessary for dbconfig-common's
   autoconfiguration to work and one might want to use a remote server.
 - Add Recommends: mysql-client for rsyslog-mysql.
 - Add Recommends: postgresql-client for rsyslog-pgsql.
   * debian/patches/doc_typo_fix.patch
 - Fix a typo in the html documentation and man page regarding the syslog.h
   header file and the syslog(3) man page. Closes: #559334

   * debian/watch
 - Only check for stable upstream releases.

 - Removed, merged upstream.

 -- Michael Biebl   Wed, 02 Sep 2009 17:19:05 +0200

rsyslog (4.4.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * New upstream release.
   * Removed patches
 - debian/patches/manpage_pidfile.patch (merged upstream)
 - debian/patches/close-stdout-stderr.patch (merged upstream)
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.3. No further changes.
   * Disable testbench as it requires java.
   * debian/patches/testbench-java.patch

debian/patches/debian-changes wasn't removed, it was just reordered.
Unfortunately 3.0 (quilt) packages aren't the easiest to compare with
debdiff; a diff of the unpacked sources will show that there are no changes
aside from the initramfs hook.

Thats good question Maximilian
My Aspire One have ssd disk with 8GB space signed sda and also two slots for
SD cards. I have in first slot
SD 30GB and second slot 8GB cards.Unfortunately these cards is not bootable.But
resolution is.
At the install Lucid Linx I have partitions splitted. Boot in sda1 100MB (this

swap in sda 1,5GiB and partition signed xp ntfs 4GiB also in sda. Partition
home is in SD card signed mmcblk1p1 with the manner 13GiB, partition usr
mmcblk1p2 8,5GiB partition var mmcblk1p3 2,5GiB. The residual space in the
mmcblk card is partition helper. All partitions Ext3 exept for xp ntfs. Second
slot is for 8GB sd card signed the ethernity mmcblk2 designed for backup.
And why partition boot? When boot is not be splited from /root sector,
computer not boot for me.
Today I resolved my problem with boot itsy-bitsy. Heureka. I am buy CD live
Lucid Linx . With the risk awareness go at gParted and first diminish sector
/root about 300MiB , second magnify sector boot from 100MiB to 400MiB
Update the computer resolved my problem after.. God bless the gParted

[Bug 632293] Re: ubuntu "certified" hardware misleading, and key contributor to lack of progress on bug #1

2010-11-05 Thread bitinerant
I bought the V13 specifically BECAUSE of Ubuntu's certification with
10.04 and 10.10. However, the laptop is unusable because of this
touchpad issue. Reading through Fuggum's research (see also http://www
.mail-archive.com/dell-recov...@lists.launchpad.net/msg00030.html) and
doing a lot of my own, I have just about decided to give up and try to
get a refund from Dell. I am very disappointed in both Dell and Ubuntu.

[Bug 671516] [NEW] Can't start X with a Cirrus Logic GD 5465 [Laguna] (rev 03)

2010-11-05 Thread Kemel Zaidan aka Legendario
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Just can't start X server on this old hardware:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Cirrus Logic GD 5465 [Laguna] (rev
03)

Since it's so old, there should be no problem with that. X seems to have
a driver for that, but the log says something about a segfault.

Because of this bug, ubuntu Lucid could only be installed by alternate
cd media.

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-05 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
Basically my program looks like this:

static volatile sig_atomic_t child_terminated=0;

void sigchld_handler(int sig) {
int copy_errno=errno;
debug("Received SIGCHLD");
child_terminated=1;
signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler);
errno=copy_errno;
}

int main() {
signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler);
for(;;) {
/* do some heavy weight stuff */
/* check for child_terminated and perform waitpid */
}

Maybe the debug-call is the reason. It is sending the String to the local
syslog-daemon, using sockets and therefore a bunch of system calls. When I
consider strace, I see the arrival of SIGCHLD and the futex call directly
behind it.
When the futex call is performed, the 3rd argument is a "2". I verified it
using PTRACE_PEEKDATA on the 1st argument (which is the address of the futex
value). It really is a "2". Do you know what this "2" exactly means? Does it
mean one process blocked a ressource and another one is now suspended? What
happens if I write a "1" to the futex address?

Thanks a lot for answers ;-)

[Bug 667024] Re: Keyboard hot keys dont work and crash the program (fn+f9, fn+f10, fn+f11, fn+12)

2010-11-05 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 671514] [NEW] xscreensaver-getimage and xscreensaver-getimage-file don't respect "chooseRandomImages: False" in .xscreensaver

2010-11-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

I would like to use xscreensaver's outstanding implementation of "the
Ken Burns effect" of panning and zooming.

I have set "imageDirectory" to a desired directory in ~/.xscreensaver,
and I have set chooseRandomImages to False, as I want to view my
slideshow in the correct sequence.

However, the perl script xscreensaver-getimage-file always chooses a
random image, ignoring the value of chooseRandomImages.

I'm working on a patch.

[Bug 671097] Re: update-grub needs to ignore linux-ec2 kernels

2010-11-05 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: grub2

  I'm investigating backporting support for guest managed kernels into
  10.04 guest UEC images.

  Doing so would allow 10.04 guest images that were running on EC2 and
  10.10 UEC hosts to run 'apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot' and boot into
  their new kernel. Currently, the 10.04 guests cannot manage their own
  kernel under either UEC or EC2.

  The solution in place for 10.10 is to use grub-pc to load the kernel on
  UEC and legacy-grub-ec2 to load the kernel on EC2.

  That same solution will almost work for 10.04. The one point of failure
  is that 10.04 images have 2 kernels in them (linux-ec2 and linux-
  virtual). Currently the linux-ec2 kernel is 2.6.32.309.10 and linux-
  virtual is 2.6.32.25.27. That would mean that when update-grub runs, it
  will choose the linux-ec2 kernel as the newest, and, on reboot, the
  guest would reboot into that -ec2 kernel on UEC.

  To avoid that, we need to have update-grub explicitly ignore the -ec2
  kernel.

  I had a discussion on this solution with cjwatson at
  http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/11/03/%23ubuntu-devel.html .

  The key point of that discussion is that it will *never* be useful for
  the -ec2 kernel to be loaded by grub-pc. the only possible case that
  would occur is the future development of a grub2 based xen pv-grub.

  One other bit of information, is that the upgrade path from lucid to
  maverick is preserved. The maverick based grub-pc do not exclude the
  linux-ec2, but do not need to. Maverick does not include a linux-ec2
  kernel (well, it is in the archive, but not updated). Thus, when a do-
  release-upgrade from lucid->maverick would occur, there will be a
  -virtual kernel installed that will appear to maverick's grub-pc to be
  newest. It would be selected, and all future upgrades would have
  -virtual kernels that were newer than -ec2 kernel.

+
+ = SRU Information =
+ * impact of the bug: In the maverick cycle, work was done to make instances
launched from UEC images capable of managing their own kernel using
grub-legacy-ec2 on EC2 and grub2-pc on UEC. Without those changes, lucid
images are not able to manage their kernel. What that means is that an
instance running in UEC cannot have a security upgrade applied to a kernel by a
simple 'apt-get upgrade && reboot'.
+ In the lucid images, we have 2 flavors insalled (linux-ec2 and
linux-virtual). The linux-ec2 version is higher than the linux-virtual
version. As such, update-grub from grub-pc would select the the ec2 kernel for
booting on UEC, and the instance would fail to reboot.
+ * how the bug has been addressed: In maverick, the linux-ec2 kernel was
removed entirely. There is no '-ec2' kernel to be ignored. In lucid, the fix
is to explicitly ignore kernels named '*-ec2'.
+ * minimal patch: The changes are available in my branch at [1], the diff can
be seen from tip of that branch to revision 69 (current lucid-updates) [2].
+ * instructions on how to reproduce the bug:
+   * Run grub-install /dev/sda1 and update-grub in a uec image.
+ * verify that the linux-ec2 kernel is the first kernel listed in
/boot/grub/grub.cfg
+ * regression potential: The possibility for regression is very low. There is
no current situation where grub-pc would ever be intended to load an Ubuntu
'linux-ec2' kernel.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 671504] Re: compiz crashes - illegal instruction

[Bug 671507] [NEW] Evolution lost Ubuntu One contacts, there still in the Couchdb database though

2010-11-05 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution lost my Ubuntu One contacts, meaning they don't show up and an
error box pops up. I checked the couchdb database and there still
there, there just not showing up in Evolution. I don't do anything
unusual with Evolution. This has happened before. It happens when I
start Evolution.

I have used this fix many times:

The above link usually does not work right away, I have to do it several times
in a row before it works.

[Bug 671103] Re: backport grub-legacy-ec2 from maverick to lucid

2010-11-05 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: cloud-init

  I'm investigating backporting support for guest managed kernels into
  10.04 guest UEC images.

  Doing so would allow 10.04 guest images that were running on EC2 and
  10.10 UEC hosts to run 'apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot' and boot into
  their new kernel. Currently, the 10.04 guests cannot manage their own
  kernel under either UEC or EC2.

  The solution in place for 10.10 is to use grub-pc to load the kernel on
  UEC and legacy-grub-ec2 to load the kernel on EC2.

  In order to do this, we will need to pull the legacy-grub-ec2 package (a
  binary package built from cloud-init's source) to lucid.

  I've done that backport and have a ppa build available at
  https://launchpad.net/~smoser/+archive/lucid-kernel-upgrades .

+ * impact of the bug: This is not so much a bug as a missing feature from
10.04. With current 10.04 based EC2 images, an instance was not able to
perform a kernel upgrade with 'apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot'. This is
because the linux kernel is loaded by the hypervisor rather than a bootloader
whos configuration is controlled by the instance. Near the end of the 10.04
cycle, Amazon announced "pv-grub" support. This allowed instances to manage
their own kernel by managing /boot/grub/menu.lst
+ * how the bug has been addressed: In maverick, the grub-legacy-ec2 package
was added under the cloud-init source package. This package manages
/boot/grub/menu.lst much the same as grub-0.97 would (it is primariliy a source
copy).
+ * minimal patch: The changes are available in my branch at [1], the diff can
be seen from tip of that branch to revision 16 (current lucid-updates) [2].
+ * instructions on how to reproduce the bug:
+ Two bugs that are fixed by suggested changes:
+ 1. system will not boot given a pv-grub kernel
+ * launch a lucid instance with pv-grub kernel
+   ec2-run-instances --instance-type t1.micro --kernel aki-407d9529
ami-b2b443db
+ 2. system will not reboot into new kernel
+ * launch a lucid instance
+   ec2-run-instances --instance-type t1.micro ami-42887c2b
+ * install a newer kernel
+   sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo reboot
+ * reconnect, and verify old kernel is used.
+ * regression potential: The possibility for regression is centered around
the fact that this change will cause
+ * new ubuntu images to load with a ramdisk
+ * kernel to boot with console=hvc0 parameter (used currently in maverick)
+ There is *no* potential for regression on running systems, only on systems
where a user chooses to install grub-legacy-ec2 *and* modifies their instance
to use pv-grub.

There are package install/remove for emacsen a2ps but no package. I
moved /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/a2ps and ../remove/a2ps

My guess is the emacsen a2ps package was automatically removed on an

[Bug 671504] [NEW] compiz crashes - illegal instruction

2010-11-05 Thread Alexander Heuer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Using: Ubuntu 10.10 maverick

Compiz crashes on startup. If used with indirect rendering it crashes
the whole x-server.

compiz --debug yields:

compiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file
/home/evilphish/.compiz/plugins/libcore.so : No such file or directory
compiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /usr/lib/compiz/libcore.so : No
such file or directory

compiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file
/home/evilphish/.compiz/plugins/libplace.so : No such file or directory
compiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file
/home/evilphish/.compiz/plugins/libdecoration.so : No such file or directory
Illegal instruction

So far the following solutions have been tried:
- purge and reinstall every package that has "compiz" in it's name
- install compiz packages from lucid
- move compiz userconfig out of the way
- create a new, blank user to be sure that no config whatsoever interferes

If you need more info, shout :)

[Bug 659411] Re: Entering a tilda ~ does not take you to the home directory

2010-11-05 Thread Jake Tolbert
Out of curiosity (and mostly for my education--I don't really know how
these things work), how does the process work for this to get fixed up?

I see on the upstream bug report that someone's attached a patch. How
does that patch make its way into the Ubuntu update process (and what
sort of time frame do these things normally run on)?

[Bug 662885] Re: PDF Compositing error

2010-11-05 Thread cowboy79
Thanks for the quick response madbiologist, I think this is more of a
paper cut than a serious bug but as I use pdf a lot I tend to see it
alot. One thing I noticed is that the pdf I sent has an open office
generated gradient in other pdf's I have which contain png images with
gradients you get a perfect output. Don't know if that helps but just
thought I would mention it.

Re: [Bug 671281] [NEW] [compiz++] Gtk-window-decorator from git does not update title and font colour for active/inactive state

2010-11-05 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Just found a method of reproducing this bug:-
1. Using the wall plugin, keep switching between two workspaces until the
animation gets stuck and jumps to the next workspace (another bug?)
2. Then change a tab in Firefox or Pidgin and note that the window title does
not change. Resizing the window solves the issue.

Have fixed the problem with firmware upgrades at both drives and
checking their cabling. This is a bit ugly, users with this error should
check their drives.

[Bug 585853] Re: Not possible to use xdm/wdm, only can use gdm (Lucid, Maverick)

2010-11-05 Thread Richard Griswold
The workaround in /etc/init.d/slim does work for me in Maverick, but I
am running on an Intel i915 (8086:2A42). I also added "i915.modeset=1"
to my boot options due to bug #566379. Comment 32 for that bug mentions
adding "nomodeset" to boot options so X would work with ATI and Radeon.
